Melaleuca Village Lake And Play Space Come To Life At Jordan Springs

Lendlease was joined by representatives from Penrith City Council and Muru Mittigar Aboriginal Cultural & Education Centre at the public opening of the Melaleuca Village Lake and Play Space last month, a new public space at Jordan Springs inspired by the natural beauty of the Wianamatta Regional Park.

The opening was held as part of National Reconciliation Week 2017 and acknowledged the Traditional Owners’ connection to land, water and community with a smoking ceremony, storytelling, a dance performance, Indigenous food tasting and native animal display.

Celebrating National Reconciliation Week is a key action of Lendlease’s Reconciliation Action Plan with a focus on strengthening and maintaining relationships between Lendlease’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees and other employees and building relationships with local communities.

Arthur Ilias, Lendlease Communities General Manager NSW/ACT, said it was wonderful to celebrate the proud heritage of Australia’s first people as part of the opening of Melaleuca Village Lake and Play Space.

“Jordan Springs is set to become one of Western Sydney’s most picturesque suburbs and, with Melaleuca Village Lake, we’ve created a beautiful recreation space that everyone can enjoy.

With these words Jesus the Christ, challenges us to consider their implication. The law and the Prophets have a long history in Semitic religion, taking us a long way back, in some instance prehistory.

Zoroaster was born into a polytheistic world, the Buddha emerged from another polytheism which was strongly tied to pantheism, Confucius based much of his teaching on animism.

Mohammed emerged in a society of Jewish and Christian teaching. But Jesus came, a prophet and became recognized as more than a prophet: He is the Messiah. He lived not by rule but by instinct of one whose communion with God was never broken.

In his life, death, resurrection and ascension the living power and presence of God the Father became reality.

Since his day there has been a constant and growing field of knowledge which when applied to life gives guidelines to the purpose of life [ with all its ‘ups and downs’]. The Christian is able to absorb or adopt any truth met elsewhere in the search to understand.

In the early days of Christianity, Christ was understood and measured by the received law held by and developed by, the Jewish people with their long history of Semitic faith. As Christianity developed the realization came that the law had to be seen by the application of Jesus’ example.

The Christian answers that the Omega point is now and that in Christ there is an influence on life and the universe that is someone as shown to us by Jesus the Christ. Local mother and musician, Helen Pallis felt the despair of witnessing her son, Matthew, struggle through his early adult years. As a child, Matthew’s difficulties were put down to other factors and it was not until he was in his late 20s that Matthew was diagnosed as having Asperger‘s Syndrome. Asperger’s Syndrome, now known under the term Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a neuro-developmental condition that affects how the brain processes information.

Helen explained, “Matthew found it hard to communicate with friends at work, be in crowds and understand why physical sounds and touch like plastic bags freaked him out. He would panic in malls and public places. He didn’t understand when people smiled at him and always thought they were out to rip him off, so he didn’t trust anyone and could not articulate what he was trying to say to them or what was being said to him. His school days were a very difficult time and work environment was tough as he was a fish out of water. Matt and I struggled along for years alone.”

After the diagnosis, everything made sense, but accepting it and moving forward was still a struggle. Following a short stint in hospital where Matthew and Helen were given the support they needed, Helen decided that she wanted to help other adults with Asperger’s Syndrome who are struggling. She is piloting a series of ‘Brighter Day Workshops’ for those who have been diagnosed with ASD as an adult. The workshops will focus on life skills, recognising facial cues, cooking and music.

Helen’s aim is to create a safe and calm atmosphere whereby participants feel a sense of community and make lifelong friends that understand each other.

So, ‘prejudice’ means that we judge someone before we get to know them.

When I asked the kids at school what they feel other kids judge them on, they said… "skin colour, being smart, being quiet, being chubby or skinny, being tall or short, race, clothing, religion, disability, stereotypes, mental health, special interests, appearance."

That’s a lot of prejudice! And prejudice can lead to teasing, exclusion, misunderstanding, and in extreme cases, bullying.

When we are busy pointing out difference, we become blind to the ways we are the same. This deprives us of the opportunity to get along with others and learn from each other.

We have also been talking about the concept of fairness.

Fairness is not everyone having the same. That’s actually not possible. A child who gets around in a wheelchair will always need a ramp. A child with autism or ADHD may need some learning support. They are getting something extra than everyone else in order to give them the same opportunities as other children. That’s life, and it’s a good lesson for children to learn.

So, how do we get to know someone? A good conversation may include: introducing yourself; complimenting the other person on something; asking questions (in moderation); finding common interests; being a good listener; introducing other topics; ending the conversation in a friendly manner (say it was nice talking to them, suggest talking later, offer to play).

It’s good to have a conversation with kids about this sort of stuff – prejudice, fairness, getting to know others. Sometimes kids are unintentionally judging or excluding other children because they are not aware of what they are doing. That causes a lot of unnecessary hurt, sadness, anger, and misunderstanding.

It makes it easier to support kids to learn new skills and behaviours when you have raised their awareness of these concepts. I love teaching kids, in gentle ways, how to think beyond themselves, stretching them to think and grow and learn. It helps to make people who know better and do better.

Melaleuca Village Lake And Play Space Come To Life At Jordan Springs

communities of Jordan Springs and Jordan Springs East and is connected by kilometres of pedestrian and cycling paths.

“Nestled in a grove of spotted gums, the play space is for kids of all ages and abilities and includes trampolines, swings, water play, two tree houses with climbing nets, viewing decks and a slide,” said Mr Ilias.

More than 160 trees have been planted around the lake and play space, with many of the species reflecting those of the Cumberland Plain Woodland and found within the adjoining Wianamatta Regional Park. The abundance of native vegetation creates an instant visual appeal and habitat for birds and animals.

