Llandilo’s Little Devils After a big recruitment drive at the beginning of the year, Llandilo Rural Fire Brigade has seven new ‘red hot’ cadets. The cadets, aptly named ‘Little Devils’, are aged from twelve to sixteen years old and are currently undergoing training led by Senior Deputy Captain and Training Officer, Rick Burns.

This comprehensive training involves all types of Rural Fire Service (RFS) firefighting techniques - rolling of hoses, pump operation, team building, radio communications, map reading and simulated fire extinguishing. Also, the cadets train to previous National Cadet and RFS State Championships competition events in preparation for possible competitions.

Deputy Captain Burns told the Jordan Springs Gazette, “Llandilo Rural Fire Brigade is proud to train the youth of the Penrith area and prepare them for a future in which they are respectful and willing to help the community, whether they stay on with the RFS or not. Storytime Launches @ Livvi’s Place Touched by Olivia were delighted to launch their successful Storytime program at Livvi’s Place Jordan Springs last month. This is the fourth location, following Five Dock, Ryde and Dubbo.

Not only does Storytime give opportunities for children to learn social skills, fine motor skills and have a whole lot of fun, it has provided Parents, Grandparents and Carers a way to connect with others in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

Storytime has been funded in partnership with SSI Ability Links and through the Penrith City Council community funding grants for Term 3, and will be held on Tuesdays at 10am.

All are welcome to this fun and free event, and are encouraged to RSVP via the Friends of Livvi’s Place Jordan Springs Facebook group.

Miss Nat is the Storyteller and local resident, and a passionate supporter of inclusive play. She was joined by long time TBO volunteer and Lindsay MP, Emma Husar to launch Storytime last month.

The Christian Bible is a textbook of the Faith in the Holy trinity. The Bible in itself provides no proof for the existence of God. God is taken as a given. It is interesting to note in its pages the changing concept of God from a tribal local deity to the immanent and transcendent caring God. The Bible taken as a whole is not concerned overly with explanation but rather with meaning.

God is seen as one who acts: this is stated but not explained.

The meaning of this action is achieved by the results of the action.

In many instances it is at variance with much that is known from such disciplines as astronomy and anthropology. Within the context of the Bible story coloured by the understanding and knowledge of the time, the teaching is validated by its effect rather than the veracity of the knowledge [e.g. astronomy] in which the story is recorded.

As such the Bible is not a useful tool for apologetics [in defending belief] simply because Jesus Christ left no written record. The written record contained in the New Testament is basically telling the story of the life and teaching of Jesus the Christ many years after his death and ascension.

The record is essentially story telling of which the four Gospels give reasonable coherent accounts, although often requiring comparative interpretation, particularly between the Gospel of St. Mark and that of Saint John.

Apology is thus better in terms of appeal to what Jesus did using the Bible as the supportive source of that action as it is belief in the action of Jesus that leads to acceptance of him as being the Christ. As such the role of the Bible, reason and appeal to the writings of scholars and teachers down though the history

of Christianity give support and guidance to this faith.

There is a beautiful collect in the Anglican Book of Common Prayer which is not only a useful Prayer but a solid summation of consideration of the place of the Bible within the Christian faith: “Blessed Lord who has caused all Holy Scripture to be written for our learning, grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark and learn and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of your Holy Word, we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life which you have given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ.”

In the late 1960s the area that I lived in was told that a new school was to be built to cater for the booming demand. The community quickly formed friends of the proposed school to provide support and funds for the small extras to enhance what the public system provides. Two years later when the school (Carlingford West ) was opened, a good sum of money was available and the nucleus of an already functioning parents group.

The school prospered with strong support from local people.

Today this school has over one thousand pupils and scores very highly in all measures. ISCEA value1136.

The parallel to Jordan Springs is strong, Lend Lease the local developer, a mainly aspirational population, a diverse group mainly in their second home , who value education. What about you young parents getting together now. Let us make our new school the leader in the region.

Mallard Launches Penrith Community Recycling Centre

Member of the Legislative Council Shayne Mallard MLC officially opened the Penrith Community Recycling Centre as part of the Government’s ‘Waste Less, Recycle More’ initiative last month. “It was a pleasure as an old Penrith boy to represent local member, Minister Stuart Ayres MP and also the Minister for the Environment Gabrielle Upton MP to officially open the Penrith Community Recycling Centre at St Marys” Mr Mallard said. The centre is the first in Western Sydney and the first in partnership with the private sector and allows residents from Penrith Council areas and neighbouring council areas a year round free service to drop-off problem wastes that should not be put in kerbside bins. These wastes include gas bottles, paints, used oils, batteries, fluorescent tubes and globes, smoke detectors, cardboard, expanded polystyrene Styrofoam, mobile phones and TV’s. Mr Mallard took the opportunity

to congratulate Mayor John Thain, Council and the Penrith community for their leadership and commitment to reducing landfill and increasing recycling. “Penrith has achieved nearly 60% recycling of waste which is a great effort. The state target is 70% of waste recycled and diverted from land fill by 2020.

