Ropes Crossing Firefighters Ready to Open Doors to the Community Firefighters will open the doors to hundreds of fire stations across NSW on Saturday, 18 May for the Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Open Day, inviting people to learn more about Australia’s largest urban fire and rescue service.

Ropes Crossing Fire Station will be open from 10am to 2pm, delivering a range of free activities including firefighting demonstrations, station tours and safety presentations.

Families can also see fire trucks and firefighting and rescue equipment up close and chat to local firefighters about the critical work they do to keep communities safe.

FRNSW Commissioner, Paul Baxter said Open Day was an opportunity to show people that FRNSW firefighters do so much more than fight fires.

“Our firefighters do fight fires and save people from burning buildings, but our mission and our capabilities extend far beyond fire response” he said.

“From road crashes, hazardous material incidents and natural disasters to urban search and rescue and humanitarian relief, our firefighters are prepared for anything and ready to help anyone, anytime, anywhere”.

Commissioner Baxter said Open Day was also a great time to talk to the experts about home fire safety in the lead up to winter.

“We see a 10% increase in the number of home fires during the winter months, with more fires starting in bedrooms and loungerooms due to things like heaters and electric blankets” he said.

“Come and meet the team that’s prepared for anything on Open Day and learn how to keep your family safe from fire and other emergencies”.

In scripture, it is recorded that Jesus disappeared from the sight of his followers. This recorded event became known in history as the Ascension and became tradition within Christian teaching.

On reflection, the recorded event presents some difficulties.

The followers believed in a three tier universe within heaven above and hell below earth. This concept is no longer tenable: there is only ‘out there’ with gravity keeping everything in place.

While astronomy raises more questions than answers (and this science is one of the most challenging amongst all sciences), it is in celebrating in worship the Ascension that a particular dimension is added. That dimension is the ‘great unknown’ giving meaning and understanding as to why there is life, why there is this wonderful and almost incomprehensible universe.

Yet in common parlance we still ‘look up’ to space. This tests the credibility of our ability to apply reason in accepting the recorded event.

To Jesus’ followers it gave conviction that our total humanity was received into the totality of the life of the Holy Trinity: the Father who created, the Son who cleared the gulf between humanity’s capability and weakness and separation from that capability, and the Holy Spirit that confirms or ‘makes strong’.

Humanity’s capability is the eternal ‘now’. God is the eternal Trinity allowing the Holy Spirit to make strong so that we are enabled to be and in this new found freedom is the realisation that to depreciate our capability is to depreciate the love of God. One factor is that in placing the Ascension within the context of faith, it is seen as the completion of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus the Christ. By this reason allows answers to be provided and enhances understanding and allows the created to honour the Creator.

to all the Mums & Grandmothers

Memories of Mum Mother’s Day is just around the corner and although this is usually a time of celebration, it isn’t always a joyous time for everyone. For those who are not fortunate enough to have their mum around to spoil, spend the day with, call or text, the day can be somewhat challenging and isolating.

Thankfully, there is a brand new organisation that supports and assists Australian girls and women whose mums have sadly passed away.

Motherless Daughters Australia is a not for profit organisation that was founded by two Victorian women, who had also lost their mum, with the hope of making a difference to the lives of those who experience mother loss.

The organisation connects and unites women in the same shoes through a supportive online platform and through events and functions to facilitate new friendships and support networks. There is talk of future plans to extend their supportive reach to sons and fathers.

Whilst Motherless Daughters Australia is there to support women through the everyday and life’s major milestones, they know that receiving comfort and support during the lead up to Mother’s Day and on Mother’s Day is also very important and can be very therapeutic.

The annual and signature event hosted by the not for profit organisation is a series of pre Mother’s Day High Teas which will run in four major cities this year – one is in Sydney on Sunday 5th May. It’s a lovely afternoon and opportunity to meet and mingle with other motherless daughters during the lead up to Mother’s Day. A chance to talk to those who ‘get it’ and who show the utmost empathy and compassion in a way that is purely indescribable unless you’ve experienced it.

Women enjoy a glass of champagne, indulge in delicious food and engage in some of the most uplifting, reassuring and validating conversions whilst honouring their mum and making some special connections.

