Llandilo’s Moment in Time Llandilo Public School recently hosted 360 students past and present, family, friends and guests at a special assembly where the time capsule from their 150th Birthday Celebrations from 2016 was laid in the school’s new garden bed.

School Captains Stephanie Galea and Catherine Sultana were joined by Principal Deborah Getley, who placed the time capsule in the garden, to be opened by future generations in 50 years’ time in 2066, which would mark the local school’s 200th Birthday.

“This time capsule is from an important moment in time for Llandilo Public School. We hope that those students and teachers who open this have just as much a wonderful time as the students and teachers of now had putting it together” said Deborah Getley, School Principal.

The day’s assembly started with a special performance from the school choir, who sang ‘Sing You Brave People’, a song written by a local teacher. School Prefect Skylah McBurney gave an emotional speech about what it means to her about being a student. Skylah is now the 5th generation of her family to have attended Llandilo Public School.

The time capsule was filled with memorabilia that was significant to 2016 and the educational landscape then. There were letters, photographs, toys and mementos and much of the contents were provided by each class of students at the school that year.

Local Community Comes Together for Farmers With many parts of the State suffering from drought, local Leone Cutler has seen first hand the devastation that it can leave behind. After many discussions with her friends who live in the drought affected areas of North Western NSW, Leone wanted to do something to try and assist them. It was from there that she and a small dedicated group of like-minded ladies formed the ‘Llandilo (not quite the) CWA Fundraising Group’ in August of this year.

With a little less than a week’s notice, the group managed to hold the first of two community cake stalls. “Our wonderful bakers cooked almost 1,000 cakes, biscuits and slices with just a few days’ notice. It was amazing and a sell-out! We were so overwhelmed by the response that we decided to hold another cake stall combined with a BBQ, just 10 days later. This was even more of a success as we were inundated with delectable and beautifully packaged sweet treats – this time more than 1,500 items were made and delivered by the wonderful people of our community. In total, we raised more than $8,000” explained Leone.

The money was converted to prepaid Visa Cards and Leone personally drove to Gunnedah to present them to a representative of the Red Cross/CWA. The first beneficiary received his within 24 hours and used the funds to seek urgent medical assistance.

“For me personally, the drive to the North West region was very depressing as the magnitude and severity of the drought was in plain sight the whole trip” Leone added.

The Llandilo (not quite the) CWA Fundraising Group are planning a huge Christmas toy and gift drive beginning mid-October to midDecember. From the 15th of October, they will be accepting wrapped Christmas gifts, with signage attached to advise what age and gender the gift is suitable for. The drop off points will again be at the Llandilo IGA, and Australia Post Llandilo. They will also open their drought donation points and will be having another monster cake stall and BBQ. “We are confident that our wonderfully philanthropic community will again band together and get behind this worthy cause” ended Leone.  Amazing support shown by the community at the recent cake stall | Image Supplied

Ropes Crossing Recycled Water Scheme Public exhibition of developer charge Sydney Water has prepared a draft developer servicing plan and charge for the Ropes Crossing Recycled Water area.

The charge has been calculated using a methodology approved by our pricing regulator, the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART). The charge represents the financial contribution Lendlease must make to Sydney Water for recycled water infrastructure that services the Ropes Crossing development.

The proposed charge, once registered with IPART, will only apply to Lendlease.

The Club was formed to support the Probus values of supporting and promoting Friendship, Fellowship and Fun in retirement. We are actively seeking new members from Jordan Springs and surrounding suburbs and currently there is no waiting list for applications.

The presentation for August was from the Cranebrook Fire and Rescue NSW. They gave an informative presentation on fire safety around the home. This included information on smoke detectors, fire prevention measures and what to do in the event of a fire. The presenter also took some time discussing the upcoming bushfire season with some tips to stay safe We are still establishing some special interest groups with the walking group meeting each Tuesday morning.

Regular dining events are being held for lunch and Dinner at local eateries and restaurants. The latest of these was a successful lunch at Rashays Restaurant on Mulgoa Road with 14 members and potential members attending.

