Saving for the Big Day Local couple Darren Auth and Ellie Toohill have come up with an enterprising way to save up for their wedding and have taken to recycling bottles and cans, putting these funds towards their big day.

Darren proposed to Ellie last year, with the spectacular Warragamba Dam as a backdrop. With the couple cashing in their used bottles and cans, Darren had a lightbulb moment that they could use that money for the wedding.

“After recycling our bottles and cans, I did the figures and thought, what can we save this money for? That’s when we made the decision to save for our special day, 10 cents at a time. It just made sense to save for a wedding.” Darren told the Jordan Springs Gazette.

So far, the couple have saved over $8,000 through recycling and their wedding plans are underway.

“The general community have been very supportive. Our family and friends have also donated lots of bottles and cans. We can’t thank everyone enough and appreciate all the support” Darren explained.

The use of calendars to measure time has a fascinating history governed by the question ‘what is ‘time’’. Today we utilize the Christian calendar adopted by the Europeans which in itself has an interesting origin in attempting to measure the process of days. An old catch phrase is the ‘sun comes up and the sun goes down’. The cause and why is a longstanding debate in theology and the sciences. Another well-known calendar is the one developed over the centuries by the Chinese.

The Christian calendar used by the church differs from the Christian calendar of the Europeans in that the new year commences on the 1st of December and goes on to divide the year into seasons.

Readings from Scripture are allocated to each season and sensibly used lay a firm foundation for enhancing growth in the belief and worship of the Holy Trinity. The seasons are given titles: Advent: which begins the year and runs until the birth of Christ is celebrated, concentrates on two aspects- the events leading to the birth and the anticipated return of Jesus the Christ.

Epiphany: outlines the supra-natural: that is how we are living within the life of God.[noting that the supra-natural is not God ] Lent: presents matter to relating to understand the life and death of Jesus.

Easter and Eastertide gives foundation to gaining some understanding of the Resurrection and Ascension of the executed Jesus.

Trinity: is the longest season in the Christian year and basically is directed to considering not only the life and work of Jesus and the life and witness of the early Christians, but also includes teaching that has come down through the years. This is why that from time to time the Calendar has been subject to revision by scholars.

Our Australian Junior Champion of Stage Magic

Local magician Macy Hope, otherwise known as Magic Macy, is all smiles right now, after claiming the title of ‘Australian Junior Champion of Stage Magic’ at the 2019 Australian Junior Championships of Magic, held at the Melbourne Magic Festival last month.

Competing against 8 magicians who ranged in ages from 10 years to 18 years and coming from New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania, this was Magic Macy’s best result, after placing third two years ago at the age of 10.

Macy’s winning act involved her developing her own prediction routine using cartoons she had drawn, which predicted things her volunteer would choose and involved an element of comedy. She had practiced this routine at a couple of events around Penrith in the lead up to the competition.

“She was in shock! I was so proud. It made all the hard work worthwhile. The acts were judged by professional magician Simon Coronel, magician/comedian/actor Lawrence Leung and Melbourne Arts Centre organiser, Emma Dodds. They were judged on 6 criteria: technical skill/handling, showmanship/ presentation, entertainment value, artistic impression/ routining, originality and magic atmosphere. Her prize was a trophy, $500 and the title of Australian Junior Champion of Stage Magic” said Alison Hope, Macy’s mother.

Macy’s next plans will be to work on a new routine for a show at the Nepean Rowing Club on Tuesday 1st October, which will be held to raise funds for Project Magic Australia, as well as assisting magic workshops in Winston Hills in the October holidays. Dr Adrian Sheen from Project Magic Australia has also invited her to perform at another charity event at the Lakeside Restaurant later in the year. Add to this a performance at the Special Children’s Christmas Party at Rosehill Gardens and the launch of the Penrith Kmart wishing tree and Macy is in for one busy end to a magical year.

Grandma's Curried Sausages

Ingredients 1 kg thick beef sausages 1 tablespoon peanut oil 1 medium brown onion, sliced 2 tablespoons curry powder 1 cup (250ml) Massel beef stock 400g can diced tomatoes 1 cup (150g) frozen peas 1/2 cup sultanas Rice, to serve Yoghurt, to serve Fresh coriander, to serve Method 1. Place sausages in large pan, cover with cold water. Bring to a boil over high heat, boil 2 minutes. Drain sausages.