Melaleuca Village Lake, the second lake in Jordan Springs, also plays an important sustainability role in the community by helping to manage stormwater and protecting natural waterways in Wianamatta Regional Park.

Local Charity Committed to Saving Lives on our Roads

Since launching in 2015, local charity the Blue Datto Foundation has been rapidly expanding with its youth-focused road safety education program striking a chord with participants and the wider community.

In March, Blue Datto’s Keeping Safe™ program, that aims to help young drivers develop positive attitudes and behaviours on our roads, was named best School Program at the 2017 Australian Road Safety Awards.

The accolade coincides with the charity’s growth into regions outside of Western Sydney.

“We’ve worked really hard to develop a program that has a lasting impact on participants and the feedback we’re getting is really encouraging,” said Blue Datto’s Co-Founder Colleen Vassallo, who tragically lost her 17-year old son Philip in a crash in 2014.

“Despite all the improvements in safety and technology the first five years on the road continue to be the most dangerous period for any driver and too many lives are being lost,” she said.

Last year Australia had a 7.9 per cent increase in road deaths compared to 2015, however specifically in the 17-25 age bracket road fatalities increased by 17.3 per cent.

“The safety of our children isn’t something we can take for granted. We’ve made great progress but there’s a long way to go.”

In hope of reaching more young people this year, Blue Datto is promoting its Keeping Safe™ program to sports and community groups with members in the 15-18 age bracket.

Keeping Safe™ is evidence based and aims to change the attitudes of young drivers before they get behind the wheel, using near ‘Peer Mentors’ and interactive activities to show participants the consequences of their actions, and help them devise safer strategies to reduce their risk as a driver and passenger.

The school holidays are a great time for children to relax, connect with relatives and enjoy some freedom from their studies. It seems that parents of primary school-aged children either dread the holidays or love them. For some, the winter break is a chance to escape the daily grind and hit the ski slopes. For those who stay home, it can often be a struggle to keep children entertained whilst managing the fighting, complaints of boredom and obsession with electronic devices.

Here are 5 budget-friendly suggestions to maintain your sanity and occupy your children these holidays: 1. Visit your local library and stock up on some interesting books, magazines, DVDs and CDs. Try to find some cookbooks with recipes you can cook together and audiobooks that your children can listen to on their own as a quiet time activity.

2. Invite friends or cousins over for playdates and/or sleepovers. These experiences give your children the social interaction they need and the added benefit is that although you have an extra child in your house, it somehow seems less hectic. Don’t believe me? Try and see for yourself.

3. Organising craft activities might sound like a lot of effort but you would be surprised at how engaging pipe cleaners, toilet rolls, sticky tape and boxes can really be. Set your children a specific design task or let them impress you with their imagination.

4. Go for a skate, scoot or ride to your local park to encourage your children to burn off some energy. Take snacks and a thermos of coffee and enjoy relaxing outside in the fresh winter air.

5. Be organised and involve your children in planning activities. Enjoy the opportunity to spend some quality time together and most importantly, make sure you schedule in some lazy pyjama days.

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith welcomes the news that work started last month on the $3.6 million intersection upgrade of Andromeda Drive and The Northern Road at Cranebrook to improve safety.

“Work has started on the project to install new traffic lights at the intersection to provide motorists with safer turning opportunities into and out of the residential area,” said Stuart Ayres.

“The project aims to reduce the number and severity of crashes at this intersection and includes widening the southbound lane on The Northern Road heading towards Penrith and upgrading the footpath,” said Stuart Ayres.

“Night work will be carried out between 8pm and 5am, excluding Saturdays with day work to be carried out from 7am to 6pm and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays.

Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions and follow the direction of signs and traffic control.

Penrith Wins Big From Soaring NSW Budget Result Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith has welcomed the release of the 2017-18 NSW State Budget that sees the government continuing to deliver for the people of Penrith Last month’s Budget will continue record levels of investment in infrastructure like hospitals, schools, roads and public transport, laying the foundations for communities across Penrith and New South Wales to flourish.

“Penrith is a big winner in this budget.” said Stuart Ayres “This budget is seeing massive capital investments in our local schools and Nepean Hospital and includes critical upgrades to Northern and Mulgoa roads that will ensure our arterial roads expand as our community grows,” said Stuart Ayres.

“Our Active Kids Rebate will put $100 per school aged child back in the pocket of every parent who plays sport in Penrith.

“This budget demonstrates that Penrith truly does benefit from strong economic management. After being forgotten

by Labor for years, the Liberal Government knows just how important Penrith is,” Stuart Ayres said.

Key projects in Penrith funded in the 2017-18 budget include: • $576 million for the major upgrade of Nepean Hospital • A new hall at Kingswood High School • A brand new Public School at Jordan Springs • Major upgrades to Penrith Public and Claremont Meadows Public Schools • $252 million for new intercity fleet trains • $485.2 million to continue building the Northern Road upgrade • $13.4 million to progress the Jane Street and Mulgoa Road upgrade • Funding to install lights at Ross Street and Great Western Highway intersection at Glenbrook

I quite like July. I love any excuse to pop a pair of fluffy socks on, nestled into my favourite lounge with my toes strategically placed in front of the heater.

Not only is July the month I celebrate my birthday (although as I age gracefully, its less likely I need to be reminded); I also enjoy all the wonderful hearty winter soups that grace the dinner table during these colder months.

July is a busy month for many. For families with school kids at home during the winter holidays, for business owners as they tidy up their end of financial year commitments and reporting; and for the community with many ‘winter’ social events to keep us entertained in our down time.