During the month we had a very enjoyable outing to Watsons Bay for lunch at the Doyles on the Wharf Café. 12 members travelled by train and ferry to the venue.

Members can look forward to an exciting program featuring interesting guest speakers, monthly meetings, the opportunity to travel locally or around the world and enjoy exclusive discounts through the Probus Member Benefits Scheme including access to exclusive Probus Travel Insurance plans, develop new interests and stay active. Upcoming events include the Postman’s run on the Hawkesbury River (train) and a trip to Thirlmere Railway Museum by coach.

Ropes Crossing Hosts Suicide Prevention Fundraiser Local resident Chloe Taylor recently held a fundraising event, ‘Chloe’s Suicide Prevention Morning Tea’, at the Ropes Crossing Community Hub last month. The event was organised to help raise funds as well as awareness of suicide prevention.

It was attended by just under 100 members of the local community and featured a cake stall, photo booth, Nutrimetics, mini make over, jumping castle, sausage sizzle, raffle and a suicide prevention stall which sold mugs, bags and stickers. $2,900 was successfully raised on the day at the fundraising event.

“I have been personally affected by suicide, but I found the support I needed to become who I am today. This event was important in helping with the prevention of suicide” said Organiser Chloe Taylor.

According to Lifeline Australia, the overall suicide rate in 2015 was 12.6 per 100,000 in Australia. This is the highest rate in 10 plus years.

The support, from not only those who came to visit the morning tea but also the volunteers on the day was an amazing show of community spirit. Blacktown City Council kindly donated the hall, whilst several local businesses donated vouchers and prizes for the raffle.

Chloe hopes to hold a similar fundraiser locally next year, with plans in September or later in the year.

Whenever I want a belly laugh I look at one of his videos, he is so cute. He is very fond of ‘pep talks’. One of his videos is ’20 things we should say more often’.

I am not funny like Kid President, and I’m not fond of corndogs, but here are my top 20 things parents should do if they want to be happier parents (in no particular order): 1. Get rid of ‘good boy’, ‘good girl’, and ‘good job’. Use descriptive praise instead.

2. Get rid of ‘naughty’ and ‘bad’. Tell your child what s/he has done wrong, and what to do instead.

3. Avoid ‘don’t’, ‘stop’, ‘no’, ‘quit’, and ‘not’. Tell your child what s/ he has done wrong, and what to do instead.

4. Give your child a minimum of 12 hugs per day, whether s/ he deserves it or not (that’s called unconditional love).

5. Avoid questions if your child has no option. “Would you like to hold my hand in the car park?” “No thanks Mum/Dad”.

6. Be a good role model. ‘Do as I say not as I do’ doesn’t work any more in this age of savvy bright sparks.

7. Be consistent, immediate, and decisive.

8. Be assertive (not passive or aggressive) and stand up for yourself in a kind way. They are looking at (and learning from) you.

9. You can set limits and boundaries for your kids. You don’t need to be mean.

10.

Screens are a privilege not a right. I don’t know how my generation ever survived without screens. Oh yeah, we played outside, a lot.

11.

Have dinner together. Ditch the screens at dinner time.

12.

If behaviour is predictable (happens a lot), it’s preventable.

13.

The more attention you pay to negative behaviour, the more of it you will get. Focus on the positives.

14.

Take responsibility for your own thoughts, feelings and actions.

15.

Make consequences related to the mistaken behaviour.

16.

Kids aren’t allowed to hit you. If they do, they learn that they can get their own way through violence.

17.

Teach your kids to breathe. In through the nose, hold, out through the nose, hold.

18.

After teaching them to breathe, teach them how to problem solve.

19.

Sing, dance, play, laugh. Look after yourself.

20.

Do Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) because it’s regarded by the United Nations as the best parenting course in the world, and it’s Aussie made. And it’s cool.

All About Water Safety!

With the warmer weather here, it’s time to talk about safety.

Safer Swimming is really at the heart of everything that we do. Even 1 unnecessary drowning death is 1 too many. With drownings still happening every summer, across a range of ages, genders, backgrounds and circumstances, we need to act as a community to get everyone swimming as soon as possible, and well before summer.

