Anderson on Track to Success Mulgoa’s Josh Anderson, 18, has been mad about cars since he was old enough to play with them, and has been hooked on the V8 Supercars since he watched his first race at the age of 3. He has been racing online simulators since he was around 12 years old and credits his years of practice to his ability to pick up racing in the real world quite quickly, finishing in the top ten in his first ever race on the streets of Townsville.

The young up-and-coming racer currently drives the #36 RDA Brakes Chevrolet Camaro in the 2018 Aussie Racing Car Series, a support category to the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship. Having only started racing in this series midway through last year, Josh has already made an impressive start by achieving his first podium at Winton, Victoria last May. He is currently 6th in the National Championship out of 30 plus entries over the 4 rounds of that series and would really love to end the 2018 series with a podium finish too.

Josh attributes his success so far to the encouragement, support and mentoring by his stepfather, Darren Chamberlin, who raced in the Aussie Racing Cars Series for over 10 years and won the National Championship in 2014. He admits that racing is actually a very difficult sport that requires strong arms, legs and core muscles as well as a 100% concentration and mental toughness.

This month, Josh will race at Eastern Creek Raceway on September 21st to 23rd and will go on to finish off the year at the Gold Coast (19th to 21st October), with both races televised on Fox Sports 506.

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington Well, it is all happening in Luddenham. August was a big month first up and we had the sod-turning ceremony at Sydney Science Park in Luddenham. It was attended by the Hon. Tanya Davies MP (Member for Mulgoa); The Hon. Stuart Ayres MP (Minister for Western Sydney, Minister for West Connex, Minister for Sport); John Vassallo, CEO Celestino (the owners); The Hon. Paul Fletcher (Minister for Urban Infrastructure & Cities) and Penrith Mayor John Thain. It marked the start of development at the 280-hectare Luddenham site, which upon completion is expected to deliver more than 12,000 smart jobs, educate 10,000 students and provide over 3,000 homes right here in Luddenham. They are getting stuck into the earthworks already.

Western Sydney Airport also reached another major milestone during August, with companies now invited to bid for a major contract to undertake the mammoth task of clearing and levelling the site. At almost double the size of Sydney Airport, considerable work is required to transform the undulating 1780-hectare site at Luddenham and Badgerys Creek into an operational airport by 2026. The difference in height between the lowest and highest point of the site is the equivalent of a 12-storey building—requiring the levelling of 22 million cubic metres of soil to make the airport site flat. The contract is expected to be awarded in mid-2019 with major earthworks expected to commence in the second half of 2019. Early earthworks are scheduled to commence before the end of this year.

At the recent annual meeting of the Progress Association, the following were elected: Wayne Willmington - President, John Riordon - Snr Vice President, John Willmington - Vice President, Patrick Darley Jones - Secretary and Glen Marsden - Treasurer. Also, the Show Society held their AGM with the following elected: Wayne Willmington - President, Garry Rogers - Snr Vice President, Rocky Roots and Lenka Nikesitch as Vice Presidents and Harley Woods Secretary - Treasurer.

Due to the current drought conditions, the NSW Rural Fire Service are bringing the official fire season forward one month to start from September 1. Luddenham Rural Fire Brigade are looking for new members. If you have some spare time and would like to get involved in this community organisation, give Bob a call on 4773 4142. They meet on the second Monday of the month.

August saw another landmark vanish with Dolly Cuthell’s house on the Northern Road demolished. Jack and Dolly Cuthell had moved into their new family home there in 1945.

The hardships that Australian farmers are currently facing with the drought is something very close to Di Watson’s heart. Di, a Mulgoa resident, is involved in the Buy a Bale program which was started by Queensland farmers Charles and Tracy Adler in 2013 to aid farmers in providing much needed hay drives for animals.

“I became involved with Buy a Bale back in September 2013, when I was raising some money to buy hay, copra and salt for a large stationstay “West Leichhardt Station” at Mount Isa, Di explained to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette.

“It was in severe drought and the first time I saw firsthand the devastation drought causes. Farmers do their absolute best to keep their stock in great condition. Many an orphan calf or lamb are hand raised at the high cost of milk formula and they become a permanent pet at the property. Since then, when I knew or heard of farmers needing a “hand up”, not a “hand out” I would contact Charles at Buy a Bale to see what we could do to help out” she said.

Already many businesses locally have registered to fundraise on their behalf and this includes requesting to have a donation tin on the counter at their place of work.

Local Event Raises $6,000 The recently held Mayor’s Charity Scavenger Hunt and Charity Dinner was a great event raising money for two local causes.

