#AnzacSpirit Not Lost in 2020 When Anzac Day services and memorials were cancelled this year, many Australians came together to collectively look at alternate ways in which we would still have a day of remembrance whilst practicing social distancing and being isolated from one another.

A movement began and it was soon decided upon that we would each stand on our driveways at home at dawn and observe a minute’s silence.

As we were unable to participate in a service, there were several ways in which we could commemorate Anzac Day 2020.

RSL NSW suggested that you could record yourself reciting the ode or sharing a message on social media using the hashtag #ANZACSpirit. They also suggested that whilst listening to a streamed commemorative service, you could ‘light up the dawn’ by lighting a candle to remember those who fought for our country.

Students who play instruments in school bands also participated in various musical projects across the country, which saw them perform ‘The Last Post’ at 6:00am on their driveways at home (after advising their neighbours of their plans on Anzac Day).

Mateship plays a big part on Anzac Day, with many veterans, their families and friends coming together to spend time with one another in years gone by. Instead, this year it was replaced with phone and video calls, where checking up on a mate was more important than ever.

How ever you chose to acknowledge Anzac Day this year, one thing was for certain. That was that Anzac Spirit is still very much alive in Australia, New Zealand and right around the world. Many kept sharing stories to show that the spirit of Anzac remains. Lest we forget.

Support Knows NO Boundaries this Mothers Day Motherless Daughters Australia (MDA) is the only national not-for-profit organisation specialising in support after the loss of a mother, with focus on informing, representing, connecting, and supporting women and girls whose mothers have died. They help their community navigate the everyday and life’s major milestones without the support of their mum. With a network of around 4,000 in total and an online support group of more than 2,500 women, there is a real need for such support.

The lead up to Mother’s Day in particular, is extremely challenging and given that we are even more isolated this year due to COVID19, MDA has a range of online initiatives to ensure its community feel continued support and connectedness.

Motherless Daughters Awareness Week (May 3-9) is specifically in place a week before Mother’s Day to raise awareness that the organisation exists as a support network, and to help raise awareness and increase education within the wider community.

During this week, women and children whose mums have died will be invited to participate in a social media initiative and record a 20 second video about how they will be honouring their mum this Mother’s Day. They can then upload it to their account, tag the organisation and use the hashtag #honouringher.

The online support group which can be accessed via Facebook, is also a wonderful and comforting source of support, not only for Mother’s Day, but throughout the entire year. Women connect and listen, advise and empathise daily with nothing but love, understanding and compassion.

Motherless Daughters also focuses on supporting the wider community and friends and family or motherless daughters to better support them in a more informed and insightful way. A factsheet that has been developed in consultation with their network, is available for download from their website.

If you or someone else you know has lost their mum and may benefit from this organisation, please help raise awareness and let them know.

Ishil’s Story “My mother Susi was my best friend, support and source of strength. We lost her suddenly and traumatically in November 2018.

I would imagine at any age losing your mum comes as a shock. When mum died, I struggled with such grief while also trying to parent and help my children with their own grief of losing their beloved nana” said local resident Ishil Sterling-Levis.

Reaching out online and finding an online support group helped Ishil understand that she was not alone. It gave her the safe space she needed to release feelings about her loss that were difficult to describe to those that had not experienced them.

“This year, I am finding it easier to talk about my mum without breaking down as often. I focus on happy memories and often find writing these memories down and, sharing them cathartically and with the help of a trauma/ grief psychologist Christine, I am slowly finding my way forward” said Ishil.

How are you all doing in the current conditions?

What are you doing well?

• I am wondering if most conflict is caused by expectations that aren’t communicated well?

We can become unstuck when we have really high expectations and low warmth and affection. There is no payoff for doing the right thing.

I am seeing some families thriving. They are spending more quality time together where they are enjoying each other’s company. They get school work done in the morning which leaves the afternoons for play. They play board games. Kids are kept busy with simple activities in the home and outdoors. They are taking advantage of the activities offered on the internet and Facebook. The parents are reflecting on what is going well and what they could do differently. They are having family meetings to sort out any problems as they go along.

