Our Wayne, Penrith Citizen of the Year! Penrith’s 2016 Citizen of the Year, Wayne Willmington, is a champion of local business, charity and community pursuits in which he devotes time to his own business and fundraising for charity. He also has served his local Rural Fire Service for more than 20 years. Wayne was one of nine residents awarded Australia Day honours at a formal dinner held at the Civic Centre, last month. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said the recipients of the awards continue to uphold the prestigious nature for which they are awarded. “Each year Council awards residents for their selflessness and dedication to the community,” Cr McKeown said. “These inspirational people were nominated by friends, family and peers as outstanding citizens. They richly deserve recognition for their work in our community.” Wayne has shown expertise in many areas including - business, charity and community pursuits as well as being a foundation member of the Warragamba / Silverdale Chamber of Commerce, along with many other endeavours. As a passionate local business owner Wayne has been involved in many progressive initiatives around Penrith and continues his dedication to volunteering with more than 20 years of service to the RFS. Wayne was instrumental in writing ‘Luddenham, The Story’ and along with wife Ann organised the ‘Music For Life Ball’ raising money for Dr Teo’s Cure Brain Cancer Foundation. Welcome to our first edition for 2016! I know the Christmas and New Year period raced by in a blur for many, and here we are, already facing what February has in store. The New Year period is always my favourite. A great time to refocus and set goals. The perfect opportunity to take on board any challenges from years gone by, learn and grow from them. It’s these challenges that have made us stronger and more determined to reach our newest goals. We are in the first weeks back to school for many students across our community, and who can forget that very first introduction to BIG school? We return with all of our regular columns that provide a great wealth of information across a broad cross-section of topics. Local Schoolgirl and Warradale Little Athletics competitor, Madeline Hodder has recently been selected to represent New South Wales in the Australian Junior Athletics Championships to be held in Perth, Western Australia in March. In order for Madeline to compete in the event, including travel and accommodation the cost is around $5000. As a community Warragamba and Silverdale are very generous and help out their own. Maddie needs the help of family, friends and the wider community to raise these funds for this experience to happen. Maddie has always dreamed of representing her country at the highest level, so lets help her on the path to her dream. Growing up in Silverdale and attending Warragamba Public School, Maddie has always had an interest in sport, and in particular, athletics. She joined Warradale Little Athletics at 4 years old and has progressed in her chosen events. Maddie has a keen interest in throwing events, in particular Discus, Javelin and Shot Put, but the event that Maddie loves most of all is Hammer Throw. Maddie now trains and competes with Nepean Athletics group and also does extra training with Team Brekaz in the Hammer throw event. On Friday the 13th November last year, the Daily Telegraph printed a list of the 6 most haunted places in Sydney which included St Thomas churchyard in Mulgoa. There has always been a fascination with historic graveyards being haunted and St Thomas church has had to deal with thrill seeking intruders for years. Since that article there have been more people coming to see if the urban myth is true. As the gates are kept locked except for Sunday, they cannot drive around to see the engine mysteriously stall when the headlights are turned off! However they park outside and the bravest venture in to see if they come across the ghosts of twin brothers who were apparently burnt to death after their friends abandoned them there! Of course none of that is true and St Thomas church is a beautiful place of worship with a service every Sunday at 8:30am.

