Nortons Basin Clean and Sparkling A hard working group of local residents filled 10 recycle bags, 24 rubbish bags and hauled in two lounges, half a car, and pile of dumped general waste. See page 8

NSW Fire Brigade Warragamba The Brigade has recently been upgraded with Secondary Response approval and is now able to assist in motor vehicle accidents and elevated rescues, or respond if the Penrith Brigade is unavailable. Half of the staff have already completed the rigorous 8 weeks training with the rest due to take the training. This improved status was a direct result of the local traffic community meeting last year when the previous inadequate situation was highlighted.

Please Note: The Warragamba NSW Fire Brigade (under Emergency Services Information in the Warragamba and Surrounds Community Business and Tourism Directory) should be 4774 1222. Please note this number down in your copy for your convenience. Seniors (those aged 65 years and older) are more likely to be injured or killed in a house fire than any other group. The NSWFB sees it as vital to try to help seniors to reduce the potential for tragic situations in the future. See page 6

Easter in the Parish 2010

Anglican Parish of Mulgoa Good Friday 2nd April 10am at St Paul’s Warragamba (with Creche and K-6 program) 7pm at St Thomas’ Mulgoa (with band) Easter Sunday 4th April 8:30am at St Thomas’ Mulgoa 10:30am at St Paul’s Warragamba (with Creche and K-6 program) 6:45pm at St Thomas’ Mulgoa (with band)

What makes ‘Good Friday’ ‘Good’? We Australians value our public holidays. We celebrate what we share as a nation with our families and friends. But what about Good Friday? What is so ‘good’ about ‘Good Friday’? At first glance, Good Friday is not good at all. It marks a day that brought out the very worst in human beings. Leading up to that day there was jealousy, plotting and conspiracy. The day we are remembering was character-

ised by mob rule, a terrible miscarriage of justice, and a violent and judicial murder. Good Friday marks the execution of an innocent man named Jesus of Nazareth, called the Christ, almost 2000 years ago. Surely none of this makes Good Friday ‘good’! We celebrate Good Friday because of what God did for us on that day. While humans were engaged in an evil act, God was himself bringing unimaginable good from that evil. The ‘good’ that God brought was this: ‘Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God’ (from the Bible 1 Peter

chapter 3 verse 18). It was the first Good Friday that changed our world. For God himself, in the person of his Son Jesus, died the death we deserved to die. We are the unrighteous. But Jesus is the Righteous One. Jesus died to rescue unrighteous people who put their trust in him. So Good Friday is good because an innocent man, Jesus, died for guilty people, you and me. Why don’t you also put your trust in the Jesus who makes Good Friday ‘good’? Rev Matt Olliffe 4774 0422

The majority of residential fires begin in the kitchen and are often the result of cooking being left unattended on the stove. Other common causes of fire include electrical appliance failure, overloading powerpoints, and appliances not being switched off at the power point. NSWFB Commissioner Greg Mullins said there were simple steps that seniors, and everyone else, could take to improve safety measures in the home. * Install and maintain photoelectric smoke alarms, which can be hard-wired and interconnected so that when one sounds they all sound. * If you’re unable to maintain your smoke alarms due to infirmity, then contact your local fire station. Firefighters assist the elderly to check that smoke alarms are working and change batteries. The SABRE (Smoke Alarm Battery Replacement for the Elderly) program is designed to support the elderly, residing in their own homes and without family, relatives or friends who are able to assist, to live independently and remain valuable assets in the community.

* Develop and practice a home escape plan regularly and if you live alone, involve your neighbours. * Install deadlocks that can be opened from the inside without keys. Where the door needs a key to operate, leave keys in locks or nearby so that you can find them easily in an emergency. * If you have difficulty hearing, then consider installing special smoke alarms which have a flashing strobe light and vibrating pad that can be placed under the pillow while you sleep and will activate when the smoke alarm sounds. * In an emergency, dial Triple Zero (000). Never assume that someone else has done so.

Warragamba Preschool 60 in May! Warragamba Preschool has been nominated by the Federal Government’s Preschool Growth Project as having the potential to grow additional preschool places to children the year prior to school. The Preschool was recently awarded with a Government grant enabling plans to be drawn to build another room to the front of the preschool, increasing the preschool by a further 20 places for children aged 3 to 5 years each day. The preschool community is very excited about this new project and believes that it is a fitting way to celebrate 60 successful years in operation. The preschool would like to thank IGA Silverdale and Luddenham for choosing us as their 2009 recipient of almost $1000 from their Community Chest fund. The funds will be used to build an outdoor gazebo and new bench seating for the children’s outdoor playground. If you are interested in placing your child on the waiting list please contact the Preschool office on 4774 1249.

