Joshua’s Motorsport Rise Silverdale local Joshua Car is fast proving to be a star on the rise in the motorsport world, with the talented driver recently signing on to race for Patrick Flynn Motorsports in the Formula 4 United States Championship Powered by Honda this year.

The 17-year-old is looking forward to a step up to the Formula 4 class, after a decorated race season last year that saw him win the Australian X30 Senior Kart Championship as well as the Las Vegas X30 SuperKarts! USA Super National Karting Championship against a field of 98 of the world’s best kart drivers.

“We’re very proud of Joshua and all that he has achieved in motorsport. He works very hard and plans on becoming a successful, professional racing driver” said Joshua’s Mum Tanya to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette.

Joshua began his race career as a 7-year-old, racing at Lithgow Kart Club. His move to race in the United States in the Formula 4 class is seen as a pathway to Formula 1. This will no doubt draw comparisons for Joshua to Australian Formula 1 racing driver Daniel Ricciardo.

Warragamba Dam Viewing Platform Reopens

Wollondilly Shire Council has welcomed the reopening of the 18th Street viewing platform at Warragamba Dam to the public.

The viewing platform was closed many years ago due to the impact of 13 tonnes of asbestos being dumped across the tenhectare Sydney Water property.

The site has undergone a complex remediation process and all safety and environmental checks have been completed.

Mayor Judith Hannan said, “Wollondilly Council appreciates the commitment and hard work of WaterNSW and Sydney Water to make the 18th Street viewing platform area safe and ready to reopen”.

“The viewing platform provides both tourism and economic benefits to Warragamba, providing the public with a greater connection to the Dam and bringing visitors into the township” she said.

“I would like to acknowledge the assistance given by Councillor Matt Gould and everyone who was involved in achieving this great outcome for Warragamba”.

Wallacia Public School Outdoor Movie Night a Big Success On Friday 9th March, Wallacia Public School held its annual Outdoor Movie Night.

The movie ‘The Secret Life of Pets’ started just as the dark set in. The sun had dried the much-needed rain that they received at lunchtime and picnic rugs, pillows and chairs were set. Families were fed thanks to Outback Steakhouse Penrith.

Movie goers had their cakes and popcorn ready to enjoy through the film. It was a fantastic start to the year for their school community. The funds raised will go towards providing Literacy and Mathematics programs for their children.

The night was made possible thanks to their Major Sponsors Samcon and Outback Steakhouse Penrith. Platinum Sponsors were Property Central Mulgoa and Wotso. Building News After a long and sometimes complicated process we are pleased to finally announce the sale of our St Paul’s Church building on Weir Road in Warragamba.

The Mulgoa Parish Council unanimously agreed that with the increased housing construction that is planned for this area, in particular at Silverdale, we needed to have a more spacious, modern building with the appropriate facilities that would allow us to serve the whole community.

While it will be sad to see services at St Paul’s come to an end, this is an exciting next step in the life of the Mulgoa Parish.

The plan is to use the finances from the St Paul’s sale, along with money that has been saved and generously donated by members of the Mulgoa Parish, to construct a new Church building at 2265 Silverdale Road.

Draft plans are currently being developed to construct a new Church building that will provide adequate space for ministry to children, youth and their families, along with a kitchen and space for casual meetings as well as our regular Sunday services.

What is behind this desire to build a new Church is the firm belief that there is nothing more important in life than for all people to know the transforming love of Jesus. It was Jesus Himself who said that He came into our world so that we would “have life, and have it to the full.” It is the new life that Jesus brings, this fresh start with God, that we believe will give people hope, peace and real direction in life.

In the meanwhile, as part of our partnership with Glenmore Park Anglican Church, we will be running at Glenmore Park an April Holidays Kids Club 9am – 12.30pm Wednesday 18th – Friday 20th April.

We have run these Kids Holiday Clubs each year for many years and the children have a fantastic time with lots of games, activities, music, skits, stories, friends and food! The Holiday Club will provide a safe and fun environment for your children with trained and experienced leaders. To book your spot see the details in the advertisement on this page.

Local Salon Helps Charity Orchid Belle Beauty’s (OBB)World’s Greatest Shave event was a huge success last month, with the local salon raising money for the Leukaemia Foundation for blood cancer.

