Lendlease and the Touched by Olivia Foundation officially opened Livvi’s Place at Jordan Springs last month, marking the first inclusive play space to be built by Lendlease.

Designed in consultation with local children, people with disabilities and their families and carers, local schools and academics, Livvi’s Place is an inclusive play space that will enable children of all ages and abilities to play side-by-side using the same equipment.

The state-of-the-art play space boasts several interactive spaces including a large water play area with 6 water jets, a sandpit, trampolines, swings, a range of play equipment, a performance stage and picnic areas.

The opening of Livvi’s Place was celebrated with a grand opening event featuring market stalls, food, games and performances from children’s entertainer and Touched by Olivia Foundation ambassador, Jay Laga’aia.

New Jordan Springs Sports Fields Looking For Tenants Until 18 November 2016, Council is calling for expressions of interest from not-for-profit sporting clubs and associations wanting to establish a presence in Jordan Springs from winter 2017.

The new Village and Northern Road Ovals provide flexible recreation spaces that will support a range of sport and recreation activities and encourage participation by the local community.

Penrith Mayor John Thain said the new multipurpose fields have the capacity to cater for a range of sports. “Penrith is a city that loves its sport, so I know the new facilities will be well used,� Cr Thain said. “No one sport or organisation

has been identified to use these fields, and Council wants to make sure as many people as possible benefit from them.�

Construction of the fields is now complete and once the turf has had a chance to become established, the fields will be ready for organised sports for the winter season in 2017.

The Northern Road Oval (2.5ha) includes a modified field, all abilities playground, hard court, picnic and BBQ facilities, toilet facilities and parking for 40 cars. The Village Oval (5.5ha) includes two sporting pitches and /or one oval, netball and basketball court, playground, and full amenities building and parking for 80 cars.

Sporting clubs and associations wishing to submit an expression of interest need to use the application form and read the information provided on Council’s website.

A continuing theological function of the Church is to respond to the question found in Saint Mark’s Gospel that was posed by Jesus the Christ: “Who do you say that I am”. In attempting to give answer it appeals to the faith which has come down through history [the great Gospel Tradition] that is the distinctive feature of faith in Jesus the Christ known and professed as the eternal Son of the living and loving God, for us men and for our salvation born of a woman, unjustly put to death, raised from death in the Spirit of God’s holiness and we wait in watching and prayer against the day when he will come in glory to do final justice to the living and the dead.

Today we are finding that such a unified Trinitarian vision for humanity and the universe can be hard to sustain. Basically because of three reasons: [a] God and his creation is not a wonder for worship and wisdom. As the Psalmist many years ago sang ‘only a fool can say there is no God’ and as Dietrich Bonhoeffer argued “I should like to speak of God not on the borders of life but at its centre….

God is the ‘beyond’ in the midst of our life”. Many today conceive God as a remote deity that somehow created the universe [b] Many today accept ethics as a satisfactory substitute of faith. It is faith however that relates our ethics to the reality of honesty: being honest to God and to ourselves for our thoughts and actions. [c] Many people today sadly value godly ‘experience’ more than God. Thus we trade worship for self-consciousness and

place Jesus as an admirable example of that self-consciousness.

The Trinitarian vision thus remains a continuing function of the Church and a life disciplined within this vision continually challenges the individual and society to answer the question put by Jesus the Christ: “who do you say I am” Rev John Hebblewhite

Continuing Our Series on Parent Traps…

The beliefs and expectations held by parents can make their job more difficult. Some of these beliefs are: It’s just a phase, all kids do it, don’t they?

Certainly some child behaviour is related to their age.

For example, young children under the age of 4 years have difficulty sharing because they are egocentric and they haven’t developed ‘theory of mind’ (the realisation that other people have thoughts and feelings of their own).

This doesn’t mean that you don’t address the behaviour by communicating boundaries and limits. It is still our job as parents to deal with mistaken behaviour immediately and to consistently apply consequences. The consequences do not need to be harsh (yelling, smacking, extensive time-outs), but they do need to be consistent.

