Little Zak’s Academy in Jordan Springs is among the biggest childcare providers in the area. It caters to children aged 0-6years.

NSW Grandparents Day recognises the role grandparents and older people play in our society – both things they have done and the things they continue to do.

To celebrate and thank their elderly community, Little Zak’s recently visited their local aged care facility, RSL LifeCare – Governor Phillip Manor in Penrith. Little Zak’s organised to take their preschoolers on the trip to meet with the local elderly residents and to spend quality time with them. During their visit, they enjoyed a morning tea, read story books, played and the children organised songs to perform to the residents.

This was not the children’s first time visiting the aged care facility. Since late 2018, Little Zak’s visits the residents on a monthly basis and have set up a pen-pal activity as the children love their time with the elderly.

Little Zak’s Academy Jordan Springs Centre Director, Leanne Gill said “Little Zak’s is a family-owned service provider that opened its doors in 2014. During our years of operation, we have many local families who utilise Little Zak’s and we strive to provide the best quality care for children within the local community”.

Christianity is ‘young’ in the wide spectrum of religious belief. While indeed the origin of much religious thought and practice is lost in the realms of history and the study of religious development, while interesting, can be an onerous task! Now prayer can be governed by two givens: prayer is made in trust and the Christian prays to God in Christ Jesus, but it is noted that the good Jew prays to Jehovah. The Muslim to Allah. The Hindu to the incarnations of Siva and so on in a variety of beliefs. So, trust is not necessarily unique to the Christian. The other given is the immensity of the universe. So why pray? Placed in the context of the teaching of the Incarnation (God in Christ), it is the realisation that this was an event not in the life of God, but of humanity. As such, the question is what do you think about Jesus the Christ?

Now, what is certain is that we are born to die and in answering the question what you think of Jesus the Christ - two factors dictates the faith: 1. The Resurrection of Jesus: We note on the day of the Resurrection not much was changed in the daily life in Jerusalem. Indeed, to this day the Jew does not accept the Resurrection.

2. The early followers: While recording different experiences and with some contradictions found in the New Testament of the Bible, there emerged a small group of Jews who believed and the rest is history. A sad note is that since that time, a witness of solidarity has not evolved with Christians often deeply divided in teaching and practice.

Now, understanding since the time of Christ in all religions has undergone a staggering development. Understanding of Jesus, who we acknowledge is a constant question; but what has not changed is his teaching on Love and the Christian obligation.

Helping Cameron

A fundraising event has been organised this month for local 7-year-old boy Cameron Mills, who has been diagnosed with Level 3 Autism, which is classified as Severe Autism, and is nonverbal. The family friendly event, Helping Cameron, will take place on Sunday the 17th November at the Pioneer Tavern in South Penrith, with funds assisting his care.

“The fundraiser is for Cameron and to help him get as much assistance as possible that we can’t afford or that the NDIS aren’t able to cover. We would also like to help Cameron’s school as well. The school is full of very sweet, loving and caring people that we would like to help out and donate to them” said Cherie Mills, Cameron’s mother.

“I decided to do this because I wanted to do something to help my son and I thought that people may be able to have some fun too. The NDIS can’t cover everything, so I just felt like I had to do it” she added.

The Helping Cameron event promises to be a great day out for the whole family. Taking place at the Pioneer Tavern from 1:00pm, there will be face painting for kids big and small, games, $10 play books and boppers and raffles with some fantastic prizes on offer. Drag queen bingo, with April Fools, is sure to be a hit on the day too.

It is hoped that the goal of $9,000 is reached for the fundraising event. You can also get behind and support Cameron by donating to a GoFundMe page that has been set up for him.

Great Result for Local Cadets at National Championships The Llandilo Rural Fire Brigade cadet team have returned home after recently competing at the 2019 Australian Fire Cadet Championships at Wesley Vision Valley in New South Wales, which saw them up against 23 teams in various challenges.

The local cadets placed 15th overall and took out 1st place in the knapsack response challenge.

The outstanding result for the Llandilo team was made even more impressive as many of the cadets have only been a part of Llandilo RFB for a year!

“We are very proud of the hard work and training that the kids did and the senior members that helped them train. We’d like to extend a big thanks to Tim Hearn, Llandilo RFB Senior Deputy and Chris Ellul, Llandilo RFB Vice President for all their help with the Llandilo cadets at the Championships” said Rick Burns, Captain of Llandilo RFB to the Jordan Springs Gazette.

My name is Kobhi and I am 9 years old. I love to help my Mum and Dad cook yummy food in the kitchen.

Each month, I will share with you some of my favourite recipes. Oh yeah, make sure you always have an adult helping you cook.