The team were pleased to announce that they beat their goal of $500 for the two-hour event! Between selling raffle tickets, face shaped cookies, head shaves, cuts, colours and merchandise, the salon raised $881.30.

They would like to thank all the sponsors for donating their prizes and their clients for being so generous and donating money to the cause. The OBB Luddenham team of Jessica Gillett, Cheyenne Vella and Jammison Wallace worked hard all day.

OBB would like to raise a special mention to Mitch Burgess, who so far has raised over $646 as he progresses through his own journey with cancer and shaved his head on the day.

NSW Government Secures Historic Fernhill for Open Space The NSW Government has entered into a contract to purchase the central precinct of the historic Fernhill Estate at Mulgoa to enhance quality green open space for the people of Western Sydney to enjoy for future generations.

Minister for Western Sydney and Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres said the purchase of the 385-hectare site for community green space is a huge coup for Western Sydney.

“The ability to combine heritage, regional open space and a gateway to the Blue Mountains National Park creates a strong tourism opportunity that will be boosted by the development of Western Sydney Airport” Mr Ayres said.

“Fernhill holds a special place in the heart of the Western Sydney community, and now it will be owned by all of NSW”.

Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies, said bringing this historic estate into public hands has delivered a massive win for her community.

“Fernhill Estate homestead is a colonial treasure built in 1842 surrounded by Cumberland Plain Woodland, which will provide a haven for threatened species and create a green gateway to the world heritage listed Blue Mountains National Park” Mrs Davies said.

“The jewel in Mulgoa’s crown, bringing it into public ownership will enable its location and uniqueness to be enjoyed by the whole community and generation to come”.

Minister for Planning and Housing, Anthony Roberts said Fernhill located next to Mulgoa Village, comprises the heritage-listed homestead, another home and outbuildings, gardens, lakes, paddocks, equine facilities and a 2km horse race track.

“The Government jumped on this unique opportunity to buy this significant property to ensure the people of Western Sydney have quality green open space to enjoy for future generations as our city grows” Mr Roberts said.

The Government acquired the property from Angas Securities for $27.25 million. Funding Boost for Wallacia Volunteer Firefighters

Minister for Emergency Services Troy Grant and Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies MP recently visited the Wallacia Rural Fire Brigade to meet volunteers and announce funding for new station equipment.

Mr Grant said the $8,000 funding injection would enable the purchase and installation of lockers in the Wallacia station, enabling the safe storage of vital firefighting equipment.

“The NSW Government remains committed to ensuring our hard-working firefighters have the resources they need to keep their communities safe, whether that be water bombing aircraft providing support in the sky to lockers that keep equipment organized and easily accessible” Mr Grant said.

“I want to thank each and every one of the volunteer firefighters who have worked tirelessly during this bush fire season to protect the Wallacia community and beyond, because without their professionalism and skill, the Cumberland Zone would not be as safe as it is today”.

Mrs Davies said she was thrilled that the Minister was able to meet with local NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) members and hear firsthand about the important work undertaken in the community.

“Our local volunteers not only respond to a wide variety of incidents, including bush and grass fires and motor vehicle accidents, but they also devote their time to ensuring residents are well informed, have bush fire survival plans and are aware of local potential threats” Mrs Davies said.

“I am proud that our area and this Brigade continues to be supported by the NSW Government, which has allocated more than $1.1 million to the NSW RFS Cumberland Zone for firefighting trucks and a station this financial year”.

The NSW RFS Cumberland Zone includes the Blacktown, Fairfield and Penrith Local Government Areas and is one of the busiest within Region East.

In 2017/18, the NSW Government is investing an additional $7 million in more than 20 infrastructure projects across Region East, including the installation of solar panels on 20 stations.

Charlotte - Our Local Reining Champion 13-year-old Charlotte Callinan from Mulgoa has been crowned a State Champion in the sport of reining. She won her first buckle last month at the 2018 Victorian Reining Horse Association (VRHA) State Show in the Youth 13 and Under Class with her 13-year-old Australian Quarter Horse called OP Hesa Start Whiz, also known as Opie.

Charlotte and Opie train with Reining Industry professional Greg Peters from Serendipity Reiners in Ourimbah. She only turned her attention to the western discipline of reining four short years ago, at the age of 9, after starting general English riding when she was 6.

