Damfest 2018 – Always Something New! This year marks the 13th year of Damfest, with the great community event being held on Sunday the 21st of October at the Warragamba Recreation Reserve in Warragamba.

Damfest is a free event and is organised and presented by a sub-committee of the Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre (WSNC). It began in Warragamba town centre as a way for all local community and sporting groups to fundraise on a grand scale. The event outgrew the town centre and was moved to the Recreation Reserve to cater to its continued expansion.

In the last few years, Damfest has seen its attendance numbers increase along with the variety of things to see and do. The event now includes live entertainment, car show, bike show, swap meet, Emergency Services displays, market stalls and amusement rides.

There will be fun for the kids throughout the day with reptile shows, working dog displays, sheep shearing and KindiFarm, along with face painting and live characters to entertain everyone.

Jake Rattle’n’Roll will be live on stage along with the Rockabilly dancers. There will also be an appearance from Short Notice.

The community stage will include performances from Warragamba Public School, a local dance group, line dancing displays and more.

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington All my life, I have heard talk about an Airport in Luddenham with comments like it will never happen, they can’t afford it and that the land will be sold for housing to name a few. Well, on Monday the 24th of September the talked about airport became a reality with the initial earthworks commencing on the Western Sydney Airport, marking the start of the airport’s construction. I was pleased to be invited to represent the Local Luddenham Community for the Ground Breaking Ceremony with our Prime Minster, Scott Morrison (by the way, 90% of stage 1 of the Airport is in Luddenham).

The initial earthworks phase of the project involves moving around 1.8 million m3 of earth to prepare the site for major earthworks and runway construction. It also involves preparing to move Badgerys Creek Road to the east of the Airport boundary to allow construction. Major earthworks are scheduled to start in 2019 and will involve moving 22 million m3 of soil on the site.

The earthworks will be carried out in accordance with the conditions of the Airport Plan.

Accordingly, a Construction Plan, Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMPs) and a Community and Stakeholder Engagement Plan have been developed by WSA Co and approved by the Department. A 24-hour Western Sydney Airport construction enquiry line has also been established and can be contacted on 1800 951 171.

A Local Land Owners Group have organised a meeting to discuss local development opportunities. In particular, details/ suggestions/submissions about the recently announced Aerotropolis Phase 1 plan for an Agriculture Agribusiness precinct on the western and north western side of Western Sydney Airport. This group will discuss the creation of an “Aerotropolis Agribusiness Action Group” to make sure the community not only keeps up to speed with what is happening, but also to be able to participate in the design of the process. This Group will be for Land Owners in Agriculture Agribusiness Precinct. The meeting will be held at 6:30pm in the Luddenham Progress Hall on Monday 8th October.

The RMS announced that they are looking at putting traffic lights on the corner of the new Northern Road and Adams Road, instead of the promised bridge. They were calling for submissions that needed to be in before the 28th of September.

Luddenham Show Society along with Cars Under the Stars are holding a car show to raise money for Aussie Farmers. Proceeds from the night will go to Rural Aids “Buy a Bale”. This event is open to all types of cars, utes, trucks, bikes and boats with an entry fee of $10. Complete with Food Trucks, Kids Activities, Live Entertainment, Raffles and much more. Entry fee is $2 person with kids free.

Warragamba Says Thank You Norm

The community of Warragamba bid farewell to Norm Tallon last month, as the dedicated and respected Paramedic retired after 37 years of service with NSW Ambulance, which included the last 24 years at Warragamba Station.

Norm started his career on the 14th September 1981 at 8:00am. At 7:00am on the 14th September 2018, just one hour short of 37 years, he signed off for the final time. His first posting was to Auburn for 3 years, followed by Blacktown for 10 years, then finally arriving at Warragamba in 1994. This is where, except for a few months of special assignment during the swine flu, he served ever since.

