Anything is Possible with Stuart Jordan Springs resident Stuart Brooks has achieved so much in his martial arts career. He currently holds an 8th Degree Red Sash in Hung Su Shaolin Temple Boxing, a 7th Degree in Intsia Bijuga Eagle Boxing (Eagle Claw Kung Fu) and a 3rd Degree in Meke Ni Vala. The one that has eluded him was a black belt in karate, however, after a journey that first began six and a half years ago, he has now attained this.

The martial arts instructor achieved his 1st Dan Black Belt in Budo Ryu Kempo last month and now has 19 Degrees over 4 systems of martial arts.

Attaining his black belt in karate involved a gruelling 7-hour test, covering all aspects of martial arts, including basic techniques, self-defence, 2 person sets, kata (pre-arranged sets), teaching skills and sparring (free fighting).

“Achieving this was a personal milestone as it was a challenge that I set myself after my father passed away. It was sort of like a bucket list thing” said Stuart.

Stuart now hopes to continue his Budo Ryu Kempo journey and would like to work towards a 2nd Dan, as well as passing on his knowledge through his school – Shaolin Martial Arts Centre.

“Age is definitely no barrier. I completed my black belt with two torn ligaments in my knee. It comes down to your mental state. My oldest student is 72 and he is a 6th Degree Red Sash and he started in his 50’s. Remember, it’s your journey, do it at your pace. Martial arts is for everyone” he ended.

The month of December commences the Christian year and is known as the season of Advent. The worship and prayers during this season are directed to two major themes: the birth of Jesus, who later was to be recognised as the Messiah and the future culmination of all life and the universe in the judgement of the Creator. Solid thoughts, but once encountered, provide not only individual but also society as a whole a powerful and invigorating life.

The birth of Jesus challenges the question “Who do you think I am” given by Jesus to his early followers. In relation to the long history and the incomprehensible universe that we continually strive to comprehend, the birth of Jesus is late within the known time frame. However, to the Christian it becomes the realty that the creator is made known in the man Jesus. Just as the early followers came to realise that in Jesus there is more than ‘just’ man, so today we worship the Holy trinity: God in Christ Jesus through the Holy Spirit.

On Christmas Eve at Saint David’s at 11:00pm, a traditional service of carols and readings from Scripture is held prior to the midnight service for Holy Communion (the Christ Mass). This outlines the long history from Abraham to the birth of Jesus giving abundant premise for contemplation and consideration all directed to being able to say that Jesus is Emmanuel (God with us).

Modern astronomers argue that eventually the universe as we know it will come to an end. Others argue that the expansion of the universe will continue. To the Christian, however, the conviction that all things will be summed up in Christ with the universe either ending by implosion or explosion or continuing to expand will be caught up in the wonderful reality that what has been created will be renewed and heaven become a reality.

Name Change Update On 22 November 2019, the formal suburb name change for the Central Precinct of the St Marys Release Area changed from Llandilo to Jordan Springs.

What do I need to do?

The most important thing to do if you are in the expansion area is to make sure that everyone with whom you are in contact is aware of the change.

Emergency Services will be formally notified, but it will take a while for other service providers to be informed. Just like when you move house, you have to make sure all those you do business with know your new address.

What area is changing?

The Central Precinct is currently located in the rural suburb of Llandilo, a historic arrangement that existed prior to the development of the release area. The proposed suburb arrangements will result in the expansion of the existing suburb of Jordan Springs to include the Central Precinct, the surrounding areas of open space, and Wianamatta Regional Park.

Has my postcode changed?

Only the name of the suburb you live in has changed. The postcode (2747) stays the same, as do the street names and suburb layout.

Why are the changes being implemented?

The development of the Central Precinct is underway but new suburb arrangements were not settled prior to development commencing. The current arrangement, with no road connecting Llandilo to the Central Precinct, is causing confusion for residents, visitors and the emergency and postal services. It is also affecting property valuations and insurance arrangements.

These issues have triggered the need to consider new suburb naming arrangements.

Who is the authority for Suburb Names and Boundaries?

Under the Geographical Names Act 1966, the Geographical Names Board (GNB) is responsible for assigning suburb names, determining their extent and publishing their details in the NSW Government Gazette.

The role of Local Government in suburb naming and boundary changes is to communicate proposals with residents, request submissions and comments, review submissions and provide information for Council elected representatives to make an informed decision. Resolutions of Council are then provided to the Geographical Names Board for them to make a final decision on proposals.

