Penrith Welcomes New Flexi Ambulance Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith last month welcomed the addition of a new Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) general ambulance to Penrith Ambulance Station to support local paramedics and patients with special needs.

Stuart Ayres said the new MPV general ambulance has the capability to transport patients who weigh up to 300 kilograms.

“This is a first for Penrith. NSW Ambulance has trialled these vehicles to test their abilities and now we have seven new MPV general ambulances across the state with one here in Penrith,” Stuart Ayres said.

“The new MPV general ambulance is giving our local paramedics the equipment and technology to support them in their life-saving work.

“It is capable of transporting patients who weigh up to 300 kilograms but it can care for non-bariatric patients too.

“The new vehicle, which has a fit out value of $152,000, is a welcome addition to Penrith Ambulance Station and is equipped with mechanical aids in the lifting and management of patients to reduce health and safety risks. ...continued on Pg.15

Here we are at the pointy end of the year. For most, it’s a busy time of juggling numerous end of year events and commitments, all the while attempting to remain cool, calm and collected as the Festive Season approaches.

Penrith Progresses $410 Million Investment in Penrith is booming, with Council receiving applications for development worth a staggering $100 million per month, totalling $410 million in the past four months.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said the welcome investment shows there is a tangible interest in our City and an eagerness to invest. “The sheer weight of investment shows that Penrith is recognised as a significant area in the region and NSW, and the centre point of the exciting New West,� Councillor Fowler said. “Pleasingly the investment is spread around our City and in a number of industries including residential, business, leisure industries and retail. “This means local jobs, both in the building of the developments and in the longer term. “Almost 60 per cent of the investment is in big projects worth $5 million or more. “

The proposed investments are welcomed by Penrith Progression Project Director, Craig Butler. “This kind of investment not only brings jobs and infrastructure to the city,� said Mr Butler, “but improves liveability and brings a vibrancy that benefits the City and its people.� “These investors have done their research, and they know that they need to get involved in Penrith now, as the capital of the thriving New West.�.

Major development applications are for residential mixed use, large scale subdivisions, release areas and commercial developments, including Thornton apartments, subdivisions at Jordan Springs and Werrington, St Marys where the old bowling club was, the Glenmore Park Town Centre and the St Marys and Panthers Rugby League Clubs.

In November each year the Church celebrates All Saints Day. It has an interesting history in that around 200CE Saint Gregory, who lived in Pontus in what was known as Asia Minor observed a festival known as All Martyrs. Saint Chrysostom who died in 407CE also refers to this festival.

The Greek Orthodox Church observes the second Sunday after Pentecost [the granting of God’s Spirit to the early followers of Christ and considered to be the ‘birthday’ of the Church] as a festival of All Saints.

In Scripture the word saint is not used in relation to personal character [although today people will refer to someone being a ‘saint’] or to a special or class of Christian believers. Rather the word expresses belief in the total concept of the Church: both the living and the dead. Saint Paul in his writings developed the concept of the Church as being the ‘mystical body of the Son’.

The Anglican prayer book defines it as ‘the blessed company of faithful people’. It is in baptism when the person ‘turns to God’ that the individual becomes part of the whole. The history of the Church has shown that where the believer is honest to that confession then the Body of Christ is attractive to the unbeliever. When dishonesty reigns then the Body of Christ can be held in contempt.

In preparing for baptism either as a child where the God

parent takes responsibility until such time the child ‘come of age’ or the adult takes responsibility for promise made, it is of note that down through the ages as in today the promises hold firm as a necessity of life.

Ponder for a moment the following taken from the baptismal service: “my duty towards my neighbour is to love as myself and to do to others as they should do to me. To love and honour my parents. To order myself reverently and to hurt no one by word or deed. To be true and just in all dealings. To bear no malice nor hatred. To keep from stealing, gossip lying and slander. To keep my body in soberness and chastity and not to covet that which is not mine. To learn to work and sustain my own living.

The response at baptism, while demanding a great deal, is strengthened by the reality in the belief that the Holy Spirit is given to guide and direct in so far as the individual will give to that reality a determined effort.

This effort whether in health, sickness, disease or disaster is a constant. It is summed up in the Collect [prayer that ‘collects’ thoughts together] for the fourth Sunday after Easter: “Almighty God, who alone can order the unruly will and affection of the sinful: grant that we may love the thing which you command and desire what you promise that so among the sundry and manifold changes in the world our hearts may surely be fixed where true joys are to be found through Jesus Christ our Lord”.

Do You Feel the Love?

I was just thinking this morning how lucky I am to have such wonderful people around me.

I have friends and family who are there when I need them. There are also strangers that give me their smile when I’m feeling down and really need it. I have amazing experiences in the world that 10 years ago I would never have thought possible.

