The Jordan Springs Lakeside Markets have arrived, with the lakeside playing host to local produce and artisan homeware stalls every third Sunday of the month.

The first market, which took place last month, hosted over 44 stall holders producing an exciting and eclectic range of food and homewares from Sri Lankan cuisine to soy candles. Residents and locals were seen enjoying the market stalls soaking up the fresh air along the scenic lake, surrounded by the beautiful Wianamatta Regional Park.

Monique Annetts, Event Director of Jordan Springs Lakeside Markets, said that the event in Jordan Springs was a great opportunity for the community to get together.

“We’re so excited to bring these amazing market stalls to such a beautiful location in Jordan Springs. It is a wonderful activity for a winter weekend as families can browse exceptional local suppliers, enjoy a delicious bite to eat and top it off with a walk around the picturesque lake”, she said.

It was great to see the locals embrace the concept with both the retailing and residential bodies keen to see the next one. The lakeside, on the corner of Lakeside Parade and Jordan Springs Boulevard, will be transformed with local musicians and a range of market stalls every third Sunday of the month from 9am to 2pm.

The next market will be on 21st August then 18th September. Entry is free for the whole family.

This year, Jordan Springs’ local, Laura Watson had a goal to enter her first City 2 Surf.

With this goal came a desire to help her friend, Lisa Magill, who is currently fighting terminal cancer. With Lisa’s support, Laura will be running in the City 2 Surf in Sydney this month, raising funds for Rare Cancers Australia. “ “In January this year, I came across a blog from a woman like me. She was funny, caring, determined, opinionated, firey, enjoyed life, a happy soul and then I read on that she had terminal cancer� said Laura. “Lisa was a superwoman in my eyes. I was not only obsessed with her blogs, but I admired her strength� she explained.

Laura has created a page on Everyday Hero, the fundraising page for the City 2 Surf, to help raise funds for Rare Cancers Australia and make a difference. “I want to stop cancer destroying people’s lives. I want us to keep working hard to find a cure. So, I’m proudly walking/running for Lisa Magill� Laura announced.

In the Christian Calendar there is a particular day celebrated on August 6th each year.

It commenced being kept in the Eastern Churches round the 4th century following the Resurrection of Christ Jesus.

In began to be kept in the Churches of the Western Europe after the ninth century becoming a permanent celebration in 1457. It is based on the record in Saint Matthew’s Gospel [chapter 17 verses 1-9].

Basically the celebration of the Transfiguration cannot be fully comprehended as even those who were there when it happened were at a loss to fully explain their experience. For us today, the Transfiguration finds meaning when the total life of Jesus is considered.

One of the most telling of interpretations is found in the third chapter of Saint Paul’s second letter to the ancient Church in Corinth. But even this does not exhaust contemplation and meditation on the meaning of the Transfiguration. It came at an important stage in the life of Jesus.

His work in the ancient Roman Empire province of Galilee was completed. It is noted to all intents and purposes it had failed, primarily because the political and religious atmosphere at the time was centred and directed towards defeating the Roman Senate’s domination of the country.

The Transfiguration then can be placed in the context that Jesus had to make a decision: to go on and complete his work resulting in humiliation, suffering and execution or to give up.

So it is in the Transfiguration that his followers realized that God was acting in the Son through the Holy Spirit to complete the promise of the law received through Moses and the promise of the Prophets through Elias to obtain the continual reconciliation between the creator and the created.

Llandilo Public School Celebrates 150 Amazing Years This year marks the 150th Birthday for Llandilo Public School, a remarkable feat for a school not only in the local area but also Australia wide. The little country school began its humble beginnings in 1866, when a slab building housed one class with one teacher, Mr George Browne. In a time when Llandilo was totally bush and scrub, the school operated with nothing more than a few books and stationary.

Fast forward to 2016 and you will find a school that is an integral part of the local area. Everyone in Llandilo knows of someone, their own children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews, who have attended Llandilo Public School. The community is built around the school. It is the hub of the community.

Community Help Produces New Play Space With the help from the local Cranebrook community, Grey Gums Oval playground has been transformed into a new play space.

Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said the old equipment was outdated while the new facilities would allow for a wider range of use and enjoyment.

“Council asked local residents how they used the existing park and they made suggestions on improvements that could be made for residents to fully utilise the space,” Cr McKeown said.

“With that valuable community input Council has designed and built a new play space for all ages overlooking the playing fields at Grey Gums Oval and taking in the view of the Blue Mountains.”

The addition of shelter and seating complements the space, while a new path connection has been built to Glynn Close to improve access. Tree planting improves the feel and look of the area making it a more attractive place to relax and enjoy the facilities.

The project has been completed by Council’s Parks department as part of asset renewal works for the 2015/2016 financial year.

Council’s asset renewal program and Section 94 Developer Contributions jointly funded the work to reserve, totalling $89,100.

Continuing Our Series on Parent Traps…

Parents sometimes give instructions to children in a way that sets them up for failure. Some common problems with instructions are: • Too Many – Children can only take in so much information at once. Sometimes we give too much detail and too many steps. Little kids, and children with disorders or disabilities, can only cope with one instruction at a time.

• Too Few – We need to set our children up for success. For certain tasks, we need to give them enough information to get on with the job. Our kids usually let us know when this happens when they say “but you didn’t tell me that”.

• Too Hard – Sometimes we give instructions that are too hard for children because we have unrealistic expectations of what our kids can do for their age.

• Bad Timing – Instructions given when a child is busy playing with friends or watching his favourite TV show may be ignored.

• Too Vague – Telling a child to stop being silly doesn’t tell the child what she should be doing.

