Local Starts Online Book Club Like so many of us, selfisolating at home during the pandemic has given us the chance to pick up a book and start reading again. For local resident Jackie Russell, it was an opportunity to start a new book club to share with the community and Global Girls Online Book Club was formed.

“During the COVID-19 lockdown, I was reading so many books. I thought it would be great to share book recommendations and to discuss books with other people monthly. I set up the group in May and we now have 1,500 members. I never thought it would grow that quickly” explained Jackie to the Jordan Springs Gazette.

Each month, a book is chosen for the group to read. At the end of the month, they have a Zoom meeting to discuss the book together. With a dedicated Facebook group, members are also free to talk about all thing’s books online.

“Anyone who enjoys reading can join the group. If there is a lot of interest from the local community, that would be great as we hope to organise coffee meetups for those wanting to do so as another way to connect in the future” Jackie said.

“I think reading is important to keep your mind active and book clubs bring the social side to reading” she added.

Family’s Virtual Marathon in our own Backyard

As we all slowly return to the outdoors, a Ropes Crossing family has found the ideal way to keep fit and enjoy the surrounds by competing in a ‘virtual marathon’, the Brisbane Marathon Festival. Instead of running the race in Queensland, the Asher family have run around our local parks with support from the community.

Kathryn Asher took part in the Half Marathon (21.1km), whilst her children also raced. Her son James (8) competed in the Kids Marathon (5km) and daughter Sammy (5) in the Mini Marathon (2km). James and Sammy were happily supported by their father Michael, who ran with them for their events.

“It was a great experience for our family. We are all active and love being outdoors, so it gave us some extra motivation to train and stay fit and healthy during the whole pandemic” said Kathryn to the Jordan Springs Gazette.

The Asher’s hard work and dedication paid off, with all three members placing in the top 10. Kathryn came 3rd in the female 35-39 years group, James finishing 6th in the male under 14’s and Sammy 3rd in the female under 8’s.

Now that the family have their first virtual marathon under their belt, there are plans to compete in more.

“This was our first experience individually and as a family. I am currently recovering from surgery, but plan to get back into training as soon as possible. We all want to participate again in future live and/or virtual marathons. My husband Michael and I would like to run a full marathon (42.2km) together next year too” Kathryn explained.

For anyone wanting to compete in a virtual marathon, Kathryn and Michael give it two thumbs up.

“If you have some friends or family involved, it makes it so much more enjoyable. We had friends in Newcastle who participated, and it was great to send our training tips and final results through to them. New Shade Provisions for 90 Local Playgrounds Penrith Council is set to invest millions towards shade provisions for 90 playspaces within the City.

The three-year program, which commenced last month, will see Council upgrade 90 playspaces with trees and other shade structures.

The first playspaces to receive shade structures include Northridge Park in Jordan Springs and nearby at Grays Lane and Ellim Place Reserve and Grey Gums Oval in Cranebrook.

The program forms part of a shade assessment that was completed in 2019 as part of Council’s Shade Facilities at Playspaces Policy. The assessment noted 90 playspaces that required additional shade to enhance the experience for adults and children using the space while beating the heat during our summer months.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said playgrounds are at the heart of our neighbourhoods and should be accessible for everyone, all year round.

“With sun protection and UV radiation a major concern in Australia, we’re proud to have taken this important step in providing extra sun protection for our community” Cr Fowler said.

The shade structure works will take place on a rolling schedule and during normal business hours between Monday to Friday.

Residents will still be able to use the playspaces on weekends and public holidays.

The shade materials meet Australian Standards, provide specified UV blockout ratings between 97-99%, minimise heat conduction and allow appropriate airflow.

The tree planting program will be delivered during times of optimal growing conditions throughout the three-year period.

Not only will they provide a long-term shade solution, the trees will deliver additional benefits including biodiversity, habitat, and reduced noise pollution.

The project is part of Council’s Cooling the City strategy, designed to improve the liveability of our City and help us beat the heat.

Pedestrian Hit By Car; Man Charged - Llandilo A driver has been charged after a pedestrian was struck by a car in Sydney’s west last month.

About 10.50pm (Saturday 20 June 2020), emergency services were called to Fifth Avenue, Llandilo, about 10km north east of Penrith, after reports a man was allegedly struck by a Ford Focus while walking down the street.

The 41-year-old pedestrian suffered head and leg injuries and was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics, before being taken to Westmead Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Officers from Nepean Police Area Command established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit.

The provisional driver, a 19-year-old man, was subjected to a roadside breath test, which returned a negative result.

He was arrested and taken to Nepean Hospital for mandatory testing before being taken to Penrith Police Station.