If you think the behaviour is just a phase, it may stop you from dealing with it at the time, and it can become more severe.

They are doing it deliberately to annoy me.

Most children do not behave in certain ways to deliberately upset you. Most of the time, they do things because they don’t remember previous lessons, or they are lost in their own world.

Dr Becky Bailey, a clinical psychologist in the USA, says that you usually have to repeat an instruction about 2000 times before the child integrates it into his/her routine.

Thinking that a child is behaving deliberately will make you more angry, and there is a chance that you will overreact with harsh discipline, and shame your child (focus on ‘who’ he is, rather than ‘what’ he did).

Children need support and encouragement for a long time before they learn how to be a fully functioning human. They do not develop their adult brain until the age of 25 years.

Thinking that our children are being wilful, manipulative, or wicked in a given situation does not allow you to have a clear and calm mind, or enable you to think about how you can contribute to your child’s success and teach him/her new skills and behaviours.

“Livvi’s Place is the first inclusive play space to be built by Lendlease and has soft rubber flooring spaces, a rock climbing area, a water play area, access to public toilets and more to ensure that children of all abilities can play together,” said Mr Ilias.

Touched by Olivia Foundation Founder, Justine Perkins said, “Olivia’s legacy is to help children become healthier and happier.

“The opening of Livvi’s Place and our partnership with Lendlease and the Penrith City Council will ensure that children in Jordan Springs and surrounding suburbs have plenty of opportunities to play outdoors with other children and enjoy the equipment no matter their age or ability,” Justine said.

Penrith Mayor John Thain said it’s always exciting to launch a new playground in Penrith, but the opening of Livvi’s Place in Jordan Springs was much more than a new place to play.

“Livvi’s Place is an inclusive playground for our city and one that I’m personally really excited about,” said Cr Thain.

“This is a great example of government, not-for-profit organisations and developers working together for the benefit of, and with, the community.”

Livvi’s Place spans over 2350 square metres and includes more than 3781 trees, shrubs, flowers and plants, 15 personalised pavers and 13 hand painted tiles. There are spaces for kids to spin, climb, slide, swing, jump, dig, run, sing and dance, eat and wheel with nearly all facilities at Livvi’s Place being wheelchair friendly.

Our upcoming orientation program will go one step further and the prospective Kindies will go into their classrooms for next year and do activities with the teachers and also meet their buddies. While they are in the classrooms, parents will also have an opportunity for orientation to the school.

Happy 150th Birthday Llandilo Public School!

It may have been 150 years in the making, but Llandilo Public School’s 150 Year Celebrations certainly lived up to that, with the local community coming together marking the important milestone for the school.

Fantastic weather greeted the large crowd to a massive day of festivities. The day began with the Llandilo Public School Show ‘n’ Shine Car Show at 8:30am. Cars from far and wide entered the competition with the Top 10 all receiving trophies as prizes.

From 10am the celebrations continued with a dinosaur display, reptiles, pony rides, petting zoo, working dogs, BBQ, markets, second hand book stall and everyone’s favourite, rides! For $30, there were unlimited rides on the UFO Lazer Encounter, Cliffhanger, Junior Sports, Olympic Obstacle Course, Atomic Drop Slide and Windjammer.

For the reptile lovers, ‘Humungousaur’ the Salt Water Crocodile and ‘Rumplesnakeskin’ the Carpet Python were part of the show, where people could get a selfie with the creatures for a gold coin donation. Golden Ridge Animal Farm provided the petting zoo,

which was very popular with the children on the day.

The Llandilo Public School BBQ was kept busy with the sausage sizzle whilst the school canteen provided ice creams, which were perfect for the warmer weather. There were market stalls galore with everything from food, arts and crafts to gifts.

To mark the special occasion, a Museum was opened for the day at the school, showcasing various memorabilia and photos from the school’s rich 150-year-old history. Money raised from entry to the museum will assist the up keep and maintenance of the school’s heritage building.

