

The Penrith Regatta Centre will be Running Scared™ in May. Turn off all the lights and it is remote enough to really make you think that you are out in the middle of nowhere. Prepare for the Regatta Centre to be transformed into your very worst nightmare.....

Rad Adventures have created an obstacle race that will take place entirely at night paying homage to the thriller, horror and paranormal genre.

There will be no cheering crowds just waves of scary creatures, challenging obstacles and a whole host of reasons to keep you running scared in Australia’s first 8km night obstacle race.

Running Scared™ consists of 8km and 15+ obstacles that will see participants swimming/wading 50mtrs independently, crawling, climbing, jumping, balancing, weaving and of course running from the spooky creatures that lurk in the dark!

The first wave will start at 6pm (sunset) and the last wave ‘The Witching Hour’ will run at midnight (100 spots only).

The event organisers Fully Rad Adventures said “The Regatta Centre at Penrith is a great venue for Running Scared™, with loads of tracks, bush land and event facilities to stage the best experience possible for participants.”

Spectators are welcome to come along and cheer on family and friends at the finish line. There is no charge for spectators. Spectators will not be permitted to enter the Running Scared™ course.

Welcome to the March edition of your community news. If you’re anything like me, you have had a busy month with children settling back into school, picking up on old routines and creating new ones, with homework, sporting and social commitments.

It is hard to believe we have already arrived at March, with one-quarter of the year having escaped us!

We have some wonderful local stories for your reading pleasure; including our feature story about the upcoming ‘Running Scared’ event to be held in May. Community Spirit Creating community is a deep longing that we all have, to share life and experience with others. At J@Tz, our aim is to help the children get to know our great God and Saviour Jesus better, and have loads of fun while they do so! On a typical week, they run around and play some games, sing a song or two, have some afternoon tea together, sometimes do a craft, and finish with a short reading and talk from the Bible plus talking to God in prayer.

Multicultural Community Inclusion Grants Extended Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith encourages local organisations to apply for funding under the second round of NSW Government grants of up to $20,000 to help fund projects focusing on inter-cultural and inter-faith activities.

Community Inclusion Grants, part of the Community Relation Commission’s $1.4 million Multicultural Advantage Grants Program, support local organisations which work to promote community harmony.

The second round grants will help fund projects with a particular focus on activities that bring diverse groups of people together by strengthening community infrastructures and cultural initiatives “Cultural diversity is important to our community and we want to ensure we fund projects which strengthen it,” said Stuart Ayres.

Minister for Citizenship and Communities Victor Dominello said we recognise the challenges smaller organisations face in attracting volunteers and raising funds and we encourage them to apply for financial support for projects which promote community harmony, offer mentoring and target geographically or socially isolated communities.

Examples of projects which received funding in the first round include: • A series of seminars to combat racism in schools; • An interschool sports day to promote fitness among young migrant women; • A social support program for elderly people from a minority migrant group; and • A mental health awareness program for young migrants in a regional community “In this second round, the focus is on supporting organisations which represent developing or less-established multicultural communities.” added Stuart Ayres.

Applications are now open and close on 14 March 2014.

SPOTLIGHT ON . . . Kaleidoscope Tuition SPOTLI Local resident and founder of Kaleidoscope Tuition, Rohan Hotchkiss, started playing music in 1980, at school. After school he further refined his guitar skills by playing in bands at local jam nights and by entering karaoke competitions for singing practice.

In 1999, Rohan attended Blacktown T.A.F.E studying ‘Music Business’ and ‘Copyright Law’ with the famous Alan Lancaster from Status Quo. Upon his successful completion in 2000, he continued on to Nirimba T.A.F.E and studied Certificate 3 in ‘Performance and Literacy’.

A career highlight arose when teaching at Glenmore Park Community Centre he founded a superstar in Natasha Duarte. Natasha is now a well-known performer with a record label and once upon a time played on Nova FM. Kaleidoscope started with white stickers being placed on the instrument to use as a guide for students. This helped when students went home as the chord shapes remained on their guitar, making it easy to remember the next time they picked up their guitar.

Rohan then introduced a colour coded system to apply to the notes of the musical alphabet [A] Aqua [B] Brown [C] Crimson [D] Dark Blue [E] Ebony [F] Fuchsia [G] Green. Applying these stickers to the instrument showed the students where to put their fingers as well as assisting in learning the notes on the instrument. Kaleidoscope then evolved as a Piano teaching method, where the sheet music is also coloured to the musical alphabet so you can sight-read music instantly.