The graveyard is much better known for the classical historical sandstone monuments, mainly of the Cox family. Edward Cox of Fernhill died in 1863 aged 63 and his brother George Cox of Winbourne died in 1868 aged 74. The earliest graves date from early 1838, and include that of Nathaniel Norton, the original owner of Fairlight and Allaster Maclean Surveyor General of New South Wales, who died in 1862 aged 37 at Fernhill. The headstone, in front of the Cox graves was brought to St. Thomas’ from the old Castlereagh cemetery for greater protection against vandalism. There are many sad stories behind the inscriptions, such as 23 year old Daniel Coveny who was accidentally shot on July 24th 1905. A study of the Monumental Inscriptions and Burial register was carried out in 1997 for the Nepean Historical Society. The grave yard is no longer available for burials unless a site has been purchased in the past. However there are niches in the columbarium wall still available for the internment of ashes. This is close to the church, surrounded by trees and native bushland and is a peaceful resting place for your remains. Further information is available from the church warden on 0407 366 033. Fiona Scott MP Wins The Northern Road Upgrade Extension Through to the Great Western Highway

As part of The Western Sydney Local Roads Package, Round 2, upgrades to The Northern Road will now be extended through to the Great Western Highway. Last month’s announcement will see The Northern Road upgraded from the Great Western Highway, all the way through to Narellan. This will compliment upgrades to the Northern Road (north) which have been brought forward 18 months, meaning construction on Stage Three is due to begin early next year. That will see major upgrades of intersections at the M4, Glenmore Parkway and Bradley Street. Recently the Federal Government announced extending the project from the M4 through to Jamison Road. Extending the upgrade again through to the Great Western Highway will be
a major boost to this important carriageway. Work will focus on upgrading intersections along the stretch and will cost $6.7 million. Federal Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott MP said, “This is great news for local residents and motorists. Upgrading The Northern Road is an issue I’ve championed from the beginning. “Congestion on this road is a topic often talked about by local residents. I am proud to be part of a Government who has listened and is acting, with approving upgrades through to the M4 and now all the way to the Great Western Highway. “I thank the Minister for Major Projects Paul Fletcher and NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay for working together on this vital piece of infrastructure for Western Sydney”. As part of the upgrade, there will be increased: • Right turn capacity on Great Western Highway, westbound at The Northern Road; • Right turn capacity on The Northern Road, north bound at Great Western Highway • Median adjustment and lane widening on the Northern Road southbound at Great Western Highway • Widening Derby Street approaches to The Northern Road to enable dedicated right turn lanes • A new roundabout at the intersection of Bringelly Road and Caddens Road • Minor land acquisition • Removal of parking and/or peak hour parking restrictions on The Northern Road and on Derby Street approaches The upgrade is a key part of the Federal Government’s commitment to delivering better infrastructure for Western Sydney.

2016 will be the biggest year in the history of Luddenham, with official work starting on the Airport and the Northern Road. It is also a special year in the history with the 130th Anniversaries of the Uniting Church and the Progress Hall. The Luddenham Show Society is also celebrating its 125 years as a Society and are planning an extra special Show on the 20th & 21st of February. Luddenham is in the middle of the recently announced Innovation Corridor that will stretch from Campbelltown to Hawkesbury, and include Badgery’s Creek Airport Precinct and the Western Sydney Employment Area. It will
link the NSW Government’s designated North-West and South-West growth centres, this is another positive for the development of the area. The Western Sydney Airport Draft Environmental Impact Statement is now closed for comment. The Final Statement is expected to be released in May, just before construction starts. On the 5th of January, locals were concerned the work had started on the Airport with large construction equipment (see photo), working 1.5 Km south of the Shell service station on Northern Rd. I was advised “that the Commonwealth is undertaking geotechnical investigations to inform planning for the Western Sydney Airport. Geotechnical investigations are a standard part of planning activities for large construction projects�. The exhibition period for the Sydney Science Park Planning Proposal has now closed. Penrith Council Officers are considering the submissions received. If the Council resolves to proceed with the proposal, the Department of Planning and Environment will need to finalise the amended LEP. A little bit of the country will come to town on the 20th and 21st of February with the Annual Luddenham Show being held for the 112th time at the Luddenham Showground. This year, the main arena will play host to not one but two jet cars. Joining the Daihatsu will be the never before seen jet powered van, making its debut. Brave country men will compete in the bull riding. Steer rides, poddy calf rides and cow tagging will also take place in the rough riding program. In other