• Giving Instructions As A Question – If there is no option, don’t give an instruction as a question. For example, asking a child “would you like to hold my hand in the car park?” may be met with the reply “no thanks, mummy” and the child runs away from you.

• Long Distance – Yelling instructions across the room or from the other end of the house, frequently doesn’t get much response from a child.

• Mismatch - The parents’ body language does not match what she or he is saying. If you are laughing whilst telling a child to not do something, the child will be confused.

What To Do Instead?

Give your child clear, calm, and direct instructions in close proximity with eye contact. Tell your child what to do (for example, “sit on the lounge”), rather than what not to do (“don’t jump on the lounge”). And have realistic expectations of your children given their age and stage of development.

Local resident Kirsty Morrison has joined the ever growing chorus of parents, whose children are faced with a lack of direct bus routes to and from local schools each day.

Ms Morrison recently contacted Penrith Councillor Tricia Hitchen in regards to her son’s travel times to/from Corpus Christi Primary School in Cranebrook.

Her concerns are for the current 4km trip from Jordan Springs taking around 40 minutes with no direct route.

Councillor Hitchen, who is a member of the Traffic Committee, has promised to raise this as an urgent issue with Busways, explaining that it is not acceptable for small children to have to wait that long for a bus. Comfort or Support: Which is Better?

Often grievers lose friends because their friends don’t know how to provide support. A view supported by research. When a loved one dies your friends want to do the right thing and often tie themselves in knots trying. It’s human nature to want to ease a friend’s pain. Sitting with a friend while they grieve is difficult, you want to cheer them up so they aren’t so unhappy.

Which is better?

Comfort: is when you want to take away the pain and make your friend less unhappy. This can make your friend feel isolated and not heard. Comfort is great when a child falls over and skins their knee, you can give them a kiss, band-aid and a hug.

Well intentioned “At least” statements such as, “At least they lived a good life” make the griever feel alone and misunderstood.

Support: is the desire to provide help and assistance to the griever for life, they are along for the journey.

Instead of trying to comfort the person who is grieving, support them. Don’t just say, “Let me know if there’s anything I can do”. The griever doesn’t know what they want or need.

Find things that you can help with, mowing the lawn, cooking a meal, shopping, taking children for a play date etc. offer your support (what you are willing to do) – they can always say no.

As you can see physical and emotional wellbeing can be helped with effective social support, letting the griever know that they are loved and cared for, that you’re there for the long haul.

Updated Child Restraint laws require all children under seven (7) years of age to be secured in a suitable child restraint or booster seat. The law states that all baby seats & booster seats must be installed & adjusted correctly.

Drivers need to ensure that children younger than four (4) years of age do not travel in the front seat of a vehicle with two or more rows. An unrestrained child sitting in the rear seat of a vehicle can catapult with a force equivalent to the weight of a baby elephant. A survey carried out by Kidsafe found that 69% of child restraints inspected were found to be incorrectly fitted and 25% would have put the child at risk of death or serious injury in an accident. They concluded that a properly fitted child restraint can reduce the risk of death or serious injury by up to 70%.

It is therefore vitally important to have all child restraints fitted, if not inspected, by an RMS Authorised Professional.

• A report by the RACV revealed that a child under 4 years old, if unrestrained, would be 10 times more likely to be killed in a car accident than if in a correctly fitted child restraint.

• In a 60 km/h collision, a 15kg child (average weight of a 3 year old) produces a force of 550kg (the weight of 22 bags of cement) in only 3/100’s of a second.

Our Kitten Adoption Program enables us to find homes for stray and unwanted kittens.

Each kitten has a health check. They have had their kitten vaccinations, been desexed, microchipped and have a product called Advocate applied, which controls fleas, intestinal worms and heartworm. We also worm them for tapeworms.

We have 3 lovely kittens ready for adoption now. They have been raised here from a young age at the veterinary hospital and are very dog friendly.

The 3 male kittens are from the same litter and are 5.5 months old. Two of the kittens are black and one kitten is black and white.

They all have playful personalities and are so much fun to watch when they play together.

When you adopt a kitten you are making a long term decision. Cats can live up to 20 years if provided with a loving caring home. Kittens have certain requirements including providing a balanced and nutritious diet which you will need to change to an adult formula after the age of 6 to 9 months.

Your kitten needs a yearly vaccination to protect it against diseases.

Routine flea and worm medication must be also given.

Formal lessons usually begin around 6 months old, however you can and should practice early water familiarisation before this. Babies are not born with a fear of the water, but may acquire this fear over time, so make sure baby has regular baths and showers, and becomes comfortable with the sensation of water being trickled and then poured over their head. Your 6 month old will then accept the water more readily, and with less fear than an older child.

In addition to safety, there are other benefits for babies introduced to the water early, including the development of gross motor skills and improved strength, co-ordination and balance. The warm water combined with gentle exercise will relax your baby and stimulate their appetite, promoting good sleep and happier mealtimes.

Additionally, the uninterrupted quality time whilst swimming facilitates an even deeper bond between parent and child, and as swimming becomes a natural part of your child’s weekly routine, a healthy exercise habit is created.

But how long will it take for your child to learn to swim? The simple answer is that every child is different, and learning to swim is a long term, ongoing process. Consistency is the key to the development and maintenance of swimming skills, so attending lessons should become an established part of your child’s weekly routine throughout their infant, preschool and early school years.

Regular lessons all year round allow your child to practise the swimming skills appropriate to their developmental stage and learn at their own pace. However the earlier you begin your children on their learn to swim adventure, the sooner they will obtain this lifesaving skill.
