Locals to Etch Their Mark in Jordan Springs History

Lendlease recently announced the ‘Name Our Streets’ initiative and invites locals to play a special role in helping shape the Jordan Springs East community by naming 25 new streets.

Residents are called upon to contribute to the next phase of the Jordan Springs development and share their suggestions for meaningful street names for consideration by Lendlease before a submission is made to the NSW Government and Penrith City Council.

The streets will be situated in Jordan Springs East including the new Woodland Plains release, which is nestled between the Regional Park and natural bushland and will cater to a rising demand for affordable housing in the area.

Many of the street names currently being considered by Penrith City Council have special meanings and honour the rich history and beautiful setting of the Woodland Plains.

The street names include Governor, dedicated to previous landowner Governor Philip Gidley King, Tyler inspired by the locally found Tyler’s tree frog species and Elimatta meaning ‘my home’ in an Aboriginal language. continued pg. 14

As the year races by, we find ourselves in Term 2 of school; Easter has been and gone, with Mothers Day just around the corner. In the blink of an eye it will be the end of financial year and we'll be donning our winter woollies!

Upgrade of Boronia Park Residents of Jordan Springs have had their say on an upgrade to the Boronia Village park, which promises to be a fun space for the entire family to enjoy with plenty of play elements for children.

Lendlease hosted a community information session at the park where parents and children had the chance to vote on four concepts that offered a variety of play experiences and physical challenges for children up to 15 years old.

The concepts were developed in response to earlier feedback from the community about Boronia Park and the playground, which is currently home to giant snakes and ladders boards, a chess table and climbing poles.

General Manager for Lendlease’s Communities business in NSW/ACT, Arthur Ilias, said the new space at Boronia Park is just one example of how we work with our residents to create a community with a real sense of belonging. “We care about the community at Jordan Springs. We want our residents to enjoy their homes as well as the community facilities, recreation spaces and parks that enhance their lifestyle,� said Mr Ilias.

Almost 100 votes were cast in total with the preferred concept including a slide and climbing equipment. Works are scheduled to commence in coming months subject to Council approval.

Boronia Village is a serene location surrounded by native vegetation and in close proximity to the village centre and the natural bushland corridor which has also recently been opened to the public.

As part of Jordan Springs’ development, Lendlease is providing sporting fields with hard courts, amenities and parking, lakes and water bodies, and 17 hectares of open space with parks, playgrounds and picnic areas.

There are three ‘marks’ of Christianity. The measure of how far the individual and society at large accept and respond to those marks determines how life is embraced.

First is Faith. It is accepted that Jesus who was free of any determination in politics or religion became to be worshipped as the Christ as it became obvious he spoke with authority unknown in recorded history.

In his resurrection the early believers recognized within their concept of God the action of the Holy Trinity: The Father in the Son through the Holy Spirit. The traditional God ‘out there’ became in the flesh ‘God with us’. It is true faith that enables despair to be overcome when so much in life is depreciated.

Second is Hope: Again it is accepted that in Jesus the Christ we have a powerful hope that gives meaning to life. We are born to die but in itself death is the opening to being in God’s purpose.

The created order continues to encourage our understanding.

In the beauty of the created order there is also the reality of death through disease, disaster, and man’s folly in exploitation and war. Hope discerns that ultimately the Creator’s purpose will become summed up when Christ Jesus returns to give judgement.

Third is Charity: a much maligned and misused word often simply seen as giving money or something to a worthy. But charity is deeper than that. It is the ability to discern the reality of life. We had no choice as to our birth. And charity recognizes

the family of man: the huge variety of race, custom and belief.

It is governed by the simple teaching of Jesus: do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Often not easy and the history of Christian martyrs gives food for thought.

When the kaleidoscope of life is considered the three ‘marks’ of Christianity are a potent measure of how far authentic and truly human life is embraced. Sadly mankind still has a long way to go. But when embraced, the effect on individuals and society at large gives example of the beauty and wonder of life.

Common questions I am asked when talking about the importance of learning to swim is “Why should children swim all year round? Surely it is only important to swim in the warm summer months? Won’t my child get sick?” These assumptions are completely incorrect!

Learning to swim is a long term, ongoing process, and consistency is the key to the development and maintenance

of swimming skills. Attending swimming lessons makes up an important part of a child’s weekly routine throughout their infant, preschool and early school years, and should not just be limited to the summer months, as the skills and behaviours taught in lessons need to be practised all year round to allow children to develop at their own pace. Unfortunately the risks posed by drowning do not go away in winter, so neither should the lessons.