entertainment, there will be the dog high jump, where you can bring along your own dog to compete or watch the sheep dog trials. With a program that is bursting at the seams, you’ll find stage entertainment including singers, reptile displays, sheep shearing, dancers and novelty acts. Also open for the public to enter are events that include whip cracking, ice cream eating contests and a bush poet’s breakfast hosted by Australian champion Carol Heuchan. ‘Luddenham’s Got Talent’ talent quest will offer $600 in prize money for local acts, whilst country rock band ‘The Strangers’ will also feature. Mower Mania will pit the best of the best grass cutters in their speed machines against each other. Art, photography, cooking and farm produce displays will grace the historic pavilion. Animals of all shapes and sizes will come together to be judged. There will even be an animal nursery that the kids will love. Market stalls will also be a great attraction, not to mention, the fireworks display which will be provided by none other than, Fotis International. He was talking about parenting in general, and parenting a child with a disability more specifically. One thing, that Professor Tonge said, really rang a bell with me. He said ‘Parenting is an active process’. How true is that? Nothing in life is achieved by sitting down, and this is especially true of parenting. Children don’t grow themselves up, and parenting gets harder as your children get older. You only get out of it what you put into it, and children do better in every way when their parents are actively involved in their lives. When you think of everything your children need to learn about themselves and the world, the mind boggles. And parents are their children’s first teacher. It is not up to school to teach children everything. Getting along with others, managing emotions, practical skills, literacy, self-care, etc., doesn’t start when children go to preschool or school. Learning starts from birth. And children don’t always learn stuff by being specifically instructed. They learn it in relationship with us, their parents. They learn it in the daily interactions – all day, every day. It’s not something that you turn on once per week on Sunday. As a parent you are always ‘on’. What an awesome responsibility this work of raising children is. But there is a fine balance isn’t there? Between being ‘too much’ and ‘too little’. How do we achieve ‘just enough’? There is a strategy in the Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) parenting course called “incidental teaching”. It’s such a gentle and nurturing strategy of getting alongside your child. Finding out what she knows, and scaffolding her to learn more and develop competence and self-esteem, without being overprotective, overbearing, or dismissive. When we achieve ‘just enough’, there is an exchange of energy that is both nurturing and rewarding, for both parent and child. And it actually requires less mental and physical effort from us. Preheat oven to 180C. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Scatter walnuts over the tray and drizzle with honey. Bake for 5-7 minutes or until walnuts caramelize. Remove from oven and set aside to cool. Combine the pomegranate molasses, lemon juice, mustard and 2 tbs oil in a screw-top jar and shake until well combined. Season with salt and pepper. Heat the remaining oil in a large frying pan over high heat. Add the haloumi; cook, turning, for 2 minutes or until golden brown and heated through. Remove from heat. Combine rocket and spinach in a large bowl. Drizzle with dressing and gently toss to combine. Arrange on serving plates. Top with haloumi and walnuts and sprinkle with pomegranate seeds. Serve immediately.

Financial Top Tips for 2016 The kids are back at school, you’re back at work and 2016 is in full swing. Why not make this year the year you get your debt under control and start working towards another financial goal like buying a home or an investment property or saving for retirement or any number of things. Here are my top 3 tips for a financially successful 2016. 1. Budget. Budgeting doesn’t have to be confusing. Sit down with a cuppa, pen and paper and 3 months statements for your credit cards and bank accounts. Read through line by line writing what each expense/debit was for. Once you’ve done this group these expenses together on your paper. Groceries, Petrol, Fast Food, Utilities, Entertainment, etc, with a total for each. Add in any annual expenses that may not have appeared on your statements. Now you have a very accurate record of how you spend your money. Find areas where you can cut back and write a new list with a budgeted amount for the next 3 months in each category. Then in 3 months’ time, repeat the process and see how you did. 2. Debt Consolidation. Unless you are having serious trouble making repayments, consolidating credit card debt into your home loan is a TERRIBLE idea. All it does is make your home loan harder to pay off. A better solution is to do a “balance transfer” to another credit card offering 0% interest and pay off the debt before the interest free period ends. If you don’t have the spare income to do this, then apply for a personal loan with a 5 or 7 year term. Whichever way you choose, make sure you cut up your old credit cards. 3. Review your Home Loan. This should be an annual activity as the market changes so frequently and is very simple to do. Simply send us your last home loan statement and we will let you know if there’s a better deal in the market for you. 4. Make 2016 be the year that you got on top of your finances.