The total amount raised was $6,000, with $5,000 going to the Wollondilly Prostate Cancer Support Group and $1,000 to the Warragamba Anzac Community Fund for a Commemorative Statue.

On the day, 28 Scavenger Hunt Teams solved clues and completed challenges around the Shire, ending up at Warragamba Town Hall. The winning teams were 1st – Williams F1, 2nd – Team Gouldies and 3rd – Team M&M. The Charity Dinner hosted 12 tables of people. Dinner was provided by The Chef and I Catering and entertainment by The Swingin’ Old Fellas.

They had some amazing raffle prizes thanks to their sponsors.

It was also great to see the enthusiasm with which participants took part in this event!

Looking Back And Looking Forward Sunday 12th August was a significant occasion for the people who regularly meet at St Paul’s Anglican Church in Warragamba. After more than 50 years of meeting in this building, it was time to say “goodbye” to a building that has served us well. In fact, a building first built to support the local community involved in the construction of Warragamba Dam! We were thankful that the Mayor of Wollondilly Council, Judy Hannan was able to join our congregation as well as a number of previous ministers and congregation members.

It was encouraging to have a full room with more than 70 attending this final service where I was able to speak on the significance of Jesus and encouraging people to get to know him and the difference he can make to our lives.

But it was also a time to look forward. Having sold the building, which is planned to now be used as a child care centre, our Church is in a position to construct a new building on Silverdale Road in Silverdale.

This is good news as it means not only will we be able to continue to serve and connect with the local community, but we will also be ready to connect with the people moving into Silverdale.

Until the construction is completed we will go on meeting at St Thomas’ Mulgoa so it would be great if you are able to come and meet us and hear firsthand the good news message of Jesus.  Images Supplied

Warragamba Hobby Hut Market & Garage Sale While it was sad to say goodbye, it was also encouraging to be able to look back and remember with thankfulness to God the many people who were transformed and inspired by the good news message of Jesus and who because of this, they worked hard to serve the community of Warragamba. Looking back, it was good to hear many encouraging stories of the people who throughout the years had got alongside those in need as well as providing practical support and care.

The Warragamba Hobby Hut Market and Garage Sale is back.

The date for the next market is perfectly timed for the start of Spring - from 9:00am Sunday 9th September at the Hobby Hut, 13 Third Street, Warragamba. Pastor’s Corner Someone recently asked me why I go to Church each week?

Why do I think it is important that other people should go there? These are good questions, yes I am thankful that I am employed by a Church as a Pastor, but is that my reason for going to Church? No it is not, because since I was nineteen, I have regularly attended Church, nothing to do with my employment. I go to Church to worship God but I could do this at home, so is that the complete answer as to why I go?

The Bible tells us, “Let us not give up the habit of meeting together, as some are doing. Instead let us encourage one another.” Habits are things that we do frequently not occasionally, like many of us I have habits that are good and some that are not so good. But if I want to build a relationship with people, build community then it needs to be frequent; it just cannot be when I feel like it. I am called to encourage those I meet with, this happens through building relationships

that are open, authentic, non-judgmental, loving, genuinely caring for the needs of others.

So too, my relationship with God, do I only spend time with God, when I have a problem, a need that I cannot fix myself?

That is not a relationship, because God wants to be close to each of us. The “habit of meeting together” is about spending time with God, listening for His voice and acknowledging who God is.

On the last Sunday of each month, we have what we call “Café Church”, we share together over a cup of tea or coffee, with some food, and discuss how the Bible relates to our everyday lives. We bring different perspectives based on our backgrounds, our circumstances and personalities. It is a habit that many of us have enjoyed and found stimulating.

My prayer is that each of us will develop the habit of talking to God and meeting together to encourage one another.

A Monumental Milestone: First SOD Turned at Sydney Science Park The transformation into a hub for research, technology and innovation received a major boost recently as the first sod was turned at the Sydney Science Park site in Luddenham.

Penrith Mayor John Thain said the landmark event will be remembered as a milestone in our growth and development.

“The Sydney Science Park is exactly the kind of development we need to build a strong local economy with a range of innovative and accessible jobs and high-quality education opportunities” said Cr Thain.

“Penrith is rapidly emerging as the innovation juggernaut of Western Sydney and the development of Sydney Science Park further cements our place as a leading centre for research, education, jobs and opportunity.

The Science Park will attract the world’s leading scientific professionals and organisations to Western Sydney and be a catalyst for more local jobs and investment in Penrith.