“In those days Warragamba Station was one of very few in the state that was a single officer response, which meant we spent most of our time in the township as we could not be used for general work. When responding to a casualty call, if the patient was stable, we would transport to hospital on our own. If the patient was not stable, we would treat on scene until assistance arrived, normally from Penrith” explained Norm.

“In the 1990s and early 2000s, we felt a part of the local community very much, with locals coming to the station for medical advice, dressing changes and minor medical assistance.

In those days, I rode my pushbike to work and many times on a hot day, friendly locals driving by would stop and give me a lift something that was much appreciated. My wife, Melody, painted the murals including sprigs of wattle to signify the Wattle Queen festivals that the local community used as a major fundraiser to purchase the ambulance station” he continued.

For about the last 15 years, Norm and his partner had been double-crewed at Warragamba, which meant they didn’t have to wait around for back up if they had an unstable patient. However, because they were a normal crew, they were often needed to help prop up other areas that were busy, which often kept them out of the area for many hours at a time. This had made it hard to feel as connected to the community as they once were.

“While there have been times of joy and tragedy in the past 37 years, I have appreciated the trust and respect shown to us by most of the community. St Thomas Anglican Church Celebrates 180 Years St Thomas Anglican Church in Mulgoa reached an important milestone last month, celebrating its 180th Birthday, after it was originally consecrated on the 13th of September in 1838.

To celebrate the occasion, the church gathered on Sunday the 16th of September and held a very traditional service, more akin to 180 years ago than today. Around 50 people attended, many regulars but a few who had heard about the celebration from friends. People were encouraged (and largely succeeded) in ‘wearing their Sunday best’ as would have been the way back in the day. While this mostly meant suits and ties for men, dresses and hats for ladies; a few people dressed in period clothing.

For the service itself, they used the 1662 Book of Common prayer liturgy. This meant that there were lots of “thee’s and thou’s” as well as many old English words like enduedst, sitteth and shew.

Dr Adrian Sheen played traditional hymns on the pipe organ (‘And Can it Be’, ‘There is a Redeemer’ and ‘O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing’) and following the service they held a morning tea. This included a cake, cut by John Mahoney, as the minister and his 18-month-old son.

“St Thomas is a beautiful building in a beautiful location. I often just pause before heading into the building on a Sunday to listen to the birds and take in the sight. Despite the main road just through the tress you feel like you’re in the middle of the bush” said John Mahoney, Assistant Minister at St Thomas Anglican Church.

“But far more than the sights, the people of St Thomas are the real joy. As a new minister, fresh from Bible college, every member of the church welcomed me and my wife with open arms. What Do You Want?

In December 2017 the ‘Huffington Post’ newspaper printed the results of a survey asking people if in one word they could say what they wanted more of in life.

How would you answer that question? How did the people surveyed answer that question?

Here are the top 10 things they said.

The number one missing element was happiness. Number two was money. Following that was freedom, then peace, joy, balance, fulfilment, confidence, stability then passion.

What you might find very interesting is that it is the testimony of Christian people throughout the ages that these are things that you can find by following Jesus – apart from money, which Jesus is not against but clearly states will not bring happiness!

Not only is this the experience of millions and millions of Christian people, but there are dozens of places in the Bible where we see Jesus making promises that those who trust and follow him will know these things.

For example, concerning peace; “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

Concerning freedom; “If you hold to my teaching, you really are my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Concerning happiness; “Blessed are those who are poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

Or concerning joy, “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you...I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.”

So much more could be said, but here’s the bottom line; the things in life that we want which are truly valuable will only be found in Jesus!

This truth fills the people who call Mulgoa Anglican Church home, with joy and confidence.

Pastor’s Corner A few years ago I had the opportunity to help Liya, a young Ethiopian High School girl; who had left behind the comfort and familiarity of much loved family and friends, in order to gain an education, whilst taking care of an Uncle who was recovering from an accident. With no English language skills, and a world that was completely foreign to her, Liya sought to navigate through years 11 & 12 at High School.

