A New Little A’s Season is Here With the warmer weather on its way, it is almost time for the 2018/2019 Little Athletics season to get underway.

Competition at Cranebrook Little Athletics Club starts on Friday the 21st September 2018 for the athletes from the Under 6’s to Under 17’s with Tiny Tots commencing the week after.

Last season, the local club had a total of 201 athletes competing and they look forward to those athletes returning as well as seeing new faces this year.

The 2017/18 season saw 52 of their athletes compete at the Annual Zone Championships, with 37 gaining selection for the Regional Championships. From this, 13 were successful in heading off to the State Championships.

“Every season, the dedicated committee look forward to be a part of a community which embraces the Little Athletics motto of Fun, Fitness and Friendships. We are excited this year with our off-season purchase of electronic timing gates, which will assist in each night running more efficiently. It has taken a few years of raising funds from our weekly BBQ and canteen profits to save for this system” beamed Melissa Debritt, President of Cranebrook Little Athletics Club.

Debritt returns for her second year as President and has been with the club for 6 years. “We are fortunate to have a full committee that truly supports one another and work tirelessly behind the scenes. Neighbourhood Watch

Ropes Crossing

Local residents and members of the community have come together to form Neighbourhood Watch Ropes Crossing.

The group was formed just four months ago, after one of the founding members had their car stolen. Since then, the Neighbourhood Watch group has expanded to over 200 and it continues to grow.

Neighbourhood Watch Ropes Crossing are dedicated, and passionate residents concerned about the crime that is happening everyday in their suburb with the aim to raise community awareness and to strengthen ties within the area.

“Our very first meeting was a small group who got to know and hear each other’s concerns about the overall safety of our neighbourhood and to raise community spirit. Our main objective is to keep Ropes Crossing a safer environment for all residents” said Mitch Keyes, member of Neighbourhood Watch Ropes Crossing.

If you would like to join the group, you can contact them through their Facebook page for details. You can also attend their monthly meetings that take place on the first Sunday of every month. The meetings provide an opportunity for members to introduce themselves, have any questions answered and discuss upcoming plans or issues that need addressing.

Their future plans are to get the community even more involved and active in crime prevention and to educate members on how to be more secure with their home, car and valuables.

New Pup on the Block Meet one of the newest residents of Jordan Springs, Lola – an American x English Staffy with a penchant for mischief. Coming from a breeder in The Oaks, Lola joined her new family the Smith’s this year and has certainly made her mark on their hearts as well as their home.

Lola seemed like the perfect puppy candidate for the Smith’s. As they already had a delightful Maltese x Cavalier King Charles Spaniel called Bella at home, it was important to make sure they got a dog that would fit in with their family. After 2 years of serious consideration and research about which dog to get, the Smith’s finally made the decision to get a Staffy after a neighbour’s dog paid them a surprise visit, letting herself into their garage and making herself at home. The Smith’s fell in love with her gorgeous Staffy smile and set out to find their own Staffy to complete their family.

“Not ever using Gumtree before, we managed to stumble over a photo of the cutest most innocent looking little pup you’ve ever seen, so of course we text to see if she was still available. Fate stepped in and she was” Mrs Smith told the Jordan Springs Gazette.

But once they got Lola home, the cheeky pup with the face of an angel started taking over. After destroying nine beds, thousands of dollars’ worth of landscaping, jumping all over visitors and thinking she owned the place, it was time to take serious action. The Smith’s decided to enrol Lola in a 14-day train and board dog obedience bootcamp to teach her good doggy manners and obedience. They were sceptical at first but figured she couldn’t come back any worse and anything would be an improvement.

It was a very quiet and anxious fortnight as the Smith family waited to see what type of student Lola was. When the trainer brought her out, they were amazed at the difference and could not have been happier. Lola seemed happier, filled with purpose and full of Staffy smiles. “She is just such a pleasure now to have around. Perfect manners for visitors, much more settled and happier to be around us rather than running wildly around the place and very obedient” Mrs Smith said.

The Smith’s recommend trying a 14-day board and train program if your dog’s behaviour is out of control. It could mean the difference between re homing a dog you can’t handle and having a wonderful pet you enjoy having around, like their beautiful Lola.  Lola a proud member of the Smith Family | Image Supplied. Jordan Springs Probus Club The Club has been formed to support the Probus values of supporting and promoting Friendship, Fellowship and Fun in retirement. We are actively seeking new members from Jordan Springs and surrounding suburbs and currently there is no waiting list for applications.

Our most recent presentation was from the Western Sydney Community Legal Centre. They gave an interesting talk on the legal challenges faced by older Australians. This included information on Enduring Guardianship and Power of Attorney recommendations.

Other speakers have been arranged to present their interests and information to our members at our monthly meetings.

We are still establishing some special interest groups with the walking group meeting each Tuesday morning, except on the monthly meeting day, for a number of laps of the Jordan Springs Lake. Regular dining events are being held for lunch and dinner at local eateries and restaurants. The latest of these was a successful lunch at the Pioneer Hotel on Northern Rd with 18 members and potential members attending.