Some families are loving not having the pressure of packing lunchboxes, getting out the door, getting in the door, getting dinner ready to make sure the kids are bathed and in bed to do it all again the next day. Everything is more fluid and parents are going with their children’s natural rhythms. They are doing the ‘we are in this together’ slogan in the home with a lot of fun and humour thrown in.

Going on a Bear Hunt With exercise restricted to half an hour a day away from the home during isolation, the option to explore is limited. That is, of course, if you are going on a bear hunt. That’s right – a Teddy Bear Hunt! A worldwide movement has begun, where families place a teddy bear somewhere visible in their home, where children and adults of all ages can see them passing by on their daily walks or runs.

The teddy bear could be in the window of a bedroom, your car or just sitting in your front yard. There are no limits with how creative you can be with displaying your bear, with some members of the community using certain themes. It could be a bunny around Easter, a bear dressed as a soldier for Anzac Day or a mummy bear with her family for Mother’s Day. Once you’ve displayed your bear for all to see, you can choose to simply sit back and surprise passersby or to post photos online.

Local groups right across social media have formed, where you can post a photo of your bear and your suburb.

It’s important to note that when you are out on a teddy bear hunt and you see one, do not touch them! You can admire them from afar, but do not go near them, pick them up or move them.

During the coronavirus pandemic, we all must practice social distancing and that also means from the bears as well.

The next time you’re exercising - going for a walk, run or even as a passenger in the car, look out for the teddy bears. They are a reminder that we’re not alone and that we’re all in this together during these ever-changing times ahead. r A local bunny greets passersby for Easter | Image Supplied

It is still possible to have fun at home whilst we are all selfisolating. Even the most boring of jobs, that is taking out the bin each week, has now become an event. People all around the world are encouraged to dress up and add a little flair when wheeling the bin out. This phenomenon first gained popularity right here in Australia and you could say that local residents Jennifer Sargeant and David Delaney have taken this to new heights!

David recently dressed as an astronaut, complete with a full spacesuit, when taking the bin out. The momentous occasion was filmed by Jennifer, his partner, and posted online on Facebook in the Bin Isolation Outing group.

The video was filmed in one take and was welcomed by the group, which boast almost 1,000,000 members worldwide, before going viral.

“As soon as my friend told us about the group, I thought what a great idea it would be to post a video for everyone to enjoy.

Well, it blew up and I remember it hit 500 likes in a matter of minutes. It’s now had over 6,000 likes, 500 shares and thousands of views” explained Jennifer.

“David was born in 1969, which was also the year that man first walked on the moon. We thought, instead of having a moon landing, why not have a bin landing! Everyone knows what a spacesuit is and it’s relatable and has a global theme. It all just made sense” she smiled.

The spacesuit was originally purchased online last year for David’s 50th birthday and used for a fancy-dress party.

“It takes about 5 to 10 minutes to put on and can get quite hot in there. Even though the video was filmed in the morning, I was still sweating” said David.

The video was made even more realistic with David improvising by walking slowly like an astronaut, just like Neil Armstrong did all those years ago on the moon. Once pushing his bin to the end of the driveway, he placed an Australian flag to mark the achievement.

“My only request to Jennifer before she filmed the video was that she had to yell out ‘Action’ at the start” David chuckled.

Jennifer and David both agree that the purpose of the lighthearted video was to help put a smile on people’s faces during this difficult time.

“We had so much fun making this and hope that it brings just as much joy to watch. We encourage everyone in the community to give it a go and try it. The world needs it right now” they ended. r

Together in Song Like many in the entertainment industry right now, Jordan Springs musician Steve Head has been unable to perform on stage due to the current coronavirus pandemic. After requests from family and friends from all around the world who follow his singing, Steve decided to bring his music to the people and perform online, via live feeds on Facebook. His live performances at home have also featured his 6-yearold daughter Michelina, who is delighting in the opportunity to sing with her dad.

