Village Café Is Back For 2020 Village Café returns for 2020 in Kingswood, North St Marys and Llandilo once a month on a Thursday from 9.30am to 11.30am. Locals are encouraged to come along for a free baristamade coffee, take home some fresh fruit and vegetables and enjoy connecting with neighbours and local service providers.

Village Café will be open at Wainright Park in Kingswood every second Thursday of the month, Wattle Avenue Reserve in North St Marys every third Thursday of the month and at Llandilo Community Hall in Llandilo every fourth Thursday of the month.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said he was very excited to see the café return for 2020.

“This fantastic project is more than a pop-up café – it’s a friendly, safe space for people living in Kingswood, North St Marys and Llandilo to meet up, have a chat over a good cup of coffee, and connect with local services,” Cr Fowler said.

“We want to find out what residents would like to see at Village Café and support our communities to feel stronger and better connected. If you have ideas for how Village Café can best support your community’s wellbeing, please don’t hesitate to contact our Neighbourhood Renewal Team,” he said.

Ever since I can remember, I have had a love for radio. As a child I used to dream of sitting in a studio and conducting my own program. I would regularly go, as part of the audience, to watch shows being recorded seeing many of the stars of yesterday. Eventually my dream was realised and I was given the opportunity to move to the country to work on the local station.

That love has remained, and over the years I have stayed with radio both commercial and our local community station.

I have been fascinated since the advent of the internet and the many opportunities offered via that medium. A big part of the internet is music and generally people are turning to the internet for their music entertainment.

Whist there are quite a few internet stations operating, these aim their music at the younger audience. I felt that there was a hole to be filled, so Reminiscing Music was put together to fill that void. It offers listeners the music that they grew up with and the music they love. Have You Given Any Thought To Your Parenting Goals This Year?

We set personal goals and work goals. We watch lifestyle shows on the television or scan social media to get ideas about how we want to make changes to our home and garden. We make holiday plans.

How often do we take stock of what is happening within our family? What is going well? What could we do better? What are our family’s values and how do we communicate and role model our values to and for our children? With parenting we often fall into autopilot mode. We fall into familiar ways of interacting and behaving.

Humans are social and emotional beings. The foundation for our health and wellbeing is connection and belonging. Family can provide the most important and satisfying relationships that we will ever experience, or the most damaging. The difference between establishing and maintaining constructive or destructive relational patterns is intention and reflection.

Intention is staying focused on what we want to achieve.

Reflection is thinking about what went well and what we could do better next time. This can be such hard work but it can be achieved with small and consistent change. The effort requires kindness – with yourself and others. Kind enough to allow for mistakes and to learn from them. It also requires bravery – being brave enough to try again and keep going. Kindness and bravery go hand in hand.

I recently came across the concept of ‘Ubuntu’ which is a Southern African word meaning “I am because we are”. That rings true for our children and for ourselves. In a TEDX talk by Dozie Okeleke (https://youtube/vBUy7XmbB7M) he quotes an African saying “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”.

And so it goes when we are interacting with our children. For example, if we are nagging or yelling at our child, and the child becomes belligerent, we may get frustrated with the child’s behaviour. Reflecting on this situation – what do we want to achieve and what is the most effective way to manage it that honours the people involved and the family as a whole? What have your child and you learnt from the experience?

The wait is almost over for thousands of children across the country, as they prepare for the start of one of the most important journeys of their life – starting school. Five-year-old Amaya Heffernan, from Jordan Springs, is all ready to go to start Kindergarten at Henry Fulton Public School this year.

Amaya, who is the older sister to one-year-old Delaney, can’t hide her excitement for starting big school! She is looking forward to doing science lessons, work in her school books and learning how the world works.

She enjoys playing cricket, playing at the kid’s club at her Mum’s gym, learning about anything to do with space and, most of all, she loves books. She may not be able to read on her own yet, but she enjoys listening to stories being read and exploring books on her own.

“We have been preparing Amaya for school in various ways.

We have been discussing how the school environment will work and the expectations of her as a kindy student. This includes making sure that she knows how to complete all the self-help tasks that will make her life at school easier, such as how to put on her shoes herself, unzip and zip her jacket and open her own food packets” explained Ambere Heffernan, Amaya’s Mum. The anticipation of our children starting school can also be a nervous time for parents. Mums and Dads have also been known to shed a tear or two as they wave goodbye on that first day.

“As a primary school teacher myself, I am used to being there for all the new students starting kindergarten. Reassuring the children and their parents that they will be fine and that feeling emotional about it all is totally normal and okay. Now I will be on the opposite side of this. I will be the one dropping my first baby off to her first day of ‘big school’ and getting a tear in my eye. It will be a little surreal, but I am confident that she’s going to take to it like a duck to water” reflected Ambere.

Amaya has set her sights on being a scientist and playing professional cricket for the Sydney Thunder when she finishes school. You could say she’s reaching for the stars!

“We are happy that Amaya will attend school here in the local area, so she can be with some her current friends. Her school has somewhat of a rural feel to it. Local’s Vision for New Skate Park Local resident and Father Russell Stubbs has started a petition to have a skate park built at Ropes Crossing. The petition has already gathered some community support, with the hope that it can be brought to the attention of Blacktown City Council.