Every year it’s so hard to read the statistics around drowning, and even harder to imagine what the families of the victims are still going through. Every single one of these drownings is a tragedy that affects the family, friends and community forever. 291 people drowned in 2016/17. Why does it continue to happen? In many cases, the water safety layers of protection were simply not in place – supervision, fencing the pool and shutting the gate, teaching children to swim from babies and being prepared for an emergency.

What can you do to minimise the risk? Get your child into swimming lessons. Make sure all the pool barriers are secure.

Always supervise your children and don’t get distracted.

Remove any standing water that could possibly be an attraction. Do you know of children that can’t swim in your circle of friends or family? Please encourage the parents to do something about it! Can you swim? We run adult private and group lessons too.

For David Eddy, who was a student there from 1959 to 1961, the occasion was one that brought back great joy that he hadn’t felt since he was a child. “My memories of the school are like yesterday. This school has the same feeling, which is a community feeling. There may have only been two wooden buildings back then, but the students of today are just as lucky as I was to attend Llandilo Public School” he said.

English Class Connects Community Breaking down the language barrier and connecting and communicating with one another has just been made easier with the establishment of an English class for adults of non-English speaking backgrounds in Jordan Springs.

The community-focused class commenced on 24th July this year and is aimed at anyone who wants to improve their English speaking, listening, reading and writing. It is being facilitated by a dedicated volunteer team from Jordan Springs Anglican Church, who coordinate the content, teach the lessons and provide conversational practice.

Each week the class encompasses a mix of specific teaching, interactive activities to practice the concepts and informal conversations over supper. So far, the students have responded to the classes with enthusiasm and eager participation. Some of the students have also been keen to continue the relationships beyond the classroom, inviting volunteers to their home to experience their hospitality and practice English amidst their everyday routines.

“As we’ve seen the Jordan Springs population growing, we’ve noticed that a considerable number of residents have limited English. We saw this as an opportunity for us to serve our suburb.

We could strengthen English language skills, but more than that, we could connect people in relationships, and help build people’s confidence to engage in the wider community” Pastor Toby Campbell explained.

The only difficulty the group has experienced so far has been communicating the details of the class to people who have limited English. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2016 Census), over 35% of families living in Jordan Springs speak a language other than English at home.

The Origins of Halloween Halloween is celebrated on October 31st. There are as many ny versions of the origins of Halloween as there are views about the day itself.

Some people see it as a fun activity for children who dress up in costumes, have parties and go trick-or-treating to collect as many sweets as possible. Others see the day as a superstitious time of ghosts and evil spirits.

As an American who has lived abroad for 25 years, I have been asked zillions of times ‘Why is Halloween such a big deal in the States?’ And, all I can say, is that it’s all about the SUGAR! Kids in America love dressing up and running around the neighbourhood collecting as much candy as they can carry, until as late as their parents will allow them to stay out. The whole community gets involved and many houses are decorated, some quite elaborately.

The actual origins of Halloween date back 2,000 years ago. The 31st is the last day of the Celtic calendar, which was originally a pagan holiday honouring the dead. The Christians then created All Saints Day on the 1st November to honour saints (and convert pagans). The Celts believed that the souls of the dead were free to roam the streets on that night, so they left goodies out to soothe the unfriendly spirits. This is how trick-or-treating got its start.

National Veterinary Nurse’s Day On Friday 12th October 2018 we plan to celebrate National Veterinary Nurse’s Day at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital.

It is great to acknowledge the hard work and efforts of our veterinary nurses. The nurses do a lot of work behind the scenes that you do not see or hear about. The nurses monitor the patients whilst under general anaesthetic, medicate animals whilst in hospital, answer enquiries, clean the hospital, and ensure the smooth running of the veterinary hospital. Without the veterinary nurses, we would not be able to do our job as a veterinarian.

We plan to celebrate by having a long lunch with enough food to feed an army.

We have 8 nurses at the hospital, and I hope you get to know them as you come and visit our hospital.

Sophie Mead Sophie has been completing her TAFE work experience with us for her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing since June 2016, and joined our team in October 2016 as a Kennel Hand.