I pondered about how our community has changed. Some people are very lonely and we live in a city where thousands of people are living close by. I met up with a friend for coffee (she’s a pharmacist) and Mary (not her real name) was telling me about how she is sometimes the only social contact that some people have. They often can’t get an appointment to see their doctor for three weeks, so she is known in the town as one of the old fashioned pharmacists who will talk about their medication and be a shoulder to cry on when needed. This got me wondering about those many lives she’s touched who would otherwise be lonely and feel that they don’t count.

Social isolation and feeling lonely can have a significant impact on your mental health. This can lead to having a negative effect of low self-esteem, sleep problems and feeling more stressed. Sometimes feeling lonely and disconnected from society can be overwhelming and lead to suicidal thoughts.

We are social beings and need others around us to feel like we matter. Going out, laughing and having fun is essential to good mental health.

Cait Wotherspoon is a registered nurse, qualified teacher and a practicing counsellor and psychotherapist. Cait’s passion is to help people who have suffered loss.

Too many people spend hours every day travelling to and from work. This was Jordan Springs resident Seth Hinkley’s life before he heard about The Creative Fringe, which is Penrith’s leading co-working space. This month, it’s all about the older children, those over 6 years of age.

Some parents get scared of their children’s strong emotions.

They try to dampen them down, or they dismiss them, encourage or bribe the child into feeling something else, jolly them up, redirect them, or even rescue them. Have a think about which emotions your parents didn’t cope with well when you were a kid growing up – anger, sadness, curiosity, fear, joy, shame (humiliation).

When reflecting on this with parents, they have said to me “my parents didn’t cope with any of the so-called ‘negative feelings’, if I got sad, scared, or angry they would tell me to go to my room and come out when I was happy”. Now these parents find that they have difficulties in helping their own children process the same feelings because they have never been shown how. They also have difficulties accepting that these feelings are OK within themselves, and this leads to shame and self-loathing, which then leads to all sorts of dysfunctional ways of coping such as emotional eating, retail therapy, drinking, smoking, depression, or anxiety.

All feelings are OK (yes, even anger). Feelings are a normal part of being human. It’s what we do with our feelings that counts!

In my work with children, I always encourage them to locate the particular feeling in their body. This is based on neuroscience (which I don’t have enough space here to go into in detail). If a child can become adept at picking up cues from their body that they are getting overwhelmed they can calm themselves quicker. It’s like an early warning system. Support the child to locate where he feels the anger in his body. The answers I have heard from kids range from the feet (to run), the fists (to get ready to fight), the heart, the tummy, and the head. It’s the same process for adults and many of the parents I have worked with say they feel it in their chest.

Here are the steps to calming down for older children…

1. Ask yourself “How does my body feel?”

2. Try to calm down by: - taking three deep breaths (inhale through the nose, breathe deep down into the belly, and exhale through the nose); - counting backwards slowly; - think calming thoughts; - talk yourself through it (examples – I can do it, I can get through this, calming down will make me feel and think better).

Some of the children I have worked with say they got so angry at times that they had to use all of the above strategies. Some said they had to count down from 100. Some said they went to their ‘happy place’ to think calming thoughts. Some said that three deep breaths was just not enough. I encourage the child to think about the incident later and ask herself – why was I angry, what did I do, what did and didn’t work, what could I have done differently. I also encourage the child to praise herself for the things she did well.

When kids have big emotions, parents try to reason with them or lecture them. They ask them why they are like that, what happened, they tell them to calm down without guiding them through the calming down process. Neuroscience is showing us that when humans are in a heightened state emotionally, the logical and rational part of the brain shuts down. There is no point trying to reason with a child in the height of an emotion, it’s like trying to read Shakespeare to a dog – it doesn’t make any sense! They need to calm down first.

From the Principal’s Desk...Llandilo Public School As always, life is very busy at Llandilo Public School. Last term Paige, Chloe-Lee, Zoe Jannali, Kurt, Elyissa and Alexis took part in the Maths Deadlys competition organised by Cranebrook High School. When they returned to school, the students were very excited as they had won the poster competition and our school came first overall in the maths competition. It was a great day for our Aboriginal students and I must congratulate Cranebrook High School for organising this worthwhile event.

Recently many of our students received their ‘Dragon Pins’ for demonstrating outstanding behaviour, as well as Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best. These awards were presented at a special assembly attended by many parents.

Many students have enjoyed excursions recently. Last term our Kindergarten students visited Calmsley Hill City Farm. Judging by the look on their faces when they returned, everyone had a great time and the students’ recounts were very amusing to read.

Some of our older students namely Michael, Byron, Jasmine and Bobo visited Long Neck Lagoon. They learnt a lot of different skills such as map reading, how to use a compass and engaged in a treasure hunt. It was a very worthwhile, enjoyable day for all concerned.

