One of Jordan Springs’ newest (and cutest) residents, Toby Lynch, has a lot to look forward to this month with the celebration of his first Christmas. Toby’s parents, Sam and Jessica, along with big brother Auron, are excited about sharing their Christmas traditions and the joy of the season with the latest member of their little family.

Preparations are well underway with the first adventure on the list being a photo with Santa for the almost 12-week-old and his family.

The Lynch’s love using the Santa photo as an opportunity to capture a precious family picture. They embrace the occasion by dressing in matching Christmas outfits, which will be made even more special this year with a new addition to their family.

In the weeks leading up to Christmas, little Toby will have numerous family engagements where he will certainly be one of the feature attractions. With family spread out from Richmond to Singleton, Taree and all the way up to Queensland, the Lynch’s find it difficult to get everyone together on the one day, so they ensure they get to see everyone on their own special day. Auron, 3, understands what Christmas is about this year and can share in some of the family excitement. It won’t be long until he can pass on some tips to little brother, Toby.

The Australian Foundation for Disability (Afford) has opened an industry first disability services hub at Cherrywood in Llandilo that incorporates interactive programs and activities to deliver whole-of-life supports to people living with disability.

Designed to provide clients with greater choice of more person-centred supports, Afford’s Cherrywood Hub will provide opportunities for clients to enhance their skills for independent living, to join the workforce or to achieve life happiness.

The Hon. Ray Williams, Minister for Disability Services officially opened the Cherrywood Hub at a ceremony at the Llandilo site recently which was attended by many Afford staff, clients, and their families.

Cherrywood Hub integrates a striking sensory garden centrepiece that spans most of the outside grounds. The garden areas serve to engage clients using a variety of areas where they can explore and learn.

The sensory garden incorporates a walk-through fairy garden with seating area for imaginations to run wild in fantasy and fairytale; an ‘old car’ garden area which has a vintage car as its centrepiece; as well as an old speed boat area, surrounded by beach themed landscaping for clients to explore using a variety of textures. Clients at the Afford Cherrywood Hub | Image: Michelle Flynn

To everyone: a Holy and merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

It’s that time of the year again and on Christmas Eve at 11 pm the service of nine lessons and carols will be held at St David’s followed by the Christ Mass at midnight. The nine lessons and carols outline the long history of Semitic religion which culminated in the life, death and Resurrection of Jesus the Christ. In attempting to come to full understanding of the implications of his resurrection, the study of history through the sciences and disciplines of theology, anthropology, astronomy, psychology etc is life time exercise and no one can really claim to be a master in the totality of learning in these.

To the Christian, creation: our understanding of life’s evolution, redemption: the recognition that in life’s ups and downs with our own strengths and weaknesses, the reality of forgiveness as won in Christ is still a powerful force in everyday living, while sanctification is the recognition that, in the words of St Paul ‘the whole creation groan within ourselves waiting for our adoption” So as we contemplate through the nine lessons and carols we often fall back on the platonic concept of a deity “out there”, who somehow created the universe and life we share. But the lessons and carols emphasizes a deity who is among us, contemporary in the process of history, who absorbed humanity in the person of His son. In his humanity Jesus, the Christ, attracted people to him by the example of his life. He taught and showed people how to live. Some who were attracted to him however, after a while withdrew. This withdrawal was often based on the

unwillingness of people to give of themselves, to see that life means to give and not to take, and to walk honestly.

Those who remained with Jesus, although fleeing at the time of his execution, were caught up in his resurrection. As with St Thomas the great doubter, they came to the realization that indeed Jesus the Christ, was indeed Lord and God. Beyond his humanity is the reality of deity.

So Christmas celebrates this wonder. The technical theological term is ‘incarnation’: humanity absorbed into deity who we call Emmanuel - God with us.

Christmas is an old English word which became common in the English language during the 12th century CE. The festival itself dates from 336 CE commencing in Rome and being slowly adopted by the Churches in the Western and Eastern Europe.

The date itself [25th December] has no historical proof. It was chosen by early scholars who argued back from the conception to determine a date.

Sadly in life today there is much anxiety, suffering, loneliness, homelessness, those caught up in domestic stress etc. Christmas continues to stress however, that we live in hope given to us and within n that hope we learn to walk honestly before God G and the community munity at large.

An Aussie Malta Christmas in Llandilo Laughter can be heard from the hall where upwards of 40 people are watching a Maltese movie called Horrex Borrix.

The group are the Llandilo Maltese Seniors who meet once a month to socialise, share food, swap stories, offer advice and meet new friends. They also enjoy educational and informational talks by a wide range of interesting speakers.