Additionally, children under 5 are just beginning to develop muscle memory, and need constant reinforcement to retain skills previously learnt, so a break in lessons often results in a loss of skills. By taking a break in the cooler months, you may be wasting all the time and money spent on lessons previously.

By swimming all year round children remain confident in the water, and remember, regular exercise helps to keep the body healthy and fight off winter illnesses. Plus swimming is great cross training for winter sports! Of course you must attend a swim school with indoor heated pools, and be sure to use common sense and remove wet clothing, towel dry and cover wet hair, and get warm (a hot shower is a must!) and dry before leaving the swim centre.

It is important to remember that learning to swim is not just another option on the list of sports and activities available to children – it is an invaluable lifesaving skill – not a seasonal recreational activity. So, this winter, keep on swimming!

Katrina James – Capturing the Beauty of the West

Local Jordan Springs resident Katrina James is a commercial photographer and has worked in the industry for the past 16 years. Katrina has worked in many areas of photography ranging from weddings to music festivals and is now working on her personal project ‘The Westies’.

Katrina started ‘The Westies’ in 2015 when she returned to Australia after living in Germany and the USA. The Westies provided Katrina with a platform where she says she was “able to capture the great people [she] knew and knew of in Western Sydney.”

Many can agree with Katrina when she says that “growing up in the area… people had always been looked down upon.” On her travels and while living away, Katrina noticed that “people are the same everywhere and that where [she] came from was just as good as anywhere else.” She wanted people to start seeing the West the way she saw it. A place she describes as “a beautiful place to live and work”.

In an attempt to break the stereotype that many associate with Western Sydney, Katrina began telling stories of inspiring people through her photography.

Along with The Westies, Katrina is also currently working on creating great events in the area. She has just recently launched the Thornton Artisan and Farmers Market. Katrina describes the markets as “a great monthly market to come and buy items from local makers and creators as well as eat some great food and chill out.”

Katrina hopes to continue telling peoples stories and expand ‘The Westies’ project to cover more of the Western Suburbs.

Along with her photography, Katrina hopes to introduce other mediums such as video and print.

This month we continue the series on Parent Traps that we started last month. ‘Escalation traps’ are one of the most common type of parent traps, and involve ‘child escalation’ and ‘parent escalation’.

Child Escalation When children want something and don’t get it, they can learn that by escalating in their behaviour or emotions (hitting, crying, whining, nagging) they can get what they want. For example, a child wants a lolly in the supermarket. Although you say ‘no’ the child gets louder and more demanding, and you give in to avoid the fuss and judgement from other people in the store.

What is my child learning from this?

Parent Escalation When parents want something from their children they can escalate (nagging, shouting) to get the child to complete the task. For example, you want the child to switch off the computer and come to dinner. You ask several times and each time gets louder. You get to the point where you are screaming at your child, counting, or making threats and demands. This is where the parent says “my child never listens to me�.

What is my child learning from this?

Combination of Parent and Child Escalation Yes, you can have a combination of child and parent escalation.

The parent escalates in response to the child’s escalation, and fairly soon tempers are frayed, feelings are hurt, and nothing productive or helpful has been achieved.

Remedy?

Give clear, calm instructions. Stay calm, and follow through, so that your child knows that when you say ‘no’ you mean ‘no’ and when you want something done it gets done within a reasonable time frame without a fuss. And as always, continue to build a strong relationship with your child based on love, nurture and trust, because the strength of the relationship determines how much your child will listen and respond to you.

HENRY FULTON PUBLIC SCHOOL?

We are about to start another busy and exciting term at Henry Fulton Public School.

We have our students involved in many sport activities; and, also in many educational and extracurricular opportunities.

Our senior students will participate in a Cybersafety session with the Police Liaison Officer from Penrith LAC. Our School Captains will be presented with certificates by the Mayor at Panthers.

Many of our students are also taking part in University Of NSW Writing, Science and Spelling competitions.

Our Stage 3 students have completed their Peer Support Leader training with this valuable program being implemented from the start of this term.

Our teachers continually upgrade their skills and have recently completed both their annual CPR and Anaphylaxis training. We also have a very hard working P&C at Henry Fulton PS. Through their hard work in organising the Easter raffle, Mothers’ Day Stall and school banking, they provide important funds for the purchase of resources for students to use in our classrooms and it is an example of how closely the school and school community work together.

Site Establishment + Early Works Commence for Penrith Station Upgrade Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith last month announced that the NSW Government is getting on with the job of improving transport facilities at Penrith Station with site establishment and early works now underway.

“The upgrades will be a boost for the Penrith community, with the improvements designed to provide a better customer experience and increase capacity for future growth in the region,” Stuart Ayres said.

