As we enter October, and the start of yet another school term it’s clear the year is flying by!

Dare I remind you that Christmas is less than 100 days away? If you’re anything like me, you would agree that it only felt like yesterday when we were enjoying time with friends and family during the Festive season of 2013 and welcoming in 2014.

Local Shines On World Stage Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith congratulates Gina Field of Nepean Regional Security on winning a Bronze Stevie Award in the ManagementExecutive of the Year category in the 11th Annual International Business Awards (IBAs).

Stuart Ayres said Gina is a shining example of a woman determined to succeed and it is recognised in this outstanding achievement.

The 2014 IBAs saw over 3,500 nominations from over 60 nations and territories with organisations of all sizes and industries submitting entries for consideration.

Winners were determined through two months of preliminary judging and two weeks of final judging.

The Awards will be presented to the winners at a gala evening in Paris, France later this month. “Gina is a remarkable woman and this recognition on the world stage is well deserved,� added Stuart Ayres.

Christology is the technical term used for the study of the life of Jesus who became the centre of worship as being the Christ.

The Christ stems from ancient thought and relates the person in total to God. So when asked what is so important about Jesus and why is trust leading to faith placed in him as the Christ it is possible that the following reflections assist to confirm that importance.

Reflection one: Jesus was a Palestinian Jew who lived in Galilee. This was a far flung province within the Roman Empire.

It is interesting to note in the Scriptural record of his life and work that he stood apart from the religious practice in Judaism.

He played no part in the religious political establishment. He placed no stress on being a stern moralist nor a strict ascetic.

His life and work is better seen as being a critical catalyst in everyday life.

Reflection two: In comparing Jesus to say Moses, Buddha, Muhammad or even Confucius his teaching is direct: “I say to you”. As such it really has no parallel in religious teaching. Moses appealed to the Law, Buddha to monastic rules, Muhammad to world conquest while Confucius appealed to morality and ethics. Jesus was certain of who he was and in turn challenges people to answer the question “Who do you say I am” Reflection three: Jesus challenges response simply because

what he taught is not to be separated from his life- unconditional forgiveness, unconditional love and a total giving of himself in death.

Reflection four: In history miracles and unexplained events are common and as such those recorded about Jesus are not necessarily unique. What is ‘miraculous’ is that his life, death and resurrection has a vital significance. He was not a founder of a religion, although in history many Christians attempt this. He simply proclaimed and lived the reality of God. Reflection five: In the study of the life and work of Jesus the fact of his death and more importantly his resurrection and ascension, gives firm foundations for not only the individual, but society itself, nationally and internationally. As growth “in Christ’ progresses with the essential hope of death and resurrection that completes life in itself , it is the constant meditation and application in everyday life of what was revealed in his life and death that is the ongoing appeal.

Now these reflections in themselves are open to debate.

Indeed in no way do they exhaust avenues for understanding Jesus. But none the less they can be considered a base from which to work.

One difficulty is that often reflection begins from the individual’s own perspective or position on religion. This is overcome when reflection is based on what the life and death of Jesus teaches us. To ‘grow in Christ’ is the continual response.

Cumberland Rural Fire Service Receives NSW Government Grant NSW Minister for Police and Emergency Services Stuart Ayres MP and Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies yesterday officially presented Cumberland Zone Rural Fire Service (RFS) with a cheque for $20,000 to go towards the purchase of 41 new ground radios. Cumberland RFS has 16 Brigades and over 1000 fire fighters and support personnel covering the western Sydney region.

“The NSW Government has distributed Emergency Services Grants totalling $127,000 to recipients across the state, with Cumberland Zone receiving $20,000” said Minister Ayres “This funding reinforces the NSW Government’s commitment to supporting rural fire fighting volunteers” Tanya Davies said.

“We are very grateful for the State Government’s funding support. These radios will come in very handy in the upcoming fire prone summer season” said Superintendent Richard Petch of the Cumberland Zone RFS. ‘The NSW Government is committed to ensuring the RFS is well-equipped for the bushfire season,’ said Minister Ayres.

‘RFS volunteers in the Cumberland zone, and across NSW, perform invaluable work in protecting our homes and our families, and we endeavour to assist them in every way possible.’ said Minister Ayres.

‘These radios will enhance the efficiency of RFS operations in what is already proving to be a tough bushfire season.’ said Minister Ayres.

‘As we approach the summer season, I urge property owners to take action now to prepare.

From the Principal’s Desk...Llandilo Public School Life has been so busy at Llandilo Public School!

Over the past few weeks our students have been involved in sports carnivals, backyard rugby league, the Royce Simmons shield, swim school and the Blue Mountains Performing Arts Festival.