Many of Llandilo’s Maltese population moved to the area so they could continue to farm like they did back in Malta. But, farmers are very busy people and the occupation can sometimes be isolating, so the group was formed nearly 20 years ago to provide a place for meeting up.

Sometimes the farmers will bring and share extra produce and even plants with each other.

“They are such a lovely bunch of people” says Marisa Previtera, who is the Community Welfare Worker for the Maltese Community Council of New South Wales. She travels around to various meetings in other areas checking in with members and offering support to the group leaders, like Helen Azzopardi in Llandilo.

The atmosphere is warm and friendly with several ladies gathered in the kitchen when the chit chat turns to the upcoming Christmas party. They will serve traditional Maltese foods like pudina, pastizzi and of course pastries. Some favourites include ‘imqaret’ which are diamond-shaped, date-filled and deep fried, and ‘qaghaq tal-ghasel’, which are honey or treacle filled rings.

Of course, they will also be serving Australian fare, because like most expatriates, they have new and old traditions and two places that they now consider ‘home’.

“You ask any of them” says Marisa, “and they will say that Australia is the best place on earth. Their grounding and way of life is tied in with Malta and connected up here”.

Here’s wishing a very Merry Christmas and il-Milied it-tajjeb to the lovely Maltese Aussies of Llandilo!

Twilight Movie at Jordan Springs

As part of Jordan Springs’ Christmas celebrations, residents and the community are invited to a FREE twilight screening of Disney’s Moana.

From 6:00pm, kids can enjoy games and craft activities, and are encouraged to dress as their favourite Moana character to win a prize.

Moana will be screened at 7.30pm on Saturday 16th December at the Jordan Springs Town Centre and Lake.  A great night for the whole family.

Stuck for gift ideas this Christmas? In recent years we have seen more and more grandparents, parents, carers and relatives are thinking outside the (gift) box, and bypassing more traditional presents for experiential presents, or gifts which teach children a skill. Swimming lessons proved to be one of the most popular choices last year, with gift voucher sales in 2016 showing an increase of over 50% on the previous year’s numbers.

Especially after last holiday seasons tragic death toll by drowning, it is important to remember that drowning is still the biggest cause of accidental death in Australian children under 5, with the majority of deaths occurring in backyard swimming pools. Encouragingly, each year registered swim schools in Australia conduct over 20 million lessons to approximately 600,000 families nationwide, however an estimate from Royal Lifesaving Australia suggests that less than 25% of all children in Australia are being taught to swim by commercial swim schools each year.

“I think parents and grandparents in particular are looking for gifts that will enhance their child’s learning outcomes, or provide them with a skill or an experience.” Alan Bentley, owner of Nepean Swim and Fitness stated. “Of course children’s safety is a huge factor in the decision making process when choosing the gift of swimming lessons, but I am also hearing from parents that they are reluctant to give their children another piece of technology to encourage couch potato habits, and instead would like to see their children get out and get active.

A gift that ticks both these boxes represents value for money to parents” said Bentley. “With the cost of living rising, a gift of swimming lessons is a way for grandparents or other relatives to contribute to this important household expense”.

Bentley added “Interestingly, we are also seeing an increase in enquiries for our CPR courses for carers, so I think the water

safety messages and behaviours are really starting to be taken onboard and practiced in the wider community. However while drowning’s are still taking place in Australia, there is always room for improvement.”

Police News A high-ranking member of the Rebels outlaw motorcycle gang (OMCG) was due to appear at court last month charged over the alleged supply of drugs in a courtroom.

The Gangs Squad’s Strike Force Raptor commenced an investigation after an envelope containing tobacco and Alprazolam was located within documents in a court room during a trial at a Sydney court on Wednesday 26 July 2017.

The items were seized and examined by specialist forensic officers.

Following extensive inquiries, Strike Force Raptor, with the assistance of the Public Order and Riot Squad, executed a search warrant at a home on Lakeside Parade, Jordan Springs, about 10.30am (Wednesday 22 November 2017).

Officers seized Alprazolam, steroids, and other items relevant to the investigation.

A 26-year-old woman was arrested at the home, but released pending further inquiries.

About 1pm, a 34-year-old man was arrested by Strike Force

Raptor at a home on Crawford Street, Emu Plains.

He was taken to Penrith Police Station and charged with supply prohibited drug, unlawfully secrete thing for it to be found/received by inmate, and possess prohibited drug.

The man, who is a high-ranking member of the Rebels OMCG, was refused bail to appear at Penrith Local Court on Thursday 23 November 2017.

Investigations are continuing.

Strike Force Raptor was established by State Crime Command’s Gangs Squad in 2009. It is a proactive and high-impact operation targeting outlaw motorcycle gangs and any associated criminal enterprises.

