Santa is Ridin’ with the Firies Santa Claus will be trading in his sleigh for a fire truck this month, with the man in the big red suit joining Wallacia Rural Fire Brigade for the Santa Run in Wallacia.

The Santa Run will visit Wallacia on Monday 24th December (Christmas Eve), beginning at 3:00pm in the afternoon where the fire truck will begin at William Street.

It’s a great opportunity to come and say hi to Santa and take photos. Santa will have lollies onboard for the kids during each stop. Don’t forget to listen out for the truck as it drives through the local streets.

“For over 50 years, Wallacia Rural Fire Brigade have been helping Santa to get around Wallacia and to see all the kids on Christmas Eve. Santa has once again asked the crew from Wallacia Rural Fire Brigade to help him get around” said Jody Preston, Captain of Wallacia Rural Fire Brigade.

“We look forward to Santa visiting here and riding in the truck over Christmas every year. It’s a great local community event that everyone enjoys” added Jody.

The month of December is here. Do you know what that also means? That’s right, it’s Summer! Days spent outside with the sun blazing down upon us. It’s for Real!

The young boy patiently listened as his Scripture Teacher explained the Christmas Story.

When the teacher had finished, the boy put up his hand to ask the question that had been troubling him, “But sir, how do you know it’s true?

How do you know this Jesus stuff isn’t a fairy tale?

Like Santa? Like the tooth fairy?”

Good question!

Many adults have grown up thinking the Jesus story is just that, a story. They think there’s as much truth about the events surrounding Jesus birth, life, death and resurrection as there is about the Easter Bunny!

So how can you know it’s true? And more importantly, what’s the significance of a baby born 2000 years ago?

The Bible helpfully answers these questions. Consider Luke’s New Testament account of Jesus. Luke begins by telling us how he put it together; having carefully investigated the facts, Luke wrote an orderly account based on eyewitnesses. Therefore, we can be confident, this is no fairy tale! It’s for real!

As for “Why Jesus was born,” Luke tells us what the angel said as it announced Jesus’ birth to a surprised group of shepherds; “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.”

Here’s the simple, amazing answer – Jesus was born to be a Saviour!

Local Club to Launch All-Inclusive Program The Wollondilly Redbacks Junior AFL Club will be implementing the Cygnet Program early next year, an all-inclusive program designed to encourage the movement and active lifestyle choices and activities for children with additional needs.

Mitchell Seal and wife Melinda have three children, of which two have a form of Autism. Mitchell, a qualified Junior AFL Coach and Melinda, an Early Childhood Teacher, previously implemented a program to help their son Eamon and those with the same desires that have been restricted by barriers; giving them a chance to get involved. They ran that program at a different club for a year and received good participation.

“In discussions this year with our Club President, Tracy Jedrzejewski, we wanted to take the fact that Wollondilly prides itself on our inclusive nature and progress it by introducing the Cygnet Program that we have had such success with before, but this time at the Wollondilly Redbacks.

We believe there are a number of children with additional needs in and around our area that could benefit greatly, and we aim to provide them that opportunity” explained Mitchell.

“This is a general movement and activities program designed to get the children involved and having fun. Some of it will be with AFL equipment, but we will also have soccer balls, basketballs, tennis balls, and skipping ropes, so the equipment will drive the activities. This is about their inclusion as the sole driver of this program. The more children we can have involved in the program, the better for the children, the better for their families and the better for the wider community, so please help us spread the word” he said.

The program is open for preschool through to high school children. It will be free for participants and will not only provide the activities for the children but aims to also provide a supportive community for their families.

Pastor’s Corner The story of the first Christmas, is of a young couple Joseph and Mary. They travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem, but Mary is pregnant, the birth is imminent. Like many parents at such a time, they are anxious, Bethlehem is busy, and there is no room at the inn for them to stay, so a stable will be the birth place for this child. A baby boy is born and He is to be called Jesus.

The story does not end there, really it is only the beginning.

This boy named Jesus, is God’s Son, and He came here for a purpose which involves each one of us. “For God so loved the world that he gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16). God’s love for you and me, had come to earth. Jesus’ purpose for being here was to save us from judgment, to stand in our place for our sins, to bring forgiveness for what we have done wrong, including things like not telling the complete truth or not loving others and ignoring God’s ways. Jesus was to die on the Cross, He would take our place.

Christmas for some is a time of loneliness, our family and friends may be in other places; perhaps too we grieve the loss of loved ones; Then there are those important relationships that have broken down, you were hurt, so you never see or speak to each other. May I encourage you ; include others in your family celebrations; share generously what you have with others; and learn to forgive those that have hurt you.