Liya had been brought up in a family, that sought to follow God, she would regularly pray and fast, hoping that somehow, someone would come and assist her to complete her Higher School Certificate. At the same time, in a Church I was pastoring, my leaders and I were praying that God would open an opportunity for me to volunteer in some capacity, in the local High School. The High School asked for volunteers to help girls with literacy, and this provided me with an opportunity to

meet and to assist Liya. Over those two years, for an hour or so twice a week, I would help Liya with her essays in two subjects (English and Society and Culture).

Liya shared with me about her earlier life, her struggles to find a sense of belonging in this foreign land called Australia; God had answered both Liya’s and my prayers. The Bible, speaks of the practicalities of helping others: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.”

(Matthew 25:35-36). Perhaps I would add, I need help with language and my studies, and you sent someone to help me.

My prayer is that each of us will know that God hears our prayers, and the we will find ways to help others.

Wollondilly Women in Business Network

Wollondilly Women in Business Network (WWIBN) was founded upon a vision that Chairperson and Founder Michelle Legg had about eight years before it was born.

Michelle was building the functions business up in a local club from scratch and often thought how great it would be if there was a network for women in leadership positions and local business to unite, support and encourage each other. On her own time and without remuneration, she became a member of the local Chamber of Commerce and Wollondilly Tourism and attended regular monthly meetings. She represented the club to build the bridge between Picton and Bargo. Her aim was to create a great function business, as their venue had the unique selling point of a modern venue that could seat 400, where nowhere else in the Wollondilly had that capacity.

“It was then I realised just how important networking was to build trusted relationships and hoped someone would do it.

Eleven years later in July 2015, WWIBN was founded and started as a Facebook page” explained Michelle.

WWIBN saw that there was a need in the area for a network

such as theirs. The main word they heard was isolation. The Shire is predominantly mum and dad businesses (Micro Businesses) and lots of women work in shop fronts or home-based businesses and really don’t know where they can spend locally. Their initial committee of four local business woman was formed. WWIBN then became an incorporation so that they could meet for monthly meetings.

Since then, their Committee has changed. Once a month, we have morning coffee catch-ups and move to different venues. We have evening networking events usually based in Picton at Vaby’s, training, workshops, our Annual Event and Wwow Book Club. We are pleased to say to date we have just under 190 financial local business members”.

“We have had some great guest speakers from our own members through to Tracey Spicer, Betty Klimenko, Gretel Kileen and Paula Duncan” said Michelle.

Whenever I want a belly laugh I look at one of his videos, he is so cute. He is very fond of ‘pep talks’. One of his videos is ’20 things we should say more often’.

I am not funny like Kid President, and I’m not fond of corndogs, but here are my top 20 things parents should do if they want to be happier parents (in no particular order): 1. Get rid of ‘good boy’, ‘good girl’, and ‘good job’. Use descriptive praise instead.

2. Get rid of ‘naughty’ and ‘bad’. Tell your child what s/he has done wrong, and what to do instead.

3. Avoid ‘don’t’, ‘stop’, ‘no’, ‘quit’, and ‘not’. Tell your child what s/ he has done wrong, and what to do instead.

4. Give your child a minimum of 12 hugs per day, whether s/he deserves it or not (that’s called unconditional love).

5. Avoid questions if your child has no option. “Would you like to hold my hand in the car park?” “No thanks Mum/Dad”.

6. Be a good role model. ‘Do as I say not as I do’ doesn’t work any more in this age of savvy bright sparks.

7. Be consistent, immediate, and decisive.

8. Be assertive (not passive or aggressive) and stand up for yourself in a kind way. They are looking at (and learning from) you.

9. You can set limits and boundaries for your kids. You don’t need to be mean.

10.

Screens are a privilege not a right. I don’t know how my generation ever survived without screens. Oh yeah, we played outside, a lot.

11.

Have dinner together. Ditch the screens at dinner time.

12.

If behaviour is predictable (happens a lot), it’s preventable.