“The community will see more activity around the Station as we start setting up the site compounds and early works on station platforms.

“Once complete, customers using Penrith Station will benefit from new lifts and stairs to the platforms, an upgraded station concourse, improved bus, taxi, and kiss and ride areas, and upgrades to lighting and CCTV.” The improvements are being delivered as a part of the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program, an initiative to deliver modern, safe and accessible transport infrastructure.

Western Sydney customers have been major beneficiaries of the Program with a $150 million investment to upgrade six key Western Sydney stations, including Pendle Hill, Blacktown, Wentworth Falls and Flemington.

More than 50 car spaces will soon be reopened for Penrith customers near the corner of Jane Street and Castlereagh Roads, following work to resurface the existing gravelled area and install new lighting, fencing and drainage.

Planning is also underway to build a 300-space, multi-storey car park on the same block of land where the existing commuter car park on Lord Sheffield Circuit is located.

Since the Transport Access Program began in April 2012, more than 450 projects are underway or have been completed.

1 Tablespoon Olive Oil 250g Piece Pancetta, Cut Into 1Cm Cubes 2 Chorizo Sausages, Sliced 1 Red Onion, Chopped 1 Red Capsicum, Chopped 3 Garlic Cloves, Finely Chopped 1 1/2 Teaspoons Dried Oregano 1 Large Potato, Peeled, Cut Into 1.5cm Cubes, Cooked For 2-3 Minutes Until Almost Tender 400g Can Chickpeas, Rinsed, Drained 1/2 Cup (125ml) Dry White Wine 600ml Tomato Passata (Sugo, Available in Bottles from Supermarkets) 1/2 Cup (125ml) Campbell's Real Stock Chicken 1 Tablespoon Chopped Flat-Leaf Parsley Crusty Bread, To Serve

Heat oil in a casserole or large, deep frypan over mediumhigh heat. Cook pancetta and chorizo, turning, for 2-3 minutes until starting to crisp. Remove and drain on paper towel. Drain excess oil and fat, leaving 2 tablespoons in pan.

Return the pan to medium heat. Add the onion and capsicum and cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until softened. Return the pancetta and chorizo to the pan with the garlic and oregano. Stir for a further minute, then add the potatoes, chickpeas, wine, passata and stock. Season, bring to the boil, then reduce heat to low and cook for a further 10 minutes or until the sauce has reduced and thickened. Garnish with parsley and serve with crusty bread.

My Mother’s Day is Different!

This year is the first Mother’s Day I won’t be seeing Mum. My mum died on Christmas Day 2015 and I miss her and will remember her on this special day.

The things I miss about my mum: • Her smile, she had a smile that brightened the room.

• The way she jumped out of her seat when she saw me.

Mum had dementia and mostly knew me as the coffee lady.

• The way her eyes sparkled while we talked.

• The way that every time she looked away from me, looked up and noticed me like that was the first time she’d seen me that day. She noticed me and said, “Oh there you are, how are you?”

• Her happiness.

• How people at the nursing home loved her and took care of her.

There is so much more that I miss about her. This year I’ll be lighting a candle, having a coffee and remember my life with Mum. My brother sent this to me – “Mum, my mind still talks to you, my heart still looks for you, my soul knows you are at peace”.

That gladdens my heart and makes me smile.

If your mum has died I hope you find a way to remember her and do something to honour her memory. Be gentle on yourself and do what you need to do to take care of you.

I hope you all have a relaxing, peaceful Mother’s Day.

Over 50’S Coffee + Chat Club Turns One!

While attending a U3A meeting, Karen Cashen was approached with an idea to start a monthly “social� club in the local area. With Karen describing herself as “a bit of an introvert� she stepped out of her comfort zone and made things happen.

According to Karen, the club is “Just a few Jordan Springs locals getting together once a month for coffee and a chat.� This

provides people with an incredible opportunity to get to know each other.

Special events such as Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, allows for some lucky door prizes and other fun activities. Last year, Karen hosted a “Christmas in July� which was a lot of fun with a fashion parade and both men and women participating and winning prizes for best dressed.

The group meets on the last Wednesday of each month at the H’CafĂŠ and “Sometimes if needed it is held in the Community Corner of the Lend Lease buildingâ€? says Karen.

Having worked in Aged Care, Karen said the saddest part of her job was knowing that, “Most of the time it was only the health care worker that the residents interacted with.�

By starting a coffee morning, Karen wanted to create a relaxed environment which provided the older residents with an opportunity to get out of the house and meet new people and have a great time.