I would like to invite you to attend our Christmas Breakfast on Sunday 16th December at 8am. Over a sumptuous breakfast, let us remember the message of Jesus, that is not just a story of a little baby born in a stable, it is about Jesus the Son of God, who loves us and forgives us.

The First Christmas Tree With Christmas almost here, you may notice the wide range of red and green decorations filling up the shelves in your local supermarket, crowds of people rushing through stores in search of the perfect stocking filler and not to forget the blissful setting up of the Christmas tree.

Have you ever stopped for a moment and wondered when and where this jolly Christmas tradition started? How has it managed to imprint itself so finely in the heart and soul of Christmas? There is no doubt that to many it would be unthinkable to celebrate the festive season without the family all coming together to share the experience of decorating the Christmas tree.

It’s suggested that out of all the many traditions celebrated during this time, the Christmas tree has one of the most significant and interesting origins. Primarily, it is believed that the first Christmas tree goes way back to the 16th century in Eastern Germany, where a small group of townspeople decorated evergreens with paper roses, sweet fruits such as apples, tinsel and a big variety of ornaments that continue to be used today such as baubles, candy canes and the symbolic angel or star that is placed on the top of the tree to represent Christianity.

The tradition only became significantly popular around the mid-19th century, when the upper middle-class families began to follow the footsteps of Queen Victoria, who embraced the decorating of an evergreen each Christmas. Since then, the tradition has spread worldwide, with millions of trees being produced each year and most importantly, millions of families worldwide all coming together to share the Christmas spirit.

Wollondilly in Focus Book Launch Wollondilly Library is inviting residents to attend a free book launch with local writer and long-time resident of Wollondilly, James Whitfield.

James will talk about his newly published book ‘Wollondilly in Focus’ on Thursday 13 December at 4.30pm in the View Room at the Library.

The book contains over 500 photographs, predominately in colour.

It is not an historical reference book but a pictorial overview of all the towns and villages in the Wollondilly Shire, as seen through the camera lens.

James was born in Picton in 1942, moved to Tahmoor at the age of one and has lived there ever since. Both sides of his family, the Bollards and Whitfields, were early settlers in Wollondilly.

The book will be for sale on the day and signed by James. This would make a great Christmas gift for family and friends, both here and overseas.

Proceeds from sales of this book will be donated to the Macarthur Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Service.

Gazette Cadet – Georgia’s Journey There’s nothing quite as exciting as having the opportunity to learn about something you are passionate about. I was recently given the opportunity to carry out my year 10 work experience at the District Gazette. I can still remember the moment I found out I would be doing work experience there. It was followed by an obnoxiously loud squeal of utter excitement that my parents swore the whole street would have heard!

Being a passionate writer who has wanted to publish a book since the age of 8, I found that learning about the media and journalism in our local community to be inspiring and very interesting. As a teenager, I have always relied on my writing to voice many things I am unable to speak. Writing has always held significance in my life, as it felt like an escape.

What an amazing week it was. I was welcomed by a warm and friendly team, all of whom shared a laugh (and a sigh) as we worked tirelessly towards the December deadlines. As we worked together towards the last paper of the year, I was given exciting tasks like assisting with social media updates, artwork designing and of course writing stories (including this one!) Learning about how the District Gazette runs and the busy nature of the paper at deadline time was a thrilling experience.

It has been an eye opening and life changing experience that I will cherish. The District Gazette has been the ideal place of work experience for me and I would recommend this to any student wishing to pursue a career in the media or even for those who love writing. WHAT'S COOKING

Christmas Tree Cakes Ingredients 370g pkt chocolate cake mix 20g butter 200g white chocolate melts, melted and cooled slightly 1 pkt rainbow choc chips (or mini M&Ms) 6 waffle ice cream cones 2 eggs

Preparation 1. Preheat oven to 180C or 160C fan-forced. Cut out 6 squares of non-stick baking paper each about 22cm square. Stand 6 empty, clean cans on a baking tray and place a waffle cone, pointy end down in each. Place baking paper square onto each cone and gently push in until the paper lines the cone; staple in place to hold shape. Trim off excess paper at the top. Line 6 holes of a medium-sized muffin pan with paper cases.

2. Make up cake mixture with butter, eggs and water according to packet directions. Carefully spoon half the mixture into the paper-lined cones (the weight of the batter will hold the paper down and seal the pointed end).

Try to stand the cones as upright as possible though they will lean slightly. Bake for 35 mins until cakes are firm when gently touched.

