Architect Appointed for New Primary School for Jordan Springs

Concept designs for the new Jordan Springs Primary School have been released and an architect for the project has been appointed.

This represents reaching another milestone on delivering the Government’s commitment to begin construction of new school in this term of Government.

Minister for Western Sydney Stuart Ayres welcomed the new school being built for the local community.

“The Government promised to start construction of a new school in this term of Government and we are delivering on that commitment,” Mr Ayres said.

“The new school ensures students and families in Jordan Springs will have the very best when it comes to school facilities.”

Education Minister Rob Stokes said the NSW Government was working hard to deliver the school facilities students and local communities need.

“This project will help provide the high-quality education our children need to succeed in the 21stcentury,” Rob Stokes said.

The NSW Government is spending $4.2 billion over four years building 120 new or upgraded schools and $747 million on school maintenance. This is the biggest investment in public school infrastructure in the history of NSW. The meaning of Christian worship as encouraging our style of living and convictions is best seen when the individual meets with others in the service of Holy Communion. Jesus the Christ, once executed some 2000 years ago is alive and His spirit is present.

Conviction is affirmed of the value of truth, justice, courage and honesty to which we are obligated. So it is in Jesus we find the basis and meaning of that obligation. As such it means involving ourselves in the reality of life. It can mean taking risks in relying on our own depths, on other people, on the way things happen.

We don’t need to be starry eyed and unrealistic and to suppose that we shall never be let down as we open ourselves to this obligation. Jesus himself was vulnerable and suffered. His

death placed the possibility of being let down at the heart of the Christian’s faith. But behind the ignorance, fear, selfishness in us, God is at work bringing good out of evil as after the cross came the resurrection: behind death there is life. As such in the service of Holy Communion [Eucharist, Mass] the death and resurrection of Jesus are celebrated. In one of the liturgies for Holy Communion after the prayer of thanksgiving comes the call to proclaim the mystery of faith.

Those gathered for worship respond; ‘Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again’. In the service particularly in eating bread and drinking wine the orientation of our values and setting our compass in Christ is enforced. In these elements of bread and wine we eat by faith the Body and Blood confirming that our life in its fullness is in Christ.

Probus Club Kicks Off The Jordan Springs Probus Club was formed on Tuesday 27th March, with the first meeting being held recently on Tuesday 24th April. Approximately 20 people turned out for this inaugural meeting with the main aim of establishing the Executive Committee and Calendar of Events for the first year.

The meeting discussed how the club would support the Probus values of supporting and promoting Friendship, Fellowship and Fun in retirement. It also expressed interest in establishing some special interest groups such as walking, movies, theatre, wine and food, travel and photography. Regular dining events will be planned with lunch and dinner at local eateries and restaurants.

The first of these being lunch at the Colonial Hotel in Werrington.

Several events were suggested for the club such as The Postman’s Run on the Hawkesbury, The Railway Museum at Thirlmere, Brisbane Waters Ferry and lunch. Some of these would be utilising a Gold Opal Card for public transport with others suited to carpooling or coach hire. A suitable coach hire solution will be pursued by the club.

Members can look forward to an exciting program featuring many events. This will include the above events, interesting guest speakers, monthly meetings, the opportunity to travel locally or around the world and enjoy exclusive discounts through the Probus Member Benefits Scheme, access to exclusive Probus Travel Insurance plans, developing new interests and staying active. This all suggests an exciting and successful future for the local club.

Mobile Community Pantry Eighteen months ago, Ropes Crossing Church and Anglicare formed a partnership. Their aim was to lend a hand to the community by providing savings on essential groceries via a Mobile Pantry. The Mobile Pantry has been a real benefit to those who have visited so far.

The Mobile Pantry runs every fortnight on a Tuesday afternoon between 1:30pm and 2:30pm in the Ropes Crossing Hub. It is not just for ‘poor people’. If you have a health care, pension or immigration card you are eligible. Please come and check it out.

When you arrive, you will be given a number. If it is your first visit, you will register and get a card to use each fortnight there or at other Mobile Pantries around Sydney. You are invited to help yourself to free afternoon tea whilst waiting. When your number is called, you make a contribution of $10 or $20 for one or two bags. The bags are given to you at registration. You go around the van and select one or two of each type of product until your bag is full. Available groceries typically include cereal, long life milk, pasta, rice, biscuits, snacks and packet mixes. Usually a bag is worth $50-$60, which is a great saving.

