Our Local Champion Jordan Springs’ MMA fighter Arlene Blencowe has just returned home victorious from California in the US after a successful fight against American Amber Leibrock in Bellator 206, staking her claim as the number one contender in the Featherweight division.

The mother of two is enjoying some well-deserved time back home with her family after a rigorous training regime which began in July at Tiger Muay Thai in Thailand, followed by Zoo Fitness and Sydney West Martial Arts at home.

“There’s no place like home! It doesn’t matter where I am in the world, I can’t wait to get back home. I’m grateful for having an amazing partner and two amazing kids. They all help me so much” Arlene told the Jordan Springs Gazette.

Blencowe lists winning two world boxing championships and getting the opportunity to be the main event fight in Bellator and fight for the world title last year (losing controversially in a split decision) as some of her many career highlights. “I’ve tested myself in every possible way as a person and an athlete throughout my almost 10-year career. I could write a book on all my experiences and lessons I’ve learnt” said Arlene.

For now, Arlene has no plans for her next fight, although she is keeping her eye on a bout between two fighters in her division in December. She’ll continue to train locally for her next fight. “I enjoy doing my runs around the lake. I’ve mapped out a few different runs around Jordan Springs, depending on the purpose of the run. Remembrance Day – Lest We Forget Remembrance Day in Australia will be a day of significance this year.

Sunday the 11th of November marks the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice, which ended the First World War in 1918.

In 1997, Governor-General William Deane issued a formal proclamation that would declare the 11th of November to be Remembrance Day. The proclamation urged all Australians to observe one minutes silence at 11:00am on the 11th of November each year. Today, the loss of Australian lives from all wars and conflicts across the world are honoured on Remembrance Day. In other allied countries around the world such as New Zealand, Canada and the United States, the 11th of November is known as Armistice Day. This is a day to remember those who died in the First World War. In Australia, flags are flown at half-mast as a sign of mourning and respect on Remembrance Day. Services across the country are held at war memorials at 11:00am, where the ‘Last Post’ is played by a bugler and one minutes silence is observed.

On Remembrance Day in 1993, Australia commemorated the day by laying to rest an Unknown Soldier in the Hall of Memory at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. The Unknown Soldier was buried in a coffin made from Tasmanian Blackwood with his bayonet and a spring of wattle by him.

Red poppies are worn on items of clothing on the 11th of November to remember those who died during war. Poppies were amongst the first flowers that came from the battlefields of northern France and Belgium during the First World War. Sprigs of rosemary are also worn on Remembrance Day and ANZAC Day. Ropes Crossing Community Garden The S355 Hub Committee is considering the possibility of developing a Community Garden in the grounds of the Ropes Crossing Hub. They are calling for community interest. This is a great opportunity for interested community members to join in with the community garden. Get to know your neighbours, learn and share skills in growing vegetables, flowers, fruit trees, herbs and what to do with them once they do grow. This is a great way to join in with gardening if there is not enough room at home, you live in a unit or you travel a lot. Gardeners share the care of the garden and share the produce grown. Produce harvested is grown with no nasty chemicals and no food miles (the long distances food travels from grower to the markets, shops and to your home).

Gardening is a good outdoor activity and provides light exercise.

Skills in gardening are welcomed but not necessary. There are a variety of different tasks and roles that people can contribute in addition to caring for the garden. This includes helping with the committee, minding the tea/coffee money, keeping the minutes from meetings, updating the group’s Facebook page (if they want one) and organising sponsorship from organisations and businesses (like Bunnings).

Jordan Springs Probus Club

The Club was formed to support the Probus values of supporting and promoting Friendship, Fellowship and Fun in retirement. We are actively seeking new members from Jordan Springs and surrounding suburbs and currently there is no waiting list for applications.

The speaker for last month was from Nepean Food Service.

This is a not-for-profit organisation which is a member of the NSW Meals on Wheels association, servicing people in the Penrith Local Government area and the suburbs of Silverdale and Warragamba. The presenter took some time discussing the services offered and their vision to connect people to their local communities and help them maintain an independent and healthy lifestyle. Clayton Clancy – War Horse During World War II, over 400,000 horses were sent into battle with only one horse making it home. Australian war horses were affectionately termed “Walers” and were known for their qualities of hardiness, stamina and frugality combined with natural courage and intelligence.