Penrith is well on the way to reaching that target” Mr Mallard said.

“In my childhood, Dad and I would just fill the trailer and head to the tip at Kingswood! We’ve all come a long way since those days. We now know what a valuable resource waste is for recycling and work to protect the environment by avoiding land fill”.

“The NSW Government supported the establishment and upgrade of this CRC with a $161,850 grant to the Penrith Waste Facility under the Waste Less, Recycle More initiative” he said.

Penrith Community Recycling Centre is now part of a network of 100 Community Recycling Centres being established across NSW thanks to more than $11 million in grants awarded since 2014.

“The NSW Government is committed to improving waste management and to increasing recycling in NSW. We have just recently announced an extension of the Waste Less Recycle More program until 2021 with an additional $337 million in grants and funding available” Mr Mallard said.

This includes initiatives such as providing solutions like these recycling centres for problem wastes, investing in infrastructure, helping business recycle and getting food and garden waste out of landfill. “I congratulate Penrith Community Recycling Centre on its Waste Less Recycle More funding and in delivering this fantastic service to the community” Mr Mallard said.  Penrith Community Recycling Centre | Image Supplied

It is equally important for the development of healthy selfesteem that children learn how to deal with disappointment.

As a reaction to not getting what they want, such as being chosen for a team, children may sometimes put themselves down, saying things like: “I’m dumb”, “you hate me” or “I’m just stupid”. If this happens, try to avoid being too sympathetic.

Instead encourage your child to try again after the set-back and to enjoy the activity or game even if they aren’t the winner.

Rather than simply reassuring your child that everything will be okay, you can help your child develop their own sense of worth by letting them know that you understand their feelings of disappointment and that you are there to help them work out a reasonable way of dealing with that disappointment.

Remember too, when you’re helping your child with an activity or with homework concentrate on effort not results.

Praising your child for trying and making an improvement will motivate them to continue trying at a difficult task.

I am happy and proud of our cadets, no matter where they come in competition, as long as they have had fun and tried their best.”

Over the years, the Llandilo cadets have represented their Brigade and Zone with distinction, winning places in many local, state and national competitions. Earlier this year, the Little Devils finished an impressive second place in the Cumberland Zone Regional Championships.

The Cadet Program of Llandilo Rural Fire Brigade was established in 1999. Over the past eighteen years they have trained in excess of forty young men and women to the high firefighting standards of the RFS. Many cadets have stayed on with the brigade after turning sixteen to become senior fire fighters.

Is My Child Ready for School?

The pressure to give your child the best educational start in life leaves many families stressed and fearful of making the wrong decision. How do you know if he/she is ready? What should they know before they start? Should you send them when they are 5 or 6?

In New South Wales, the law states that a child must be enrolled in school by the age of 6. This means that you may send your child if they are turning 5 on or before July 31st (for Public Schools - the suggested cut-off date varies in Independent and Catholic). Children should attend school from the beginning of the year if they are already 5, turning 6 that year.

Despite the plethora of opinions about the ‘correct’ time to send a child to school, it is ultimately the decision of the parents to do what they believe is best. As each child is unique, it is important to consider a number of factors when making your decision.

Here are some basic questions you may like to answer to assist in making an informed decision: 1. Can your child listen attentively and follow instructions?

2. Is your child able to go to the toilet, wash hands and open food packets independently?

3. Can your child concentrate on a task and complete it?

4. Does your child express thoughts, feelings and ideas?

5. Is your child able to use a pencil to draw circles, lines, scribbles and letters?

6. Will your child share with others and take turns?

Along with your responses to these questions, it is important to consider your child’s emotional maturity, social awareness and additional needs before making a decision.

Remember - the greatest preparation for school is talking with your child about it. Let them know that you think school and learning are important. Come and Play Cricket regular season undefeated. Amongst the senior grades, they had 4 teams make the semi-finals, with their 6th Grade side making it all the way to the Grand Final.

This is an exciting time for Cranebrook Cricket Club. Whilst it is their expectation that they maintain their senior numbers, last season saw the return of the Under 8’s and Under 9’s age groups after several years without them and they are looking forward to building on those numbers this season. The Club are hopeful of having a side in all age groups from the Under 8’s through to the Under 11’s.

Cranebrook Cricket Club began in the mid 1990’s, after they were previously known as the St Joseph’s Cricket Club. Since that time, the Club has consistently fielded teams in both the local junior and senior competitions.