Sometimes there is also free fruit and vegetables.

At the end of the year, those who are registered are invited to a Christmas Party. It is a great afternoon tea and the first forty families are given a free Christmas hamper to help them celebrate.

Weight Watchers Jordan Springs In 2016, Stephanie Ralph lost 18kgs in 6 months with Weight Watchers. She is now a Weight Watchers Coach helping their members reach their own goals!

She first joined Weight Watchers in her early 20’s, around 14 years ago. She needed to drop around 10kgs, so she joined. This was her first ever attempt at a ‘diet’. Nepean Puffers And Wheezers

On the second Wednesday of every month, a group of people gather in the Kingswood Neighbourhood Centre with one thing in common: breathing. The Nepean Puffers and Wheezers was founded in 1999 to provide education and support for people with a varying range of lung conditions.

Local resident, John Ruttle has been the President for a decade now. “One of our biggest problems is the breathing” he said, “so we try to get as much info as we can on it”.

Ruttle’s journey started with a persistent cough about 17 years ago, that was diagnosed as Bronchitis. Three years later, he was diagnosed with Emphysema and then two years after that Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

The COPD Foundation describes the disease as ‘an umbrella term used to describe progressive lung diseases including emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and refractory (non-reversible) asthma’. It is characterised by increasing breathlessness and is currently incurable. The treatment focuses on management to help people live better lives.

According to a statistic by the Lung Foundation Australia, ‘almost 1 in 7 people 40 years and older have airflow limitation and more people are dying from COPD each year’.

As well as sufferers of COPD, there are people with other lung diseases and breathing problems who attend the Puffers and Wheezers group. The first two hours of the meeting usually has a guest speaker and then after that there is a ‘Lungs in Action’ exercise class that is free and run by a qualified physio.

“We try to encourage people to come along and join in, even if they only do a few little steps” said Ruttle.

One of the most important aspects of the group is the social side. It’s important to meet and bond with people in similar circumstances. There are organised bus trips to help people get out and about a bit more as well.

The next meeting of the Nepean Puffers and Wheezers is on 13 June at Kingswood Neighbourhood Centre, 19 Bringelly Road. The first month is free and it is $3 per month after that, with a $2 raffle each month as well.

Emma’s New Challenge Jordan Springs’ Emma Randle is a champion athlete that loves a challenge. In five short years of competing in Karate, she reached the top of her sport as the Australian and National Champion and has now taken up the sport of rugby union for Penrith RSL. Emma first started Karate in 2013, at the age of 13, for IMC in Kemps Creek. Her hard work and dedication lead to her winning two World Cup belts in Koshiki Fighting and Kickboxing, where she was undefeated for 4 years. Emma was also awarded the World Cup Champion in Lightkick (Kickboxing), where she had to fight six girls, one after the other, without a break to win by knockout.

“We are so very proud of our daughter Emma. She has achieved quite a lot in her time in martial arts. Her father and I decided recently that she needed a break, much to her heartbreak. She has just started her first year of playing rugby union” said Shemara Randle, Emma’s mother.

So far, Emma has found trading the Karate gi for a footy jersey and shorts to be a different challenge, but one she is relishing and enjoying.

“In martial arts, she was able to use her strength and focus to defeat her opponent. In rugby, there are more rules to follow and she also is navigating her place as the only girl in the team. She is a prop and gives the boys a big run for their money” added Shemara.

Emma’s years of competing have brought her new friends from far and wide. She has always had a word of encouragement for whoever she has competed against through her sportsmanship.

With plans to try out for rep footy already, we have no doubt Emma will once again reach the top.

“Don’t let fear hold you back. Use the butterflies in your tummy

Winners are Grinners Jordan Springs Netball Club have started their second season on a high, after being named the Penrith District Netball Association (PDNA) March Past Winners for 2018 at the Jamison Park Netball Complex in Penrith last month.

“March Past this year was amazing! We had a great turnout of players, coaches and umpires to march and represent our club.

This year, we asked all teams to come up with an inspirational sports quote that we could display while marching” said Michelle Barnes, President of Jordan Springs Netball Club.

“Thank you to all teams for their contribution and to Bek Cardozo for putting together the signs and making them look so amazing. Our Marchers looked fantastic, and the judges thought so too by declaring us the PDNA March Past Winners for 2018. A great achievement for only our second season” she added.