Following inquiries, the Emu Heights man was charged with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm (drive manner dangerous) and negligent driving (occasioning grievous bodily harm). His licence was also suspended.

He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear before Penrith Local Court on Tuesday 14 July 2020.

Most humans like attention. Little humans particularly so.

They like attention so much that they don’t mind whether it’s negative or positive. They would much prefer positive attention as it is unpleasant to be in trouble all the time and not very good for one’s long-term mental health. But if they don’t get any of the good stuff, they will take the negative any day of the week.

But here is the trick…

40 years of research tells us that if you want to encourage positive behaviours in your child, you give more attention to positive behaviours. Energy flows where attention goes.

If you are paying lots of attention to ‘naughty’, you are going to get a bundle of ‘naughty’.

What would you prefer? Positive or negative behaviour?

Feed the positive with descriptive praise, connection, smiles, hugs, thumbs up, high fives – lots of positive attention.

So, what do you do about the negative behaviours? One strategy is called ‘planned ignoring’.

You ignore the minor negative behaviours. Completely withdraw your attention – no talking, no eye contact. As soon as (the split second) your child starts behaving in a positive way, you bring your attention back to your child.

No need for lectures or yakking. Chances are your child knows what he or she is doing. Truly, it’s that simple, pay attention to the positive and withdraw your attention from the negative.

However, if your child is exhibiting serious mistaken behaviour, planned ignoring is not the right tool for the job.

Jordan Springs Public School Opens

Premier Gladys Berejiklian, Education Minister Sarah Mitchell and Minister for Western Sydney Stuart Ayres recently visited the $50 million Jordan Springs Public School that will open its doors to students this month.

Jordan Springs Public School is one of 19 new and upgraded schools being built in Sydney’s north-west, which has seen enrolments grow by 24 per cent over the last five years.

“Even during a pandemic we have continued to build schools across NSW” Ms Berejiklian said.

“No matter where you live or what your circumstances are, all students deserve access to world class education.

“In the last 18 months, we have already opened eight of the 19 schools being built in Sydney’s north-west and another three are scheduled to open early next year”.

Ms Mitchell said Jordan Springs Public School is one of several new schools being built using innovative technology.

“For the first time in NSW, we’re harnessing a new way of building schools. Ninety-five per cent of the school is constructed off site reducing the on-site build time to weeks” Ms Mitchell said.

“The construction method will be used in select locations, meaning we can deliver new, high quality schools with minimal disruption to those communities”.

The construction model is currently being used for the new schools at Jordan Springs, on Farmland Drive near Alex Avenue at Schofields and in Catherine Field, Leppington and Wagga Wagga.

Mr Ayres said there is need for new schools in this area.

“The NSW Government is fast tracking infrastructure programs across the state” Mr Ayres said.

“These projects will provide jobs and boost the economy in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic”.

The new Jordan Springs Public School will provide 27 permanent classrooms, a school hall, a library, a covered outdoor learning area as well as administrative and staff facilities. It will have capacity for more than 1,000 students.

The NSW Government is investing $6.7 billion over four years to deliver more than 190 new and upgraded schools to support communities across NSW. Happy First Anniversary in the New Premises Can you believe that it has been one year since we moved premises to 49 Wentworth Road, Orchard Hills? Wow, time flies!

We have settled in well and are loving the new premises.

Our new premises are so beautiful with 3m ceilings, double brick throughout, green bull nosed verandahs and lots of open space on the acreage. You will not believe how big the premises are!

We even have a cat waiting room now, which is separate from the dogs, so your cat will be less stressed.

Unfortunately due to the Coronavirus crisis, we are still performing contactless consults, with the nurse bringing the pet into the hospital and the client waiting in the car. The veterinarians are

calling the client to discuss any health issues and to discuss the treatment plans.

The government restrictions are easing, however, as we work so closely together inside the hospital, we cannot be more than 1.5m apart from each other and if one of our staff becomes sick, then we will all become sick and we will have to close the business for 2 weeks or more. We have come so far, and we would hate to go backwards. We cannot wait for the Coronavirus crisis to be over!

Best in Show: Victoria Celebrates 40 Years What started out as a love of dogs as a child has turned into a successful career for local dog enthusiast Victoria Masterfield who this year celebrates 40 years of showing dogs.

Victoria will reach the amazing milestone later this year. Her career has taken her all over the world, where she has won many awards since the 1980’s. She also owns a small business, Comb and Collar – Grooming by Victoria.

“My parents showed dogs since I was young, and I grew up with a love of dogs. I first started showing dogs when I was a teenager. This shows my age, but I have been showing dogs for almost 40 years.

