Statue Unveiled on Remembrance Day This month, on Sunday the 11th of November is Remembrance Day. It marks the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice and there will be a memorial service held at the Warragamba Memorial Park at 10:45am.

The Warragamba and District ANZAC Day Committee have been fundraising for the past two years to raise $35,000 to purchase a six-foot bronze statue of the lone soldier. They are pleased to announce that they have achieved their goal and will be proudly unveiling their statue at the Remembrance Day memorial service at Warragamba Memorial Park.

Paul Grierson from Simply Bushed will be singing the Australian national anthem and Raise Your Glass, whilst Peter Paki will be singing the New Zealand national anthem at the service. The event will also include a band and choir from Caroline Chisholm Catholic College and St Dominic’s College.

Remembrance Day – Lest We Forget Remembrance Day in Australia will be a day of significance this year.

Sunday the 11th of November marks the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice, which ended the First World War in 1918.

In 1997, Governor-General William Deane issued a formal proclamation that would declare the 11th of November to be Remembrance Day. The proclamation urged all Australians to observe one minutes silence at 11:00am on the 11th of November each year. Today, the loss of Australian lives from all wars and conflicts across the world are honoured on Remembrance Day. In other allied countries around the world such as New Zealand, Canada and the United States, the 11th of November is known as Armistice Day. This is a day to remember those who died in the First World War. In Australia, flags are flown at half-mast as a sign of mourning and respect on Remembrance Day. Services across the country are held at war memorials at 11:00am, where the ‘Last Post’ is played by a bugler and one minutes silence is observed.

On Remembrance Day in 1993, Australia commemorated the day by laying to rest an Unknown Soldier in the Hall of Memory at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. The Unknown Soldier was buried in a coffin made from Tasmanian Blackwood with his bayonet and a spring of wattle by him.

Red poppies are worn on items of clothing on the 11th of November to remember those who died during war. Poppies were amongst the first flowers that came from the battlefields of northern France and Belgium during the First World War. Sprigs of rosemary are also worn on Remembrance Day and ANZAC Day. Mulgoa’s Brittanie Shipway has just completed one of her biggest roles in musical theatre, playing the lead role of comedienne Fanny Brice in Theatre & Company’s production of Funny Girl at the Parramatta Riverside Theatre recently.

The talented local actress and singer enjoyed her lead role in the successful production. “Funny Girl is probably the largest role I have tackled to date, yet strangely enough, I felt right at home with the character. Fanny Brice was an incredible comedienne ahead of her time, and she used a lot of self-deprecating humour that ended up winning her a successful career in the industry.

She was a wonderful woman to research and embody. The accent was also a heck of a lot of fun” Brittanie told the Mulgoa Valley Gazette.

Despite Funny Girl being one of Brittanie’s favourite films growing up, she put herself on a strict Barbra ban for the duration of the show. This ensured that she give the famous role her own interpretation. “Barbra was brilliant and wonderful in the role, but I’m not her and I won’t pretend to be. Babs also took on this role in the 1960’s. Why I would try and re-create a dated version of the show to a modern audience is beyond me” she humoured.

Having appeared in several musicals, Brittanie now finds singing and acting go hand in hand. You can’t quite do one without the other. “Singing and dancing on the other hand, let me tell you it ain’t that easy!” explained Brittanie.

For now, Shipway will have to wait for a well-earned break till after her busy work schedule going into the new year. “This industry has a lot of dips and waves, and fortunately I’m riding a wave this end of the year. I’m currently rehearsing Jesus Christ Superstar (Riverside Theatre) in the role of Mary which will be playing in February. I’ve also just begun rehearsals for the Summer season of Sport for Jove’s outdoor Shakespeare festival (Bella Vista in December and Leura in January), which I am so terrified and excited by. Jesus; the Joy of Christmas Not many will have heard of Pieter Bruegel. He was perhaps the most significant Dutch artist of the 16th Century. Bruegel was recognised as a pioneer of large paintings, especially of landscapes and peasant scenes.

One painting, “The Census at Bethlehem” completed in 1566, was based on the scene from the Bible’s Gospel of Luke, with Joseph and Mary arriving at the stable for the birth of their child Jesus. The painting was regarded as a classic not only because of Breugel’s eye for detail, but also because towards the bottom of the painting, among a crowd of people, we see Joseph and his pregnant wife Mary.