3. Remove cones from tins and lay on a wire rack to cool for 5 mins. Carefully break cones to release cakes. Peel away paper, cool completely. Meanwhile bake remaining batter in prepared muffin tins for 20 mins or until they spring back to a gentle touch. Cool completely.

4. To assemble, cut the rounded ends from the cone-shaped cakes so that they sit flat. Cut off and discard the domed tops of the cupcakes so they have a flat surface. Working on one at a time use a small teaspoon to drizzle melted chocolate onto the point of the cone-shaped cakes, letting it run down the sides. Before the chocolate sets, sprinkle with rainbow choc chips (or chosen decoration).

5. Spread a cupcake with chocolate and place cone-shaped cake on top. Sprinkle rainbow choc chips around the edge.

Repeat with remaining cakes, chocolate and rainbow choc chips. Leave to set.

Tired kids wrapping up a year of school. Lots of parties, performances, concerts, awards ceremonies, etc.

Tired parents wrapping up a year of work. Lots of parties and taking kids to all of the above mentioned frivolities.

And shopping. In the heat of Summer.

Why is there no peace and goodwill in the lead-up to Christmas? This is the time of year where the familiar refrain of “if you don’t be good, Santa won’t come” is heard.

This is an empty threat, and kids know it. The parent is not being consistent, immediate, or decisive. And it’s completely and utterly ineffective. It does not focus on desirable behaviour, and it does not teach your child new skills and behaviours.

So, what should we do instead? Have a well thought out plan, and communicate it to the kids. Communicate your expectations in advance.

Tell the kids the who, what, where, when, why, and how of the particular event. Make sure that you are not going out when it is usually the child’s naptime, or when s/he is hungry. Take a bag of snacks and anything else you might need.

Communicate the ground rules. Things like ‘hold my hand in the car park’, ‘stay close to the trolley’. Note that these rules are worded in the positive. Tell the kids what you want them to do instead of what you don’t want them to do.

Organise some engaging activities for when there is some waiting time. For example, a Where’s Wally book, some pipe cleaners, a Rubik’s cube, colouring in.

Communicate the rewards that the children will receive for desirable behaviour – descriptive praise (immediate!), a trip to the park, an extra story at bedtime. And communicate the consequences if they do not comply – reminder of the rules, logical consequence, quiet time, time out (yes, you can do time out when out), loss of reward.

At the end of the event, sit down with the kids and talk about what went well, and what you could do differently next time.

I know of a Mum who took her four kids (one was a baby) camping, for a week, by herself, using the above Planning Ahead strategy. What a champion.

Like all good plans, you have to be consistent and stick to it.

The choice of style for the design of your new home is an individual issue that all partners will have to agree on. We humans came a long way from our first shelter the cave, to where we are today sometimes called the concrete jungle. In many cases there is no difference when we use to live in a sheltered cave to where we live today, we all need a roof over our heads like in the cave days and we still have these same needs today.

When designing a home the first thing we want is to establish a plan or layout plan of all the required rooms we need. The type of rooms and the dimensions of each room will determine the size of the home. The size of a home is calculated in square metres (m2).

A square meter is the length times the width of a room or home.

Example: 6.0 meter long room multiplied by 4.50 meter wide room is a 2.7 square meter room.

We are Relocating to Bigger Premises We will be relocating to bigger premises in the next few months.

We will be located on the same road as we are currently on, Wentworth Road, but just further down the road.

The new premises have been renovated to accommodate a veterinary hospital. The premises are huge! There are double brick walls, 3m high ceilings and a green bull nosed verandah around the front of the building. We will even have a concrete driveway and carpark! There will still be an off leash park in the front yard for you and your dogs to enjoy.

We can’t wait!!!!!

Camille purchased the veterinary hospital business nearly 9 years ago and there has been steady and continual growth of the business in this time.

We started off with 4 staff and have grown to 15 staff members. We have definitely outgrown the current premises!

We are unsure of the date of the relocation at this time, as there is still some work to be completed and all the tradesmen go on holiday over the New Year. We will let you know as soon as we know.

We are so excited, we cannot wait for you to visit our large country practice!

Anti-Inflammatories – Should I Take Them Before I Play Endurance Sports?

Participation in endurance sports, such as fun runs and half & full marathons is growing worldwide. Sports such as soccer, rugby league/union, AFL, hockey, etc might also be classed as endurance sports. Many people engage in these sports without adequate training or medical information or experience. Many try to overcome pain during and after sports by taking over the counter analgesics. Should participants in these activities take analgesics prior to the events?

An article published in the peer-reviewed open access medical journal ‘BMJ Open’ in 2013, takes a look at this issue & makes for interesting reading.