It is a game to learn music correctly, with the Kaleidoscope method and you can have fun too; all it takes is the desire to succeed. There are a series of books available within the Kaleidoscope method which is a ‘self-teaching’ method to some degree, and, as with anything, it helps if you practice every day. The chord book of Kaleidoscope with over 500 chords will be out soon.

In 2015 Rohan intends to study a Bachelor of Music to further his studies and take Kaleidoscope to another level. Get in the game and learn how to discover the secrets and styles of all music.

iLearn Anywhere at St Joseph’s Primary School Kingswood Catholic Education, Diocese of Parramatta (CEDP), has selected St Joseph’s Primary School Kingswood to participate in their pilot iLearn Anywhere project.

The project targets Year 4 students who will each receive an iPad Air to support their learning at school and at home for the remainder of their years in primary school. Teachers will also be provided with an iPad Air and Teaching Educators from CEDP will work with them in the classroom.

The iLearn Anywhere project, facilitated by purposeful, effective and creative teaching, transforms learning. Students move from being content ‘consumers’ to own the learning by becoming content ‘creators’. While no device in itself transforms learning, the iPad is a powerful learning tool, which enables content creators to collaborate with others and to reflect on and share their learning beyond the classroom.

Fran Jackson, principal of St Joseph’s Primary Kingswood, is thrilled that students will have this opportunity to develop a wider set of technology skills while engaging in literacy and numeracy learning.

“To be selected as one of the eight primary schools participating in the project is a reflection on the great work our teachers do and their commitment in providing a rich learning environment for each of

our students. While the students will be excited to receive an iPad Air, the focus of the project is on using it to achieve improved learning outcomes. We look forward to the possibilities this opportunity provides for our students, staff and parents.” iLearn Anywhere will be launched at parent meeting 7.30pm Monday 10th March.

Ash Wednesday Ash Wednesday in March commences the season of Lent in the Christian calendar. It had its origin in the early second century after the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Initially lasting one to three days it slowly developed to the current 40 days of observance.

This was due the influence of Saint Athanasius [an early Egyptian Christian] It was never uniformly established throughout the Church, with the eastern Churches varying the length of observance. It was during the Middle Ages that the practice of marking the forehead with ashes became a common practice with the prayer “remember that you are dust and to dust you will return�.

This is a salient reminder that to all intents and purposes our life span is brief in relation to the ongoing path of history. Indeed very few live to be older than 110 years! Yet within our life span is the wonderful challenge to utilize our ability to the best, not governed by greed but the willingness to give in order that life is enhanced.

Lent emerged to enable greater concentration on life style of which fasting is one enabling factor. Today the media emphasis on diet and exercise, often considered to be avant garde, is in reality a secular development of the true religious fast.

Lent also encourages meditation to enhance life style. This is the practice of taking a particular teaching or theme and giving thoughtful consideration which in turn makes prayer more meaningful.

So the season of Lent often considered in terms simply of ‘giving something up for a time’ is better observed as a time of increased discipline [training] to conform to God’s will and purpose.

Discover, Decide and Discuss Local six year old, Kyla Devine (pictured) was born with the medical condition Biliary Atresia.

Biliary Atresia is a blockage in the tubes (ducts) that carry liquid called bile from the liver to the gallbladder.

The condition occurs when the bile ducts inside and/or outside the liver do not develop normally. It is not known why the biliary system fails to develop normally and the exact cause of the condition is unknown. It occurs once in every 15,000 births and is slightly more prevalent in girls than boys.

Biliary Atresia is treated through a procedure called Kasai Procedure that connects the liver directly to the intestine to allow for removal of bile. 1 in 3 are successful.

In Kyla’s case, the Kasai Procedure was unsuccessful and she had a liver transplant at the age of 5 months. Today, Kyla is a bright and happy year one student, who is here today thanks to an organ donor.

It was Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week from February 23 to March 2. Various Lions Clubs across the State recently held sausage sizzles on March 1 and 2 at over 90% of the 75 available Bunnings locations throughout New South Wales.

In conjunction with DonateLife, the Lions Clubs were able to pass on valuable information and knowledge about organ donation as well as raise funds through the BBQ’s. Donor registration information was available at Bunnings North Penrith.

How are you settling into the new-ish year?

With the kids back at pre/primary/high school, it’s onto sizzling routines, packing lunch boxes (sigh), washing school clothes, class information nights, notes from school, and lots of organising. It’s full-on isn’t it?