Their Club caters for both boys and girls from the ages of 6 years and over, whilst the senior teams cater for the ages of 16 years and over. Last season, the Club had 3 junior teams and 7 senior teams competing. Whilst the competition is played all over the Nepean District, they use both Cranebrook Oval and Andromeda Drive Oval (Cranebrook) as their home grounds for both training and game days. The local Club’s Under 8’s and Under 9’s teams play at fit for purpose junior grounds throughout the district.

Help Provide a Safe Home For Life Uniting Burnside is looking for people who can provide a safe, nurturing home for children who are unable to remain with their families. You will be assessed and trained as foster carers to care for children in a range of options.

Cranebrook Little Athletics Centre’s new season will be starting on 22nd of September. “It is my pleasure to announce this funding that will be used to upgrade the Cambridge Gardens Girl Guide hall which is used regularly for Guide meetings,” said Stuart Ayres.

Ms Mork welcomed the funding saying that this upgrade will give the old hall a much needed new lease of life.

The upgrade plans include new kitchen cupboards, island bench and stove, as well as painting of the bathroom and new window coverings. External work will include replacement of the existing gutter which is old and rusting.

Man Charged Over Serious Crash

A man faced court last month after allegedly fleeing the scene of a crash that left a motorcyclist seriously injured.

Just before 3.30pm (Sunday 9 July 2017), a Harley Davison motorcycle and a Toyota Hilux utility collided at the intersection of Coreen Ave and Sydney Smith Drive, before the ute mounted the curb and hit a fence.

The 31-year-old male rider of the motorcycle suffered severe leg and pelvic injuries.

CareFlight landed to treat the man before he was taken to Westmead Hospital via road ambulance.

Officers attached to Penrith Local Area Command attended and, with assistance from the Crash Investigation Unit, established a crime scene.

It will be alleged in court the 28-year-old male driver left the scene without exchanging particulars or rendering first aid, and was found by police walking in nearby Empire Circuit.

He was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station, where checks revealed his provisional P2 licence was suspended.

The Jordan Springs man was charged with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, driving manner dangerous, driving whilst suspended, and failing to stop and render assistance after vehicle impact causing grievous bodily harm.

He was refused bail, to appear before Penrith Local Court on Monday 10 July 2017.

RSPCA Cupcake Week in August 2017 A Cupcake Day is a great way to raise awareness and money for the RSPCA. We are hosting a Cupcake Week at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital from Monday 21st to Friday 25th August 2017 between 9am-7pm.

Pop in to enjoy a cupcake (or two!) and even a ‘pupcake’ for your beloved pet. We have made ‘pupcakes’ which are dog friendly and do not contain any chocolate which is toxic to dogs.

The RSPCA is the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a non-profit, community based charity that works to prevent cruelty to animals by actively promoting their care and protection.

The RSPCA is not an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the community – through animal adoptions, volunteering, event participation, donations, fundraising, corporate partnerships, corporate support, bequests and grants – to support its vital daily work.

PupCake Recipe This special treat for your pups are sure to get the tail wagging!

Remember to serve up these doggy cupcakes in moderation because we don’t want your poodle addicted to strudel!

Makes 12-14 pupcakes.

Ingredients 2ž cups water

Ÿ cup unsweetened apple sauce Ÿ teaspoon vanilla 4 cups wholemeal flour 1 cup dried apple pieces (you can also use fresh fruit) 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 cage-free egg, beaten slightly 4 tablespoons honey Directions 1. Preheat oven to 175°C. Spray a cupcake tin with cooking spray.

2. Mix all wet ingredients thoroughly and combine dry ingredients in a separate bowl.

3. Slowly add wet ingredients to dry ingredients, scraping well to make sure no dry mixture is left.

4. Pour the mixture into the cupcake tin.

How To Help Kids Understand the Death of a Loved One Death is difficult to understand but especially tough for kids. They often ask, “When am I going to see…?”

“Can we visit…?” or “Where is…?” These questions make it uncomfortable for adults.

1. It’s best to be honest in what you tell them. It’s important to be direct with the information of the death. Be mindful of the child’s age and development when choosing what details to share. Keep it simple.

2. Let the children grieve in their own way. Keep the lines of communication open. If they ask the same questions repeatedly, answer them as if it was the first time you heard it. They’re trying to make sense of what has happened.

It’s crucial to give them the opportunity to express their emotions.

3. Children love to help, so include them in the final goodbye.

Children love being creative. You can help children make a gift, draw a picture, write a letter or make a card. This is an

opportune time to discuss what happens when you die.

4. Remember there is no right way to grieve. Children may resort to their imagination i.e. having an imaginary friend, having the person who died be in their play etc. this helps the child feel safe and allows them to make sense of what has happened.

5. The best way to support your child/children is to listen to them without judgment and encourage them to grieve.

Reassure them that you will always be there to support them.

Sometimes there are no words for the pain that you’re feeling, only tears and that’s okay. Let them know that grief is a normal response to what has happened. Tell them that everyone who knew that person will be sad too and that’s all right.