The authors were interested in this subject since ‘previous studies have shown that the use and abuse of analgesics in sports is frequent and possibly dangerous, and that the incidence and severity of electrolyte disturbances, gastrointestinal and renal adverse events during and after racing double after taking analgesics’.

The study looked at 3913 of 7048 participants in the Bonn marathon (Germany) in 2010. Participants returned questionnaires, which gave researchers details of: 1. the intensity of pre-race analgesic consumption by participants 2. the incidence of adverse events in analgesic users compared to non-users.

So, what did this study find?

1.

With respect to race withdrawal a. There was no significant difference in premature race withdrawal for people taking or not taking analgesics b. withdrawal due to muscle cramps was rare, but significantly more frequent in people not taking analgesics 2.

With respect to overall adverse events a. The analgesics cohort had an almost 5 times higher incidence of adverse events (overall risk difference of 13%). b. Adverse events increased significantly with increasing analgesic dose. c. Race withdrawal because of gastrointestinal adverse events was significantly more frequent in participants taking analgesics. d. Nine respondents reported temporary hospital admittance: i. 3 for temporary kidney failure (post-ibuprofen ingestion), ii. 4 with bleeds (post-aspirin ingestion) and

iii. 2 cardiac infarctions (post-aspirin ingestion). e. The people who took no analgesics reported no hospital admittance 3.

The above adverse effects were significant at normal ‘over the counter’ doses, The study pinpoints the ‘unexpected risk of the prophylactic use of these drugs in sports’, with no apparent benefit for the users. The authors concluded that the ‘use of analgesics before participating in endurance sports may cause many potentially serious, unwanted adverse events that increase with increasing analgesic dose’ and that ‘analgesic use before endurance sports appears to pose an as yet unrecognised medical problem’.

The analgesics above are of course all non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs that block prostaglandin production. As you now know, prostaglandins don’t just mediate pain. They also maintain good blood flow in compromised tissues and aid repair of damaged tissues, likely a key reason why incidence of organ damage was five times more frequent in participants using analgesics.

This article is not meant to scare people off taking medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatories when these are indicated. However, for participants in endurance events it may be important to realise that taking such medications prophylactically prior to an event may have unintended medical consequences, with little or no benefit for the athlete at race end.

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington The Western Sydney Airport revealed concepts for the airport’s Visitor Centre that will be built on Eaton Road, Luddenham. This will give the community the chance to watch the airport come to life right before our eyes. Western Sydney Airport Chief Executive, Graham Millett, said the visitor centre will use digital and augmented reality technologies to give the public an immersive experience. “We want the public to be a part of the journey and discover the airport’s story, particularly the benefits it will bring to the region in terms of jobs and opportunities” Mr Millett said. Community and school groups as well as local and international visitors and members of the public will enjoy free access. The contract to design and build the facility in time to open for the community in mid-2019, was awarded to Australian construction firm Watpac.

Well done to Western Sydney Airport for donating 19 big round bales of meadow hay to local farmers as well the Luddenham Progress Association that organised and distributed and to the Luddenham Show Society that allowed the hay to be stored and picked up from the Showground. A great team effort that may happen again soon.

On Monday 19th November, the shovels were in the ground along The Northern Road, with the first sod turned for the fourth stage of The Northern Road upgrade between Mersey Road at Bringelly and Eaton Road at Luddenham. The start of construction was started with Federal Minister for Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population the Hon Alan Tudge MP and the NSW Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight the Hon Melinda Pavey turning the first sod. The fourth stage of the upgrade included building 5.5 kilometres of new road around the Western Sydney Airport site. More than 15,000 vehicles currently use this section of The Northern Road daily. This section is expected to open to traffic in 2021.

March saw the signing of the Western Sydney City Deal. Eight Local Councils, State and Federal Leaders putting Western Sydney and its people first. The Western Sydney City Deal is a new and bold approach to managing cities and economies.

During April, work on the Sydney Science Park in Luddenham. Sydney Science Park is a $5bn project that will create an internationally recognised epicentre for research and development in the heart of Western Sydney as well as the release of the recommended corridor of land for the Outer Sydney Orbital for a possible future motorway and freight rail line.

September saw Western Sydney Airport construction get underway with a Ground-Breaking Ceremony by the Prime Minster.

In October, the Department of Planning and Environment release the Stage 1 Land Use and Infrastructure Implementation Plan (Stage 1 Plan) for the Aerotropolis. This Plan provides an overview of proposed land uses, sequence of development as well as time frame for the Land around Western Sydney Airport.