Local resident Teresa Tidball’s horse, Clayton Clancy, is a descendent of war horse heritage.

Teresa first met Clancy at the beginning of this year at a cattle station in a remote rural community in Western Queensland. The station was suffering from a 7-year drought, which resulted in them reducing their stock. Clancy was almost 4 years old and struggling to maintain condition.

Upon Teresa meeting him, it was love at first sight. Clancy had the calm, willing temperament that is typical of Waler horses.

Once in Penrith, it took several months of conditioning to build Clancy’s drought-starved state back to that of a riding horse. Clancy is now confident in his new environment and Teresa decided to enter him into the Waler Horse Society of Australia, Inc.’s High Points Competition for Versatility.

This competition showcases the versatility of the breed and runs from July 2018 to June 2019. Points are accumulated by going out and trying different disciplines, such as trail riding, showing, dressage, and cattle work.

Teresa and Clancy have so far attended over 12 events in 9 different categories. Teresa is looking for local businesses that would like to sponsor Clancy in this competition. Champions All Around The physios at The Healthy Body Company are not just champions at Physiotherapy.

Who could imagine that one small team could include an expert in martial arts, a national dance champion and a high-level touch footy player?

Renee Coleman has been training in martial arts her whole life. Renee is a third Dan black belt in Tae Kwon Do. To achieve this level requires rigorous testing and many years of training. She is one of few women to achieve this level, having achieved her third Dan at 18.

In addition to Tae Kwon Do, Renee is also a purple belt in Brazilian Ju Jitsu. She is newer to this sport and is rapidly working her way towards a black belt.

Muay Thai, is essentially Thai kickboxing, an intense sport requiring rigorous training. Renee recently spent a week in Thailand training with professional athletes. Videos of her experience can be found on Instagram @physiowarrior.

“My achievements in martial arts are part of a lifelong commitment to relentless discipline. I bring this same discipline to my work, ensuring that my patients have the best outcomes possible” explained Renee.

In her “spare time” and for time out, Renee teaches and practices yoga.

Nathan Duguid, who goes by the handle @dogoodphysio, is

a graduate of Western Sydney University. He was included in the Dean’s List twice, and on graduation was awarded Honours in Physiotherapy. Nathan is a Penrith local, having attended St Dominic’s College where he was the Sports Prefect.

Nathan is a representative level touch football player. He has played in the National Touch League for Sydney Mets and for Penrith in Division 1 of the Vawdon Cup. Nathan is now committed to linking his two great passions, fitness and physiotherapy.

“As a touch footy player, I have experienced my share of injuries, and it was my experience with the physiotherapists that helped ignite my interest in physiotherapy as a career” said Nathan.

Emily Marks has been dancing her whole life. Emily was taken to see The Lord of the Dance as a young girl and was immediately mesmerised by the skill of the dancers, and the spectacle. Emily joined a local dance school when she was 4 years old and has never looked back.

Emily has competed at State and National level in Irish Dance since the age of 8. As a soloist, she has achieved top 10 results, and with her team from the Penrith Gaels Maher School of Irish Dance, she is a National Champion. This year, Emily as a soloist finished 5th in the NSW event, and 17th at Nationals.

This sport requires incredible dedication and athleticism with years of commitment. Emily has qualified for the World Championships in North Carolina in 2019.

We all want our kids to do well and to be well. One of the things that determines social and emotional wellbeing is “resilience”. Resilience is regarded as the ability of an individual to access resources to prevent, minimise, or overcome hardship.

My favourite definition of resilience comes from a draft paper titled “Whole School Matters” (September, 2008)…

“The capacity to deal constructively with change or challenge, allowing the person to maintain or re-establish their social and emotional wellbeing in the face of difficult events. It involves thoughts, feelings, and actions.”

The more protective factors a child has, the more resilient the child will be. The protective factors are environments which provide: a sense of connection and belonging; physical and emotional safety; warm, caring and supportive relationships; and the opportunity for and recognition of achievement.

Resilience is a complex interaction of relationships, genetics and environmental factors (family, school, work, society).