Potential linkages between the Science Park and work undertaken within The Quarter, Penrith’s award-winning health and education precinct, are also clear opportunities and an exciting prospect for researchers, educators and students from across the region” Cr Thain said.

Once complete, the Science Park, being developed by Celestino, will create 12,000 knowledge-based jobs and be home to more than 10,000 residents. It will also cater to more

than 10,000 students, including those from Sydney’s first dedicated STEM school.

Luddenham provides the perfect location for the Science Park, where it will benefit from significant government investment in the region’s infrastructure; vital transport connections including the North South Rail Link and major road upgrades; close proximity to the new Western Sydney Airport; and the vibrant Penrith City Centre.

Cr Thain said Council recognised the value of Sydney Science Park to the region from the beginning; a development with a vision that mirrors the aspirations of the community.

“It exemplifies our New West thinking, our attitude that in Penrith – anything is possible. We are a place of limitless opportunities, a thriving city with the space, the people and the vision to make things happen” said Cr Thain.

“We’re excited to be working with partners to realise our goal of delivering up to 55,000 local jobs by 2031, and the Science Park is an example of this in action. More local jobs and more opportunities for world-class education right on our doorstep.

“I’d like to commend Celestino’s vision for the Science Park and the State and Federal government for supporting this game changing development.

The rest of the time we can be kind. Sometimes we have to set boundaries and limits for our children to keep them safe and well. It’s an important part of parenting, and an important part of a child’s development.

Children feel safer when we put reasonable limits on them, and they expect it of us.

Some of the angriest children I have worked with are those whose behaviour is an attempt to get Mum or Dad involved in managing their behaviour. His “out-of-control” behaviour is his way of trying to get Mum or Dad to take more control. And what does “out-of-control” look like? A child hitting you, being angry with you, screaming at you, telling you that she hates you, running away from you. Anger is fear expressed in a loud manner.

When a child perceives a parent as ‘weak’, unable to take charge, the child feels unsafe, so she ramps up her behaviour to try to force the parent to take responsibility for setting the limits.

However, some parents have a really difficult time doing this.

The parent may have grown up with a parent who was harsh, punitive, and mean, and does not want to be like that person, so she flounders when it comes to setting boundaries and limits and guiding and educating her child. When the parent flounders, the child flounders.

The child has a limited experience of life, so out of frustration and anger he resorts to yelling and hitting you to get you to take notice. If negative attention is all the child gets, then she will seek more of it through her behaviour.

‘Punishment’ does imply being mean. I ask parents to focus on ‘discipline’. The word ‘discipline’ originated from the Latin word ‘disciplina’ and it meant instruction and knowledge, and to learn.

And what do you want your child to learn? Self-control. When children learn self-control they learn balance, calm, persistence, and confidence. Is that the kind of kid you want to send out into the world?

Setting boundaries and limits for your child can be done in a calm and methodical manner. It does require you to be consistent, immediate, and decisive. It also requires you to role model selfcontrol. You calmly and quickly deal with the behaviour, so you can enjoy more of the good stuff (relationship, connection, fun) with your child.

Around this time of year, it is common for the controversial discussion about the validity and purpose of National Assessment Program - Literacy And Numeracy (NAPLAN) to resurface amongst parents, teachers and schools. With the release of individual results; schools, teachers and students are under intense scrutiny and often the intended purpose and aim of NAPLAN data is lost in a sea of comparison and fingerpointing blame.

According to the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), “NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. It is important to remember that NAPLAN is not about passing or failing, but about assessing learning progress.

At the classroom level it is one of several important tools used by teachers to measure student progress”.

The testing process was somewhat different this year with the introduction of online testing, which has been riddled with criticism from teachers and educational experts questioning the validity of comparable data with those who sat the pen and paper test. ACARA released a statement prior to the release of the data this year reassuring the public that their “data analysts and measurement advisory experts have advised the data is valid and comparable”.

NAPLAN is designed to be a tool that assists schools to improve the learning of all young Australian students, however, it is important to acknowledge that it is one snapshot of time. It cannot measure classroom engagement, creativity or confidence. It does not consider exam performance, anxiety or other external factors influencing students on test day.

That said, it is still a valuable tool for schools to identify needs and analyse results to personalise learning and track growth.

NAPLAN is not the ‘be all and end all’ of education, it is simply one tool that can be used in conjunction with many other tools to improve the education of all Australian students.

Mango Meringue Bites

Black Cat White Cat Café Opens in Mulgoa

Ingredients 2 small ripe mangoes, peeled, chopped 2 tablespoons caster sugar, plus 3/4 cup extra 2 tablespoons lime juice 2 egg yolks 75g butter, chopped 24 mini tart shells 3 egg whites Preparation 1. Blend or process mango, sugar and lime juice until smooth.