“Winning a youth class was on her goals list for 2018, so to achieve that at a State Show and early in the show year was especially exciting for Opie and Charlotte. They had run a personal best score at a club show leading into the Victorian State Championships, so they have been getting along really well” explained Charlotte’s Mum, Karen.

“This win was extra special because she was wearing Shelley Peters’ (Greg Peters’ Daughter) lucky shirt. The same shirt Shelley wore to win her first State Buckle on her legendary and greatly missed reining horse ‘Tell Me a Story’ about 10 years ago” continued Karen.

Charlotte enjoys the horses most in reining, especially when they run flat out and then come back to a slow lope and the sliding stops and spins. She also enjoys the thrill of the competition and getting to see all her friends and their horses at the shows.

This year, Opie and Charlotte will be competing at the Queensland and New South Wales State Championships as well as Nationals, where they hope to do their best and have fun. “She is looking forward to picking a shirt for her Coach to wear at an upcoming show.

Setting Limits And Boundaries I’m seeing a lot of stroppy three-year-olds in my work at the moment.

Families are streaming in through the door with stroppy three-year-old in tow. Too many young children are ruling the roost! It’s the same story - aggression and anger from the child.

This is what I have learnt in over 20 years of working with families – when a child is aggressive it usually means that there are not enough limits and boundaries, and/or they are applied inconsistently. Kids want to feel safe. Limits and boundaries provide safety. When a child is angry and aggressive, they are asking you to set a limit on that behaviour – their behaviour is saying ‘you are the parent, I am the child and I need help’.

Parents don’t know what to do. They frequently don’t have a parenting plan for how to deal with behaviour. So they try many different things. They are inconsistent in their management of behaviour, their approach to the child, and between partners where there are two parents in the home.

Parents don’t want to smack their kids and that’s good. What do you teach your kids when you smack them? In order to resolve conflict, I have to hit to get what I want. That’s not the sort of kid I want at my place, no thanks.

So, the only other tool left in the tool kit is yelling. And that’s ineffective because kids tune you out, and they just learn to yell to try and get what they want.

The thing about setting limits and boundaries is that you don’t have to be mean. As Jane Nelson said “Where did we ever get the crazy idea that in order to make children do better, first we have to make them feel worse? Think of the last time you felt humiliated or treated unfairly. Did you feel like cooperating or doing better?”

Setting limits and boundaries is about being calm, consistent, immediate, and decisive. We choose consequences that are related to the mistaken behaviour and apply them consistently, immediately and decisively. We tell the child what to do (rather than what not to do). When they are making poor choices, we tell them what they are doing wrong and what to do instead.

When we give instructions, we get close, say their name, and touch them. We pay lots and lots of attention to when they are doing behaviours that we like because it encourages them to do more of that. And as I said last month, stop talking so much.

I can’t tell you which parts were the funniest because the whole movie was hilarious! I especially liked the first time that Principal Krupp turned into Captain Underpants.

I liked the movie so much that I’m reading the books now. I have the first four epic novels.

Positive Partnerships in Education It is often said that a child’s education starts at home, so why is it when our children go to school that we often feel we have relinquished all rights to input into their learning?

A positive and collaborative home-school relationship is pivotal in creating a supportive environment which encourages learning.

Over the years society has become more complicated and these relationships have all too often degenerated. Unfortunately, in many communities, educators and parents just do not seem to have enough time to get to know one another and establish relationships on behalf of the children. Sometimes parents feel discouraged from visiting classrooms and teachers rarely consult with families unless a child is in trouble. The result of this situation is a clear division of home and school with misunderstanding, uncertainty and a lack of mutual respect. This can ultimately lead to a vicious cycle of teachers blaming the parents and parents blaming the teachers which, of course, is a worst-case scenario but it highlights the idea that when parents and teachers are active partners in a child’s education there is more chance of success.