Steve has been singing all his life. He never knew that someday he would decide to take it seriously and do something with it, after being encouraged by a friend after a family tragedy saw him withdraw a lot from social activity when he was 25.

“Michelina has been singing since she could stand and talk, but I have never pushed her. I’d rather let her make that decision to hopefully follow the same passion that I have for it. She really looks forward to the live feed performances and it’s a great way to help with her confidence” explained Steve.

Sharing the home stage with her dad has given Michelina the opportunity to perform for everyone, from family in Italy through to friends at school.

“She has already received many positive comments and words of encouragement and we know this is bringing much happiness to others. Michelina is getting her own little fan base” Steve glowed.

At a time when isolation can leave us feeling down, Steve believes that music can help pick us up, “I believe music is healing, especially in times like this as it can help people relive memories. It reminds them of special people in their lives and distracts from the doom and gloom. It can also make them feel that they are not alone and that they can stay connected in a positive way through social media. Music uplifts your mood and we hope these live feeds have people up and dancing at home”. r

A Birthday with a Difference

In Scripture, it is recorded that Jesus the Christ, disappeared from the sight of the Apostles. This has become known in history as the Ascension and has become tradition in the Christian faith. On reflection, it presents some difficulties.

The Apostles believed in a three-tier universe. This concept is no longer tenable with what is known about the universe today. There is no ‘up’ or ‘down’ but an ‘out there’ with gravity keeping everything in place. Yet, in common parlance we still ‘look up’ to space. As such, the Ascension tests the credibility of reason for its acceptance. Certainly, one factor is that the Ascension is seen as the completion of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection and gives credence to the affirmation that Jesus was the Christ (God with us) completing the very long history of Semitic religion and prophesy.

To the Apostles, the Resurrection gave the conviction of God with us in Christ and the Ascension was the totality of our humanity being received into the totality of life in the Holy Trinity: the Father who created; the Son who cleared the gulf between humanity’s capability and humanity’s weakness and separation from that capability and the Holy Spirit that ‘confirms’ or ‘makes strong’. Humanity’s capability is the ‘eternal now’.

While astronomy raises more questions than answers (and this science is one of the most challenging amongst all the sciences), it is in celebrating in worship the Ascension a particular dimension is added. That dimension is the ‘great unknown’ of giving meaning and understanding as to why there is life, why there is a wonderful and almost incomprehensible universe.

The life, death, resurrection, and ascension allow answers to be provided that enhances understanding and allows the created to honour the Creator.

It is every 12-year-old boy’s dream to have a birthday party filled with their family and friends, food, games, and a day of fun. For local boy, Charles Powell, this year’s celebrations would be different, with his party cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, Charles’ parents Lisa and Vin Powell organised a Zoom party, where his family would surprise him online, via video conference from all around the world.

“Charles was pretty disappointed to have to cancel his party with all of his mates and cousins. We really wanted to do what we could to make it special for him, so we had a family Zoom party!” said Lisa Finn-Powell, Charles’ mother.

With his siblings unable to fly up from Melbourne to join him, the family had a gift opening session on Zoom. Each member of the family had their own window, which saw Charles’ mother (Lisa) and father (Vin) as well as brother (Nick) and sister (Belle) in different rooms of the house. Older sister Grace and her boyfriend Pim were in their garden in Melbourne, along with older brother Will at his house. Charles’ Aunty Kari, who lives in North Carolina in the US, even popped in as a surprise visitor.

“To open each present, Charles ran up and down the stairs and all over the house to where we were all sitting with our computers. The whole experience was a lot of fun. We also did a screen share of our birthday card to him, which said ‘You are getting a DOG!’. At that point, everyone went mad with excitement. It was unexpectant to all of the family” explained Lisa.

Of course, no birthday is complete without a cake and this year Charles was treated to a Star Wars ™ themed chocolate cake, with R2D2.
