New Jordan Springs Community Hub Opens Penrith Council is pleased to announce that the brand-new Jordan Springs Community Hub is finished and ready to open in March.

Council’s Facilities team recently held open house sessions to introduce the community to the new facility, where delicious refreshments were enjoyed and the vision for the Hub was shared with how the community makes use of its multi-purpose spaces.

Open house sessions were held at the Jordan Springs Community Hub, 2-6 Cullen Avenue, Jordan Springs, on 28 February, 1 March and 3 March. Everyone was welcome at the drop-in sessions.

Penrith Mayor Cr John Thain said the building was a real feather in Penrith’s cap.

“The Jordan Springs Community Hub is the first of its kind in the Penrith area, and we want it to be well used by local communities,” he said.

“It’s been built using sustainable materials which makes it comfortable to use all year round and helps reduce running costs,” he continued.

Our Local Netball Club

Ready for 2018

Jordan Springs Netball Club looks set to have their biggest season yet this year in the Penrith District Netball Association, with the popular local club growing in both player and team numbers.

At this stage, the club will have 140 registered players making up a total of 16 teams. This is an increase of 5 teams, compared to the 11 teams that took to the court last year.

“With the new season, we’re looking forward to seeing all our returning and new players progress, improve their skills and enjoy their netball” said Michelle Barnes, President of Jordan Springs Netball Club.

Although the local club is still relatively new, with it’s inaugural year in 2017, they reached a milestone last season with one of their senior teams making it to the finals.

“The overwhelming response from the community to be able to field 11 teams in our first year, seeing the enjoyment and smiles on the faces of our junior players together with one of our senior teams making the finals were all highlights for the club” added Michelle.

The new season begins on the 5th of May and there are still vacancies in the 6-7 years and 12-13 years teams.

The club have secured the services of some new sponsors this year, and are still seeking further sponsors who may be interested in supporting them.

WATER SAFETY

The residents of Jordan Springs have been consulted by Lendlease on the aged care facility proposed to be built near the shopping centre.

Most agree this is a suitable use of the land and welcome the older members of our community to our area. The important issue is the design of this large building and how it integrates with its place in the streetscape.

Good architectural design and parking are most critical to how it will enhance the ambiance of our lovely estate. Let us all hope that council’s professional staff, the designers, the operators and our ward councillors deliver something we all can be proud of rather than having a boring big box.

Why Should We Swimming Lessons?

I’ve been speaking with lots of parents in the weeks since Christmas and since school went back and there seems to a common theme for us all – we have too much to do, not enough time to do it all, and not enough cash to stretch to cover everything all the time! Life is, quite simply, busy and expensive. So, under these circumstances, why should we continue to prioritise swimming lessons?

Convenience. No matter the ages of your children, with a little planning, you can usually arrange your children’s lessons all on the same day, at the same time. We run lessons 7 days a week, at 2 locations.

Less than the price of a cup of coffee per day.

Swimming lessons are great value for money when considering the skill they teach our children. We also offer discounts for multiple children and/or multiple lessons to make lessons more affordable for families and for children needing to catch up.

Swimming lessons improve learning outcomes at school.

Research conducted by Griffith University over four years has concluded that children who swim, demonstrate more advanced cognitive and physical abilities than other children.

The children tested were anywhere from six to 15 months ahead of the normal population when it came to cognitive skills, problem solving in mathematics, counting, language and following instructions.

Fitness and fun.

In a world where technology is becoming more and more prevalent, and the government is now offering rebates to encourage physical activity in children, it’s increasingly important to continue to motivate our kids to be active and have fun the old fashioned way – have you ever seen a child not having fun splashing about in the pool on a hot day? For me, this is a part of my childhood that I’ve continued thorough to adult life! Swimming is fun!

A skill for life.

Swimming can, quite literally, save your child’s life. In my mind, all the other reasons to swim, however compelling, are peripheral to this fact. Of the 291 people who drowned in Australia last year, 41 were children under the age of 14. 41 families lost a child. These deaths were mainly in swimming pools in the 0-4 age group, and rivers, creeks and streams in the 5-14 year old age group, and were largely attributed to lack of supervision for the younger children and lack of a basic level of swimming skills and water safety knowledge in the older age group. Learning to swim from 6 months is a must in Australia and the only responsible choice for parents.

And if your child can swim, why continue? There are lots of reasons, including improving technique, cross training for other sports, maintaining fitness, participating in swim club and swim meets, and the personal discipline of the sport of swimming. Swimming is for everyone, all year round, and for life.

