Paula’s Extraordinary Work Our Community Pantry Bargo is an amazing initiative started by Paula Zrilic in 2017, providing affordable groceries and meals to the local community, whilst addressing food wastage.

“We began in 2017 in Tahmoor, before moving to Bargo this year. After seeing that there was a need for food that was affordable for families and individuals and a way of obtaining food that was often wasted and used as landfill, I started Our Community Pantry Bargo” said Paula Zrilic.

Our Community Pantry Bargo is open on Tuesday mornings from 10:00am till 1:00pm and provides a wide range of discounted grocery items, as well as frozen meals which cost $6 for vegetarian or $10 for nonvegetarian. Free fruit and vegetables are also available.

“The Pantry is open to anyone. You don’t require a health care card to purchase our products. If you can’t make it here on Tuesdays, we have a click and collect option where we list the food we have left online each week, and you can collect later that day” explained Paula.

The local service has grown dramatically, since opening in Bargo this year. There are currently 30 hard working volunteers who help at the Pantry, which often has up to 180 customers visiting in the three hours that it is open each Tuesday. With demand at a high, they plan on opening more sites soon as well as launching evening sessions. Warragamba has been included as a potential future site.

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington August is the month of Annual General Meetings, the Progress Associations meeting was on Wednesday 1st at 8pm in the Hall, anyone that lives in Luddenham are always welcome to attend future meetings and become a member (new members welcome).

On Wednesday the 8th at 8pm at the Showground, the Show Society will hold its AGM - once again new members are welcome and membership is available to residents of the District (not just Luddenham).

During July Federal Member for Hume, Angus Taylor announced that the $1.6 billion upgrade of The Northern Road had reached a major milestone with a contract being awarded to a joint venture between Ertech Pty Limited and Georgiou Group Pty Ltd for construction of Stage 4, between Mersey Road at Bringelly and Eaton Road at Luddenham. Angus Taylor said, “The upgrade of Stage 4 between Mersey Road at Bringelly and Eaton Road at Luddenham is expected to start in October 2018 and be completed in early 2021. Following the opening in early April this year of the upgraded section of The Northern Road between The Old Northern Road and Peter Brock Drive, work on upgrading the road between Peter Brock Drive and Mersey Road, and between Glenmore Parkway and Jamison Road, is progressing well.” Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure and Cities, Paul Fletcher said the upgrade was a crucial piece of the puzzle as the Turnbull Government’s $5.3 billion Western Sydney Airport takes shape. “A 5.7-kilometre stretch of The Northern Road will be realigned and new access points to the site of the Western Sydney Airport will be built, ensuring the airport can be completed, as planned, in the mid-2020s,” A woman suffered a stab wound to her neck and hand, while a man suffered a stab wound to his chest and stomach following a home invasion at Bringelly on the 16th of July. While Police officers were responding to the home invasion, a second crime scene was established after a car crashed into a tree on The Northern Road, Luddenham. The male driver of the vehicle was found suffering a gun-shot wound; his female passenger was uninjured. Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

At the Luddenham Progress meeting in July it was great to have Tanya Davies MP and Chris Patterson MP, the Local State Members of Parliament to talk about local issues including - getting a reticulated sewerage system for Luddenham - it has been promised for so long, but always keeps being pushed back, also with WSA approved and work about to start, along with the significant infrastructure construction taking place, members wanted to know about potential changes to local zoning.

After growing her hair long for many years, local resident Teagan Jennings made the brave decision last month to get 36 centimetres of her hair cut off to donate to Variety the Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Charity, Hair with Heart, helping to make wigs for children who are not able to grow hair or lose hair.

Silverdale hairdresser Tanya Edgar from Tanz and Hair was chosen to assist with Teaganâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s haircut, raising valuable funds for the worthy charity. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Many of us wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t realise what itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like not to be able to grow hair or lose hair due to an illness or condition. I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t imagine what these poor children would be feeling, so to be able to help even just one child makes me incredibly happyâ&#x20AC;? said Teagan. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We felt very honoured to help out Teagan. She is a true inspiration to us allâ&#x20AC;? added Tanya.

