Jordan Springs Family Get Their Runners On For Kids’ Cancer Carmen Wood, from Jordan Springs, will lace up her running shoes this June in support of a very special little girl.

Neuroblastoma Run 2 Cure Fun Runs & Family Fun Day is coming up on June 14, with all funds raised to go directly to neuroblastoma research funding at Children’s Cancer Institute. Neuroblastoma almost exclusively strikes infants and children. It is the third most common type of childhood cancer, after leukaemia and brain tumours, yet it is the #1 cause of cancer deaths in children under 5. This is a cause particularly close to Carmen’s heart – as she has had her own experience with this devastating disease.

When Carmen took her four-month-old daughter, Zoe, to the local doctor for a bloated stomach, she didn’t think it was anything serious – until the clinic’s paediatrician called and told her to come back to the surgery immediately.

Little Zoe had a mass on her kidney and was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma. Because she was so young and her cells were growing and changing so quickly, the oncologists decided not to conduct treatment – but when Zoe’s condition worsened, they started chemotherapy. ...Continued page 11.

As the year races by, we find ourselves in Term 2 of school; Easter has been and gone, with Mothers Day just around the corner. In the blink of an eye it will be the end of financial year and we'll be donning our winter woollies!

This month, we have stories of amazing courage and determination like that of our cover story; the search for Junior Mayor and Junior Councillors on page 13; Future-ready housing on page 3; and, a lighthearted laugh with an invasion of another kind on page 11.

Prayer is common to all religious practice. Down through the centuries prayer has been given too many configurations of God. In our time the majority have little interest in God- Jewish, Christian. Muslim whatever. Basically this is because there is difficulty in really knowing what we mean by the word ‘God’. In reality the attempt to ‘know’ God is the continual challenge.

Studies in the sciences have contributed greatly to the understanding of our universe and life itself but the question why has yet to be satisfactorily answered.

Religion down through history, from primitive man through to our own generation, has thrived on the search to answer and in particular to give meaning to existence. So it is in trust the various gods are worshipped. The Hindu, the Muslim, the Jew, the Christian, the Animist etc all place their trust in what they believe is the true God. Such movements as Buddhism and Atheism in themselves seek to answer the ‘why’ of existence by an appeal to ethics or a philosophical standpoint. Essentially prayer is common to all.

There are many interpretations of prayer and a wide variety of practice. So the question to the Christian is: what makes Christian prayer so special? Basically it is because: 1.

It is directed through a person in history who by his life and work challenges the person to answer the question he posed: ‘who do you think I am?’ It is not an appeal to a book or a code of ethics. It is to seek the person.

2.

It is directed to God who is recognized as Father.

The person who prays is seeking the Father recognizing the particular personal relationship. As the rite of baptism when a person is christened affirms – we are children of the Father.

Scripture records pray to the Father in secret and the Father will reward you in secret- the relationship is personal.

3.

It is directed not to satisfying the personal whim or desire but to conform, shape our lives on the basis of the divine imperative: Love God, Love your fellow man. It is in giving, not in taking that life finds meaning. This holds constant despite what can and does occur in depreciating life.

4.

It is directed to the beautiful hope that in the end we shall see God not as reward for what we have become but as a sharing in the fullness of life itself. This is why the liturgy of the Church is so vital. Here the individual is gathered up into the meaning of life- that all has been created and with the life and work of Christ the totality of life looks forward to its completion and fulfilment in the purposes of the Creator. As we affirm in the liturgy “We are the Body of Christ. His Spirit is with us” and that is the wonder of Christian prayer.

We all love a good excuse. We love getting out of a tight spot with a clever one liner: “I really need to go to the bathroom!” …

“Doctor’s orders!” … “I’ve got a lot on my plate at the moment. Don’t ask right now, it’s complicated!” … “The dog ate it!”?

But getting too good at making excuses can actually be bad for us. We can make such a habit of getting around difficult problems and uncomfortable situations that we never know the benefits that come from facing them. We can miss out on growing through the challenging experience and we also can miss out on amazing things that happen as a consequence.

At its worst, we can turn down really great opportunities without even understanding how good they are. Jesus warned against exactly this kind of excuse-making when he taught about the way some people respond to God. He described it as an invitation to a great banquet, that went out to many potential guests. …

But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’

Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.’

Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’ Luke 14:18-20 Their reasons might seem fair enough, the pressing concerns of everyday life. But compared to the privilege of enjoying a banquet with the God who designed marriage and created the

world of fields and oxen, the excuses seem pretty lame.

Today, all too often, people make the same mistake, the same excuses: property, work, relationships. Real concerns, but what’s more important than responding to God’s invitation?

300g Packet Frozen Blueberries 2 Cups Chilled Low-Fat Milk 200g Tub Natural Low Fat Yoghurt, Plus Extra to Serve • 4 Scoops No-Fat Chocolate Ice Cream • 1 Banana, Chopped • 1/4 Cup Chocolate Malt Powder • 2 Tablespoons Golden Syrup • 1 Tablespoon Wheatgerm Method 1. Combine blueberries, milk, yoghurt, ice cream, banana, malt syrup and wheatgerm in a food processor.

2. Process until smooth. Pour between 4 tall glasses to serve. Top with a swirl of yoghurt.

150g (1 Cup) Self-Raising Flour 375ml (1 1/2 Cups) Buttermilk 1 Egg, Lightly Whisked 40g Butter 1 Medium Pink Lady Apple, Peeled, Cored and Thinly Sliced 250g Mixed Fresh Berries, to Serve

Lemon-Spiced Butter • • •

100g Butter, Softened 2 Teaspoons Mixed Spice 2 Teaspoons Finely Grated Lemon Rind

Method 1.

Sift the flour into a large mixing bowl. Make a well in the centre. Whisk the buttermilk and egg together in a jug. Pour the buttermilk mixture into the well and whisk to make a smooth batter.

Melt half the butter in a medium non-stick frying pan over medium heat until foaming. Spoon 80ml (1/3 cup) of the batter into the pan and top with apple slices. Cook for 1 minute or until bubbles appear on the surface and the pancake is golden underneath. Turn and cook for a further minute or until golden.

Repeat with remaining batter and apple slices, greasing pan with butter before each batch. (To freeze, see below.)

To make lemon-spiced butter: combine the butter, mixed spice and lemon rind in a small bowl. (To freeze, see below.)

To serve: Spread pancakes with lemon-spiced butter and arrange in a stack. Top with berries and serve immediately.

Positive Parenting

Phil Nunn, an Australian psychologist, says that parenting is like having a rope around your waist. Parenting is all about knowing when to let the rope out and when to reel it in.

I take this metaphor a little bit further. The rope around your waist is the relationship you have with your child.

No rope = no relationship. Without a relationship there is no letting out and no reeling in. Your child is flailing about at the end of the rope without being hitched to something. That’s a dangerous and scary place for a child to be. In my experience most of these kids look angry. This anger masks hurt, all children want to feel connection and belonging with their primary caregivers.

Without a strong and positive parent-child relationship, your child will not listen to you and will not do as you ask. It really is that simple. I believe that having a strong relationship with your child is the most important thing that you can do as a parent.

I reckon that building relationship is about 80% of the parenting effort. So, if you are disciplining and punishing your children about 80% of the time, then think about taking an about-turn, and concentrate on relationship instead, and see how that changes things.

So, how do you develop a positive relationship with your child?

Hugs, touch, care, unconditional love, attention, spending time with them, descriptive praise, nurture, listening to them when they talk, are relationship builders.

Things like put-downs, name calling, criticism, teasing, telling them that they are ‘bad’ or ‘naughty’, and swearing at your kids are relationship killers. If you don’t like being treated that way, don’t treat your kids that way.

Lots of parents say to me, “I don’t have time to spend lots of time with my children”. Phooey! You’re already spending lots of time yelling at them, arguing with them, and punishing them. What about the chores? The washing-up police aren’t going to knock on your door any time soon. And here’s the best-kept secret to parenting – spending small amounts of time (a few minutes) regularly throughout the day is worth

more to your child than spending a half day per week. If you are not doing anything super-important, stop to listen to them or look at what they want to show you. Top up their emotional cup as often as you can.

If you are reading this, and you think that your relationship is not that great with your kids, and they are angry at you, not listening to you, and not doing as you ask, then it is not too late. It’s never too late to build a relationship with your child.

Dr Robyn Dolby also uses the rope metaphor to explain how parents relate to their children. She says that if your child is used to being out on the end of the rope most of the time, then you need to reel the rope IN very slowly. Some parents pull on the rope too hard, and the child pulls harder. That will lead to even more fights. Nope, just reel that rope in very, very slowly, and prove to your child that you can be trusted to be the parent they need you to be.