International Women’s Day Profile: Joanne

Flanagan

There are some compassionate people in the world who volunteer their time, money and skills, helping complete strangers, with the sole purpose of bringing happiness to those who are in need.

Jordan Springs resident Joanne Flanagan is one of those people. She is the Vice President of an amazing organisation called Angel Gowns Australia. They provide services to bereaved families who have suffered the unimaginable stillbirth or death of their baby, families who are or have gone through the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or families who are impacted on by a child’s life-limiting illness or special needs.

And, what they do is simply beautiful. They use donated wedding dresses to hand craft exquisite little baby garments which they then gift to hospitals, funeral homes and directly to families through special orders. They also make tiny tutus for hospitals and children’s charities all over Australia.

Flanagan first joined the organisation in May 2014 in memory of her own three ‘angel babies’. “I joined as a non-experienced seamstress. I had never touched a sewing machine until I joined Angel Gowns Australia.

Making my very first Angel Gown garment was and still is a very proud moment and memory for me” said Joanne.

She is the mother of five other children and describes how being involved in Angel Gowns has been “very precious and heartbreaking at the same time” and how humbling it is to help families to “dress their baby on their final journey”.

Reflecting on the meaning of International Women’s Day, Flanagan said that she feels it is important “to show kindness and respect and show strength that we can get though anything, to be the glue of the family and to listen and be there for friends who need support or just have a chat and have a laugh”. She added that she drew inspiration from her own mum who guided her to the person she is today.

Balancing Technology

Don’t! Stop! No! Quit! Not! Kids hear those words all day long.

And they quickly learn to tune them out.

Ever seen what kids do when an adult yells out “don’t run!” ?

They run!

So, why don’t parents phrase instructions in a positive manner?

Tell the child exactly what we want her to do? Our brains are hardwired to look for the negative, to be alert to any stress or threat, and as a result we speak in a negative way.

When parents tell the child what they want them to do, rather than what they don’t want them to do, miracles happen. Kids listen.

“Jamie, wash your hands for dinner.”

“Put your socks in the washing basket.”

“Please put your bowl in the sink.”

This is called a ‘start’ instruction. You tell the child what you want him to do.

There is also something called a ‘stop’ instruction. You use that when a child has done something wrong.

You tell the child what she has done wrong, and what to do instead.

Example: “Jamie, you are jumping on the lounge. You have to sit on the lounge.” And you wait quietly for the child to comply.

That’s all. No other words are necessary. You don’t need to give the child a 20,000 word dissertation on why jumping on the lounge is a bad idea. You don’t need to yell, cajole, bribe, or threaten. You don’t need to call him ‘bad’ or ‘naughty’. You don’t need to mention that you have caught him jumping on the lounge every day since he was two years of age. Save your words. Paying lots of attention to mistaken behaviour will guarantee that you will get more off it.

With consistency, your child will get it. If he doesn’t comply you can issue a consequence that is related to the mistaken behaviour. In the example above, it would be to sit on the floor for a few minutes. Taking the iPad away isn’t related to jumping on the lounge.

School has been back for over a month. Homework and sport commitments have started. Assignments are rolling in.

It’s often this time of the year we start to reflect on routines and expectations, especially when it comes to our children.

Is my child getting enough exercise and sleep? Is he studying enough? Is she overusing technology and always glued to her phone or tablet? How do I ensure my child is living a balanced life when technology is embedded in our everyday lives?

It is no secret that technology is changing, and has changed, the way that we live. We rely on it to communicate, play, pay bills and work. We even use it in our schools to aid learning.

Educational settings are adorned with Interactive White Boards, laptops, tablets and computers. Some schools participate in the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program, use web-based learning platforms to set tasks and encourage self-directed learning and virtual interaction between students and teachers. Technology in educational settings allows for greater global connection, instant access to information and prepares students for their ever-changing digital future. There is no denying this fact.

Although technology usage in schools certainly has massive benefits, there are many concerns about the detrimental effects technology can have on children. Childhood obesity, the degradation of social skills and shift in family dynamics, bullying and accessing inappropriate content are all serious and valid fears held by parents and experts in this field. It is imperative that we remain vigilant and considered when allowing children the use of technology and set boundaries and rules for usage that are reasonable. Schools already have these policies in place.

What is reasonable, you ask? Well, it is not just about minimising the time spent using technology but rather what that time is spent doing. You need to ask yourself if the digital interaction is adding value to your child’s life in some way. If the answer to that question is yes, then it is most likely an activity that would sit comfortably within the ’acceptable’ parameters for your family. If technology usage is causing changes in behaviour, lack of adequate rest and physical activity or impacting on your ‘real-life’ interactions, then it is probably something that needs to be reviewed and clear guidelines put in place. Competitors from Cranebrook Little Athletics Centre are celebrating their recent club success at the Regional Championships held at Blacktown International Sports Park last month.