Sometimes with all of this ‘doing’ we forget about ‘being’ with our kids.

When do you make the time to just ‘be’ with your kids? Time that’s free of distractions, where you ‘hang-out’ and enjoy each other’s company, where there is space for them to talk about what matters to them (the big stuff and little stuff ) , and where you LISTEN. Some parents say their kids won’t talk to them, or they can’t get past the one word answers like ‘good’, ‘nothing’, ‘nowhere’, and ‘nobody’. I ask those parents if they make the time, and if they do, then do they shut-up? Kids clam up when parents pressure kids for answers, jump in and offer advice, rouse on them for getting things wrong when they’ve had a go. Kids are actually very smart and they can be supported to generate their own solutions to their problems – yes, even really little kids.

I have spaces in the day where I am “with” my kids and fill it with my silence and my presence – the walk home from school, afternoon tea, a snuggle on the lounge, one-on-one time with each of the kids even if it is just grocery shopping. Silence is one of my favourite parenting tools, but with the silence comes my openness and willingness to listen and use reflection when my kids talk (for more information about this, go to the “Reflective Listening” post at handsheartsminds.wordpress.com).

I recently asked a group of parents the qualities they value in a friend. They said someone who: • is non-judgemental • listens, listens, listens • doesn’t bombard you with advice • doesn’t blab on about their own stuff, or lecture • you can trust • cares You are not your child’s friend, but your role as a parent should offer the same kindness. When do you offer these qualities and ‘the time’ to your child?

St. Patrick’s Day is observed on March 17 because that is the feast day of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.

It is believed that he died on March 17 in the year 461 AD. It is also a worldwide celebration of Irish culture and history.

St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday in Ireland and a provincial holiday in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The actual colour of St. Patrick is blue. Green became associated with St. Patrick's Day during the 19th century. Green, in Irish legends, was worn by fairies and immortals, and also by people to encourage their crops to grow.

Shamrocks are worn on the lapel on this day.

In Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day, people traditionally wear a small bunch of shamrocks on their jackets or caps. Children wear orange, white and green badges, and women and girls wear green ribbons in their hair.

Many young people dye their hair green for the special day.

Many people wear green on this holiday to avoid being pinched.

From the Principal’s Desk Llandilo Public School Principal: Bruno Zuliani Dear Parents, Caregivers and Friends of Llandilo Public School, A very warm welcome to our school community to students and their families from Jordan Springs who have enrolled for 2014. I hope your association with our school is a long and very productive one.

This year as with all schools at the national level, we are introducing the new English syllabus across teaching programs K—6. Our teaching staff are well trained and confident in the new expectations having undertaken significant training over the past 18 months.

Our positive behaviour for learning principles of respect, responsibility and personal best are well inculcated in the school’s ethos and we are proud of our students in learning and in their conduct of behaviour.

A new member of the teaching staff has joined us as a permanent appointment through the targeted graduate suite of options in 2014 and we could not be happier. Welcome to the team Mrs Amy Sheens.

Our school carpark has been extended and is now able to accommodate most of the vehicles that frequent our school.

Panic Attacks If you have ever experienced a panic attack or witnessed someone having one, you will know it can be a very frightening experience.

Panic attacks are periods of intense fear or apprehension that come on suddenly. They are surprisingly common, varying in intensity and duration from minutes to hours.

Signs and symptoms of a panic attack include: • A sense of overwhelming & seemingly uncontrollable panic, fear or anxiety • The thought that you are dying or ‘losing control’ or ‘going mad’ • Increased heart rate, often feeling like a heart attack • Difficulty breathing (feeling that there is not enough air) • Excessive perspiration • Dizziness, light-headedness or feeling faint.

Triggers for panic attacks - basically any fear can trigger a panic attack – the memory of a traumatic experience and the thought that it could re-occur; fear of heights & falling, spiders, needles, flying, getting lost, etc.

As an onlooker what can you do? Stay calm and assure the person that they are safe. Speak gently but assertively and positively & get some help if necessary. If the person is in any danger, encourage them to move to a safe area.

What can be done to prevent them? By working with a therapist to address the underlying fear, the severity and frequency of panic attacks can be greatly reduced, if not avoided. EFT is effective, safe & noninvasive and is gaining world-wide recognition for helping people eliminate their fears.

Caring Hearts, Colourful Quilts Display of Vintage Quilts from the private collection of Kaye and Bruce Brown of the Finishing Touch a quilting service at Glenmore these quilts date back to 1930 and early 1940.