Thickly slice on the diagonal.

2. Heat oil in large saucepan, cook onion, stirring about 3 minutes or until soft. Add curry powder, cook, stirring about 1 minute or until fragrant.

3. Add sausages, stir to coat in curry mixture. Add stock and tomatoes, simmer, uncovered about 5 minutes or until thickened slightly. Stir in peas and sultanas. Cook a further 5 minutes until thickened and peas are heated through.

Serve with rice, yoghurt and coriander.

Berry Bruschetta Ingredients 200g Eureka blueberries 1 1/2 tablespoons caster sugar 4 slices of brioche, toasted Whipped cream, to serve (see note) Thyme leaves, to serve Method 1. Place blueberries and sugar in a frying pan over high heat.

Cook, stirring, for 2-3 minutes or until blueberries start to release their juices.

2. Top brioche slices with whipped cream. Spoon over blueberries. Sprinkle with thyme, if desired.

Note: For a tasty twist on the whipped cream topping, whisk the thickened cream with softened goat's cheese, a little icing sugar and a pinch of ground cinnamon in a bowl until soft peaks form.

The club was formed under the Probus values of supporting and promoting Friendship, Fellowship and Fun in retirement.

We are actively seeking new members from Jordan Springs and surrounding suburbs and currently there is no waiting list for applications.

The May meeting was well attended with the speaker for the day being a Yoga/Meditation instructor, who gave an interesting presentation on the benefits of Yoga exercises in our later years. He also led the group through a short meditation for relaxation. The interest generated has resulted in a Yoga session commencing on Thursdays at the centre for any interested members.

The outing for June was a train and ferry outing to Manly for the day, with lunch at the Manly Bowling Club. An enjoyable day for all who attended.

The Tuesday lunch for July was at Waterstone Restaurant at St Marys Leagues Club.

The event for July was a Christmas in July celebration at La Notte Restaurant in Penrith.

Members can look forward to an exciting program featuring interesting guest speakers, monthly meetings, the opportunity to travel locally or around the world and enjoy exclusive discounts through the Probus Member Benefits Scheme including access to exclusive Probus Travel Insurance plans, developing new interests and staying active.

Upcoming events include a coach trip to Floriade in Canberra with an overnight stay with evening meal, a family picnic day at the Australiana Pioneer Village at Wilberforce, a Queen tribute show at Panthers and a Christmas party at Camden Valley Inn. Planning is continuing towards an interstate trip probably to Tasmania.

Catholic Healthcare Settles on Three New Aged Care Development Sites Catholic Healthcare is delighted to announce the settlement of three new aged care development sites, the first tranche in collaboration with Lendlease. The services, located in Jordan Springs in New South Wales, as well as Richmond and Mount Martha in Victoria, will enhance the organisation’s ability to provide modern, integrated person-centred aged care services for the local residents and neighbouring areas.

Catholic Healthcare’s strategy is to grow aged care services, whilst enabling a continuum of care for residents in adjacent or planned Lendlease Retirement Living villages.

The proposed developments will include the construction of new aged care homes and will feature a range of amenities that will be enjoyed by residents, their families and the broader community. This will include a Chapel, café, a health and wellness centre, a home care hub and other activity and lifestyle spaces.

Located at the corner of Jordan Springs Boulevard and Lakeside Parade, Jordan Springs, the new residential aged care service with 144 resident places will be developed adjacent to the proposed retirement community by Lendlease. Planning approval will be sought in late 2019.

Catholic Healthcare’s General Manager of Property, Michael Lockwood said, “As an organisation we continue to grow and expand our services for seniors and the community in Victoria and New South Wales as the demand for aged care increases”.

Yoga for Kids

A new yoga program designed for children has been welcomed to the local community, with Yoga for Kids taking place at the Jordan Springs Community Hub for the first-time last month.

The 4-day Hatha Yoga for Kids program for children aged 7 to 13 years, is taught by Saiva’s Rahul Venkata, and consists of an introduction to yoga practices and some simple asanas.

Kids learn an ancient yogic practice known as Surya Shakti (Sun Salutation) which is a powerful sequence of 18 postures designed as a complete process for great physical fitness.

“Participants of children’s programs often experience enhanced mental focus, attention and concentration, and improved mind-body coordination. The practices learnt help prevent obesity, asthma, sinusitis and other chronic ailments.