13.

The more attention you pay to negative behaviour, the more of it you will get. Focus on the positives.

14.

Take responsibility for your own thoughts, feelings and actions.

15.

Make consequences related to the mistaken behaviour.

16.

Kids aren’t allowed to hit you. If they do, they learn that they can get their own way through violence.

17.

Teach your kids to breathe. In through the nose, hold, out through the nose, hold.

18.

After teaching them to breathe, teach them how to problem solve.

19.

Sing, dance, play, laugh. Look after yourself.

20.

Do Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) because it’s regarded by the United Nations as the best parenting course in the world, and it’s Aussie made. And it’s cool.

Covered Outdoor Learning Area Must be Delivered for Mulgoa Public School For many years the students of Mulgoa Public School have battled 40+ degree days, rain, hail and shine.

Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP along with Mulgoa P&C President Vicky Penna and the rest of the executive team called on the Minister of Education to fund a Covered Outdoor Learning Area (COLA) for Mulgoa Public School.

“The students and teachers at Mulgoa Public School must battle the elements every day, and often have to cancel assemblies, presentation days or special events because they have no covered, protected area” Tanya Davies said.

“For too long Mulgoa Public School has been overlooked by the Department of Education because it does not have the high enrolments of other schools”.

“But all students, no matter where they live or go to school, should have access to the best possible infrastructure to give them the best start in life”.

“That is why I am fighting to ensure that an all-weather COLA is funded and delivered for Mulgoa Public School”.

The P&C at Mulgoa Public School has been fighting to ensure the COLA is delivered for the students, parents and teachers.

“Currently there is no area within our school that accommodates our students and parents that is undercover” Vicky Penna said.

“A COLA at Mulgoa Public School would provide our students with much needed protection from the weather every day and would also provide us with a venue to hold our school events where the scorching sun and rain will not impact on their success”.

“The construction of COLA at Mulgoa Public School would provide the only learning space within school with the capacity for the whole school and its community to interact” President of the Mulgoa P&C, Vicky Penna said.

Building Designs And Construction BUILDING ORIENTATION When building in Australia, the perfect orientation for constructing your home and other structures is that the main rooms are facing north. In winter your main home rooms should receive the winter sun to warm your home. This will result in a reduced need for heaters. The problem with new home buyers is that the view from the home is important to them. Home buyers with a minimal land space (600 Sq meters or less) have no options regarding building orientation, they are very limited. But owners of more than 600 SQ meters of land have home orientation choices.

VERANDA’S It is advised that a front covered veranda shade the North and West orientation from the harsh summer sun when facing North and West. The covered veranda structure will keep the home cool in summer and keep the warmth in winter. This will allow the low winter sun to warm up the rooms through the low set north and west facing windows.

The veranda became popular in Australia around the late 1790’s – early 1810. They were introduced by colonial soldiers and free colonials that had seen and experienced the veranda during their travels to the West Indies and India. Today the veranda is still a great place to relax, sleep and entertain to keep out of the heat of the day during our hot summers.

Many verandas are converted into bedrooms if there is a need to increase the size of the home. In the 1970’s council’s made it compulsory to report your intentions by lodging a DA and CC. Currently, there are older homes that had a covered rear veranda converted into a bedroom, or rooms, many years ago that were never approved by local council. Fourth Person Arrested After Woman Allegedly Thrown From Bridge A fourth person has been charged with attempted murder after a woman was allegedly thrown from Windsor Bridge into the Hawkesbury River.

Police were called to George Street, Windsor, about 6am on Sunday 23 September 2018, when the 19-year-old woman sought help after managing to swim to the riverbank.

She told police she’d been thrown from the bridge into the river by a group of people who had held her against her will since Saturday night (22 September 2018).

Police will allege the injured woman was transported from Campbelltown to Windsor in the boot of a car.

The woman was taken to Nepean Hospital for treatment.