Cranebrook had over 52 athletes compete at Zone in December last year, with 38 of those athletes progressing to the recent Championships.

Despite the intense heat the weekend the Regional Championships were held, 4 of their athletes cemented their place at the State Track and Field Championships to be held in March at Homebush.

To qualify for State, athletes needed to finish in the first two places of their events. Little Athletics NSW then selects the next best 8 clear final performances across all regions. The local club has quite a few athletes anxiously waiting to see if they will qualify as part of the next best 8 performances to join the State Champs.

The Camilleri Family were out in full force at Blacktown International Sports Park. The trio made up of Lachlan (Under 17’s Club Captain), Toby (Under 12’s) and Jemma (Under 9’s) all walked away with 6 medals between them. Toby set a new Regional Javelin record of 32.96m and Jemma won her Under 9 Discus event, which was her second year in a row. She will now be able to join her older brothers in her very first State Championships.

Under 14 athlete Taylah Copland competed at the Championships on her 14th Birthday and said she was so happy to qualify for State for both her 400m and 80m Hurdle events.

Jack Affleck qualified for State with a huge jump of 4.18m in the Under 10 Boys Long Jump. The Junior Boys Relay team made up of Jack, Brody, Toby and Dylan also ran a PB time in the relay to finish a respectable 3rd in a very tight race.

Mars Bar Cheesecake

ingredients 250g plain chocolate biscuits 150g butter, melted 2 tablespoons brown sugar 20g butter, extra 300ml thickened cream 50g milk eating chocolate, chopped finely 3 teaspoons gelatine 1/4 cup (60ml) water 2 (250g) packets cream cheese, softened 1/2 cup (110g) caster sugar 3 (53g) Mars Bars, chopped finely preparation 1. Blend or process biscuits until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add butter process until just combined.

Press biscuit mixture evenly over base and side of 20cm springform tin, place on tray. Refrigerate about 30 minutes or until firm.

2. Meanwhile make butterscotch sauce, combine brown sugar, extra butter and 2 tablespoons of the cream in small saucepan. Stir over low heat, without boiling until sugar dissolves.

3. To make the chocolate sauce, combine chocolate and another 2 tablespoons of the cream in a separate small saucepan, stir over low heat until chocolate melts.

4. Sprinkle gelatine over the 1/4 cup water in small heatproof jug. Stand jug in small saucepan of simmering water, stir until gelatine dissolves. Cool for 5 minutes.

5. Beat cream cheese and caster sugar in a medium bowl with an electric mixer until smooth. In a separate bowl, whip thickened cream by beating with an electric mixer until soft peaks form.

6. Stir gelatine mixture into cream cheese mixture with chopped Mars Bars. Fold in cream.

7. Pour half of the cream cheese mixture into crumb crust.

Drizzle half of the butterscotch and chocolate sauces over cream cheese mixture. Pull a skewer backwards and forwards through mixture (zig-zag) to create marbled effect. Repeat with remaining cream cheese mixture and sauces.

8. Cover cheesecake. Refrigerate for about 3 hours or until set.

200 Years Since First Llandilo Land Grant in 1818 2018 marks 200 years since the first land grant in Llandilo.

Samuel Terry, born around 1776, was working as a labourer in Manchester, England when he was convicted on 22 January 1800 of stealing 400 pairs of stockings. He was sentenced and transported to Sydney where he served as a stone cutter. Upon his death, 38 years later, he was the wealthiest man in the colony.

Terry did very well for himself, becoming a rich Sydney merchant, wealthy landowner, philanthropist and large shareholder in the Bank of New South Wales.

On 13 January 1818, he was granted 950 acres in the place we now know as Llandilo, also the Deerubbin Local Aboriginal Land Council Area. He named it Terry Brook, after himself of course, and in 1831 Terrybrook Road was established. He also owned quite a large amount of land around the Castlereagh and

Cranebrook area.

At the time of his death in 1838, his estate was valued at £200,000. A portion of Terry Brook was sold as ‘Llandilo Estate’.

The name ‘Llandilo’ was derived from a small community in Carmarthenshire, Wales, ‘Llandeilo’, which was named after a wellknown Celtic Saint of the 6th century, St. Teilo, a contemporary of St. David, the patron Saint of Wales.