When making the decision to get her hair cut for charity, Teagan wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sure about the support she would get and had the initial goal of raising $500. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There was an overwhelming response and the pure generosity of people have meant that I have managed to raise over $1,400â&#x20AC;? Teagan beamed.

Now that sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sporting her new, shorter stylish hairstyle, Teagan has this message for anyone wanting to cut their hair and raise money for charity, â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is an emotional experience, especially knowing that what you are doing is for a good cause. I am fortunate enough to be able to easily grow my hair, unlike so many people, so I feel honoured to be able to help a beautiful little child. My message would be to do it. It is such a rewarding experience and you definitely wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t regret itâ&#x20AC;?.

Work starts on All Abilities Playground Work is underway on the first stage of building the new All Abilities Playground at Warragamba. The old retaining wall, stairs and footpaths on the 14th St side of the park are being removed and replaced and the construction of new accessible parking should start in the not too distant future. This state of the art playground is costing over $1 million dollars and once complete should be an amazing facility for the local community as well as help boost the local economy by increasing the number of visitors into the village.

VPA for Lion Park development (Allam Homes) Community feedback is sought on a draft Voluntary Planning Agreement (VPA) for the larger of the two lion park sites. This VPA lays out the infrastructure that the developer is offering to provide the community if the development proceeds. Details of the proposal are available on council’s website and at the neighbourhood centre and I’d strongly encourage everyone to have a look at what is proposed and make a submission.

Submissions close on the 17th August.

Roads Program The next stage of work on Silverdale Rd will start in the next few months, with the road being completely redone in asphalt between Ridgehaven Rd and Donohoe Pl. This is part of a larger works program recently supported by council that will see almost $18 million dollars spent over the next 5 years on much needed road and associated infrastructure upgrades in North Ward, with a significant amount of that work to happen in the Warragamba/Silverdale area. This includes a lot of major work on Silverdale Rd (which will all be in asphalt) as well as work on Warradale Rd, Marsh Rd, Taylors Rd, Bents Basin Rd, Waterhouse Dr and Farnsworth Ave. In addition to this at the last council meeting I moved a unanimously supported report that will allow initial technical studies to be done to facilitate adding extra lane/s on Silverdale Rd at Baines Hill between the bridge and the roundabout.

Weighing the Evidence Sadly, some people today dismiss claims about Jesus or the Bible because they think “there is no evidence” for either. Yet, this is strange, because any serious investigation of the evidence reveals overwhelming support for the reliability of the claims about Jesus and the reliability of the Bible.

People who decide to follow Jesus don’t leave their brains at the door. We carefully weigh the evidence, recognise its reliability, then decide to commit our lives to Jesus.

In June, my wife and I were privileged to fly to Israel for a conference of over 2000 Anglican Church leaders from more than 50 countries. Not only was the conference extraordinarily encouraging, but we were also able to tour Israel, visiting many of the places spoken about in the Bible.

It was a truly memorable experience!

Seeing places spoken about in the Bible. Walking where Jesus walked. It was a brilliant confirmation of the Bible.

For example, the gospel of Luke starts with Luke telling us “Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word.

Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.”

Luke carefully investigated the evidence then wrote an orderly account of the events surrounding Jesus.

This truth fills the people who call Mulgoa Anglican Church home, with joy and confidence. We are not misled. We’re not believing fairy tales but are following Jesus, a real person in history who did wonderful things to bring each one of us back into friendship with God. You too can join us on Sundays to experience this life transforming truth for yourself.

Pastor’s Corner I recently read a story about a poor boy, who was selling goods from door to door, in order to pay for his studies. The boy was hungry, he decided that at the next house, he would ask for some food. The door was opened by a young woman, but the boy dared to ask only for a glass of water. Sensing he was hungry, the woman brought him a large glass of milk and he asked her, “How much do I owe you?” The woman said, “You don’t owe me anything, my mother taught me, never to accept pay for acts of kindness.” Not only did he feel better, but the boy’s faith in God was increased, that boy’s name was Howard Kelly.