Airing of the Quilts Caring Hearts Community Quilters have been hard at work throughout the year putting together their 6th annual “Airing of the Quilts� to be held at the Arms of Australia Inn Museum, Great Western Highway, Emu Plains on Saturday 12th, Sunday 13th April from 10am to 4pm. On the day there will be live music 12-1pm, sausage sizzle, Devonshire teas, trading table with lovely handmade goods for sale, book store and Quilt raffle with the proceeds to Breast Cancer Australia.

The ladies have been busy this year having made over 100 quilts for the Airing, along with the help of quilters from wide and far, they were able to make and give over 200 quilts to the victims of the bush fires in Winmalee and Springwood.

They concentrated mainly on the children and supplied all the local primary and high schools, pre schools and friends along with quilts to the Salvation Army at Springwood.

The Caring Hearts Community Quilters make these quilts each year, they are not competition quilts but quilts made with love and the hope that they bring comfort to those that receive them.

Entry to see the quilts is $5.00 and this goes to help pay for wadding and fabric. Threads, time and energy come from the enthusiastic ladies in the special group.

A Little Ray of Sunshine Penrith Valley/Blue Mountains Cancer Help, a not for profit organisation are holding their annual SUNSHINE DAY for people living with cancer and their carer.

This day is free and reservations are necessary for catering purposes. On the day there will be therapies to try, such as Massage, Reflexology, Reiiki, Bowen, Meditation and Naturopathy plus neck and shoulder massages for carers.

Speakers will be in attendance to help with questions you would like answered and provide information you may not have known existed also after-cancer activities you may be interested in participating in.

Refreshments will be available all day including a wholesome lunch. There will be raffles to help fund some of the day, so bring along your small change. All therapists, speakers and volunteers are donating their time once again to make this day a success.

WHAT’S COOKING Irish Stew

• Easy • Serves 6 • Time 2hrs 30min Ingredients • 1 tbsp sunflower oil • 200g smoked streaky bacon • 900g stewing lamb, cut into large chunks • 5 medium onions, sliced • 5 carrots, sliced into chunks • 3 bay leaves • Small bunch thyme • 100g pearl barley • 850ml lamb stock • 6 medium potatoes, cut into chunks • Small knob of butter • 3 spring onions, finely sliced

Method 1. Heat oven to 160C/fan 140C/gas 3. Heat the oil in a flameproof casserole. Sizzle the bacon for 4 mins until crisp.

2. Turn up the heat, then cook the lamb for 6 mins until brown. Remove the meats with a slotted spoon.

3.Add the onions, carrots and herbs to the pan, then cook for about 5 mins until softened.

4. Return the meat to the pan, stir in the pearl barley, pour over the stock, then bring to a simmer.

5. Sit the chunks of potato on top of the stew, cover, then braise in the oven, undisturbed, for about 1½ hrs until the potatoes are soft and the meat is tender.

6. The stew can now be chilled and kept in the fridge for 2 days, then reheated in a low oven or on top of the stove.

Starting a Family?

Starting a family is obviously a huge moment in a person’s life, but it is also a time where seeking financial advice is highly recommended.

When starting a family, the income and expenditure requirements change immensely. Although initial expenses don’t grow substantially as children grow older, they account for more and more of the family budget. This is especially if full time child care or private school fees are involved.

The biggest change for most couples is going to a single income for a period of time. At the risk of generalising, most modern couples are duel income, at least before they start having children, and their lifestyle becomes reliant on both these incomes.

Preparing for living on one income presents some challenges.

The most effective way to prepare for this is to reduce financial commitments leading into having a family. This may involve reducing debts, cutting some lifestyle costs or building wealth in advance to prepare for reduced income.

This reduced income due to time off work, whether it is a matter of months or more long term, may open opportunities not normally available. There are strategies that are income tested. Whilst working full time, you or your partner may be unlikely to qualify for this, however earning a reduced income becomes a viable option.

The Government Co-Contribution is an incentive for low income earners to contribute to Superannuation. The Co-

Contribution sees the government match contributions up to $500 for those who earn less than $31,920. The maximum CoContribution reduces for amounts over this, phasing out at $48,516. Those that have the funds to make this contribution effectively double their investment instantly. For many, this period where income is reduced is the only opportunity they have to qualify for a Co-Contribution.

The Spouse Rebate is another incentive by the government for low income earners to contribute to Superannuation. Those who make after tax contributions to their spouse’s Superannuation fund can be entitled to an 18% tax rebate.