“It was a great day for the community. Everybody from the local area came together to join us for the celebrations. We had people from all generations, both young and old. It was the biggest event we have had in Llandilo in ten years. We even had traffic jams which never happen in Llandilo! We would like to thank everyone that came to celebrate with us, including the team and businesses who all supported us” said Carmen Sultana, Llandilo Public School P & C President and Event Organiser.

Lendlease Inspires Small Business

Last month, Lendlease and the Western Sydney Business Centre teamed up to host a networking event, providing the regions small businesses with valuable insight into how to achieve sales success.

The networking event was held in Western Sydney University’s incubator space, Launch Pad, which provides small business owners with an innovative co-working space and connects them with business mentors.

The networking event was a great opportunity for local and small businesses to get together and talk about the challenges they face in the industry and how businesses can grow. Attendees also received insider tips on the sales industry from Vanessa Van Wyk of Binarix Corporation, who shared her knowledge on why people buy and tips for closing the sale.

Matthew Brennan of Vivid Financial Services was one of many Jordan Springs business owners who attended the event, saying, “We found the event very enlightening and easy to get

involved in, each presenter was well versed in their field.

“We are already implementing some of the strategies we learnt at the event and are looking forward to attending the next session.”

Help Laura’s Trek To NT For White Ribbon

Mental Health Awareness Day

Local Laura Watson has been invited to an amazing once in a lifetime opportunity for a wonderful cause that is close to her heart, which is, creating awareness of domestic violence in Aboriginal communities.

“I have been a White Ribbon advocate for a while now and I love to give my free time to campaign and spread awareness and help so many women in need against this horrible crime that is domestic violence. My main focus is the children and if trekking through the desert for 10 days is what will help then I’m there! Women in the Northern Territory in Central Australia need our help but I also need your help in getting me there” said Laura.

White Ribbon Australia have asked if Laura would like to fly with their team to the Northern Territory in Central Australia in September 2017 to trek over 10 days and camp in many towns to help the woman in Aboriginal communities.

Unfortunately, Laura does not have the funds to achieve this, so she is appealing to the greater community to help her fundraise to make this happen.

Laura has got 12 months to raise as much money as she can so that hopefully she can fly to the Northern Territory and help women and children affected by domestic violence. “So please if you can, support a vision of a nation that respects women. I hope that in the future, every woman lives in safety, free from all forms of abuse. These vital funds are to strengthen education for young people to prevent violence against women” explained Laura.

A Mental Health month event to promote awareness about this sometimes-debilitating condition was recently held in Jordan Springs.

Mental Health Community Day was held at Lakeside Parade with blue skies, live music, children’s activities and a BBQ setting the scene for a relaxed engagement beside the picturesque lake.

There were 14 local service providers gathered at the event with an assortment of information and advice for the community.

The successful event was organized

Santa Hat Brownies Easy • Time 45 min • Serves 16

Ingredients • 1 1/2 cups Coles Brand Cooking Chocolate Dark Buttons • 1 Coles Create & Bake Chocolate Brownie Mix • 3 Eggs • 2 tbsp (40ml) Water • 200 g Butter, melted

• 19 cm Square Cake Tin • 1 pack Coles Create & Bake Vanilla Icing Mix • 125 g Coles Brand Cream Cheese • 40 g Butter, softened • 16 Strawberries, hulled

Method 1. Preheat oven to 180°c (160°c fan forced). Lightly grease & line the base & sides of a 25cm square cake tin.

2. In a large bowl, combine 1 cup of the chocolate buttons, brownie mix, eggs, water & butter. Mix with a large spoon until well combined.

3. Spoon mixture into prepared pan, smooth top. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.

Allow to cool in the tin for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Use a 4cm round cutter to cut 16 rounds.

4. In a small heatproof bowl, add the remaining ½ cup of dark chocolate buttons, & set over a saucepan half-filled with simmering water. Stir with a metal spoon until melted, then drop a little chocolate on the cut-side of each strawberry & place on top of the brownie.

5. To prepare the icing, combine the icing mix, cream cheese & butter. Using an electric mixer, mix on low speed for 30 seconds or until combined, increasing speed to high & mixing for a further 1 to 2 minutes until light & creamy.