To promote ‘Sun Safety’ our school has volunteered to work on a research project in conjunction with Macquarie University, Charles Sturt University, The University of Western Sydney and the Cancer Council. The purpose of the research is to determine what impact being a Sun Smart school has on the school community. Data will be collected through observations, focus groups and interviews. The findings from the study will not only be useful to our school, but will also help reduce the risk of skin cancer in school communities.

Our Stage 3 students recently organised a Mini Fete, where many fun activities were planned. Students needed to purchase tokens at a cost of 50c in order to take part. One popular event was the sponge throwing competition, where students threw wet sponges at teachers. It was a great day and all funds raised will go towards the cost of the Year 6 Farewell.

Our ‘Family Fun Day’ was a huge success, thanks to the dedication and hard work of our P & C members. All funds raised will benefit every child enrolled at the school and it was a great opportunity for the whole community to come together.

Thankfully the weather was kind to us on the day and I would like to thank everyone for their support.

As Christmas is approaching our P & C are now organising a Christmas Hamper raffle. Students dressed in mufti clothes were asked to donate tins, packets and non-perishable items. We were inundated with items, thanks to the generosity of our families.

Our school programs continue to expand. Last term 60 students participated in Swim School, which is a water safety program that takes place annually. It was quite amazing to see how much progress students made over a relatively short period of time.

We have now started a Gardening club, where many students are further developing their social skills as they learn how to plant vegetables, that will be eaten during ‘Crunch and Sip’ time. We have also promoted a Skipping Club, where students improve their fitness levels during recess and lunchtimes.

120 iPads were recently purchased, which are now being utilised on a daily basis in classrooms. The children are really enjoying these new learning tools and they are demonstrating a ‘love of learning’. It is wonderful to see everyone motivated and eager to take teaching and learning to a new level as we utilise 21st Century technology.

Graffiti Education Changes Attitudes

Term 4 at Henry Fulton Public School has begun with many exciting events and activities.

Our Sydney West Champion Girls Softball team played against the Sydney South West las month, but unfortunately were defeated. In every game, the girls have displayed outstanding sportsmanship and fair play.

Our Stage 3 students attended a performance at Riverside Theatre, Parramatta and really enjoyed this experience. We have also had seventeen Year 6 students participate in the filming of episodes for the quiz show, Its Academic at Fox Studios. They all had a wonderful time and they canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wait to view the episodes later next year.

We have also had a visit from the company called World of Maths which provides opportunities to experience Maths activities different to those normally completed in classrooms.

These problem-solving and guided discovery activities have been specifically designed to be motivating and hands-on, and to encourage thinking skills. Reports from students and teachers are that this was a valuable and enjoyable learning experience for the children.

It has been such a busy and exciting start to this term and there are many more exciting opportunities ahead!

Penrith City Council is funding a program to deter youth from travelling down the graffiti path. The Graffiti Education Awareness Program has been delivered in the Penrith local government area since 2008 and challenges the thinking of children and adolescents during a time in their life when they are experimenting, forming attitudes and beliefs as well as being influenced.

The program is delivered by Warner Youth Education and is a 45 minute education session offered to all primary and secondary schools in the Penrith local government area every year.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said the awareness program is part of Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s broader graffiti minimisation strategy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Education is one of three parts in our Citywide Graffiti Minimisation Strategy,â&#x20AC;? Cr Fowler said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Prevention and removal also make up that strategy; however education is a key component in reducing the need for removal. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The program is funded entirely by Council and addresses some of the root causes of graffiti vandalism including self-esteem and peer pressure.â&#x20AC;?

Expenditure on graffiti removal over the past five years shows that the emphasis on these three key areas is having an impact on the levels of graffiti in Penrith. Council spending on graffiti removal has decreased from $800,000 - $900,000 to $500,000 - $600,000 since the graffiti minimisation strategy commenced. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Council continues to receive positive feedback from the schools participating in the program which is matched by the demand to continue it,â&#x20AC;? A community fun day was held to celebrate the official launch of the upgraded Callisto Reserve playground at Cranebrook, earlier this month.

Upgrading the playground was driven by students from Cranebrook High’s Student Representative Council, who in partnership with Council, have also organised the community fun day to celebrate.

“Earlier this year I was on a panel at the Cranebrook Youth Leadership forum and was so impressed by the students’ ideas to address graffiti and vandalism I encouraged them to formally submit some ideas,” Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said.

“They put forward a proposal to improve Callisto Drive Reserve, and presented at a Council meeting where funding for the upgrade was endorsed,” Councillor Fowler said.

“We’ve been very impressed with the leadership and consideration of the young people involved and they have a lot to be proud of.”