Years later the woman was seriously ill, suffering from a rare disease, she was sent to a specialist in the city. The specialist was Doctor Howard Kelly, who recognised the woman immediately, as the woman who had shown him kindness. Howard was determined to help her recover from her illness.

The struggle to overcome her illness was long and very difficult. The woman was concerned about whether she would be able to afford to pay the cost of her treatment. Eventually, the bill arrived, when the woman looked at the bill, these words were written on it, “Paid in full with a glass of milk.” Imagine how different the world would be if we showed kindness to each other. I don’t mean just to those people we love, but even to strangers, like that poor boy.

God’s Word says “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not selfseeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).

My prayer is that each of us will show kindness, to the people we come across in this life’s journey.

Do You Have a Bush Fire Survival Plan?

The Department of Primary Industries has released its latest outlook, with a new model which has classified 15 per cent of the state as being in ‘intense drought’. The DPI has also noted that the July to September climate forecast is for an increased chance of drier than normal conditions, and warmer than average temperatures particularly along the coast.

Wallacia and the surrounding areas are in the intense drought category and is in desperate need of some good rainfall, otherwise the outlook for this coming bush fire season is looking bleak.

To illustrate just how dry it currently is - a grass fire in Campbell Street, Luddenham on Friday 13th of July spread quickly, threatening to impact a large LPG tank in the Caltex service station. A number of local brigades from the NSW Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW worked to protect the LPG tank and extinguish the grass fire. It took firefighters about 30 minutes to extinguish the fire, which burnt out 3.8ha. This type of fire would typically not spread this quickly during a normal winter.

Recent frost and windy conditions have only seen the local grass paddocks continue to dry out.

With no significant rain forecast, along with warmer than average temperatures predicted from July to September, this will likely see the Fire Danger Rating also rise higher than normal for this time of the year. We are asking everyone, not to become complacent and to start to make sure that your home and family are prepared for what could be a bleak and early bush fire season. Words Matter “Where did we ever get the crazy idea that in order to make children do better, first we have to make them feel worse? Think of the last time you felt humiliated or treated unfairly. Did you feel like cooperating or doing better?” questions Jane Nelsen (Founder of Positive Discipline Program) .

Some people think that screaming at children, putting them down, and calling them names, toughens them up. It’s a tough world out there, and we just gotta make them tougher.

Phooey!

The research is very clear.

Treating kids poorly can lead to mental health problems.

Do you know that 1 in 4 of the young people in Australia will develop clinical depression? Yep, in this ‘lucky country’. I have worked with kids as young as 8 years of age who have had depression.

Mental illness is a road going to a whole lot of suffering and heartache. Not only for the young person, but his/her parents, friends, school, and community.

I see a lot of this ‘toughen them up’ approach on the sporting field. Parents and coaches screaming at kids, calling them ‘losers’ and ‘rubbish’.

Silly me, I thought kids wanted to play sport to be active, to socialise, and to build their self-esteem, not to be bullied and abused. Frequently, quite vulnerable children do a sport in the community to build their resilience.

Most sports have a code of ethics for administrators, coaches, and spectators, which have strict guidelines which emphasise that the game should be enjoyable, children should be treated fairly and respectfully, and the duty of care required.

Remaining silent about a sports coach who swears at and yells at and degrades your child is certainly the easy way out, but this is how adults get away with child abuse. Emotional and verbal abuse desensitises your child to abuse. Would you accept a teacher, neighbour, or pastor/youth leader screaming at your kid and putting him/her down? If the answer is ‘no’ then don’t accept it on the sports field.

Words matter. So does your child’s wellbeing. As the old saying goes “winning isn’t everything”.

A local basketball club has the right attitude. They prominently display a sign saying…

School Struggles Is your child having difficulty learning at school? Perhaps they try to avoid going or misbehave in class because they can’t do the work. When a child is struggling, it can impact the whole family. Firstly, please know you and your child are not alone.

Secondly, there are ways you can manage and improve the situation.