I specialise in American Cocker Spaniels and currently own 7 dogs. This includes 4 that live with me and I am in partnership with 3 more with my friends” explained Victoria to the Jordan Springs Gazette.

With so many highlights over the years, Victoria has won Best in Show awards and she is driven to win a very special one at home.

“Over my 40 years, I have won many Best in Show awards. My most memorable is the Dogs NSW Spring Fair, where it was the first time in history for an American Cocker Spaniel to win the show. My dream is to win Best in Show at Sydney Royal Easter Show” Victoria smiled.

Showing dogs can take months of preparation for the big day. Once it arrives, it is often a long day that can be quite rewarding at the end.

“The day starts early, prepping the dogs for the show. Washing, blow-drying, and scissoring in the morning before heading to the show early to get a good spot ringside and near my friends. This is followed by a quick blow-dry and scissoring before heading into the ring. If all goes well, I will show the dog 3 times. This is against it’s breed, then against other breeds, then fingers crossed the judge likes the dog and I win Best in Show” she said.

With restrictions being lifted and the world slowly returning to normal since the coronavirus pandemic, Victoria is looking forward to returning to the ring.

“I feel honoured and privileged to show dogs. I love travelling to places I have never seen, meeting new people, catching up with friends, being with my dogs and hopefully winning prizes” she ended. r

What has the life and death of a Palestinian Jew, some 2000 or more years ago, come to be of interest and concern in our day and generation? It is of interest because it is a life that was governed by an intense love for the people of his community.

An intense love to reawaken the need to make known that a higher love requires attention. In the Jewish Temple at Jerusalem, Jesus the Christ expected that it would remain place of prayer. Instead, it had become in his words ‘a den of thieves’.

Sadly, after some 70 years following his execution, the temple was sacked and destroyed by the army of the Roman Senate and the diaspora of the Jews became a reality.

The early followers of Jesus stunned by his execution, later came on reflection to recognise in his resurrection and ascension the spiritual temple had been restored. The spiritual temple that is one of prayer and worship by those who accept that in Jesus the Christ is life and that life will culminate in eternity in that higher Love.

Even amongst the followers of Jesus today, there is division and argument. In society at large, there is so much that continues to degrade the wonder of life. Nations and ideologies war against each other. Yet basic amongst all this is the genuine desire of people for real peace and a positive and purposeful life. But time and time again, everyday life can become a hell. Why so? Is it not because there is the failure to recognise the awesome effects of selfishness, both individually and nationally, that shuts out and fails to implement the most powerful force of all: the ability to love. This love is not idealistic: it is a reality that can transform. Jesus is of interest and concern for today.

What's Happening @

Jordan Springs Probus Club A little light at the end of the tunnel in June with pubs, clubs and restaurants opening for business - all be it with some limitations. We are looking to recommence our “second Tuesday of the month” lunch at local eateries and are hopeful of a July start.

Community Halls had a limited reopening in June, and we are looking forward to a July restart for our monthly meetings, under social distancing limitations. Our major challenge will be re-establishing the featured speakers for the remainder of the year.

The committee continues to plan for the eventual lifting/ relaxing of restrictions and the return to a more normal monthly agenda. This ensures members can look forward to an exciting program featuring interesting guest speakers, monthly meetings, the opportunity to travel locally or around the world and enjoy exclusive discounts through the Probus Member Benefits Scheme including access to exclusive Probus Travel Insurance, developing new interests and staying active. Future planned events for the coming twelve months will include Watsons Bay for lunch, Mudgee Getaway Cottages (4 nights), Bundeena Ferry and lunch, Camden Historic Tour (coach) and planning is continuing towards an interstate trip.

The Jordan Springs Probus Club normally meets at the Jordan Springs Community Hub on the 4th Tuesday of every month, at 9:30am for a 10:00am start.

July has arrived and it is bitterly cold. As I write this, my feet are snug in slipper sox by the heater.

We are making slow progress, one day at a time, with the relaxing of restrictions due to COVID-19. This month sees the reinstatement of team sports, and increased numbers in group gatherings with steady increases at pubs, clubs and restaurants.

We’ve also witnessed some setbacks in neighbouring States, which has caused some trepidation in further releasing of restrictions.

If you’re anything like me, I’ve used the time in isolation wisely by working on mini projects that I seemingly ‘never’ had time for before this.

Coming out of time in ‘lockdown’ sees my freshly renovated caravan at the ready for many a trip, particularly relevant due to the current state of play with restrictions on travel and the delayed reopening of the borders.

The perfect excuse to ‘holiday at home!’. It’s time to become a tourist in your own backyard.

We are fortunate to be at the foothills of some amazing hidden gems...... time to explore!