Improvements include additional play equipment, shade sails, gym equipment, pathways, scooter track, picnic shelter and new seating. “These create a wonderful setting for local families to enjoy,” Cr Fowler said.

“And having the students from Cranebrook High involved in the design of the playground upgrade is a great example of the community working with Council to bring real benefits for local residents.”

• 2 Tbsp Icing Sugar • 250g Granita Biscuits • 1 Golden Delicious Apple • 125g Butter, Melted, Cooled • 1/3 Cup Frozen Blueberries • 3/4 Cup Sour Cream • 1 Egg Method 1. Place biscuits into a food processor and process to fine crumbs.

Transfer to a bowl. Add butter and stir until well combined.

2. Spoon mixture (reserving 2 tablespoons for topping), into 4 fluted, 11cm x 2cm-deep, loose-bottom tart pans. Press crumb mixture into base and sides of pans. Place in fridge for 20 minutes.

3. Place sour cream, egg and icing sugar into a small bowl. Whisk until well combined. Spoon into prepared pans.

Ingredients • 1 Tbsp Peanut Oil • 2 Tbsp Soy Sauce • 2 Tbsp Oyster Sauce • 1 Tsp Sesame Oil • 500g Chicken Mince • 3 Shallots, Thinly Sliced • 1 Tsp Finely Grated Ginger • 2 Cloves Garlic, Crushed • 4 Medium Button Mushrooms, Finely Chopped

• 220g Can Bamboo Shoots, Drained, Finely Chopped • 220g Can Water Chestnuts, Drained, Finely Chopped • 1/2 Cup (30g) Fried Noodles • 10 Small Iceberg Lettuce Leaves, Washed, Dried, Trimmed • 1 Tbsp Sesame Seeds • 2 Tbsp Crushed Peanuts

Method 1. Combine sesame oil, soy and oyster sauce in small jug or bowl.

2. Heat a wok over high heat until hot. Add peanut oil, then chicken.

Stir-fry for 3-4 minutes, breaking up mince, until the mince is just cooked through.

3. Reserve 1/3 of the shallots for garnish. Add remaining shallots, ginger, garlic, mushrooms, shoots and chestnuts to mince. Stir-fry for 2 minutes.

4. Add combined sesame oil sauce, stirring until heated through and sauce thickens slightly. Stir through noodles.

The calico cloth used to dress the pudding needs to be large enough to be able to tie tightly together; you can always trim it after the pudding has been tied and about to go into the pot. Don’t be shy with the tie!

To prevent this beautiful mixture from sticking to the calico, soak the cloth overnight and ensure the cloth is wet with a generous coating of flour before filling it.

To avoid mould from growing, once the pudding is prepared, hang in a low-humidity, cool-dry area. The flavours will mature and form a rich, flavoursome pudding for the whole family to enjoy.

Incorporate these 5 exercises into your strength routine for great results!!

1) Plank: When performed correctly, a simple plank is one of the most effective ways to tighten your entire core. Correct technique is the key. Keep your back flat and your belly button pulled in toward your spine.

2) Mountain Climbers: This vigorous variation of a standard plank kicks the core tightening up a notch. Angling your knees toward the opposite shoulder is a wonderful way increase the intensity even more.

Place your hands wider than shoulder-width apart on the ground in a push-up position. Bring one knee to your chest and then back to the starting position, alternate each leg quickly.

3) Russian Twist: Nothing quite brings the burn like a properly done set of Russian Twists. By holding a medicine ball or dumbbell in your hands, the exercise becomes even more effective.

Sit on the floor with knees bent like in a â&#x20AC;&#x153;sit-upâ&#x20AC;? position. The feet should be kept together and slightly off the floor. Keep your torso straight and your back off the ground at a 45 degree angle.

Hold a medicine ball or dumbbell with both hands. Next, the arms should be swung from one side to another in a twisting motion. Move slowly for a more challenging workout.

4) Knee Tucks: All too often I see people neglect their lower abs in favor of quicker, easier exercises. The fact is that our lower abs typically need the most work, so give them the attention that they need with these Knee Tucks.

Start on your back, bend your knees with your feet on the floor and knees touching.

Extend both arms overhead on either side of your ears, palms facing up. Exhale and bring your knees up towards your chest.

Slowly lower your hips back down to start position.

5) Side Plank: Side Planks are much more challenging than they appear at first glance. While the focus is mainly on your waist, due to the stabilising nature of this exercise, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re also working your entire core as a whole.

Put your feet and legs together as you lie on your right side.

Place your right arm under your body and lift your upper body so that your right elbow is directly under your shoulder. From this position, slowly raise your hips from the ground until a straight line is formed from your ankles to your shoulders. Hold the position for a moment, slowly return to the starting position, and repeat.