It is a striking scene. Children are playing. There is a snowball fight. People are preparing, cooking and eating food. Simply, people are celebrating Christmas unaware of the extraordinary event about to take place; the birth of this child, which Luke tells us, will be the birth of a Saviour bringing “good news of great joy for all people.”

The Bible declares that as we put our trust in this Saviour, Jesus, he will rescue us from the consequences of the fact that we do not treat God as we should. As you trust him, you will discover how Jesus gives us peace for today and confident hope for the future.

Please don’t be unaware of this extraordinary event; the birth of our Saviour!

Warragamba Wins Netball Club of the Year Warragamba Netball Club were recently announced as the winner of the ‘2018 Cathy Ormerod Netball Club of the Year’ by Penrith District Netball Association (PDNA). The award was presented during the PDNA Awards night held on the 28th September at Panthers Leagues Club. The award recognised Warragamba Netball Club for its significant contributions to the Associations: membership; growth and maintenance; general cooperation of the club; its executive activities; and its general improvements and progress of the club.

The award culminated in a tremendous 2018 season for Warragamba Netball Club with 97 junior members and 45 senior players. Players aged 5 to 9 in Four Net-Set-Go teams made and nurtured friendships, while they learned and developed skills in readiness for competitive grades. The seven competitive junior teams were all successful in demonstrating fair play, team work and improvement in their game. Moreover, premierships were achieved by the 17A, 13B, and 12B teams. Five senior teams were outstanding with a premiership achieved by the B7 team ‘Mistys’ and grand finalists by the B5 ‘Blue Tongues’.

“The 2018 Warragamba committee sincerely thank the contributions from all current players, umpires, coaches, families, carers and supporters and acknowledge this award belongs to all who participated in an exemplary manner that was recognised by Penrith, during the 2018 Winter Competition.

Furthermore, the committee humbly recognise the dedicated work by previous committees whose efforts have provided a trajectory of improvement for the current committee to continue” said the Committee.

Warragamba Netball Club strives to provide the local community and its surrounding neighbours a safe and inclusive environment in which players of all abilities are welcomed.

The Club currently has nine teams participating in the PDNA Summer Competition and it looks forward to the 2019 Winter Season; welcoming new and returning players, umpires, coaches and managers.

Early earthworks for Western Sydney Airport A site compound, internal fences and accessway are being set up at the northern end of Badgerys Creek Road, Badgerys Creek.

To safely access the compound, a temporary roundabout and access point needs to be built on Badgerys Creek Road. To ensure the safety of motorists and workers, some temporary traffic changes will be made during working hours. This will include temporary speed zones and lane closures, which may impact travel

times for motorists. We ask that you observe the traffic changes and obey displayed road signage at all times.

Site working hours are between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Friday and from 8am to 1pm on Saturday.

No construction work will be undertaken outside of these hours without prior notice.

Pastor’s Corner This year I have had the opportunity to travel to different parts of New South Wales. The countryside is so dry, farmers are struggling to feed their stock, and fields are dry and dusty. At the cattle sales in Gunnedah, one farmer told us that many of the farmers, just needed to sell off their livestock, or otherwise kill their remaining animals. I cannot imagine how difficult this is.

I don’t know how you feel about this issue, you may have contributed some money to help support farmers. Do you feel that you cannot do anything else to help in that situation?

May I encourage each of you to share generously, where you are able, and support those on the land, who provide so much of what we consume, when we sit down at meal times.

As a person of faith, I know that I need to talk to God about those things that concern me. Philippians 4:6 says “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” The Bible is telling us that all our concerns, those things that worry us, we should take to God in prayer. Nothing is too big a problem for God, nothing too small a problem, if we are anxious about anything at all, and we should talk to God, about those challenges in life, that concern us.

As a Father of three daughters, I have not always been able to provide immediate answers, to their requests; sometimes too, my answers have not been what they wanted to hear.

But irrespective of my response, I love each of them. Our relationship with God is similar, He is our heavenly Father, we are His children and He loves us. God does not always answer instantly, or provide answers which we want to hear, but be thankful because God always listens to us.

Please join with me in prayer, asking that rain, will fall in dry fields, stimulating new growth in crops, and replenishing food for livestock.

The Little White Church You may have noticed a hive of activity around the freshly painted and spruced up Christian Community Church in Wallacia.

A team of artists and craftsmen having been working over the last few weeks to bring history alive with renovations inside and outside of the small church.

Their main aim is to create the atmosphere of a quaint ‘Old Bush Chapel’, with charm and elegance for small weddings and functions.