Members can look forward to an exciting program featuring interesting guest speakers, monthly meetings, the opportunity to travel locally or around the world and enjoy exclusive discounts through the Probus Member Benefits Scheme including access to exclusive Probus Travel Insurance plans, develop new interests and stay active.

Upcoming events include a trip to Watsons Bay for lunch (train & ferry), the Postman’s run on the Hawkesbury River (train) and a trip to Thirlmere Railway Museum by coach.

Jordan Springs Blooms into Life

The Jordan Springs project team joined forces with Braddock Public School students and Greening Australia to plant around 500 locally-sourced indigenous trees, shrubs and grasses as part of Schools Tree Day. The cohort planted an open space area of approximately 8,670 sqm in a biodiversity corridor at Jordan Springs.

The biodiversity corridor is used for bush regeneration and habitat conservation for native animals in Cumberland Plain Woodland, an endangered ecological community.

A wildlife underpass links Wianamatta Regional Park to the biodiversity corridor, allowing smaller native animals such as possums, antechinus and native rats to move safely.

“We are working hard to make our community beautiful and healthy” a Braddock Public School student said.

“The team at Jordan Springs know the importance of working with the local community to make a difference and create positive environmental outcomes.

“It’s especially rewarding working with young people in the community, who will become our future builders, engineers and developers, and teaching them about the benefits of maintaining green corridors in urban areas” said Arthur Ilias, Lendlease Communities General Manager NSW/ACT. The rest of the time we can be kind. Sometimes we have to set boundaries and limits for our children to keep them safe and well. It’s an important part of parenting, and an important part of a child’s development.

Children feel safer when we put reasonable limits on them, and they expect it of us.

Some of the angriest children I have worked with are those whose behaviour is an attempt to get Mum or Dad involved in managing their behaviour. His “out-of-control” behaviour is his way of trying to get Mum or Dad to take more control. And what does “out-of-control” look like? A child hitting you, being angry with you, screaming at you, telling you that she hates you, running away from you. Anger is fear expressed in a loud manner.

When a child perceives a parent as ‘weak’, unable to take charge, the child feels unsafe, so she ramps up her behaviour to try to force the parent to take responsibility for setting the limits.

However, some parents have a really difficult time doing this.

The parent may have grown up with a parent who was harsh, punitive, and mean, and does not want to be like that person, so she flounders when it comes to setting boundaries and limits and guiding and educating her child. When the parent flounders, the child flounders.

The child has a limited experience of life, so out of frustration and anger he resorts to yelling and hitting you to get you to take notice. If negative attention is all the child gets, then she will seek more of it through her behaviour.

‘Punishment’ does imply being mean. I ask parents to focus on ‘discipline’. The word ‘discipline’ originated from the Latin word ‘disciplina’ and it meant instruction and knowledge, and to learn.

And what do you want your child to learn? Self-control. When children learn self-control they learn balance, calm, persistence, and confidence. Is that the kind of kid you want to send out into the world?

Setting boundaries and limits for your child can be done in a calm and methodical manner. It does require you to be consistent, immediate, and decisive. It also requires you to role model selfcontrol. You calmly and quickly deal with the behaviour, so you can enjoy more of the good stuff (relationship, connection, fun) with your child.

Buy a Bale with Ice Cream Sales

Students at The Lakes Christian College are enjoying eating ice creams in an effort to raise money to support the drought affected farmers.

The College canteen only operates a few days a week, so on the non-canteen days the SRC are selling ice creams and ice blocks and all proceeds are being given to Buy a Bale to help farmers. The College encourages its students to think about others and to reach out into the community to support those in need.

Earlier in the year, students held fundraising activities to support the Westmead Children’s Hospital. On other occasions, student fundraising has been held for Camp Quality and Cystic Fibrosis. In response to the drought, students asked if this term’s fundraising could go to the farmers by donating to Buy a Bale.

The College greatly appreciates the support and assistance given by Cranebrook Woolworths in this venture. What’s Cooking

Mango Meringue Bites Ingredients 2 small ripe mangoes, peeled, chopped 2 tablespoons caster sugar, plus 3/4 cup extra 2 tablespoons lime juice 2 egg yolks 75g butter, chopped 24 mini tart shells 3 egg whites Preparation 1. Blend or process mango, sugar and lime juice until smooth.

Transfer to a medium saucepan. Whisk in egg yolks. Place over medium-low heat. Stir constantly for 6 to 8 minutes or until mixture thickens and coats the back of a spoon.

Remove from heat. Add butter, one piece at a time, whisking until combined. Cool for 5 minutes. Place tart shells on a large baking tray. Divide curd among tart shells.

Refrigerate for 3 hours.

2. Preheat grill to high. Using an electric mixer, whisk egg whites until soft peaks form. Gradually add extra sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, until firm peaks form. Place meringue in a piping bag fitted with a 1cm fluted nozzle. Pipe meringue onto pies. Place under grill for 2 minutes or until tops are lightly browned. Serve.

Spring Clean Your Body At long last, Spring arrives. We often think of this season as a time to throw open the windows and let the fresh air in while doing a big tidy up around the house.