Officers from Hawkesbury Police Area Command commenced an investigation and arrested a 19-year-old woman after she attended Windsor Police Station on Tuesday 25 September 2018.

Just after 2pm on Wednesday 26 September 2018, a 17-year-old girl attended Windsor Police Station where she was arrested.

They were both charged with attempted murder, aggravated kidnapping, wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and robbery with wounding.

At 8.45pm on Wednesday 26 September 2018, a 22-year-old man attended Windsor Police Station where he was arrested.

He was charged with attempted murder, detain for advantage in company, aggravated robbery and wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

They all remain before the courts.

About 9am Thursday 27 September 2018, officers arrested a 16-year-old boy at a home in Wallacia and he was taken to Windsor Police Station.

The boy was charged with attempted murder, detain in company with intent to get advantage occasioning actual bodily harm, aggravated robbery, and wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was refused bail to appear before a children’s court Friday 28 September 2018.

NSAIDs - Can They Increase Your Risk Of Gastric & Duodenal Ulcers?

Stomach & duodenal ulceration & bleeding is a well-known side effect of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) including aspirin, and a major limitation to long-term use. Wallace published the following statistics (relating mainly to the older NSAIDs) in 2000: 1. ‘$8 billion’ is the estimated global value of NSAIDs sales p.a., but 2. The global ‘cost of treating gastrointestinal adverse effects of NSAIDs almost certainly exceeds this’ 3. The USA on it’s own spends over $4 billion p.a. to treat gastrointestinal side effects for just rheumatoid arthritis patients taking NSAIDs As you probably know, a healthy stomach secretes: 1. acid so powerful (pH 1) that you could use it to wash bricks, along with 2. powerful digestive enzymes that easily chop up tough proteins.

So why doesn’t the stomach digest itself? Answer: The stomach continually produces substances called ‘prostaglandins’ that activate almost all the processes by which the stomach protects itself from acid, enzymes, pathogens & physical damage (Laine L etal, 2008 p46).

NSAIDs cause gastrointestinal bleeding mainly by lowering production of prostaglandins, thereby stopping normal protection and healing of damaged stomach lining. The stomach has two enzymes that make prostaglandins, COX 1 & 2. COX 1 makes prostaglandins 24 hrs per day to activate stomach protective mechanisms. COX 2 only makes prostaglandins when damage has occurred & promotes healing of stomach lining.

Older NSAIDs such as ibuprofen naproxen and indomethacin block both COX 1 & 2 and cause high rates of stomach lesions.

Newer NSAIDs are selective for COX 2 only.

Although, Dirni (2017) states NSAIDs that block ‘COX-2 may also play a role in mucosal injury’ COX 2, selective NSAIDs are generally considered minimise stomach lining damage. However, these NSIADs definitely stop healing of stomach lining whenever any damage does occur e.g. from drinking alcohol.

Although risk varies, all NSAIDs cause some gastrointestinal toxicity. ‘Large pooled data from placebo-controlled trials show that all evaluated NSAIDs including COX-2 inhibitors, diclofenac, ibuprofen and naproxen were associated with an increased risk of gastrointestinal injury‘.

The journal ‘Australian Prescriber’ says ‘Gastrointestinal toxicity with NSAIDs, including low-dose aspirin, is highest in patients with risk factors’. Patients should be aware of their own risk factors. ‘These include increased age (>65 years), past history of peptic ulcer disease, heart disease, and co-prescription of antiplatelets, corticosteroids and anticoagulants. In addition, using higher doses of NSAIDs leads to an increased risk of upper gastrointestinal complications. Prolonged NSAID use and H. pylori infection also’ increases risk of gastrointestinal toxicity. Finally, they state ‘NSAIDs use should be at the lowest possible dose and for the shortest time’.

Nitric oxide (NO), produced naturally in the stomach from nitrate containing foods (e.g. beetroot juice) may help avert damage. NO mimics prostaglandin functions, and may help maintain stomach lining during NSAID use.

