Chess Champ in our Midst What happens when a very determined four-year-old girl is given a chess board by her father for her birthday? And her next-door neighbour happens to be an International Master? And he starts coaching her? Well, she grows up to become a chess champion of course! Local resident, Kashish Christian is now 17 and in year 11 at Penrith High School. Since then, she has travelled Australia and the world winning many titles. Some of her achievements include: Under 8 Girls Australian Champion, Under 10 Girls Australian Champion, Under 12 Girls Australian Champion, Under 15 City of Sydney Champion, Under 18 Girls NSW Championship 1st Place, Doeberl Cup Minor Division 1st place, Doeberl Cup Best Junior Female and on top of that, she is a Candidate Master. The best thing about playing chess is “meeting so many new people and constantly being exposed to new situations” says Kashish. “The bonds I have made with people through chess are so unique because of their nature. Some of my best friends to this day live in different states, but it all works out through a mutual interest in chess” she said. She describes the atmosphere of the tournaments as ‘incredibly diverse’ and especially enjoys “in between rounds, where you and your friends huddle up to prep for the next round”.