In 1888, 50 years after Terry’s death, the land was purchased and subdivided into ‘orchard blocks’ by a Mr. Sullivan of Sydney who kept the name, Llandilo. Many of these blocks sat unoccupied for a lot of years, the reasons of which were written that ‘The primeval bush still holds the ground’. It took until the 1930s Great Depression for the last blocks to be purchased.

In 1985, the Samuel Terry Public School, opened in Cranebrook, named after the stone cutting, stocking stealer who turned his life around.

Prayer is a practice common to all religious belief. For many people prayer is resorted to in stressful situations but find in reality that attempts to pray are less than successful. While prayer in itself is a natural and often spontaneous impulse it is also an art and as such has its own laws and techniques. Christ challenged his followers: “ask and it shall be given to you, seek and you shall find; knock and it will be opened”. Now if this is to be gained without effort, spiritual immaturity will be a constant.

Just as we search the universe for law and order to understand, so it is that the laws governing prayer give understanding. A brief look at some of these ‘laws’: The law of attention: this principle is common to all life. We become what we attend to. It is often said that ‘environment makes the man’ but in reality it is only what is attended to that determines outcomes. Christ directs that when one prays be alone, and as such faith becomes a force in what one does when alone with thoughts, aspirations and concerns. It is this quiet reflection we gain the living conviction that there is God who cares.

The law of reverse effect: we experience this reality when the more we concentrate at overcoming matters that depreciate life, the more they become dominant. It is between a weak and wavering will and a strong will and so it is important to know the difference between wishing and willing in defeating that which depreciates life.

The law of perseverance: there is the parable of ‘the man who knocked at midnight’ in which Jesus calls for perseverance and he does not mean that one should always pray the same

requests, but stresses instead the intensity of our desires. The parable teaches if all people with their faults and weakness can give good gifts to their children, how much more will God give to those that ask in sincerity and intensity.

The law of limitation: within the laws of prayer there is individual freedom. True prayer will not ask for a miracle. It is within the resolve to face the given situation realistically.

Another law is that of progress: faith directs us to an end. That end is to be in Christ knowing that at death we ‘shall see God’. It was Pascal who asked ‘why has God established prayer?’. To this answers “to communicate the dignity of causality”.

Once more Easter is to be celebrated at St David’s and as we consider Jesus’ prayers before his execution, the ‘laws of prayer’ provide a positive base on which we can contemplate and come to some understanding of the life and work of Jesus the Christ. from. Pg 1

We all love rides, fairy floss and showbags and what better time of year than Easter to get together, young, old and young at heart to make memories. We know that the Easter Show can be expensive (especially when the bank account is still recovering from the Christmas holidays), so we want to bring the show to you.

For the 6th year running, we will have a range of entertainment right to your door step, including rides, games, food and showbags. As a gift from us and our sponsors, there will also be a variety of free activities including an Easter egg hunt, door prize raffle, fireworks (Friday and Saturday at 7pm) and more! There will be no entrance fee plus parking is free and ample! So, do as we do, support local family business, join in the fun and meet some of us. We are still growing!! Yay!! We have employed another Veterinarian to accommodate the growth of the business.

New Veterinarian - Ingrid Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital would like to welcome Dr Ingrid Lliguin to the team.

Ingrid grew up in New York City, which made it difficult to have animals, however from the age of four she knew being a Veterinarian was her destiny and managed with birds and turtles until she was able to have her two beautiful dogs Olaf and Meister. Both were brought over from St. Kitts and Nevis (an island country in the West Indies) where Ingrid studied at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine and graduated with a Doctorate degree of Veterinary Medicine in 2017. She also completed a year of study at Sydney University, in addition, she completed a diagnostic imaging externship at Animal Medical

Centre in New York, pursued her interest in wildlife by working with sea lions at the Brooklyn Sea Aquarium, participating in Safaris at Kruger Park in Africa, spending time at Monarto and Adelaide Zoos, and volunteering in Spay and Neuter programs in both Africa and Costa Rica.

Ingrid is interested in all aspects of small animal medicine but most of all has a love for soft tissue and routine surgeries.

Ingrid spends her free time with her two crazy pups, visiting different beaches, going on hikes and adventures to explore as much of Australia as possible.

Veterinary Nurse - Sheridan is Back Off Maternity Leave Sheridan has been on maternity leave for 16 months and has returned to part-time nursing. She enjoyed her time off with Hayley and is very excited to return to work.

New Kennel Hand - Lachlan Lachlan joined the team in December 2017. Lachlan is currently in year 11 at high school He is really interested in agriculture, all things to do with animals and he loves playing sport.

He has a dog named Chloe and bird named Bob. Lachlan always looks forward to coming to work to help people and see smiles on faces and he is excited to be part of the team.