Let’s not forget our own school programs. No wonder everyone is ready for a holiday!

During week 6 our staff and students dressed up as their favourite book character to celebrate Book Week. The children looked wonderful in their costumes and it was lovely to see the pre-schoolers involved too. As always, there was great support from the parents and community members. What a fantastic event this turned out to be!

Recently our school introduced a `social skills program’, designed to provide a helping hand to some students in order to develop and maintain positive relationships. We are also in the process of setting up a gardening club, to assist in this area. The `vegie patch’ will complement our `crunch and sip’ program. Our aim is for students to learn how to work together and communicate in a respectful, positive manner, whilst developing additional knowledge and skills along the way.

The Penrith District Athletics Carnival finally took place in week 7 and many of our students did their personal best on the day, despite cold and blustery conditions. Five students namely Zoe Parnell, Isabella Pelle, Paige Manning, Jacinta Fabar and Kaylie Tibbey all competed in their respective events at the Regional Carnival. Well done to everyone involved.

During week 8 we celebrated Literacy and Numeracy Day, where all K-6 students worked together in groups and participated in a multitude of learning activities that centred around literacy and numeracy. I was amazed at the enthusiasm of the students who were collaborating, critically thinking and communicating with each other, as they solved problems and worked mathematically.

The teachers planned fun, educational lessons that ‘challenged the minds’. It was a great day for all concerned.

Our Pyjama Day was also held in week 8. Students were allowed to wear their pyjamas to school – just for fun – and no-one was late for school as they didn’t have to spend time getting dressed! The P & C provided cups of hot chocolate and the students certainly enjoyed their day ‘out of uniform’.

The whole school community have been working very hard raising funds to update the school’s technological resources. We have ordered a multitude of iPads and made arrangements for the Wi-Fi throughout the school to be updated. Simultaneously we will install up to date technological equipment in the hall. This is a very exciting time for our school and our students. Soon they will be utilising up to date technology that will enable them to function successfully in the 21st Century. Meet the Penrith Panthers at the Picnics Fernhill Estate is inviting the local community to celebrate the Penrith Panthers’ great 2014 season at its Picnic Race Day on Saturday 18th October.

Players Jamie Soward, Matt Moylan, and Kevin Kingston, along with Race Day Ambassador and Holden Cup coach, Trent Barrett, will be on hand to meet race goers and join in the excitement of the day.

Do you Have a Child who has Difficulty Calming Him or Herself?

One of my boys would get very angry at times and needed some support to calm himself. I was concerned that if he didn’t learn the skills to calm himself, he would think that anger was an appropriate means of expressing himself. I didn’t want him taking his anger into adolescence and beyond.

The following strategies are from the Second Step programme which I have taught in primary school.

In the programme, children are told that they should do some deep breathing in situations where they find they are having strong feelings, such as being overexcited, angry, or upset.

We tell kids that it’s ok to have strong feelings, but doing the first thing that comes into your head (like hitting or screaming at the other person) will not solve the problem.

When we have strong feelings it can be hard to think about what to do. Calming down helps us to think again. It’s easier to calm down if we try as soon as we start to have a strong feeling.

You can use ways to calm down in the classroom, at home, and in the playground. It also helps to get children to identify where they feel their anger (for example, tummy, head, hands).

Support the child to locate where he or she feels the feeling (anger, sadness, distress, overexcited, etc) in his or her body. The answers I have heard from kids range from the feet (to run), the fists (to get ready to fight), the heart, the tummy, and the head.

This one is for young children, up to 6 years of age.

Put your hand on your tummy to check out how you are feeling, and l. Say “calm down” to yourself, using a slow voice 2. Take three deep belly breaths 3. Count to 4 slowly Your tummy is right where your belly button is. Putting your hand there helps you check in with how you’re feeling. It also makes sure you do the right kind of breathing to help calm down. The wrong way to do belly breathing is to puff up your chest, tense your muscles, take a noisy gasp of air, and hold your breath. The right way to do belly breathing, is to take a breath that makes your tummy move out when you breathe in, and in when you breathe out. Breathe in slowly through your nose and out through your mouth. It should be so quiet that you can’t hear it.

It’s a good technique for parents to use as well! Many parents reported that their young children in the programme would coach them to do these things when they were showing signs of getting angry.

Next month I’ll give you the techniques for children older than 6 years of age.

Henry Fulton Public School ?

Henry Fulton Public School enjoys its strong ties with our families and community. This was very evident on Saturday the 23rd of August when the Henry Fulton P&C held their annual Bunnings BBQ. The day was a huge success.