Jordan Springs Hits its Strides with Strong Homebuyer Interest

ͻ ͻ ͻ ͻ Following a brief hiatus, Jordan Springs is back in the market with recent land releases attracting strong homebuyer interest in Stage 4 of the eastern precinct.

To kick off its summer sales campaign, Lendlease hosted the “Graze while you Gaze” event recently, a roaming buffet hosted at the 22 homes of the Jordan Springs Display Home Village.

Arthur Ilias, Communities General Manager NSW/ACT, said the development of Jordan Springs’ final precinct was gathering real momentum with some customers building their dream homes and others showing interest in recent lot releases.

“This is a big move for us, and we’re incredibly excited to have got our foot in the door at Jordan Springs East. Our new home has lots of space, with room for a family and backyard,” said Mr Pathuri.

Parents and children can get into a negative feedback loop. It goes something like this…

• Child fusses, screams, cries to get attention • Parent pays attention to the fussing, screaming, or crying, and picks the child up • Child calms down Over time, the child either thinks she needs to fuss to get the parents’ attention or she doesn’t believe she can soothe without the parents’ help. The parent learns that the kid won’t stop screaming until he picks him up.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Toddlers are entitled to a certain number of tantrums each day. The emotional centre of the brain (limbic system) heats up around ages 2 and 3 years old. Tantrums are normal at this age.

But tantrums all day every day are not normal. Something has gone awry if this is happening.

So, I have been teaching toddlers to be calm and ask the parent for a cuddle when s/he needs it, without the fussing. And I have been teaching parents to only respond to a calm child. The parent still stays close to the child, and occasionally reminds the child to calm using few words. The result has been calmer kids and parents, and more positive interactions. Calm is much better than stressed.

You can teach your older kids to be calm too. I used to do this with my kids. If they yell at you, note the tone “that was a loud voice” or “that was a strong reaction”. I would then tell them to stop and take a deep breath. After they did that, I would prompt them to speak to me in a calm manner.

Another trick is to tell the child what he is doing wrong, and what to do instead. For example, “James you are screaming at your brother, you need to use your calm, kind words”. You can use this strategy for any child's mistaken behaviour. Parents tell me that using this strategy helps them to stay calm, and focused on the child’s behaviour.

The Lynch’s also anticipate taking Toby to his first Christmas Carols and enjoying the ‘Movie by the Lake’ experience at Jordan Springs this year.

“Christmas to us is stress free and making memories. Enjoying the great outdoors and letting the kids play and enjoy the joy of Christmas” Jessica told the Jordan Springs Gazette. Toby is set to have an amazing first Christmas with his brother, mum and dad, with many more to come.

Carruthers Tees Off at Twin Creeks

The spectacular Twin Creeks Golf Course was the host course for the 2017 NSW Golf Open from 16-19 November, attracting a high-quality field of professional and amateur players, all chasing this year’s title.

NSW Golf also showcased the up-and-coming golfers of the future, one day prior to the main event, hosting a Junior ProAm. Golf and Country Clubs from throughout New South Wales and the ACT were invited to nominate one of their top juniors to play in the event, with the final field comprising of 75 juniors and 25 professionals, all competing in a team format event.

Jordan Springs’ Coby Carruthers (Leonay Golf Club), Blake Hodges (Dunheved Golf Club), Ben Watson (Springwood Country Club) and Chazz Ritchie (Wentworth Falls Country Club) represented the Penrith and Blue Mountains districts.

Carruthers and Hodges were partnered together, along with junior Adam Derbas (Carnarvon Golf Club) and professional Harry Bateman.

The quartet put in an impressive display, but their team finished outside the top three placings.

Jason Scrivener would take out the Open, shooting a fabulous four-round total of 24-under par 246 to finish six shots clear of the field.

Scrivener was due to head out to Hong Kong the following day to begin his European tour but changed his plans after his spectacular win, electing to stay in Australia and play in the Australian Open.

5 Easy Steps to Holiday Learning The Summer school holidays are a great opportunity for children to recharge the batteries, but for many parents of young children, there is a concern that some of the learning that took place throughout the year will be lost over the long break. It is true that children can regress during the Summer holidays, especially younger children who are just starting to grasp certain concepts and require further consolidation.

Never fear, here are 5 simple tried and tested ways to encourage your children to keep learning throughout the break whilst also having fun: 1. Buy your children books for Christmas on topics they enjoy or better yet, visit the library every few weeks to restock with some new reading material. Read with them but also encourage them to read alone or to a stuffed toy for enjoyment.

2. Get your children involved in planning activities. Perhaps they could use the internet to search for fun things to do. Ask them to create a schedule of activities using the computer. They could even plan transport by looking up timetables and matching up activities and travel times.