Transfer to a medium saucepan. Whisk in egg yolks. Place over medium-low heat. Stir constantly for 6 to 8 minutes or until mixture thickens and coats the back of a spoon.

Remove from heat. Add butter, one piece at a time, whisking until combined. Cool for 5 minutes. Place tart shells on a large baking tray. Divide curd among tart shells.

Refrigerate for 3 hours.

2. Preheat grill to high. Using an electric mixer, whisk egg whites until soft peaks form. Gradually add extra sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, until firm peaks form. Place meringue in a piping bag fitted with a 1cm fluted nozzle. Pipe meringue onto pies. Place under grill for 2 minutes or until tops are lightly browned. Serve.

Spring Clean Your Body At long last, Spring arrives. We often think of this season as a time to throw open the windows and let the fresh air in while doing a big tidy up around the house.

What a great idea!

But, don’t stop there. It’s also the perfect time to take stock of yourself by refreshing your mind and body as well.

Here are a few ideas for trading a winter sedentary lifestyle for a fresh season of healthy living: Use lawn maintenance as exercise - gardening, weeding, mowing will get you outside and moving around AND spruce the garden at the same time.

Create an outdoor entertaining space - get some comfy seating and eat more meals outside, hang out with the family or friends, take your laptop outdoors to work or better yet, just relax and read a book.

Try a new outdoor activity - this is a great time to try something new like yoga, hiking, swimming, biking, golf or kayaking.

Practise mindfulness - learn to meditate, keep a gratitude journal or write affirmations. It’s important to declutter the mind, heart and soul.

Change your diet - drink more water and add a springy touch to meals.

Warradale Little Athletics Club Life Member Barry Garment passed away on Monday 13th August 2018.

In 1989, Barry was a founding member and the driving force to get our club up and running. Along with his wife Anne, Barry was a long serving committee member, Zone Coordinator and Association official.

Barry’s list of service and accomplishments goes back many years. He was a member of the Little Athletics NSW Board from 1978 - 1981.

Barry was awarded Life Membership of Little Athletics NSW in 1988. He was also awarded Life Membership of Bankstown Sports Athletics Club after 17 years of service with the club when his children, Carol and John were members.

In 2004, both Barry and Anne were awarded Life Membership of Warradale Little Athletics Club. In 2009, Barry was inducted into the Australian Little Athletics Roll of Excellence in the Volunteers category for his service to athletics.

Barry, you were a gentleman and a friend to all and will be sadly missed by the whole athletics community.

Warradale Little Athletics are a Junior Athletics Club for children of all abilities aged from 3 to 16 years of age.

Warradale Little A’s is a family oriented, not for profit sporting club, focussing on fun and fitness, where many friendships are made.

Events that the local club participate in include sprints, middle and long distance, shot put and discus, long, triple and high jump, walks, javelin and turbo jav.

Competition is on Friday nights from September to March at Warragamba Sporting Oval from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.

Their Under 6’s to Under 17’s competition program is run over two weeks, whilst their Tots (3 and 4-year olds) enjoy a modified program that involves play-training activities. Both programs are inclusive to athletes of all abilities.

Registration for the coming season is done online via LANSW website. A collection day will be held from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Friday 7th September at Warragamba Sporting Oval, with the season starting at 6:00pm on Friday 14th September. New athletes are welcome to trial for two weeks at a cost of $10.00. Proof of age is required e.g. birth certificate, hospital blue book, passport or statutory declaration.

Gardeners looking for inspiration or just wanting to experience the beauty of spring in the Upper Blue Mountains, will again be flocking to the annual Leura Gardens Festival in September and October.

This year’s festival, the 54th, will take place over 2 long weekends: Saturday, 29 September to Monday, 1 October Friday, 5 October to Sunday, 7 October The cost of an all-gardens ticket is $25 and $8 per person per individual garden.

This year there will be ten beautiful cold-climate gardens on show to captivate our visitors and provide inspiration to all. There will be masses of tulips, bluebells, daffodils, peonies, rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias as well as magnificent flowering cherries, forest pansies, crab apples and dogwoods to delight the eye.

Other attractions include the Music in the Gardens performances held from 1pm in the gorgeous grounds of the Waldorf Leura Gardens Resort on each of the festival days and including the Sydney Mandolin Orchestra and the Heathens Choir of Blackheath. Entry will be by way of a gold coin donation.