Sophie started a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Advanced Studies majoring in Animal and Veterinary Bioscience at Sydney University in Feb 2018, with the aspiration of becoming a veterinarian. We are so proud of Sophie!

Sophie has owned a variety of pets throughout her life but has always had a particular fondness for the cats in the family. At the moment, Sophie has 2 dogs (Teddy and Trixie), as well as her 3 very spoiled cats (Angus, Casper and Tallulah).

Orchard Hills has become a second home to Sophie, and she loves being able to see the smiling faces of colleagues, clients, and patients alike.

Renai Lewis – Practice Manager Renai has grown up in the Penrith area and has seen many changes over the years.

Renai joined the team in August 2014 where she was warmly welcomed by all.

Renai has several furbabies including: Alli (Golden Labrador), Cooper (a naughty Labrador), Lenny (a cat) and Flick (a Lorikeet).

Renai adores her pets and spends every spare minute with them, when she is not busy being a wife and mum to 4 adult children.

Chelsea Burcher Chelsea completed her Certificate IV in veterinary nursing at Richmond TAFE in June 2018. She started her work placement at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in January 2017 and joined our team in August 2017.

Chelsea has always wanted to work with animals since a young age and has one dog, Meg an 8 year old Jack Russell Terrier.

Chelsea loves working at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital and being part of the team. She is excited to see what the future holds.

Lizzie De Jonge Lizzie completed the Veterinary Nursing Certificate IV in July 2016.

Lizzie is currently studying the Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services at the Delta Institute, which is an animal behaviour and training course.

Lizzie began teaching the Puppy Preschool at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in Dec 2015. Lizzie is enjoying the study and the hands on experience with Puppy Preschool.

Lizzie has had many animals during her life time, at the moment she has 4 cats (Moo Cow, Donut, Chilli and Chicken), and a Labrador cross (Sonny).

Lachlan De Giorgio Lachlan started work at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in December 2017 after completing a week of work experience.

Lachlan is currently in year 11 at high school and is really interested in agriculture and all things to do with animals.

He has a dog named Chloe and a bird named Bob. Lachlan loves playing sport.

He always looks forward to coming to work to help people and see smiles on faces. Lachlan is excited to be part of the team.

Rachel Galdes Rachel graduated as a Veterinary Nurse in December 2012 at Richmond TAFE. She enjoys spending time with her friends and family when she is not at work. Rachel has a much loved Labrador Molly, and Jinx the cat.

Rachel teaches the Puppy Preschool at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital.

Jessica Hollman Jessica completed TAFE work experience with us and joined our team in Jan 2015 as a kennel hand.

Jessica completed the Veterinary Nursing Certificate IV in July

Riley Deahm Riley is currently completing her Certificate IV in veterinary nursing at Richmond TAFE. She started her work placement at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in May 2018 and joined our team in July 2018 as a Kennel Hand.

Riley has a naughty Labrador named Baxter, and a cat named Waffles.

Riley has always been very passionate about the animal industry.

Riley also enjoys working with the other staff members at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital.

Taking our Faith on the basis of knowledge in stating texts from the Bible or emphasizing Church dogma - this is a misunderstanding of what is meant by faith. To see faith as simply an act of the will often on the basis of insufficient evidence seen in the context of a duty in living, this again is a misunderstanding of faith. If trust and complete reliance commits a person to the Christian message then knowledge, will and experience gives deeper meaning to the basic question ‘who am I?’ God is at the heart of all religion and is defined in a variety of ways both in monotheism and polytheism. For the Christian faith is centred in the God of Jesus Christ. Now some 600 years before Christ, a Hebrew Prophet named Micah wrote this meditation

which gives a glimpse of what it means to trust and in doing so strengthens our faith: “With what will I come before the Lord and bow down before the exalted God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with a thousand rams? With ten thousand rivers of oil?

Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgressions? The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has showed you O man what is good and what does the Lord require of you? : to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly before your God�.

As such faith over the past 2000 years plus, has given in the message of Jesus Christ, a deeper appreciation and insight into understanding not only ourselves, but also of life and death and the vastness and intricacy of the universe in which we live.