The local club also had a surprise guest trainer, in the form of NSW Swifts GA Sophie Garbin. Garbin, who was a member of last year’s Australian Under 21 squad, trained the 15A Jivers team.

This was an amazing opportunity and experience for the girls that was organised by their coach Kathy.

An increase of 5 new teams from last year has seen the club secure more coaches and umpires. This has already seen an improvement in players and teams, with most teams securing wins in the first three weeks of competition. No doubt with continued improvement, they will see many more.

Under the expert guidance of Rebecca and Gail, their umpiring group are well on their way to achieving their goals too. This should see several of their umpires attain their district and even national badges this year.

Simple Joys of Life Lately, I’ve been listening to kids. No surprise there, because I work with kids. But, I mean really listening, deep listening.

And what has astonished me is that kids are so stressed.

We, adults, think that kids have things so easy these days.

They actually don’t. They have a lot of pressure that we would never have imagined as kids School is harder. Have a good look at the school curriculum some day.

There is a lot of pressure from parents to do well at everything.

Parents have high expectations of their children. Children have high expectations of themselves. This can lead to disappointment, anger, despair, and arguments.

Kids do lots of activities after school. They have a lot of chores.

There are life lessons to learn. There is hardly any down time. They use technology that isn’t play, it’s fast moving light and sound and information. I have seen 4 year-olds with FitBits (why does a young child need a FitBit?).

These kids don’t know how to slow down. They are uncomfortable with silence and space. They have trouble sitting still and taking slow deep breaths. They think that it’s a waste of time. They feel like they have to constantly be on the go and doing, doing, doing. They are addicted to light, speed, and sound.

They get bored easily. They think too much and worry a lot about lots of stuff.

Humans weren’t built that way. We need rest. Always doing and being creates stress. The stress hormone ‘cortisol’ is a nasty piece of work. It can cause physical and mental disease. It’s no wonder that the percentage of anxiety in children is increasing. One in four of our young people will develop clinical depression. That’s too sad. I’m not sure that any good comes of children aged 10, 11, and 12 years saying that they are stressed and depressed. And when they try to talk to their parents about it, the parents don’t listen and tell them how easy their lives are and how good they have it.

What are the juicy bits of life? The deep stuff – relationship, connection, talking, pondering, wondering, listening, looking, breathing. That stuff shouldn’t be saved for the annual family holiday. How can you bring the deep stuff into everyday life, and teach your kids the simple joys of life?

Winter Is Coming!!!

With the cooler weather arriving, it is important to make sure your pets are kept safe and comfortable as well.

Ensure that pets, especially those who spend a lot of time outdoors, are provided with shelter that will protect them from the cool and windy weather.

Provide a warm, sheltered area for your pet to sleep in – whether it is the laundry or inside the house as temperatures can drop dramatically during the night.

A wet coat can cause your pet’s body temperature to drop quickly, so in the case of wet weather or morning dew, keep your pets as dry as possible. Towel dry them after walks or when they come inside the house.

Consider a ‘winter’ haircut for pets who are groomed often, by not having their hair cut too short. Pets who have a short coat or are groomed often may also need a jacket or coat to help keep them warm.

Take extra care with pets who are really young or really old, as they may need extra assistance in regulating their body temperature.

Heaters and open fires can be dangerous to pets with the risk of overheating or burning. Ensure you supervise your pets, provide barricades or safety screens.

Along with frosty weather, comes the dreaded cold and flu. Most human drugs used to relieve our symptoms are toxic to pets.

These include, but are not limited to, Paracetamol (Panadol), Ibuprofen (Nurofen), Phenylephrine and Pseudoephedrine (Cold and Flu tablets). Keep your medications out of reach of your pets. Contact the veterinarian if your pet ingests human medications.

Well Winter has arrived.

Time to pull out your winter woollies, rug up and keep warm as the aroma of fresh home-made soup wafts through the home.

On page 6, you will find one of my winter go-to recipes. I’ve already made this a handful of times this year, such a simple yet hearty winter warmer.

Sadly, we farewelled my Mum last month. It was the single hardest thing I have ever had to face in my adult life.

I live on knowing she is no longer suffering, and can now breathe easy. I pay tribute and raise awareness of her courageous battle on page 8.

Friends have been an amazing tower of strength. If I’ve learned anything during this incredibly difficult time, it would be how to become a better friend. To be there unconditionally when times are tough (coincidentally, this was exactly who my Mum was). For these amazing friends I am truly grateful. You know who you are.