The church has a long and surprising history that dates back further than the year 1927, when it was ‘built’ in Wallacia. But, they will tell you more about that next time.

Stage one of three will be completed in time for the Christmas Carols night on the 9th of December (6:00pm to 7.30pm) this year.

Preparation 1. Cook gnocchi in a saucepan of boiling salted water for 2 minutes or until gnocchi rise to the top. Drain.

2. Heat oil in a large frying pan over high heat. Cook gnocchi, stirring occasionally for 2 to 3 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from heat. Season with salt and pepper.

Cool 5 minutes.

3. Meanwhile, place beans in a bowl. Cover with boiling water.

Stand 2 minutes. Drain. Combine pesto and lemon juice.

4. Toss gnocchi, beans, kale, prawns, tomato and radish together in a large bowl. Divide among serving bowls.

Quick Nutella Mousse 100g dark chocolate, chopped 300ml thickened cream, chilled 1/2 cup (165g) Nutella Crumbled Cadbury Flake chocolate bar, to serve Preparation 1. Place dark chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water (make sure bowl doesn’t touch the water).

Stir with a metal spoon for 3-4 mins or until chocolate just melts. Set aside for 5 mins to cool slightly.

2. Use an electric mixer to whisk the cream in a large bowl until soft peaks form. Add the Nutella and whisk until the mixture is just combined. Add the melted chocolate. Use a large metal spoon to gently marble.

We all want our kids to do well and to be well. One of the things that determines social and emotional wellbeing is “resilience”. Resilience is regarded as the ability of an individual to access resources to prevent, minimise, or overcome hardship.

My favourite definition of resilience comes from a draft paper titled “Whole School Matters” (September, 2008)…

“The capacity to deal constructively with change or challenge, allowing the person to maintain or re-establish their social and emotional wellbeing in the face of difficult events. It involves thoughts, feelings, and actions.”

The more protective factors a child has, the more resilient the child will be. The protective factors are environments which provide: a sense of connection and belonging; physical and emotional safety; warm, caring and supportive relationships; and the opportunity for and recognition of achievement.

Resilience is a complex interaction of relationships, genetics and environmental factors (family, school, work, society).

The optimal environment for children is a positive one with warm reciprocal relationships, realistic expectations, boundaries and limits, and assertive discipline. Children learn resilience through feeling heard and understood, and feeling that they belong. The supports in a child’s environment build inner strengths as children learn coping skills, and about feelings and how to manage them, within the context of relationships with significant others.

There is a lot of talk these days about teaching resilience to children in school. Schools are excellent places for children to experience the protective factors mentioned above. However, we can’t treat resilience as something that our children must learn, like they learn maths, or the rules of whichever sport they choose to play. Parents are their child’s first teachers and there needs to be a greater focus on parents learning positive parenting skills and providing an environment in which our children grow their resilience skills, rather than placing the onus on children to learn resilience.

What is BYOD? BYOD stands for Bring Your Own Device. In educational settings, the initiative centres around taking a device, such as a laptop or tablet, to school for learning purposes. This concept has been around for over five years now and has been met with mixed opinions and concerns. Undeniably, however, is the need for new models of learning given the availability of personal mobile devices and other technology in the 21st century. According to the NSW Department of Education (2018), “Schools are in a position to harness students’ connection to their own personal mobile devices for the purpose of developing 21st century learning skills and for fostering digital literacy, fluency and citizenship in a safe environment”.

Apart from primarily endeavouring to integrate technology more extensively in education to promote collaborative, personalised and accessible options for learning, economics plays a huge role in the argument for the Bring Your Own Device program. Technology investments are expensive for schools, especially given the probability of needing to update resources as they become obsolete after a few years. With students bringing their own personal devices, the school can then redirect funding to other areas in technology, including the purchase and maintenance of interactive whiteboards.

BYOD also encourages students to take responsibility for their learning, manage their own tasks and collaborate with others. Every school implementing this initiative should have a BYOD Policy and students made aware of expectations for appropriate online behaviour, including social media use. Most of these policies align directly with school welfare policies of expected behaviour, which in turn also address matters such as cyberbullying.