Create an outdoor entertaining space - get some comfy seating and eat more meals outside, hang out with the family or friends, take your laptop outdoors to work or better yet, just relax and read a book.

Try a new outdoor activity - this is a great time to try something new like yoga, hiking, swimming, biking, golf or kayaking.

Practise mindfulness - learn to meditate, keep a gratitude journal or write affirmations. It’s important to declutter the mind, heart and soul.

Change your diet - drink more water and add a springy touch to meals.

10,000 Reasons to Fight Cancer Local small business owner and Jordan Springs resident Stuart Brooks recently organised a bold fundraiser, Punchfest, where the experienced martial arts instructor would complete 10 punches at his Shaolin Martial Arts Centre in Werrington for every $1 that he raised for charity.

After putting the call out on social media, which included over 4,000 family and friends, Stuart was able to raise over $1,000. This equated to over 10,000 punches!

“It all started with Dry July, the fundraiser for Cancer research.

My wife is a Cancer survivor and she gave me great motivation in regards to raising valuable funds with Punchfest. If it wasn’t for our medical system, she probably wouldn’t be here to give me the motivation that she does. I was hoping to raise $500 but ended up doubling that to $1,006.30. This meant I had to do 10,063 punches on the boxing bag” explained Brooks.

The gruelling charity event took approximately 90 minutes to complete the 10,000 plus punches, which was based on the amount of money that people had sponsored him. This was done as a Facebook Live event and all the sponsors received a shout out whilst he was doing the punches.

“After it all, my hands had a few cuts and bruises and my shoulders and core were burning. I did the last lot of 1,132 punches in one go to finish it off ” he added.

Stuart is already planning future charity fundraising events.

He is also currently supporting our drought affected farmers through Buy a Bale of Hay. “I would like to publicly thank for their support on the day my wife Karen, Kyoshi Cheryl Lynch – Gardner from Budo Ryu Kempo, Nathan Tasker, Lisa Carey, Matthew Day and all the legends who sponsored me” Stuart ended.  Stuart preparing for Punchfest | Image Supplied

GARAGE SALE Gardeners looking for inspiration or just wanting to experience the beauty of spring in the Upper Blue Mountains, will again be flocking to the annual Leura Gardens Festival in September and October.

This year’s festival, the 54th, will take place over 2 long weekends: Saturday, 29 September to Monday, 1 October Friday, 5 October to Sunday, 7 October The cost of an all-gardens ticket is $25 and $8 per person per individual garden.

This year there will be ten beautiful cold-climate gardens on show to captivate our visitors and provide inspiration to all. There will be masses of tulips, bluebells, daffodils, peonies, rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias as well as magnificent flowering cherries, forest pansies, crab apples and dogwoods to delight the eye.

Other attractions include the Music in the Gardens performances held from 1pm in the gorgeous grounds of the Waldorf Leura Gardens Resort on each of the festival days and including the Sydney Mandolin Orchestra and the Heathens Choir of Blackheath. Entry will be by way of a gold coin donation.

Visitors can also take home a permanent memento of the festival from the Plant Sales Centre which will this year feature plants from several new participating nurseries, providing a much wider range of both native and exotic species. The centre will also have on sale metal garden art and an interesting range of garden tools.

Also of interest is the Art Show presented by the Society of Mountain Artists featuring work created in the gardens during the Festival.

Both the Art Show and the Plant Sales Centre will be open for 9 days from Saturday, 29 September to Sunday, 7 October.

All proceeds go to the Blue Mountains District ANZAC Memorial Hospital and other health related organisations.

During the 1930’s some scholars looked back on a 100 years of evolutionary science yet the continuing question of the meaning of life remained particularly in an immense and complex universe. However three scholars are of interest in their attempts to tackle the question: Teilhard de Chardin [1881-1955] was a Jesuit scientist and his cosmology pushed the theology of his day to its limits. Censured in his lifetime his works were only published after his death.

His cosmology refused to relinquish a Christ centred structure located within an evolution spiritual perspective.

Olaf Stapleton’s [1886-1950] thinking was confined to the intellectually outcast genre of science fiction. Cosmologies with a critical social purpose have been traditionally expressed in dramatic form and as such his writings joins the long history of cosmological drama such as Blake’s visionary epics.

Francis Younghusband [1863-1942] was a religious eclectic and a noted explorer but his cosmology is not readily accepted

due to stressing benign colonialism of European expansionism throughout the world.

These three scholars are respected and still exert a wide influence. De Chardin’s “the Phenomenon of Man� has been recognized as one of the great books of modern time while Stapleton has been recognized in having a titanic imagination brought to science fiction writing.

His book “Last and First Men� was acknowledged as a seminal influence on the greats of modern science fiction.

Younghusband was the founder of the World Congress of Faiths in 1936, one time President of the Royal Geographical Society, the inspiration behind the original Mount Everest expeditions and a direct influence on the preservation of natural landscapes in Britain.

Only the unwise will say there is no God. Study of the contribution of these three scholars greatly assists as we attempt to see our turbulent world against a background of stars.