Don’t Let Mulgoa Neighbour Disputes Simmer Karen Wins! in Summer Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP, last month outlined how Community Justice Centres (CJCs) are ready to take the heat out of neighbourhood conflict throughout the community this summer, as part of the New South Wales Government's free mediation service. Tanya Davies encouraged neighbours to seek help from CJCs before feuds get out of hand. “Poor relations with your neighbours can be stressful and in most cases mediation is a better option than expensive legal action or trading insults over the fence,” Tanya Davies said. During summer, CJCs often see an increase in neighbour noise disputes. “While many neighbours enjoy spending time together over the holiday period, others find themselves at their wits’ end as they endure raucous parties and other disturbances, such as noisy air conditioners, pool pumps and children” said Tanya Davies. CJCs provide a safe and neutral environment for people in dispute to put forward their point of view and listen to the concerns of others. The professional mediators don’t make judgments but work equally with all parties and achieve an agreement in almost 80 per cent of cases. The service is available in Mulgoa and across the State and CJCs will arrange a session at a location convenient for all involved. Slipped Discs – Not Always a Life Sentence! Disc problems are very common. Up to 81% of people will have disc bulging, 33% disc herniation (slipped disc) with no back-pain symptoms (Stadnik 1998). Lumbar-disc herniation is most common in people aged 30–50 years, men twice as likely as women. Many people (1-3%) suffer from disc related pain (Jordon 2009), often for years.
The strength of the connective tissue that makes up the disc is vital. Age and nutrition are the key. Older people generally have weaker connective tissues, but nutrition & eating right is crucial. Bone broth, greens, nutrient dense unprocessed and fermented foods provide nutrients to keep your weight optimal and your bones & discs strong at any age. Weight bearing exercise provides hormonal signals to build strong discs if diet is adequate. Temporary Pools an Accident Waiting to Happen Discs are fibrocartilaginous joints between vertebrae. They take the weight on the spinal column, cushion vertebra during compression and act like a ligament holding vertebrae together. A spinal disc is a little like an old style donut. It has a fibrous tough outer layer (annulus fibrosis) that holds in an the “cushioning� softer gel-like inner core (nucleus pulposus). Three main disc issues exist. All can cause pain due to inflammation & nerve impingement. 1. Disc protrusion: disc remains structurally sound but bulges out at the sides. 2. Disc extrusion: the tough outer layer of the disc tears & part of the softer inner core protrudes through. 3. Disc sequestration: under extreme compression, all of the softer inner core material is squeezed out of the disc into the surrounding tissue. Chronic disc compression due to excess body weight and tight core muscles, or both, can lead to weakening & damage to discs. Extreme acute pressure during a lift can also damage discs. Definitely avoid strengthening the core or lifting if you have disc associated pain.

Wollondilly Shire Council is now seeking expressions of interest from potential stall holders who would like to be part of illuminARTe Wollondilly on Saturday, 7 May 2016. Attracting more than 20,000 people, IlluminARTe Wollondilly is the largest event on Wollondilly’s calendar. The festival encourages visitors, locals, friends and families to stroll through the picturesque town of Picton taking in the enchanted ambience as an amazing range of local artworks are projected onto landmark buildings to illuminate the historic town. Activities kick off at midday with market stalls selling locally made arts and craft, designer fashion and accessories, packaged gourmet foods, and other unusual, innovative and unique items. The take-away food vendors focus on traditional street food freshly prepared on site, particularly those with international influence of “sizzle, aroma and theatre�. Live entertainment will add to the atmosphere from midday and continues through the night with performances from Local bands, soloists, groups and buskers; as well as a special guest performance from Liam Maihi from Channel 9’s hit show “The Voice�. The Picton Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a Family Fun Day in the Picton RSL Park which will consist of a community BBQ, jumping castle and other children’s attractions. As night falls, the ANZAC memorial gum trees will be glowing with coloured lights with the activities continuing on after sunset. During the evening, children and adults proudly march in the Lantern Parade with paper lanterns they have made. The finale is a fireworks spectacular over the town capping off a night of colour, light and creativity. 