A special thank you to our community whose generosity in donating items and helping out on the day meant for the first time, the P&C didn’t need to purchase anything for the day.

Our District Athletics were finally held after being washed out several times. We had many athletes make it through to regional level with our star runner Malakie making it through to the State Championships for the 100m.

Over the past two weeks our four dance troupes have been in action. This time they have been strutting their stuff at the Joan Sutherland Centre as part of The Nepean Blue Mountains Dance Festival. As always we were the highlight of the festival but then again I may just be a bit biased... Last week our children were thoroughly entertained by a performance of ‘Crossing The Blue Mountains’. The play went for almost an hour and it was greatly enjoyed by all.

We also held our school Walkathon which had the theme “My Favourite Book Character”. It proved to be a successful fun day for all. As you can see Henry Fulton Public School is a busy, active school that provides opportunity for all our students in many different areas.

7 Don’ts When Someone has Died 1. Don’t say things they say in the movies - Like; “Everything happens for a reason”; what possible reason could there be for a child dying? “He’s gone to a better place”, Better than in the arms of a loved one? “It was God’s will”, what god would take a person from their loved ones?

2. Don’t try to fix it, you can’t. Your friend needs to go through their own grief to be able to work out how they will live their lives now.

3. Don’t say, “If you need anything just call”. They don’t know what they need, they’re numb and in a state of shock. Look for what needs doing and help with that. It may be help with the ironing, dinner, and other everyday things.

4. Don’t say, “You’ll get over it with time” or “Time heals everything”.

They’re in a fragile state and don’t need to be forced to feel or do anything they don’t want to. Each person’s experience of grief is unique.

5. Don’t say, “I know how you feel”. You have experienced your grief, it isn’t the same feeling as your friend’s grief.

6. Don’t think you can hurt them any more than they are already, by saying their loved ones name. Speaking their name helps things feel real.

7. Don’t avoid your friend. They need you, even if you don’t say anything, just listen.

Remember everyone’s grief is unique. Your relationships may change through grief but in the end your ongoing support and friendship will be appreciated.

If you admire someone for making a difference to the Penrith community, then give them the recognition they deserve and nominate them for a 2015 Australia Day Award.

Witch’s Hat Cookies Medium • Time 40 min • Makes 12

Ingredients • 2/3 Cup Plain Flour • 1/4 Cup Firmly Packed Brown Sugar • 2 Tbsp Cocoa Powder • 60g Butter, Chopped • 1 Egg Yolk • 375g Packet Milk Chocolate Melts, Melted • 12 Mini Ice-Cream Cones • 1/3 Cup M&Ms Minis

Method 1. Process flour, sugar, cocoa and butter until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add egg yolk. Process until dough just comes together, adding 2 teaspoons of cold water if necessary. Turn pastry onto a lightly floured surface. Knead until just smooth. Shape into a disc. Cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.

2. Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced. Line 2 baking trays with baking paper. Roll out pastry between 2 sheets of baking paper until 5mm thick.

Using a 5.5cm cutter, cut 12 rounds from dough. Place rounds, 3cm apart, on prepared trays. Refrigerate for 10 minutes.

3. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until light golden. Cool on trays for 5 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

4. Line a tray with baking paper. Using a small pastry brush, spread a little melted chocolate onto the top of 1 biscuit. Working quickly, dip the outside of 1 cone into chocolate, turning to coat all over. Stick the cone onto the biscuit. Place onto prepared tray. Working quickly, decorate cone with M&Ms. Repeat with remaining biscuits, melted chocolate, ice-cream cones and M&Ms. Refrigerate for 20 minutes or until set. Tie ribbon around base of each hat. in June 2013. Lizzie is in the process of completing her Certificate II in Animal Science at TAFE, as well as her Higher School Certificate.

She enjoys everything about being a Kennel Hand, learning lots and getting a head start on some nurse duties, as she wishes to go on to study Veterinary Nursing at TAFE. Lizzie has had many animals during her life time, at the moment she has two cats (Moo Cow and Missy), and a Labrador cross (Sonny). “After a week of work experience, I never thought only a year later would I be working here at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, but I wouldn’t work anywhere else! Everyone here is always willing to help out and share their knowledge where ever possible.�

Lizzie was promoted to Trainee Veterinary Nurse in September 2014.

New Trainee Veterinary Nurse – Jemma As a lifelong animal lover, Veterinary Nursing was an obvious career choice for Jemma, who joined the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in September 2014. Having completed the Certificate II in Animal Studies in 2013, Jemma is currently completing her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing at Richmond TAFE. Growing up on acreage, Jemma was surrounded by many dogs and horses, and was involved in the local Pony Club.