Badgerys Creek Airport Designation must be removed The Federal Member for Fowler, Julia Irwin MP, has again told the federal parliament that the Badgerys Creek airport designation must be lifted as soon as possible. In her speech on the 11th February Mrs IRWIN (Fowler) (4:35 PM) said ‘The national aviation white paper released at the end of last year spells the death knell for Badgerys Creek airport. It is no longer an option. After 11 years of Howard government procrastination, there is finally action on this important issue. The Commonwealth and the state of New South Wales will develop a joint proposal for the future use of the Badgerys Creek site’ “I must put on the record and remind the taskforce that many local residents continue to remain affected by the airport designation, both in and around Badgerys Creek.” “I have received many letters, emails and calls from affected residents. They have been living with the airport plan and its designation for more than two decades,” Julia Irwin said.“Those that fall within the airport designation zone are the ones bearing the greatest burden. Many are unable to develop their properties. Those that can are burdened by conditions imposed due to the Australian noise exposure forecasts. Julia Irwin said the lifting of the airport designation must be an absolute priority for the taskforce which will examine the future use of the airport site. ‘These are real people and real stories. Their needs are real and their urgency is real. The task force must assist by making the lifting of the airport designation an absolute priority in their deliberations so that those affected may finally get on with their lives’

Norton’s Basin Clean Up! Clean-Up Australia Day, 7th March 2010, 8am – Norton’s Basin. It’s a cloudy still autumn morning and fifteen volunteers (all strangers) wind down the steep and heavily eroded road to beautiful Norton’s Basin.

We are armed with bags, gloves, one first aid kit, cold sausages, and heaps of enthusiasm. Two volunteers, Kelly and Kyle from Silverdale, stay in the car park to pick up the piles of rubbish left by drivers. Down in the Basin, there are lots of glass beer bottles smashed by people after finishing a beer. Countless ciga-

rette butts, cans, take-away food bags, lolly wrappers and plastic soft drink bottles litter the Basin and the team fills ten bags. The rain holds off but we all work up a sweat (except the boys who keep jumping in for a swim!!!). It is hard work pulling the filled bags up the steep slope to the car park so we all take turns (and lots of breaks!!). After a mini-sausage sizzle, some lamingtons and cold drinks we all re-group in the car park, completely exhausted. Our Clean-Up Australia Day is over. We have filled 10 recycle bags, 24 rubbish bags and hauled in two lounges, half a car, and pile of dumped general waste. It is an excellent result and the team smiles for a photo. It is on again next year and a group of strangers is now a team committed to cleaning up Norton’s in 2011. Please come along!! A big big thank you to Christine Maude (from the Warragamba & Silverdale Word), Kelly & Kyle Callaghan (from Silverdale), Blake Turner & friends, Matthew Adamson & Nathan Glynn (representing St Doms School,

Kingswood), Wendy & Howard Thompson, Luke Pallister, Beau Pallister, Melissa Jenkins, Joshua & David Griffin, Joshua Bilson, June Bourke, Kara Nascivera, and Sandra Onus. Hey guys thank you and hope to see you in 2011. Sandra Onus.

Warragamba Police Senior Constable Perwaiz is the new local policeman and he wants to work in partnership with the local community to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour. As part of this partnership, it is important that victims and witnesses of crimes support police by providing statements for their investigations. Senior Constable Perwaiz said, “The community are the ‘eyes and ears’ of police. In order to assist me, and my colleagues at St Marys LAC, I encourage locals to contact police to report crime and anti-social behaviour. With your assistance, I will take action against those persons found to be committing offences. Although you may not have witnessed a crime, if you have any information it may be a small piece of the jigsaw puzzle that completes the bigger picture”. Phone 4774 1105 (which diverts to St Mary’s police if not answered.

Happy 97th Birthday Mavis The Mulgoa Seniors meet on a Monday morning in the Mulgoa hall to enjoy friendship and dfferent activities and outings. Their most senior member is Mavis Thomas from Wallacia who has just celebrated her 97th birthday and is pictured here with the group and her presentation bouquet. Mavis is still very active and enjoyed a dance around the hall with Tad Stepniewski to the music of Frank on the keyboard.

1

Frank Wadsworth is a music therapist and a very popular entertainer for the Mulgoa seniors as well as other groups. He is a very accomplished pianist and organ player who continues March to delight 2010 people even in retirement.