So how do we produce a strong home-school connection that will set the stage for a child who will grow up with a love for learning? The resounding answer is clear and authentic communication. The problem, however, is that it needs to occur from both ends to be most effective. Families need to be interested, invested, available and realistic. They need to ensure they speak positively about the school, show how they value education and be willing to accept suggestions and praise. Teachers need to be approachable, open-minded, considerate and available. They must ensure they take the time to get to know the students and share their observations and understanding with families whilst showing respect and involving families in the child’s learning process. Zucchini Pancakes With Bacon & Avocado

ingredients 150g (1 cup) self-raising flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1 egg 310ml (1 1/2 cups) buttermilk 1 (about 150g) zucchini, coarsely grated Extra Virgin Olive oil spray 3 rindless bacon rashers, excess fat trimmed 250g punnet cherry tomatoes, quartered 1 small avocado, halved, stone removed, peeled, sliced 1 cup fresh basil leaves 1/2 small red onion, cut into thin wedges 1 garlic clove, crushed 2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar preparation 1. Combine the flour and baking powder in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Make a well in the centre. Whisk in the egg and buttermilk until just combined. Add the zucchini and stir to combine.

2. Heat a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Spray with oil. Spoon one-quarter of the zucchini mixture into the pan. Tilt the pan to form a 13cm-diameter pancake. Reduce heat to medium-low. Cook for 3-4 minutes or until bubbles appear on the surface. Turn and cook for 3-4 minutes or until golden and cooked through. Transfer to a plate and cover with foil to keep warm. Repeat with the remaining zucchini mixture, reheating the pan between batches.

3. Meanwhile, heat a small non-stick frying pan over mediumhigh heat. Cook the bacon for 3-4 minutes each side or until crisp. Tear into large pieces. Combine the tomato, avocado, basil, onion, garlic and vinegar in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Serve the salad and bacon with the pancakes.

Firearms Stolen During Break-In Luddenham An investigation has commenced following the theft firearms during a break-in at Luddenham last month.

About 11.30pm (Friday 23 March 2018), an 85-year-old woman was at her home address on Campbell Street when she was woken by a noise.

She got up to investigate and saw a man inside her home; he immediately ran from the premises without incident.

Police were called and a check of the premises revealed two registered firearms had been stolen from a gun safe.

Officers from Nepean Police Area Command are investigating the break-in and would like to speak with anyone who may have information that can assist.

Loaded Firearm Seized, Charges Laid After Wallacia Pursuit And Crash A loaded pistol has been seized and a man has been charged after a crash at Wallacia in western Sydney.

About 6.30pm (Wednesday 21 March 2018), police from the North West Metropolitan Highway Patrol stopped a vehicle on Park Road, Wallacia.

As police were conducting inquiries about the driver’s identity, it will be alleged the driver used capsicum spray on one of the officers.

The man drove away and a pursuit began. The man’s car crashed into a pole on Park, Road Wallacia, throwing both him and his dog from the vehicle.

A search of the vehicle found a loaded pistol along with

capsicum spray and a knife.

The 24–year-old man was treated on site by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Westmead Hospital for further treatment to suspected spinal injuries.

The officer received first aid at the scene and did not require further medical treatment The 24–year-old has been charged in relation to two outstanding arrest warrants, possess unauthorised firearm, possession of prohibited weapon, assault police, fraud and police pursuit drive manner dangerous (better known as Skye’s Law).

He was refused bail and the 24-year-old remains under guard in hospital [at time of print].

Inflammation – Many People Have It But What Is It? Many patients who visit the clinic have inflammation & therefore pain. Often, they’re taking a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) to manage symptoms. Examples include: • ibuprofen - Nurofen, Advil and Bugesic. • diclofenac –Voltaren, Dinac and Fenac. • naproxen –Naprosyn, Naprogesic, Aleve. • celecoxib – Celebrex.

Using these drugs to alleviate inflammatory pain short term (a few days) is appropriate. For long term pain relief however, these drugs seem to be ineffective (which may be why patients are seeking help). Indeed, long term intake may produce negative effects.

First, let’s look at what inflammation is & how it causes pain.

Inflammation is a beautifully intricate protective mechanism, designed as the body’s response to tissue damage from physical / chemical trauma, or infection. It is a process with distinct stages.

At the microscopic level the first phase looks something like this: 1. Cells & tissues are damaged by something.

2. Damaged cells raise the alarm. They do this by releasing chemicals that tell surrounding cells that damage has occurred.

3. Surrounding normal & immune cells then release additional chemicals which: a. bring in immune cells from the blood stream and lymphatic vessels and b. stimulate bone marrow to make & release additional immune cells 4. All these immune cells hone in on the area of damage 5. There they release their own chemicals of alarm to really raise the stakes.