It is important to grasp an understanding of which areas your child is experiencing difficulty. Children struggle academically for numerous reasons, so it is imperative to pinpoint the exact cause as the road to take is dependent on the root cause. This process may be lengthy, but it is best to cover all bases. The first port of call is your child’s school and often a report card will give a good indication of the areas that need addressing.

Unfortunately, this information may give you the deficits but not explain the ‘why’. Attending the parent-teacher interviews and asking for more specific information will help guide your course of action.

Often, teachers will refer students to the school learning support team for individual programs and integrated assistance in the classroom. In some cases, schools may recommend you take your child to see a specialist. Do not worry if your child’s teacher suggests this, it is useful to partake in assessments and appointments to exclude specific behavioural disorders, learning disabilities or impairments that are the underlying reason for issues at school. It may be appropriate to visit with speech therapists, occupational therapists, paediatricians, tutors, psychologists, audiologists and/or optometrists – depending on the recommendation of the school or the areas that require further investigation.

This extensive list may seem overwhelming, but it is not intended as a mandatory list of what to do but rather a

recommendation of where to go to get further assistance. These services will often suggest ways you can support your child’s learning at home, ways the school can adjust learning to cater for your child’s individual needs and equip you with knowledge and tools to be an advocate for your child’s learning based on the information they obtain. With a significant understanding and appropriate strategies and services in place, your child has a greater chance of improvement and achieving his or her personal best. from. Pg 1

It’s a wonderful incentive!”

“For many people, the simple act of sitting at a table and eating food with your family can help bring some normality.

It’s a measure of doing well. You’re no longer in survival mode, it’s recovery. Helping provide these opportunities is important” ended Paula.

Ingredients 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 800g gravy beef, trimmed, cut into 4cm pieces 4 eschalots, peeled, halved 2 carrots, thickly sliced 2 parsnips, thickly sliced 200g Swiss brown mushrooms, halved 1 teaspoon cracked black pepper 3 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme leaves, plus extra small sprigs to serve 1 tablespoon plain flour 330ml bottle pale ale 1 tablespoon tomato paste 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 1 cup beef stock Horseradish Dumplings 1 1/2 cups self-raising flour 2 tablespoons chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley, plus extra sprigs to serve 100g chilled butter, grated 1/3 cup pale ale 1/4 cup horseradish cream Preparation 1. Preheat oven to 180C/160C fan-forced.

2. Heat oil in a large ovenproof casserole dish over mediumhigh heat. Cook beef, in 2 batches, for 5 minutes or until browned all over. Transfer to a plate.

3. Add eschalot, carrot, parsnip and mushroom to pan. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until vegetables start to brown.

Add pepper and thyme. Cook, stirring, for 30 seconds or until fragrant. Add flour. Stir to coat. Add beer. Cook for 6 minutes or until reduced by half. Add tomato paste, sauce, stock and 11⁄2 cups water. Bring to a simmer. Season with salt.

4. Return beef to pan. Cover. Transfer to oven. Bake for 1 hour 15 minutes or until beef is just tender. Increase oven to 200°C/180°C fan-forced.

Wombats to Host Group 6 Finals Round

On Saturday the 11th of August and Sunday the 12th of August, the Mighty Warragamba Wombats J.R.L.F.C will be holding the electrifying Round 1 Final Round of the Group 6 Finals Series at Warragamba Oval.

This will be a fantastic time for the local community, as the Wombats get to host and support their own home-grown teams competing. With the support of the community, they hope to raise much-needed funds to complete the year on a high by also providing a well-deserved function and presentation day at the end of the long season.

The Warragamba Wombats have not held the junior semi-finals for many years and this is a major commitment by the Committee, players and parents of the club to fulfil the requirements that Group 6 outlines. It is a year of many firsts for the club, which included a record numbers of registrations. It promises to be an exciting weekend, with the whole community invited to come and watch some high energy football, enjoy a BBQ lunch and an opportunity to cheer on the Mighty Wombats and other local teams.