6. Transfer icing to a piping bag fitted with a small round nozzle, pipe icing around the base of the strawberries & a small dot on top to create the santa hat trimming & pom poms. http://recipes.coles.com.au/recipes/3332/santa-hat-brownies/

Let’s Make It As Safe As We Can

It’s been a long cold winter, but with daylight savings finally here and longer, warmer days, it’s finally feeling like summer is just around the corner – and with it comes both good and bad news……

The good news first…. this year’s National Drowning Report 2016 released by Royal Life Saving in September announced a decrease in the number of children aged 0-4 drowning between July 2015 and June 2016, and a decrease in the number of drowning deaths at Inland Waterways – very encouraging statistics!

The bad news is, there is still much work to be done, as 280 people still lost their lives during the reported period in Australia, including 9 children under the age of 14 drowning in NSW alone, with most in backyard swimming pools. NSW recorded the highest number of drownings than any other state with 96 deaths, and males accounted for 91% of all drowning deaths in NSW. 27% of all people who drowned were swimming or playing in the water just prior to drowning. Drowning occurred all year round but more often in our leisure time – summer and weekends – peaking in January during warmer weather, and with more deaths recorded on Sundays than any other day of the week. Almost half (45%) of all drowning deaths occurred in the afternoon between midday and 6pm.

Sadly, it is not just our littlest children at risk, with eleven children aged 5-14 years drowning this past year. Although this was a decrease against the 10 year average, these tragic events reinforce the importance of all children learning swimming and water safety skills. Each drowning death is a personal story, impacting on families, friends and communities. Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith recently joined NSW Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, David Elliott to launch the 2017 Premier’s Anzac Memorial Scholarship.

Stuart Ayres is encouraging schools to participate to give students the opportunity to represent their community on the tour.

“This year, Mitchell Price from Cranebrook High school was a recipient of the scholarship and it was great to hear of the experience he had,” said Stuart Ayres.

The scholarship is available to Year 10 and 11 students with a keen interest in history. Mr Elliott said he hopes schools will take up the opportunity to be a part of the program.

The 12-day tour will have the participants join in commemorations of the Third Battle of Ypres in Flanders marking 100 years since the British offensive in which Australia lost 38,000 men. They will also take in other significant Australian battlefields on the Western Front in Belgium and France including Villiers Bretonneux, Pozieres and Fromelles.

“Remembering Australia’s service men and women is all the more important as we continue to commemorate the Centenary of Anzac,” Stuart Ayres said.

“For students this tour is a unique opportunity, one that offers scholars insight into Australia’s involvement in the First World War and the birth of the Anzac legend.”

Government, Catholic and independent schools that submit an expression of interest will go into a ballot that will be drawn on 21 November.

The 20 schools selected will then nominate one student each to take part in the 2017 tour.

Displaying Photos of Loved Ones Who Have Died I never thought photos of my children who have died would create such controversy.

Recently we had friends over who didn’t know our family’s early stories. I have photos all down my hallway that tells our family history.

They were interested in all the photos, Daniel asked, “Why do you have so many photos of children?” I explained that they were our children. He was quite interested but Erin sat quietly in the lounge room drinking her tea and didn’t join the discussion.

The next day Daniel told me that Erin thought it disgusting that I had photos of dead children on the wall to talk about them. This perplexed me as she isn’t indigenous and doesn’t have any religious beliefs.

I explained to Erin why it was important for others and me.

1. They are still family members and will always live on through memories and the impact they had in our lives.

2. To remember them. Our memory of them gets older and our brain won’t remember them as vividly.

3. Some people like having photos to connect to their loved one. It reminds you of their smell, their laugh, their voice and places you’ve been with them.

4. To connect future generations to their ancestors. It’s nice seeing who you look like.

5. To tell stories and carry the history of the family down the generations.

Photos can make you sad, laugh, cry and smile. Memories can

flood back in a split second and a whole story emerges.

You don’t have to display photos of your loved ones but don’t lock them away just because someone is uncomfortable with your decision to show them.