Ko's Cottage Pie

Ingredients

550gm Beef Mince 1 Onion - Diced 1 Cup Frozen Mixed Veggies 1 440g can Tomato Soup 1 440g Can Diced or Crushed Tomatoes 1 Tbs Tomato Paste 1 Cup Beef Stock 4 Medium Potatoes 1 Tbs Butter 100ml Milk Salt + Pepper to taste Method

1. Ask your adult helper to turn the oven on at 180 degrees or 150 degrees (fan forced).

2. Your adult helper needs to cook the mince and the onion in the frypan, until brown.

3. Add the frozen veggies now (my brother doesn't like these, but he just picks them out).

4. Add the tomato soup, diced tomatoes and beef stock. With your adult helper, cook on a low heat until it thickens and is not too saucy!

5. Let the mince mixture sit to cool.

6. The next step for your helper is to peel and dice the potatoes and boil them in a pot until soft.

7. Drain the water from the potatoes, add the butter and milk, mash them until smooth.

8. Grease a small oven proof tray; add the mince mixture and top with the potato mixture.

9. Ask your adult helper to place the dish in the oven for 35 minutes or until brown on top.

10. Ready to serve.

Sharing Stories, Sharing Spices

St Marys Corner and Cultural Precinct, in partnership with Nepean Multicultural Access and Penrith City Council, is proud to present Queen Street Riches and Textures’ 2019 project, Sharing Stories, Sharing Spices.

Celebrating the cultural diversity of St Marys, Sharing Stories, Sharing Spices focuses on six individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse communities with connections to St Marys participating in conversations about food and cooking. Two digital artists, Peter Long and Marty Walker, captured the experience of cooking and presenting a distinctive dish or spice through sound and image with six multimedia digital stories of 3-5 minutes in length.

Sharing Stories, Sharing Spices uses cooking as a medium through which we can learn more about each other’s cultures. The cultural material explored by the digital artists consists of collecting original stories about cooking cultures and traditions through spoken/written word, exploring diverse community languages, multicultural music, cultural artefacts relating to food and cooking, and documenting the cooking of an authentic dish.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said that the project was an impressive display of local talent and a beautiful tribute to the culturally and linguistically diverse communities in St Marys.

“This annual initiative connects artists and residents and provides a way to rediscover, document and creatively interpret St Marys” Cr Fowler said.

“Sharing Stories, Sharing Spices captures the rich cultural character of St Marys and what Queen Street means to this community.

“The stories these artists have captured tell us something of St Marys’ culture and its people. I am proud of the team for the beautiful work they have produced with this initiative” he continued.

Participants introduce their special recipes, cooking ingredients and spices, and take us shopping to their local grocery shop in Queen Street before taking us to their kitchens to cook their distinctive dish.

Chloe Crowned 2019 Miss Junior of Australia

Ropes Crossing’s Chloe Zrebiec has been crowned the 2019 Miss Junior of Australia at the Miss of Australia Finals, which were held in Melbourne last month. The 14-year-old also came away with the Miss Social Impact and Miss Popularity titles in the junior division of the national competition.

Winning the title of Miss Junior of Australia, Chloe was awarded with a sash and crown as well as various gifts to go along with this. She will hold her title for the next 12 months, before returning to Melbourne next year to hand it over to the next recipient. In the next year, Chloe will attend several events as an ambassador to promote the Miss of Australia pageant and to spread the message of positivity to girls and women alike.

“My reaction when I heard that Chloe had won was that of surprise as well as just crying with joy. It was very emotional” said Keri Murphy-Douglas, Chloe’s mother, to the Jordan Springs Gazette.

“Chloe had an instant smile, as she was so excited that she was being crowned Miss Junior of Australia” she added.

Now that she has competed in her first pageant (with an amazing result to add!), Chloe’s next pageant will take place this month locally at St Mary’s Leagues Club.

“Chloe would like to thank everyone that has supported her through this experience. Without all their support, she would not be as successful as she is right now. We would especially like to mention and send a big thanks to Hung Pham, the National Director of the Miss of Australia Pageant for the wonderful opportunity.

“She is extremely grateful for the kind messages sent throughout her pageant journey that encouraged her whilst she put all of her efforts towards this. We are so proud of Chloe” Keri ended.

The Great West Walk The Great West Walk, a walking route from Parramatta Park through Blacktown City and on to the foot of the Blue Mountains, is officially open.

Blacktown City Mayor Tony Bleasdale OAM said the 65km walking route is a great way to see some of Blacktown City’s many parks and reserves.

“Over half of the walk - 34 kilometres of it - is within Blacktown City Council boundaries” Mayor Bleasdale said.

The walk’s Blacktown component starts from McCoy Street, Seven Hills at the railway overbridge and continues through Marayong, Doonside, Rooty Hill, Mount Druitt, Whalan and Tregear to Mainwaring Street, Ropes Crossing in Wianamatta Regional Park.

“You can complete this walk in small sections and take the time out to enjoy what’s on offer in Blacktown, including the International Sports Park in Doonside, The Aquatic Centre in Blacktown, Nurragingy Reserve, and Federation Forest in Mount Druitt, the list goes on” Mayor Bleasdale said.

The walking route is an initiative by the Walking Volunteers who have collaborated with land managers and relevant NSW Government departments on mapping the route.