The biggest concerns surrounding the BYOD Program are the possible distraction that can occur with technology being so readily available to students in the classroom and the possible inequity of students from lower socio-economic backgrounds that cannot afford to purchase the devices in the first place. Most NSW schools have been proactive in addressing these concerns with policies, procedures and alternative arrangements put in place to ensure BYOD is successful for all students. Building Designs And Construction SOLID WALLS AND GLASS IN WINDOWS It is recommended that in winter, walls facing the North and West are constructed of a solid mass such as brick or concrete. While these solid walls are facing the sun in winter they will warm up during the day and radiate warmth throughout the home. These walls will take some time to cool down and this will reduce time to warm up your home in winter with an electric or wood fired heater and this should reduce also your power bill. In summer these solid walls will take some time to warm up after the cool night and in most cases will stay cool during the day because of the shielding of the veranda or other shade structures built around your home.

Glass windows facing the north and west must be of a high quality aluminium or timber/cedar structure. They must be totally sealed around the wall frame with no gaps or openings. Most of your heat loss or gain into your home, is through your windows and doors.

The glass in the windows is a very critical item. Glass types are specified in NSW by the Basix requirements. Glass in windows are proposed by architects and building designers to comply with the Basix certificate. Windows facing North, West, South or East can have different glass to suit the orientation of the home. The windows size is also a very important item. Stay with the recommended specified size and don’t make changes unless approved by your architect or building designer. If you make changes without the approval of your designer, the construction will be either too hot or too cold to live in.

Doors are also an important item to consider. It is recommended that all exterior doors to be solid with a rubber bottom seal attached, this makes the door seal proof provided that the door has no gaps to let the air in. Interior doors can be of the core variety and would help if they have the same or similar rubber seal on the bottom of the door.

Orientation is an important item that could make you fry in summer or freeze in winter. On top of that, a hefty increase in power energy bills will occur if orientation of your home was neglected.

Wollondilly Councillors Oppose Warragamba Dam Wall Raising

At last month’s Council meeting, Councillors voted to support a Notice of Motion (NOM) opposing the State Government’s plan to raise the Warragamba Dam Wall for flood mitigation.

Council agreed to write to the NSW Premier condemning the recent amendment to the National Parks and Wildlife Act to allow the World Heritage Listed Blue Mountains National Park to be flooded with the raising of Warragamba Dam. At the November meeting, Councillors will consider allocating funds to a public education campaign about the potential impact of raising the dam wall on the Burragorang Valley. The NSW Labor Opposition and neighbouring councils will be asked to support this campaign.

Mayor Judith Hannan said, “Although we understand the need for a flood strategy for the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley and recognise the motivation to protect the people and properties in this area, we do not support a solution that floods the Burragorang Valley.”

“We need to protect Aboriginal cultural heritage as well as the

natural environment, plant and animal species. Once we have damaged this heritage it can’t be replaced.”

“When Warragamba Dam spills now, areas upstream of the dam are inundated. With the raising of the dam by around 14 metres this flooding will last for longer periods of time and will extend over a much greater area,” she said.

In May 2017, the NSW Government released Resilient Valley, Resilient Communities - the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley Flood Risk Management Strategy, providing a long-term framework to manage flood risk in the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley.

According to the Infrastructure NSW website, other options such as river diversion channels, dredging the HawkesburyNepean River or voluntary house re-purchase in flood risk areas have been considered.

The website states that the flood strategy has concluded that “raising Warragamba Dam by around 14 metres is the best infrastructure option to reduce flood risk from floodwaters from the Warragamba River catchment.”

It states, “Over 25,000 residential properties and two million square metres of commercial space are currently subject to flood risk. Preventing future development in the areas will not address the risk to existing properties.”

Councillors are concerned that the dam raising will allow for much more development at the cost of the natural environment.

WaterNSW, as the owner and operator of Warragamba Dam, has commenced consultation on the proposal and will undertake an environmental assessment and detailed concept design.

NSAIDs - Can They Affect Your Kidneys?

Can NSAIDs effect your Kidneys? The answer is yes. Whelton & Watson state that ‘in most general populations, as encountered by family physicians in the developed world, approximately 1–3% of persons exposed to an NSAID will manifest one of a variety of renal functional abnormalities typically requiring physician intervention’. It’s a small percentage but given the high rates of OTC & prescription NSAID intake, the number of at-risk people is very high.

Kidneys produce prostaglandins continuously, as do many body organs. Prostaglandins act locally to maintain proper blood flow to local tissue, fluid flow from blood to tissue, tissue repair processes, etc. NSAIDs alter normal prostaglandin production, the possible effects of which we saw last month in the stomach.

They also affect the kidney.

In descending order of clinical frequency renal abnormalities induced by NSAIDs include: 1.

Fluid retention and electrolyte disturbances 2.