In 2019, they’ll be looking to introduce Girls League Tag at the Warragamba Wombats. This is an exciting game for girls aged 10 to 16 years of age. They have also updated their sponsorship packages and have some exciting offers and opportunities for local businesses that would like to partner with the Warragamba Wombats. Can NSAIDs Affect How Your Other Pain Killers Work?

Some people with higher levels of pain may be taking multiple pain medications. As seen in my last article, longer term intake of NSAIDs can lead to the development of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;toleranceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, which means the medication fails to reduce pain as well as it first did. Indeed, one animal experiment showed that the 7th dose of an NSAID is only 28% as effective as the first though blood concentrations of the drug remained the same.

Development of tolerance, may lead to a patient increasing the frequency and/or dose of their pain medication. It may also see the patient seeking help from their primary care physician for stronger opioid based medications. And occasionally patients may be prescribed both.

A recent patient with considerable lower back pain, detailed their current pain medication regimen as follows: 1.

Opioids: a. Oxycontin (Oxycodone) -20mg twice daily, b. Plexia (Tapendadol) SRMR - 50mg once daily, c. Endone (Oxycondone) - 5mg as required 2.

NSAIDs: a. Mobic (Meloxicam) - 15mg once daily 3.

Panadol osteo (paracetamol) - 665mg once daily 4.

Normison (Temazepam) - 10mg nightly, to allow sleep & deal with the anxiety of continual pain The patient had been on these medications for some months, yet was still in considerable pain. Patients taking longer term pain medications may want to know that: 1. NSAIDs enter the brain-stem from the blood & stop

transmission of pain from the body. Opioids do the same Tolerance to NSAIDs & opioids occurs rapidly Opioids and NSAIDs act on the same brain-stem pathway to block pain transmission 4. Initially NSAIDs & opioids, work together to kill pain more efficiently, however 5. NSAIDs & opioids when taken together for more than a few days, quickly create â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;cross-toleranceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. That is, the NSAID stops the opioid from working properly & vice versa, so neither drug works well 6. Increasing opioid dosage long-term may lead to a wellknown phenomenon called â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;opiod-induced hyperalgesiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

Here intake of the opioid pain killer may actually increase the original pain or may cause completely new pains unrelated to the original pain. Careful withdrawal from the drug may be required to reduce pain Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pretty clear - short term NSAIDs & other pain medication are fine and effective for pain, however efficacy of longer term use is questionable & effects are complex. Patients should talk to their physicians. The Tasmanian government deprescribing guide recommends intermittent use, or cessation of NSAID if symptoms are controlled & stable. They advocate maximal use of nonpharmacological treatments such as massage, physiotherapy, exercise & heat packs. Finding & treating the root cause of pain is probably the best idea. Planning Is Key To The Success Of Your Project There are many options and processes to consider once you’ve decided to build your new home. Both partners should have input into the design stage once you’ve taken your families wants and needs into consideration. Creating a design to meet your budget can be a stressful period.

Planning is the key to your project’s success and consulting with an Accredited Building Designer or Architect is the best place to start.

They can offer invaluable guidance in new home designs. If you are looking to upgrade, upsize or downsize your living arrangements, they can recommend options you might never have considered potentially saving you lots of money, prevent delays in council, speed-up project completion and decrease your stress level!

There is a process all new home planners will have to go through.

There are no shortcuts and once the home is built there is no cheap way to make changes later, so it is extremely important to get the new home planning right from the start.

Land Choice A very important part of your planning is the purchase of the land.

Make sure that there is no flood history, mine subsidence, land that has been filled in after draining a dam or garbage tip, another very important issue is the land prone to bushfires and at what level?

Let’s assume your land is fairly level, and if it is not, the construction of the residence floor would be an issue here. Either a Concrete floor if the site is fairly level, or a Timber Bearers & Joists Timber floor if the land is uneven or hilly.

Once you have purchased the land it would be a good idea to have a surveyor issue you with a Surveyor’s Certificate and Site drawing. If the land is very hilly then a surveyors drawing with contours is a must to show the correct ground levels.

At this stage let’s assume that the land is in a great area and good to build a new home on. (See next issue for a continuation of this topic).