“Whilst visiting Jamisontown Skate Park, I met two young scooter riders from Ropes Crossing and thought how hard it can be for parents when travelling to parks that aren’t close to home. Wouldn’t it be better to have a local spot for children to go to?” said Russell.

“Late last year, I started a petition for a skate park to be built in Ropes Crossing and was surprised that it reached over 100 signatures in 24 hours! A new skate park would give the kids somewhere to go and socialise, learn new tricks or develop their skills. I remember I used to live at the bike track/skate park as a young man and it gave me something positive and fun to put my energy into” he continued.

The petition now has just over 200 signatures. Russell doesn’t have an end goal, but he believes that if it were to reach 1,000 signatures, it may get the attention of the right people.

“The petition was really just to see how popular the idea was, and so far, it seems quite popular amongst the young families in the area.

I would love to be involved in designing the park because I have been into skating for a lot of years and would be able to give suggestions that would make it more enjoyable and safer” Russell announced.

He has earmarked two possible sites for the skate park in Ropes Crossing. The first is near the oval and basketball courts on the corner of Lawler Street and Guild Place, whilst the second is near the BBQ and play area off Ferdinand Crescent and Woolls Crescent.

“I think it would be great for the community because it would help get kids and even their parents outside enjoying a fun and free activity in the sun. It could also bring everyone closer together” he finished.

ow Open N At long last and after a few false starts, Ropes Crossing

Community Garden finally broke ground late last year. With help and support from their foundation partners Laing & Simmons Ropes Crossing, Parklea Sand and Soil and Coles Ropes Crossing, they came together to build their first three garden beds.

‘It was fantastic to see the community come out to support us, with people donating their time and energy to help us as well as garden supplies such as mulch, garden canes, plants, seeds, hoses and more” said Ropes Crossing Community Garden’s Julian Munford.

The community garden is located next to the BBQs within the grounds of Ropes Crossing Community Hub on Pulley Drive. Their goal is to bring together the community members of Ropes Crossing through gardening, sharing expertise, learning about permaculture and having fun together.

To get the garden started, they’ve planted some fastgrowing fruits and vegetables like zucchinis, egg plants, tomatoes, pumpkins, melons, capsicums, basil, chillies, onions and some citrus plants to name a few.

They now meet monthly on the 1st Sunday of each month at 4:00pm at the garden and everyone is welcome to come along and have a cup of tea and a chat.

Each kitten has a health check by a veterinarian to ensure they are healthy.

They have had their first vaccination, been desexed, microchipped and have a product called Advocate applied, which controls fleas, intestinal worms and heartworm. We also worm them for tapeworms.

There are two particular themes within Christian teaching: one is ‘sin’ and the other ‘salvation’. Over the centuries, a great deal of study has been directed and continues towards understanding human behaviour. The concept is that genetics plays a role, the situation which the individual is placed and the political and social forces that are experienced are aspects as one grows in life.

The question of freewill is still debated and remains an open question. Out of this learning, the concept of sin still holds ground. Sin is simply the reality that human behaviour, both individual and collective, can depreciate, destroy and manipulate the good. Sin is the downside of humanity.

Christian teaching finds an emphasis on the life and work of Jesus, the Christ summed up in the word ‘salvation’. The word itself comes from the Latin and carries the meaning to make ‘whole’: to allow constructive human behaviour.

In the New Testament writings, salvation is grounded in the belief that Jesus was a life that was ‘whole’, so that his life is not a tale told by an idiot. Life is when, both individually and collectively, it is declared we live, but this is because in all things it is done in Christ Jesus. As such, by growing in Christ Jesus progressively, salvation is achieved.

Sickness, disease, death, wars, natural disasters etc. can take their toll but the ‘whole’ (the full reality) is achievable and governed by hope and the conviction that Jesus the Christ is our Saviour. Living within this context, life takes on a new and richer perspective and allows speculation on the questions “who am I?” and “what is community?”.

An important note is to be careful that individualism is not over-stressed as it can break down the recognition that humanity is a corporate whole: the family of human beings.

Jordan Springs Probus Club

The Club was formed under the Probus values of supporting and promoting Friendship, Fellowship and Fun in retirement.

We welcome new members from Jordan Springs and surrounding suburbs.

As we start the new year, we welcome back our existing members and invite any interested parties along to one of our meetings to experience a warm and welcoming social group in the local area.

We kicked off the year with our monthly lunch at the Colonial Hotel, Werrington, with about 30 people turning up for an enjoyable meal and social catch up. The speaker at the January meeting was from the local U3A, advising of their aims and courses available in the area.

The February 25th meeting has a guest speaker from Guardian Funerals talking on services they provide including pre-paid offerings.

Members can look forward to an exciting program featuring interesting guest speakers, monthly meetings, the opportunity to travel locally or around the world and enjoy exclusive discounts through the Probus Member Benefits Scheme including access to exclusive Probus Travel Insurance, developing new interests and staying active. Planned events for the year include Mudgee Getaway Cottages (4 nights), Bundeena Ferry and lunch, Camden Historic Tour (coach) and planning is continuing towards an interstate trip.

The Jordan Springs Probus Club meets at the Jordan Springs Community Hub on the 4th Tuesday of every month, 9:30am for a 10:00am start.