Visitors can also take home a permanent memento of the festival from the Plant Sales Centre which will this year feature plants from several new participating nurseries, providing a much wider range of both native and exotic species. The centre will also have on sale metal garden art and an interesting range of garden tools.

Also of interest is the Art Show presented by the Society of Mountain Artists featuring work created in the gardens during the Festival.

Both the Art Show and the Plant Sales Centre will be open for 9 days from Saturday, 29 September to Sunday, 7 October.

All proceeds go to the Blue Mountains District ANZAC Memorial Hospital and other health related organisations.

Come and Try Bowls in Wallacia Last month, the ladies at Wallacia Bowling Club held their first tournament in over a decade. It was a three bowls mixed triples tournament that was a lot of fun.

With overwhelming sponsorship from local businesses and Club members, 20 teams had a great day playing for $2,100 in prize money.

The overall winners were Ted Boyan, Skinny Hogg and Tom Flood (Wallacia). “The Wallacia Women only have a very small membership base. We are trying to get more local women interested in bowls. It is very difficult we know, as most women work these days, as do many of our members. It used to be a game only for retirees, but not any more� said Sue Ashurst, Treasurer of Wallacia Womens Bowling Club.

NSAID – Can They Increase Your Risk of Having a Heart Attack or Stroke?

From my previous article we know that taking NSAIDs provides no improvement in pain scores or function long term.

But, let’s take a look at another reason why you may not want to take NSAIDs longer term.

Vioxx, withdrawn from sale in Australia in 2005, provides cautionary tale. Vioxx was on the market for 4 years in Australia, doctors writing nearly 10-million prescriptions in that time. The figures for Australia are unknown, but in the US, Vioxx caused up to 140000 heart attacks, and up to 40,000 deaths.

But what of other NSAIDs? A 2013 study in the Lancet showed that all NSAIDs increased cardiovascular risk, including mortality, myocardial infarction, and stroke. This includes newer drugs such as celecoxib (Celebrex). Older drugs diclofenac (Voltaren), ibuprofen (Advil and Motrin) actually doubled cardiovascular risks. Chris Cannon MD, recently stated in the medical publication Practice Update, ‘anyone who thinks ibuprofen is “safe,� beware’.

Harvard medical school summarises the FDA warnings for NSAIDs as follows: • Heart attack and stroke risks increase even with shortterm use • Risk may increase within a few weeks of starting NSAIDs • Risk increases: o when NSAIDs are taken for longer periods o with increasing NSAID dose • Even people without heart disease may be at risk • Risk is greatest for people who already have heart disease • Previous studies have suggested naproxen may be safer;

more recent evidence questions the certainty of this Note: these warnings don’t apply to Aspirin, which may be beneficial for cardiovascular disease.

It’s often my older patients who tend to rely on NSAIDs. But they are also much more likely to have chronic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, obesity or diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, & sometimes a strong family history of heart disease. Such disorders already increase their risk developing heart attack or stroke. Taking NSAIDs for pain simply adds more risk. Harvard Med School provided the following advice: • If you have heart disease avoid NSAIDS if at all possible.

Even so‌ • Take the lowest effective dose • Limit the time you take NSAIDs • Never take more than one type of NSAID at a time • Use acetaminophen (relieves pain without increased heart attack or stroke risk) • If nothing else works, try taking week-long “holidaysâ€? from your NSAIDs, take acetaminophen instead • If you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, or sudden weakness or difficulty speaking while taking an NSAID, seek medical help immediately.

Much of the pain for which NSAIDs are used comes from poor lifestyle choices over a long time. Diet is a key factor here, exercise also. If you’re suffering chronic pain why not call us at the clinic

Building Designs And Construction HOME DESIGNS To plan for a new home, you must consider what is the purpose and function of your new home. In many cases, homes are getting sold after 7-9 years with these families moving on to either larger homes once the children are older and more space is required, or in a growing number of cases may want to “down-size” into a smaller home because the children have left and the home has become too large for the owners who want an easier lifestyle.

Firstly, you need to consider how many people will be occupying the new home. This will affect how many bedrooms you will need and bathroom facilities. Are elderly parents going to be living in part of the new home - who may require a separate “Granny Flat” on site? The new home owner may need to consider if they will entertain more often once they have their own home. Would this mean a larger Entertainment area with an Alfresco and/or BBQ area? A Home Theatre or Gym are rooms that new home owners may like to consider.

If the owner has his or her own business, a Home Office or Study would be a great asset. So you can see that new home owners may want a lot of space and rooms to extend their family. Don’t forget about that 2-3 car garage.