The same can be said for children who have been kept too close and too controlled (over protected) or kids who experience anxiety. You need to let the rope OUT very slowly, so they don’t get scared.

Relationship. It is essential to growing strong, resilient, healthy, and happy humans. Kids don’t need stuff, they need YOU. The relationship you have with your child is their first experience of love. They will take what you teach them into their friendships and their intimate relationships. What are you teaching them about love?

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT........................

HENRY FULTON PUBLIC SCHOOL? We have started another busy and exciting term at Henry Fulton Public School. We have our students involved in many sport activities; and, also in many educational and extracurricular opportunities.

Life Education will be presenting valuable lessons for all our students, covering topics such as Cyber Safety and making sensible health and safety choices. Also, students in Years 4-6 will participate in bike safety lessons at the CARES facility which is supported by NSW Police.

We had several senior students represent Henry Fulton PS at the ANZAC Day Ceremony at Penrith Paceway and our School Captains will be presented with certificates by the Mayor at Panthers.

Many of our students are also taking part in University Of NSW Writing, Science and Spelling competitions. Our Stage 3 students have completed their Peer Support Leader training with this valuable program being implemented from the start of this term.

Our teachers continually upgrade their skills and have recently completed both their annual CPR and Anaphylaxis training. We also have a very hard working P&C at Henry Fulton PS. Through their hard work in organising the Easter raffle, Mother’s Day Stall and school banking they provide important funds for the purchase of resources for students to use in our classrooms and it is an example of how closely the school and school community work together.

Fortunately, Zoe has finished treatment and is now in remission – she is a typical cheeky 3-year-old with no long-term side-effects.

Zoe is one of about 40 children in Australia who are diagnosed with neuroblastoma each year, and 50% of these children won’t survive. Carmen is passionate about raising awareness and funding – because until it happened to her, she had no idea childhood cancer even existed.

On the Lookout for a Junior Mayor and Junior Councillors As part of Local Government Week 2015, Penrith City Council is giving lucky students from Primary schools across the Penrith Local Government Area, the opportunity to be Junior Mayor or Junior Councillors and take part in a mock Council meeting.

Now in its fourteenth year this competition gives our future local politicians a chance to dabble in local government and democracy.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said the competition provides a unique opportunity for primary students to learn about the role of Council in the local community.

“We’re giving one lucky student the chance to be Junior Mayor and 14 others the chance to be Junior Councillors,” Cr Fowler said. “I only wish there had been a competition like this when I was growing up. This is a fantastic opportunity for our young residents.”

In keeping with Penrith’s Bicentenary celebrations, the 2015 Junior Mayor competition has a Bicentenary theme. To enter the competition, students need to outline what they think the City of Penrith will be like in another 200 years.

Entries must fit on one A4 piece of paper, or be an audio visual file. Entries can be a story, poem, an artwork or comic strip. “I’m looking forward to seeing the entries,” Cr Fowler said. “We’re always looking for good advice from the community - no matter the age of residents.”Entries must be submitted by Friday 29 May 2015.

The winning Junior Mayor and Junior Councillors need to be available to attend introductory meetings at Council’s Civic Centre on Monday 15 June and Monday 13 July 2015. The mock Council meeting will be held on Monday 3 August 2015. Music for Life – Cure Brain Cancer Foundation Fundraiser

Bereaved Mothers Day 2015 Mothers Day is a painful and challenging celebration for mums who’s child has died. This is made more unbearable by advertising and the media showing happy families with their children. So, in 2010 Anna Jarvis had the idea to celebrate bereaved mums, honouring her own mum who had 7 children die. This day falls on the first Sunday in May. Not all mums have a child to show for their motherhood, it’s an emotional time. Some women are confused about their status, “Can I call myself a mother?” The answer is, “Yes you can!” You carried this precious baby inside of you (it doesn’t matter if it was a short time or till term).

So, if you or someone you know has had a baby die (before, during or after birth) here are some ideas to help you celebrate your motherhood.

Acknowledgement What a bereaved mother wants most is acknowledgement that she is a mother. Celebrate her motherhood, wish her a “Happy Mother’s Day”.

Say her child’s name Hearing your baby’s name is magical. Take the time to talk about her child, look through pictures and let her tell you about her experience of her child. This helps keep the memory alive. In a strange way it assists you through grief because you realise that your child will never come back but will always live in your memory.