Considering the amount of stress and pressure kids go through these days be it academically or personally; Yoga will certainly assist them along the way� explained Rahul.

Rahul Venkata started practicing yoga at the age of 9. A techie by profession, the pursuit of reaching his ultimate potential lead him to discover yoga. In 2018, he resigned from his full-time job as a Project Manager and underwent an intense 1,750 hours of Hatha Yoga Teacher Program Training in India; designed

by Sadhguru the globally renowned yogi, humanitarian, an enlightened master and founder of Isha Foundation. Equipped with this age-old science of classical Hatha Yoga, he is now back in Australia to teach this. “I teach ISHA Hatha Yoga. Hatha Yoga stems from a deep understanding of the mechanics of the human body, and uses yogic postures, or yogasanas, to enable the system to sustain higher dimensions of energy. By practicing this profound science, one can change and enhance the way they think, feel, and experience life. “I do programs regularly and by request at different venues.

I teach from my home studio in Jordan Springs and I take private classes for individuals and in groups, according to their requirements at their suitable venues. I also travel and teach to those who are unable to travel due to physical challenges or special needs� said Rahul.

Child Escalation When children want something and don’t get it, they can learn that by escalating in their behaviour or emotions (hitting, crying, whining, nagging) they can get what they want. For example, a child wants a lolly in the supermarket. Although you say ‘no’ the child gets louder and more demanding, and you give in to avoid the fuss and judgement from other people in the store.

What is your child learning from this?

Parent Escalation When parents want something from their children they can escalate (nagging, shouting) to get the child to complete the task. For example, you want the child to switch off the computer and come to dinner. You ask several times and each time gets louder. You get to the point where you are screaming at your child, counting, or making threats and demands.

This is where the parent says “my child never listens to me”.

What is your child learning from this?

Combination Of Parent And Child Escalation You can have a combination of child and parent escalation.

The parent escalates in response to the child’s escalation, and fairly soon tempers are frayed, feelings are hurt, and nothing productive or helpful has been achieved.

What are you and your child learning from this?

Remedy?

Give clear, calm instructions. Stay calm, and follow through, so that your child knows that when you say ‘no’ you mean ‘no’ and when you want something done it gets done within a reasonable time frame without a fuss. And as always, continue to build a strong relationship with your child based on love, nurture and trust, because the strength of the relationship determines how much your child will listen and respond to you.

Choosing the Right School

School shopping is becoming increasingly common amongst parents looking to find the ‘best’ educational setting for their children. It seems gone are the days when parents would simply send their child to their closest local public school. We are in a new age where parents are spoiled for choice and schools are in a bid to attract more students using whatever marketing means available. Have we taken it too far or are we just better equipped now to make important decisions? The answer to that question is up to your own interpretation but one thing is for sure, not all schools suit all children. This begs the question – how do I choose the right school for my child?

Choosing the right school for your child comes down to a few core ideas. Firstly, it is important to acknowledge what aspects of education you and your child hold as most important. This will differ greatly from family to family but rest assured, whatever you hold most important, there is an educational setting to match that need. An example of aspects you might consider are academic opportunities, existing friendships, location, personal beliefs, learning support, accessibility, class sizes, parental

involvement and sense of community. Make a list of these aspects and order them from most important to least important.

Once you have this list you can set about your journey finding schools that match your needs on paper.

We are all aware that sometimes a school can appear to hold certain ideals but in reality, things are quite different. This is where the second core step comes into play – visiting the school.

School tours are great for seeing the school environment and getting to know a few key personnel; however, a truer reflection would come from visiting an event the school is holding or popping into the school on a regular day to see students and everyday processes in action. Most schools are more than happy for this to occur if the correct processes are followed.

The third core step is speaking to teachers and members of the school community such as other parents and children.

Listen to what they say but understand that not everyone experiences things the same way. Take the good and the bad and acknowledge that no school is absolutely without fault. Lastly, you need to compare this experience, knowledge and your own interpretation gained from visiting the school with your list of aspects you find most important. Is the school still ticking all your boxes? Are there things that would absolutely rule out your child attending or with which you feel uncomfortable? Once you can narrow this down, an answer should become apparent.

Whatever you do, remember that the decision you make is not set in stone for all eternity. If it does not seem to be working out and all avenues to improve the situation have failed, you can always re-evaluate and change as there are plenty of options.