The optimal environment for children is a positive one with warm reciprocal relationships, realistic expectations, boundaries and limits, and assertive discipline. Children learn resilience through feeling heard and understood, and feeling that they belong. The supports in a child’s environment build inner strengths as children learn coping skills, and about feelings and how to manage them, within the context of relationships with significant others.

There is a lot of talk these days about teaching resilience to children in school. Schools are excellent places for children to experience the protective factors mentioned above. However, we can’t treat resilience as something that our children must learn, like they learn maths, or the rules of whichever sport they choose to play. Parents are their child’s first teachers and there needs to be a greater focus on parents learning positive parenting skills and providing an environment in which our children grow their resilience skills, rather than placing the onus on children to learn resilience.

As the weather heats up, the best thing a parent can do to keep their child safer around water is to make sure they start Learn to Swim classes as soon as possible. Swim Australia recommends starting lessons from 6 months, but you should practice early water familiarisation before this. It is important to make sure your baby has regular baths and showers, and becomes comfortable with the sensation of water being trickled and then poured over their head. Your 6 month old will then accept the water more readily, and with much less fear, than a child who has not had this exposure.

Safety was always my main motivation to get my children into lessons early, however in recent years a Griffith University study has proven that there are many other benefits for babies, including the development of gross motor skills and improved strength, co-ordination and balance. Swimming strengthens your baby on the inside, helping to develop their muscles and joints, improving the strength of their heart and lungs, and helps to develop their brain. Plus it’s fun!

Warm water combined with gentle exercise will relax your baby, encourage the release of mood boosting chemicals, and stimulate the child’s appetite, with many parents reporting that their babies usually eat and sleep better after swimming.

What is BYOD? BYOD stands for Bring Your Own Device. In educational settings, the initiative centres around taking a device, such as a laptop or tablet, to school for learning purposes. This concept has been around for over five years now and has been met with mixed opinions and concerns. Undeniably, however, is the need for new models of learning given the availability of personal mobile devices and other technology in the 21st century. According to the NSW Department of Education (2018), “Schools are in a position to harness students’ connection to their own personal mobile devices for the purpose of developing 21st century learning skills and for fostering digital literacy, fluency and citizenship in a safe environment”.

Apart from primarily endeavouring to integrate technology more extensively in education to promote collaborative, personalised and accessible options for learning, economics plays a huge role in the argument for the Bring Your Own Device program. Technology investments are expensive for schools, especially given the probability of needing to update resources as they become obsolete after a few years. With students bringing their own personal devices, the school can then redirect funding to other areas in technology, including the purchase and maintenance of interactive whiteboards.

BYOD also encourages students to take responsibility for their learning, manage their own tasks and collaborate with others. Every school implementing this initiative should have a BYOD Policy and students made aware of expectations for appropriate online behaviour, including social media use. Most of these policies align directly with school welfare policies of expected behaviour, which in turn also address matters such as cyberbullying.

The biggest concerns surrounding the BYOD Program are the possible distraction that can occur with technology being so readily available to students in the classroom and the possible inequity of students from lower socio-economic backgrounds that cannot afford to purchase the devices in the first place. Most NSW schools have been proactive in addressing these concerns with policies, procedures and alternative arrangements put in place to ensure BYOD is successful for all students. 10-Minute Summer Gnocchi and Prawn Salad Ingredients 500g packet gnocchi 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 80g green beans, trimmed 2 x 35g sachets basil pesto finishing drizzle 2 tablespoons lemon juice 120g bag baby French kale leaves 500g cooked king prawns, peeled, deveined, tails intact 200g punnet perino duet tomatoes, halved 4 red radishes, sliced

Preparation 1. Cook gnocchi in a saucepan of boiling salted water for 2 minutes or until gnocchi rise to the top. Drain.

2. Heat oil in a large frying pan over high heat. Cook gnocchi, stirring occasionally for 2 to 3 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from heat. Season with salt and pepper.

Cool 5 minutes.

3. Meanwhile, place beans in a bowl. Cover with boiling water.

Stand 2 minutes. Drain. Combine pesto and lemon juice.