All these chemicals create a fever pitch of activity Immune cells release huge amounts of peroxide, and free radicals to kill any bugs, 8. Still other cells are activated clean dead & dying bugs, body-cells, and bits of tissue Some (but by no means all) of the chemical mediators released during this process include: a. Bradykinin b. Histamine c. Cytokines (protein hormones produced by tissues & immune system – eg Interleukin 1β & TNFa, substance P-for pain, etc) d. Bacterial fragments called endotoxins e. Oxygen free radicals f. Leukotrienes & Prostaglandins (fish-oil based hormones) At a macroscopic level it looks like this: • blood vessels widen & much warm, red blood flows to the damaged area • blood vessel become leaky and fluid flows from blood vessels into tissues • sensitivity of pain receptors greatly increases This produces the 4 ‘Cardinal Signs’ of inflammation: 1.

Calor (heat) 2.

Rubor (redness) 3.

Tumor (swelling from fluid retention) 4.

Dolor (pain) The chief concern for most people of course is the pain. It might be pain in the back, the knee, shoulder, it could be your toes, or elsewhere. That’s why patients go to their doctor or chemist and ask for help, and they are often given an NSAID. Next month we will look at what NSAIDS do to alleviate pain.

Chocolate Dangers at Easter Time We all know Easter is a fun time spent with family and chocolate... lots and lots of delicious chocolate! Easter is a great time for the human members of the family, but the infamous Easter egg hunt can end in tragedy for our four legged friends. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which when ingested by a dog or cat, causes vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity, increased heart rate, restlessness, muscle twitching, increased urination, excessive panting and if left untreated can be rapidly fatal.

If your dog does accidentally eat some chocolate it is vitally important that they are seen within 30 minutes to an hour by your local Veterinarian. The Veterinarian will give an injection to make your pet vomit, which removes most of the toxins from the body. Sometimes, your pet will be hospitalised, where intravenous fluids may be used, an enema or stomach pump

may be required, and we may also need to use muscle relaxants and activated charcoal. â&#x20AC;˘ Hide your Easter eggs in areas which cannot be accessed by your pet. â&#x20AC;˘ Ensure small children do not give your pet any chocolate. â&#x20AC;˘ Ensure all chocolate is kept out of reach from your pets.

The 4th of March was a major milestone for the local area with the signing of the Western Sydney City Deal. Eight local Councils, State and Federal Leaders putting Western Sydney and its people first. The Western Sydney City Deal is a new and bold approach to managing cities and economies; unifying three levels of government to deliver smart and responsible growth for Western Sydney. The City Deal includes a centre piece commitment to deliver the first stage of Western Sydney Rail, a North-South Rail Link from St Marys to Luddenham and the Western Sydney Airport then on to the Aerotropolis at Bringelly.

Construction of stage one of the Sydney Science Park in Luddenham has been given the green light by the Sydney West Planning Panel after a unanimous decision in favour of the project at a recent determination meeting. Stage one includes the $64 million development of the seven-storey Baiada Building, providing opportunities for specialised research and development, employment and education at Luddenham. Once completed, Sydney Science Park will provide around 12,000 high quality jobs, right here in Luddenham, along with quality residential, educational and retail offerings.

The first â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Cars Under the Starsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; was held at the Showground on March 10 with just under 400 cars that were over 30 years old turning up for inspection, as well as the food trucks and lots of spectators. This will be held every month on the second Saturday at the Showground.

More than 70 local land holders attended a meeting in the Luddenham Progress Hall on March 12 to talk about zoning of the land west of the Northern Road. It was great to see so many local residents all working together and letting the Government know of their concerns.

March 13 saw the opening of Luddenham Raceways Main Circuit, Sydneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s brand new race track will be the home of a highly successful Performance Driving Program .

Greater Sydney Region Plan was released on the 18th ,this plan, along with Transport for NSWâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Future Transport 2056 and Infrastructure NSWâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s State Infrastructure Strategy 2018-38 will bring to life the vision of Greater Sydney with three metropolisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; the Eastern Harbour City, Central River City and Western Parkland City that Luddenham is in the middle of.