Acute deterioration of kidney function 3.

Nephrotic Syndrome with interstitial nephritis 4.

Papillary necrosis Everyone ingesting an NSAID will experience some fluid (sodium & water) retention, but in the absence of obvious renal impairment, <5% of patients will manifest with obvious oedema, which is usually benign, and readily reversible on drug discontinuation. The most important electrolyte alteration is potassium retention. This becomes important in patients suffering renal impairment, heart failure, diabetes, on potassium sparing diuretics, or on blood pressure drugs called ACE inhibitors

amongst other things. Many people wanting pain relief are older and may fall into these groups.

NSAIDS will not cause reduction in kidney filtration in normal individuals but 1-0.5% of people taking NSAIDs chronically will manifest â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;acute deterioration of renal functionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. At risk patients include those with severe dehydration, congestive heart failure, cirrhosis, chronic kidney disease, nephrotic syndrome, those over 80yo. These people may have compromised renal function.

Kidney cells produce prostaglandins to compensate for this trying to normalise function. Altering prostaglandin production by kidney cells in this situation can lead to acute kidney failure.

Failure to stop NSAID use may lead to the requirement for temporary dialysis. This is usually reversible 2-7 days, sometimes weeks, after drug discontinuation.

Very infrequently, NSAIDs may lead to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Nephrotic Syndromeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;: foamy protein-filled urine, low blood albumin, high blood lipids, swelling & weight-gain; complicated by hypertension, blood clots & infections. Risk factors are obscure. The condition is usually reversible on drug discontinuation.

Papillary necrosis involves the death of certain kidney cells and irreversible kidney damage. This can occur acutely (hrs-days after a single dose) or chronically (months to years of NSAID ingestion).

The acute form is an extremely rare event at recommended dosages. However, nearly all NSAIDs produced some level of papillary necrosis in preclinical animal-model studies.

In summary, NSAIDs may be useful, but we need to remember, they also have downsides often for the very people whom may be most in need of pain & inflammation relief.

Watch Out - Snakes Are Out and About!!

With the warmer weather upon us, snakes are coming out of hibernation.

Your dog or cat may see a snake moving in the yard and its first instinct is to chase it.

The snake may attack and bite your pet as a form of defence.

Signs of snake envenomation includes: muscular weakness, wobbliness or paralysis, increased respiratory effort, trembling, salivation, vomiting, slower blood clotting time, bruising, blood in the urine, and abnormal neurological signs (including collapse, seizure, tremors, pupil enlargement).

If you are concerned that your pet has been bitten by a snake, call us immediately.

The sooner the snake anti venom is given, then higher the chance of survival.

The Department of Planning and Environment have been working with all levels of government through the Planning Partnership to draft the Stage 1 Land Use and Infrastructure Implementation Plan (Stage 1 Plan) for the Aerotropolis. This Plan provides an overview of proposed land uses, sequence of development as well as time frame for the land around Western Sydney Airport.

The Stage 1 Plan is now on exhibition. Feedback collected during the exhibition period will help inform more detailed planning work to ensure final plans for the Aerotropolis are shaped by the people who will be living and working here. I would urge all local residents to make a submission with your thoughts about the Stage 1 Plan for the Aerotropolis.

The exhibition period has been extended and you can provide feedback until 2 November 2018.

Several local land owners’ groups have now been organised – the Aerotropolis Agribusiness Action Group Bringelly as well as the WSA Agribusiness Landowner Group. Both these groups are very active, and some smaller groups of land owners have also been established. There is a lot of concern that so much of the area to the north and west of the Airport will be zoned Agriculture and Agribusiness.

The NSW Golf Open Championship returns to Luddenham over four days in November at Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club.

Once again Luddenham will host the Championships, from Thursday 8 – Sunday 11 November. This event attracts the cream of Australia’s golfing elite along with some of the world’s best players. The tournament is decided over four rounds, at the end of which 156 players are whittled down to one winner. Not only can you see some of the best PGA golfers in action, this event offers spectators the unique opportunity to walk the fairways alongside the players.

Over the past month, Luddenham’s lack of sewerage has hit the news. Luddenham needs to have the sewer it has been promised for so long, but never delivered.

The early earth works on Western Sydney Airport are well and truly underway. To enable major earthworks at WSA, a 3.2km section of the TransGrid-owned 330kV single transmission line had to be laid underground, primarily along the perimeter of the airport site. All the Underground cables have now been laid and work on the transition towers and switching stations is well underway.