My name is Kobhi and I am 10 years old. I love to help my Mum and Dad cook yummy food in the kitchen.

Each month, I will share with you some of my favourite recipes. Oh yeah, make sure you always have an adult helping you cook.

Mini Christmas Puddings

Ingredients

One chocolate mud cake White chocolate (buds) One packet of raspberry lollies Method

1. You need a chocolate mud cake that is already made from the shops. Use a teaspoon to scoop the mud cake, like ice cream. Roll the mud cake into little balls.

2. Ask your helper to cut up a packet of raspberry lollies into small pieces.

3. Put the white chocolate into a microwave bowl. This next step is for your helper too, which is melting the chocolate. They need to reduce the power on the microwave to medium. Heat the white chocolate in the microwave for 30 - 90 seconds.

4. Remove the bowl from the microwave. Your helper needs to mix the white chocolate. It should be soft and not hard. Use a spoon to dab on little bits on to the top of the balls of chocolate mud cake. It looks like white frosting.

5. Put the cut up raspberry lollies on top of the white chocolate on the mud cake balls.

6. The mini Christmas puddings need to go in the fridge for an hour, until it sets.

7. Ready to serve.

Santa Claus is getting ready to leave the North Pole this month and he plans to make a very special trip to join the Llandilo Rural Fire Brigade for their Santa Run to Jordan Springs and Llandilo.

Pending the operational requirements of the brigade and their crew, the Santa Run will visit Jordan Springs in December, beginning in the morning where the fire truck will visit various local parks. It will continue again on Christmas Eve in Llandilo.

It’s a great opportunity to come and say hi to Santa and take photos. Santa will have lollies onboard for the kids and can only be at each park for 15 minutes as it is his busy time of year.

“With the current fire season upon us, our crew has already been quite busy with callouts. We’ve asked Santa if he can bring some cool weather with him from the North Pole” said Rick Burns, Captain of Llandilo Rural Fire Brigade.

Captain Rick has been a member of the RFS at Llandilo for many years and he always looks forward to this festive time of the year and the cheer that it creates amongst the local community.

“The smiles that we see on the kid’s faces when Santa turns up in the fire truck is priceless. Christmas is a special time of the year and to know that we can bring some of that festive spirit to the community is amazing” he said.

Supper with Spirit a Success!

Last month the District Gazette hosted their first ever fundraising event, Supper With Spirit, raising money for Lung Foundation Australia.

Guests enjoyed an evening of delight as Ghost Whisperer Suzie used her spiritual gift of psychic mediumship to relay messages to loved ones. It was an emotional night full of laughing, crying and of course, coming together to support a great cause.

The night was also an opportunity to raise awareness of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), which is a rare lung disease in which the tissue around the air sacs within the lungs become thickened and scarred. This scarring makes the lungs stiff which makes it increasingly difficult to breathe. This slows the efficient delivery of oxygen into the bloodstream where it is needed to be transported to the rest of the body. Idiopathic, suggests ‘no known cause’ and currently there is no cure for those suffering with IPF. There were many winners on the night with over $2,000 worth of prizes generously donated by Citadines Connect Sydney Airport, The Day Spa Penrith – Jorja James Spa, Salt Therapy Wellness Centre, Emu Wellness, NIX on Park Lane Jewelry, Elsker Oils with Julie, Aussie Grown Catering, Michal Gabriel Beauty and Brow, Our Penrith, Lavilin Australia, Michelle Munday (Lorraine Lea Independent Stylist), Essential Bodyworks and Action Organising.

Council is holding a free recycling drop off week

6pm at Jamison Park. We are accepting normal household items such as glass bottles and jars, milk and juice cartons, paper and cardboard, plastic bottles and containers, and steel and aluminium cans. *The week excludes public holidays and the weekend.

Council is providing extra bin collections for two weeks to help with the additional waste and recycling produced over Christmas and New Year’s Eve. During the weeks highlighted, place all bins on the kerbside the night before your normal collection day.

Collections will run late into the night, so please do not bring your bins in until they have been emptied.

How do you handle Holiday Season?

December can be a time of stress and overwhelm - parties, school assemblies, awards nights and shopping. Everyone gets tired and this can lead to frayed tempers and impatience.

About 6 weeks out from Christmas we can sometimes hear parents say, “if you aren’t good, you won’t get any Christmas presents”.

That’s tricky for the following reasons: • Do you really mean it? Are you going to follow through and not give your child any Christmas presents? It’s probably an empty threat (and the kids know it).