Carly started working at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in 2010 and left for maternity leave in 2011. After 5 years as a stay at home mum, Carly is very excited to be back working with the team.

Carly has 3 fur babies, Jessie a 13 year old German Shepherd, Hemi a 7 year old BullTerrier and Dixie a 1 year old Swiss Shepherd.

In her spare time, Carly loves spending time with her family, going to the beach, going to concerts and walking her fur babies.

National Veterinary Nurseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day On Friday 12th October 2018 we plan to celebrate National Veterinary Nurseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital.

It is great to acknowledge the hard work and efforts of our veterinary nurses. The nurses do a lot of work behind the scenes that you do not see or hear about. The nurses monitor the patients whilst under general anaesthetic, medicate animals whilst in hospital, answer enquiries, clean the hospital, and ensure the smooth running of the veterinary hospital. Without the veterinary nurses, we would not be able to do our job as a veterinarian.

We plan to celebrate by having a long lunch with enough food to feed an army.

We have 8 nurses at the hospital, and I hope you get to know them as you come and visit our hospital.

Sophie Mead Sophie has been completing her TAFE work experience with us for her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing since June 2016, and joined our team in October 2016 as a Kennel Hand.

Sophie started a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Advanced Studies majoring in Animal and Veterinary Bioscience at Sydney University in Feb 2018, with the aspiration of becoming a veterinarian. We are so proud of Sophie!

Sophie has owned a variety of pets throughout her life but has always had a particular fondness for the cats in the family. At the moment, Sophie has 2 dogs (Teddy and Trixie), as well as her 3 very spoiled cats (Angus, Casper and Tallulah).

Orchard Hills has become a second home to Sophie, and she loves being able to see the smiling faces of colleagues, clients, and patients alike.

Renai Lewis â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Practice Manager Renai has grown up in the Penrith area and has seen many changes over the years.

Renai joined the team in August 2014 where she was warmly welcomed by all.

Renai has several furbabies including: Alli (Golden Labrador), Cooper (a naughty Labrador), Lenny (a cat) and Flick (a Lorikeet).

Renai adores her pets and spends every spare minute with them, when she is not busy being a wife and mum to 4 adult children.

Chelsea Burcher Chelsea completed her Certificate IV in veterinary nursing at Richmond TAFE in June 2018. She started her work placement at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in January 2017 and joined our team in August 2017.

Chelsea has always wanted to work with animals since a young age and has one dog, Meg an 8 year old Jack Russell Terrier.

Chelsea loves working at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital and being part of the team. She is excited to see what the future holds.

Lizzie De Jonge Lizzie completed the Veterinary Nursing Certificate IV in July 2016.

Lizzie is currently studying the Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services at the Delta Institute, which is an animal behaviour and training course.

Lizzie began teaching the Puppy Preschool at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in Dec 2015. Lizzie is enjoying the study and the hands on experience with Puppy Preschool.

Lizzie has had many animals during her life time, at the moment she has 4 cats (Moo Cow, Donut, Chilli and Chicken), and a Labrador cross (Sonny).

Lachlan De Giorgio Lachlan started work at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in December 2017 after completing a week of work experience.

Lachlan is currently in year 11 at high school and is really interested in agriculture and all things to do with animals.

He has a dog named Chloe and a bird named Bob. Lachlan loves playing sport.

He always looks forward to coming to work to help people and see smiles on faces. Lachlan is excited to be part of the team.

Rachel Galdes Rachel graduated as a Veterinary Nurse in December 2012 at Richmond TAFE. She enjoys spending time with her friends and family when she is not at work. Rachel has a much loved Labrador Molly, and Jinx the cat.

Rachel teaches the Puppy Preschool at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital.

Jessica Hollman Jessica completed TAFE work experience with us and joined our team in Jan 2015 as a kennel hand.

Riley has a naughty Labrador named Baxter, and a cat named Waffles.

Riley has always been very passionate about the animal industry.