The maximum contribution for this rebate is $3,000, for those earning less than $10,800. This maximum reduces for those earning more with the rebate phasing out at $13,800. Again, the time off work whilst starting a family may be the only time many qualify for this rebate.

The most pressing financial planning matter surrounds insurance. Although many see insurance as a “dirty word”, there is no point in a couple’s life that they are so financial reliant on each other, and the death or disablement of one member of the couple has the potential to financial ruin a family.

With a young family, if the working spouse was unable to work for as little as a few months, with no income coming in at all, most families would be in financial hardship.

There are a number of insurance options and strategies that can avoid this financial risk.

Pet Dates a Huge Success Last month, Petbarn Penrith (Coreen Ave) in partnership with Paws 'n' Hooves Animal Rescue took part in Petbarn's first ever national pet dating event aimed at saving the lives of pets in need of a new home through pet adoption. Taking place on Saturday 15 February, just a day after Valentine's Day, it was the perfect occasion for pets and prospective pet parents to find their perfect match. Petbarn Penrith (Coreen Ave) and Paws 'n' Hooves Animal Rescue were able to re-home two pets as a result of the event. While nationally, 132 Aussie pets were re-homed through pet dating events hosted simultaneously in nearly 100 Petbarn stores across the country. Importantly, all adoption fees collected by Petbarn through the event went directly back to Paws 'n' Hooves Animal Rescue.

Paws 'n' Hooves Animal Rescue and Petbarn Penrith (Coreen Ave) worked together to coordinate the event not just to save pet lives, but also to help locals learn more about the importance of pet adoption and to encourage them to consider pet adoption first, when thinking about adding a pet to the family.

Patrick Bartush, Store Manager of Petbarn Penrith (Coreen Ave) says, "Our pet dating event was a huge sensation. We had a great turnout, which made it the perfect opportunity to spread the word about the significance of pet adoption. It was also a chance for locals to meet some of the gorgeous pets looking for a loving home. In forming new families, we also saved lives."

Importantly, the benefits of pet adoption don't just extend to the pet; research shows that pets can have positive effects on their owners by lifting their spirits and helping improve their health and fitness. One study from the US National Institute of Health# (NIH), found that dog owners who regularly walked their dogs were more physically active and had a reduced chance of being obese than those who did not own or walk a dog.

Camilleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Pets!!

I am so lucky that I can take my dogs to work with me every day. They sleep behind the front reception desk and pop up occasionally to say hello to the customers.

Bella is my 13 year old kelpie. She had a slight cough for 3 weeks and had chest radiographs and a heart ultrasound performed.

Bella was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a heart disease which causes the heart muscle to lose its ability to contract. As the heart is not pumping blood forward effectively, the blood backs up and causes fluid to build up in the chest, which Bella was then coughing up. Bella was started on heart medications and the cough has reduced and she is as happy as ever.

The usual outcome for DCM is only a few months, and Bella is now in her 7th month.

Each day I have with my best friend Bella is a gift.

Pony is my Great Dane x Bull Mastiff.

He is coming up to 3 years of age and he is still stubborn as a mule. I was kind of looking for a new dog to keep Pony company when Bella passes away, when I found a new dog at Hawkesbury Pound in October 2013.

My new dogs name is Callie, she is 1.5 years of age and is a Great Dane x Italian Greyhound according to the DNA test I had performed. Callie is 45kg and looks a lot like Pony, except she is a brown harlequin colour. I only had Callie for about 1 week before she became unwell. She had a fever and she was very quiet. Blood tests and ultrasound did not reveal the cause of her illness. I sent Callie to see the specialists at SASH at North Ryde, where they performed a spinal tap to obtain a sample of her spinal fluid. The spinal fluid was tested and was negative for bacteria, protozoa and fungi. Callie was diagnosed with Steroid Responsive MeningitisArteritis (SRMA), which is an autoimmune disease which attacks the central nervous system. Thankfully SRMA is treatable.

Callie was started on a 6 month course of corticosteroids, and she was back to normal within 1 week. Callie ate and drank like a horse whilst on the corticosteroids, which is a normal side effect of this drug.

Callie was weaned off the corticosteroids and thankfully has had no relapse of the meningitis.

Bella still runs my household and Pony and Callie are like 2 peas in a pod. Every day I have Bella is a blessing and even though I have had time to prepare, I will never be ready for the day when Bella passes away.

I also have 3 cats and 2 pet sheep, but they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t come to work with me!