• The consequence is not immediate enough.

• The consequence probably isn’t related to the mistaken behaviour.

• What does ‘good’ or ‘nice’ mean? It’s too vague.

All the above can lead to an escalation of mistaken behaviour, which can make everyone’s life more difficult.

The holiday season is supposed to be a time of kindness, peace and goodwill. You are allowed to take some time to breathe and enjoy. This includes giving your kids and yourself some downtime to reduce the overwhelm.

Deal with your children’s behaviour in a calm and assertive manner. Tell them what they are doing wrong (for example, “you are yelling at your sister”) and what to do instead (for example, “speak kindly and calmly”).

Deal with your child’s behaviour at the time that it occurs and give a consequence that is related to the mistaken behaviour (for example, take away the toy that the children are fighting over).

Give an instruction a maximum of two times. The more times you ask, the greater the risk that you will get frustrated. If the child does not comply after two requests, you can issue a consequence (related to the behaviour of course).

Another year is over. It’s a cliché but it’s true – treasure the moments you have with your kids. They will be adults one day, and you will wonder where the time went. You owe it to yourself and your kids to make the time as positive as possible.

Get the undesirable behaviour over and done with quickly so you have more fun and times of connection. In the end, that’s all that really matters.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day

What a special day it was at The Lakes Christian College last month, when so many grandparents and special friends came to the school to be part of the education of their students. Almost 200 guests attended the special assembly and were entertained with a variety of musical items.

As part of the celebrations, the students participated in Music Count Us In Australia’s largest school initiative. It is the education program of Music Australia, working with partners around the country to support music in schools. Music Count Us In plays a vital role in fostering music education in schools, with a presence in every state and territory in the country. It is internationally recognised as the world’s largest school music initiative.

The program culminates in the National Celebration Day when more than half a million students sing the same song, on the same day, at the same time. It is a song written by students and for students. Primary students at The Lakes Christian College (almost 200) taught by Mrs Bell, had learnt this year’s song ‘We Are’ and created various arrangements to accompany their performance. Classes played percussion instruments that included boomwhackers, chime bars, recorders and glockenspiels and year 6 composed their own bucket drumming arrangement.

After the assembly, guests visited classrooms and joined in on activities with their children. The children also enjoyed sharing morning tea with their families. Chloe’s Dream Continues After recently being crowned the 2019 Miss Junior of Australia, Ropes Crossing’s Chloe Zrebiec has continued her beauty pageant success, after being named the first runner up in the National Australian Miss Program and winning the title of National Australian Miss Teen.

Chloe walked away with the national title, taking home a crown and sash. The pageant was held on the 10th of November at St Marys and it was directed by local Kim Cancellier.

“We are all very proud of Chloe and her win. It was great to see her enter a local pageant. What's Happening @ Jordan Springs Probus Club

December sees us looking forward to the Christmas Season with family and friends. As our normal meeting would run a little close to Christmas day, we will not be holding a December meeting for 2019. Our next General Meeting is scheduled for the fourth Tuesday in January which is Tuesday 28th at the normal 10:00am start.

As the year draws to a close, we can look back on a successful 2019. The membership has grown steadily over the 12 months and is currently running above 30. We had an entertaining and varied list of activities this year with regular monthly lunches, visits to local shows, an overnight coach trip to Canberra taking in Floriade and tulip tops, day trips to local gardens in the area and “public transport” day trips to Sydney Harbour, including ferry trips around the harbour. Our Christmas lunch for this year is at the Camden Valley Inn, featuring a Christmas feast and live entertainment.

We are preparing an exciting program in 2020. It will feature interesting guest speakers, monthly meetings, the opportunity to ENTER CODE travel locally or around the world and enjoy exclusive discounts through the Probus MemberONLINE: Benefits Scheme including access ONLINEBDGAZ to exclusive Probus Travel Insurance, developing new interests and staying active.

Planning is nearly completed for a six-day getaway to Mudgee and is continuing towards an interstate trip probably to Tasmania.

The Jordan Springs Probus Club meets at the Jordan Springs Community Hub on the 4th Tuesday of every month, 9:30am for a 10:00am start.

I know it’s a cliché but try to do away with the presents and be present this Christmas.

Years (even months) down the track it’s hard to recollect the material possessions that we were gifted with, but we do remember the highs and lows, the times when we were reduced to tears and when we rolled around on the lounge room floor in fits of laughter.

If only I could have ‘one’ more Christmas with my loved ones who were taken too soon.