4. Toss gnocchi, beans, kale, prawns, tomato and radish together in a large bowl. Divide among serving bowls.

Quick Nutella Mousse 100g dark chocolate, chopped 300ml thickened cream, chilled 1/2 cup (165g) Nutella Crumbled Cadbury Flake chocolate bar, to serve Preparation 1. Place dark chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water (make sure bowl doesn’t touch the water).

Stir with a metal spoon for 3-4 mins or until chocolate just melts. Set aside for 5 mins to cool slightly.

2. Use an electric mixer to whisk the cream in a large bowl until soft peaks form. Add the Nutella and whisk until the mixture is just combined. Add the melted chocolate. Use a large metal spoon to gently marble.

In the first week of the October school holidays, Ropes Crossing Church ran ‘4 FAMILIES’ every morning at the Ropes Crossing Community Hub. 77 children and their families came throughout the week where they participated in games, make your own morning tea, music, drama, Bible and craft. It was great to see so many families from the community coming together and enjoying each other’s company.

A very special event took place earlier this month, called ‘blu Ropes’. ‘blu Ropes’ was an evening of blues music with local musicians and the band ‘PBT’. Held on the Ropes Crossing Village Green on Saturday 3 November, what an amazing night that families, friends and neighbours enjoyed together with music and a sausage sizzle.

Those who attended were also invited to Ropes Crossing Church with an invitation extended to the entire community.

They meet at Ropes Crossing Public School on Sundays at 10:30 am.

Watch Out - Snakes Are Out and About!!

With the warmer weather upon us, snakes are coming out of hibernation.

Your dog or cat may see a snake moving in the yard and its first instinct is to chase it.

The snake may attack and bite your pet as a form of defence.

Signs of snake envenomation includes: muscular weakness, wobbliness or paralysis, increased respiratory effort, trembling, salivation, vomiting, slower blood clotting time, bruising, blood in the urine, and abnormal neurological signs (including collapse, seizure, tremors, pupil enlargement).

If you are concerned that your pet has been bitten by a snake, call us immediately.

The sooner the snake anti venom is given, then higher the chance of survival.

Keeping Your Pets Safe Over Summer With the weather warming up it is important to look after your pets: • Provide shelter for your pets, so they get away from direct sunlight. • Provide plenty of water. Animals do not sweat like humans and they rely on the evaporation of the water in their mouths to cool themselves down. So they need extra water so they do not overheat. • Provide extra water sources in case they are spilled. • Provide kiddy pools so your pet can lay in the water. • Bring your pets indoors with air conditioning, if possible. • Consider day boarding in air conditioning. • Avoid exercising your pets during the heat of the day.

Signs of Heat Stroke Common signs include: • Incessant panting; Drooling, salivating; Agitation, restlessness; Very red or pale gums; Bright red tongue; Increased heart rate; Breathing distress; Vomiting, Diarrhoea (possibly with blood); Signs of mental confusion, delirium; Dizziness, staggering; Lethargy; weakness; Muscle tremors; Seizures; Collapsing and lying down; Little to no urine production; Coma or Death.

Death is one of the most exacting events in life affecting the emotions and mental activity in coming to terms with its reality.

Death in itself, being part of the cycle of life provides a vast field for contemplation, seeking answers, seeking reasons.

Religious belief down through the ages has been attractive because it has directed itself to attempt to provide answers, give reasons.

Basically in dying the individual can be confronted with a sudden or if not slow demise. In the majority of situations death is rarely considered in terms that all of us from birth are growing towards death. Those who mourn the loss of a loved one, when time and words have little comforting effect, can gain strength in recognizing that they themselves are growing towards the reality of dying. It is this recognition that enables the prayer ‘that I may have a good death’ to become a comfort [from the

Latin ‘to make strong’] in embracing the emotive and mental effects of death.

All Saints Day is celebrated by the Church each November. Its origin can be found around 100 CE when St Gregory of Pontus, in what was known as Asia Minor, observed a festival known as All Martyrs. St Chrysostom, who died in 407 CE also refers to this festival. In the latter part of the 8th century, All Saints Day was held in Churches throughout England, Ireland, France and Germany with some historians arguing that it began in Ireland.

By 835 CE November 1st became the festival date throughout Europe.

It is in this Festival that Christian belief expresses the total concept of the Church (the living and the dead) the beautiful Hope: all things are summed in Jesus the Christ in the promise of life eternal.