3. Go on a day trip or two to a museum, wildlife park, art gallery or live performance. Take time to discuss things your children learned or enjoyed about the experience.

4. Encourage your children to keep a written diary or journal of their thoughts and feelings. If they are young, they may prefer to just write a sentence about what they did that day and draw a picture.

5. Give your children a small amount of money to manage as their ‘holiday budget’. Encourage them to plan their expenses, work out costs, change and keep track of money remaining. This is a great way to practice mathematical skills whilst encouraging a sense of independence.

Remember, although it is important to keep progressing, it is equally important that children get to have some freedom to relax during the break, so they can be nice and fresh for the brand-new year of learning ahead. Last month, The Lakes Christian College were privileged to have Prue Car, State MP for Londonderry, attend a special assembly and present students with their Premier’s Reading Challenge certificates.

Almost all the students from Kindergarten to Year 6 completed the challenge this year. Thirteen students received their Gold Awards for successfully completing the challenge for four years.

One Year 6 student, Chase Fisher, received his Platinum award for completing the challenge every year since he started school.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge is a program that is valued at the college. It is a great initiative of the government to encourage children to read. The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition, but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely.

At The Lakes Christian College, students enjoy taking on the Challenge of reading the 20 books required to complete the challenge each year. Teachers and library staff partner together to assist students in successfully achieving this goal.

The Pudding of Christmas Past

Right. Cards posted. Gifts wrapped. Menu sorted. Wine rack loaded. By the time Christmas Eve arrives, most of us are pretty exhausted from all of the shopping and organising. But, wait, oops, who forgot the Christmas pudding? Good thing the shops are still open, so we can make a quick dash for those last-minute items.

Historically speaking, the Christmas pud was a great source of holiday anxiety for the cook, as the traditional way to prepare this seasonal treat was anything but last minute.

The dessert was introduced to Australia at the beginning of British colonisation.

The batter is made with eggs, suet, breadcrumbs and dried fruits like raisins, currants, figs and almonds with spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice.

The 19th century housewife would work months in advance to produce the perfect pud which involved seeding the fruit, grating the breadcrumbs, hand mixing the heavy batter and then wrapping in calico, muslin or cheesecloth.

Then there were hours of boiling, which meant tending a fire in a fuel stove or under the laundry copper. Then there were the last few minutes of finger crossing on Christmas Day hoping all her hard work didn’t produce a crumbly, sticky or heavy mess.

Later after the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Scheme brought water to the desert, farmers in the Riverina were able to grow more citrus fruit which was preserved as candied peel and used in the puddings. Austrian port and sherry were being used by the 1950s for soaking the dried fruit in.

Coins used to be placed in the batter and a year of luck bestowed on the lucky recipient, but when the currency changed in the 60s, testing found that the new coins turned green and made the pudding have a funny taste. Today, the Australian Mint sells coin packs with a mixture of vintage threepence and sixpence pieces, but recommends they are not baked into the pudding but ‘placed into warmed slices just prior to serving.’

Cooking chocolate is seven times more toxic than milk chocolate. • [Coffee/Tea] Coffee and Tea contain xanthines, which can cause cardiac and nervous system damage. • [Grapes, Sultanas and Raisins] These contain a toxin that targets the kidneys and can cause renal failure. • [Macadamia Nuts] Causes vomiting, diarrhoea, pancreatitis.

Macadamia nuts contain a toxin that can affect the nervous system of dogs – resulting in incoordination or paralysis. • [Alcohol] Alcohol even in small quantities can cause

intoxication. Clean up after parties and don’t leave drinks at dog heights. Alcohol can kill your pet. • [Cooked Bones] Never feed your dog/cats cooked bones.

These bones can splinter and cause intestinal tearing causing peritonitis – this is life threatening. • [Artificial Sweeteners] Xylitol common in many sugar free drinks and lollies causes low blood sugar (even in small quantities) in dogs. • [Meat Soaked Strings from your Roast ] These taste delicious to your pets. Can cause linear foreign body requiring emergency surgery. • [Decorations and Wrappings] Risk for intestinal obstruction (linear foreign body) or strangulation. • [Christmas tree decorations] Can cause strangulation, intestinal obstructions, cuts from glass ornaments. • [Heat Stroke/Stress] An Australian Christmas is often spent around the pool or outside having fun. If your pet doesn’t know when to rest/stop playing/running laps around the pool they may quickly succumb to heat stroke. • [Batteries] If swallowed these can be toxic or cause an intestinal obstruction. • [Electrical Cables/Christmas Lights] Electrocution risk or fire risk if chewed.