4 Reasons Why Kids Should Play with Dolls Dolls are fabulous toys for both girls and boys, especially those going through grief. Dolls teach children things about life, emotions, love, loss and problem solving within their environment. They develop cognitive and motor skills, language skills, caring and nurturing skills, and teach children how to navigate through strong and challenging emotions. Playing with dolls teaches children about their own world and the world they’re growing into. 1. Develops cognitive and motor skills through: Dressing and undressing dolly, Brushing hair, Feeding dolly with a spoon, Bathing dolly, Potty training, Pretend play, Manipulating dolly to stand, sit and move. 2. Develops language skills: Playing with dolls helps in pretend play by making opportunities to learn, use and practice speech and language skills, which expands their vocabulary. Children learn this by: Naming and recognising body parts, Teaching items of clothing e.g. shirt, blanket, singlet e.t.c., Answering What? Where? Why? Questions. For example “What is dolly doing?” “Where is dolly?” “Why is dolly crying?”, Dolly can interact with other toys to learn “Where?” dolly is in relation to the other toys e.g. Dolly is next to the car, Learning verbs (action words) like “Dolly looks hungry, does she want something to eat?” 3. Developing caring and nurturing skills by: Taking responsibility for their doll, Copying parenting behaviour (It’s important for parents to take notice of how children play because it gives you huge clues into how they (the child) sees you as a parent and guide), Learn respect and responsibility 4. Developing emotional intelligence: Children often feel overlooked by adults who are dealing with grief. They’re overwhelmed by their emotions and feelings. Playing with dolls helps children bring emotions down to a manageable size. Dolls offer support by: Listening to the child’s problems, Being their as a companion, Acting out what the adults are doing, Searching for answers. I believe that both girls and boys should play with dolls to help them learn empathy, compassion, fine motor skills, social skills and emotional intelligence.
With the help of the ‘Lost & Found Pets Warradale Mulgoa Valley’ Facebook page, set up by local Christine Maude and flyers posted in the area, Kristy Debattista from Mulgoa and Karen Bedford from Silverdale recently assisted in the safe return of lost dogs on New Year’s Eve. The volunteers were called to areas including Mulgoa, Luddenham, Wallacia and Silverdale to scan microchipped dogs that had escaped their yards due to nearby fireworks. “We were kept extremely busy on New Year’s Eve scanning and housing scared dogs. I’m pleased to say all dogs were reunited with their grateful owners” said Karen. The Mulgoa Valley Gazette would like to thank these local heroes for their valuable service to the community.

Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital 4736 2027 $2110 Guide Dog Donation from the Santa Photos with Pets Santa Claus visited Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2015 and photos were taken with your pets. We all enjoyed watching your pets get dressed up with Santa hats and scarves and sitting on Santa’s knee for a photo. With a lot of laughs and giggles, we took many cute Santa photos. Thank you for all of the donations for the photos. With your great support, we raised $2110 for The Guide Dogs NSW/ACT!! Wow!! We all had lots of fun and The Guide Dogs get a great donation. Thanks again for participating. Too much fun!!
Leo The Guide Dog Puppy Camille is a puppy raiser for the Guide Dogs. She has been looking after Leo since October 2015 and he graduated from Puppy Preschool at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in November 2015. The Guide Dogs have organized numerous outings for the puppies, and Leo attended the Meet The Pups Day at Glossodia Guide Dogs Centre in November, a training session at Penrith Christian School in November, Christmas in the park at Surry Hills in December and a walk through the
streets of Penrith in December. It is great to see Leo catch up with his litter mates and be exposed to different environments. Leo is growing up so fast, he is through the chewing phase of life (well nearly!!), he is finally toilet trained and he is a cheeky little puppy. Camille’s other dog Pony is finally playing with Leo. Camille lost 2 of her other dogs (Callie and Bella) this year and when the new puppy arrived Pony was sooo not interested. Pony was never nasty to Leo, he just ignored him totally. Every day without fail, Leo would go up to Pony at least 100 times and say 'Hi my name is Leo, do you want to play?' and Pony would turn his head away and ignore Leo. It took Pony 7 weeks to start playing with Leo, and when they started to play together it was as if they were friends forever. Full on wrestling matches around the house and yard, sharing the beds, and licking each other's faces. Too cute! Pony obviously needed time to get over the loss of his 2 friends and accept the new pack member. Leo will be returned to The Guide Dogs when is about 1 year of age, where he will continue his training and hopefully succeed as a Guide Dog. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team.