“That’s what the Good Neighbour program is about. Providing opportunities and supporting residents to reach out and build those relationships and friendships with their neighbours” Cr Fowler continued.

“It’s also important for our safety and wellbeing. Good relationships transform communities and knowing our neighbours makes us all safer and feel better because social connections help prevent loneliness, isolation and depression.

“It can be hard to know where to start, whether you’re new to Penrith or you’ve lived here all your life. Good Neighbour doesn’t do the work for you, but it does give you a place to start and some access to some great resources to throw a neighbourhood get together” he concluded.

Good Neighbour is available to everyone in the Penrith LGA. All you need to do is fill in a short form, and then they will help you to host your own neighbourhood gettogether.

It can be anything you want – a small get together in the front yard, a small street party or a gathering at your local park, it’s up to you! The key is to keep it local enough so you can connect with people in your neighbourhood.

With Good Neighbour you’ll have access to invitation templates, a guide to help you plan and free hire of an event kit including giant games.

A Lifetime of Yoga Local Judy Morgan recently celebrated her 80th birthday last month. It was also an amazing milestone for the yoga teacher, who still teaches today at Living Beautifully, that began more than half a century ago.

Judy began learning yoga in Melbourne 60 years ago and began teaching 5 years later. “I was never very good at sport and when I found yoga, I fell in love with the practice of yoga postures, breathing and relaxation. I discovered my flexibility increased, I was able to breathe better, feel more relaxed and generally feel good about myself” she reflected.

In the beginning of her teaching career, it was difficult to buy books on yoga or find ways to increase her knowledge.

The students came to the class to be fit and well and most were women. In the 1970’s, she introduced meditation to her classes for women and men, which became very popular. From the 1960’s, there were very few classes and teachers. Fast forward to now and there are many yoga classes in studios, halls and gyms offering many types of yoga to suit the needs of different people.

So, what has motivated Judy to continue as a yoga teacher all these years later? “My motivation is to be a part of the community we have at Living Beautifully and the joy I experience seeing yoga students becoming successful yoga teachers. Being able to pass on my knowledge and experience to others. Also, being able to follow my passion to practice yoga and meditation and feeling blessed that yoga has given me strength and peace of mind in good and not so good times over the last 60 years” she said.

With a lifetime of yoga, Judy explained some of her favourite memories, “In the 1970’s, I lived in Townsville and travelled to different places in Queensland lecturing and teaching. I’d fly to Hughenden out west, every two months teaching children in the day and adults in the night and leaving class plans for them to go on with until my next visit two months later. They were always so warm, generous and appreciated my visits. Going to Seattle in the US for six weeks as guest lecturer and teacher to a new yoga group was great. And of course, how could I forget my 80th birthday celebration in April this year. It was given to me by Living Beautifully yoga teachers, Sari, Jodie, Renee and Viki and the Bhakti Dharsan yoga band from the Blue Mountains”.

Pineapple Upside-Down Cake

mum's favourite

Ingredients 440g can pineapple slices in juice 1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar 90g butter, softened 1/2 cup caster sugar 2 eggs, lightly beaten 1 1/4 cups selfraising flour, sifted

Method 1. Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced. Grease a 6cmdeep, 20cm (base) round ring pan. Line base with baking paper.

2. Drain pineapple, reserving 2 tablespoons juice. Cut pineapple in half.

3. Sprinkle brown sugar over base of baking upside-down prepared pan. Arrange pineapple, just touching, over sugar.

4. Using an electric mixer, beat butter and caster sugar for 3 minutes or until light and fluffy. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating after each addition.

5. Add flour and reserved pineapple juice. Stir to combine.

Spread mixture over pineapple. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until a skewer inserted in cake comes out clean. Stand in pan for 5 minutes. Turn out onto a wire rack to cool. Serve.

Lung Disease doesn’t Discriminate The month of May is Lung Health Awareness Month.

Lung disease affects almost 1 in 3 Australians and is responsible for 1 in 7 deaths, however many people tend to ignore the signs and symptoms, often not doing anything about it for far too long. We are all are used to thinking about our heart and skin health, but our lungs are equally important.

It’s time we made our lung health a priority as well.

This Lung Health Awareness Month, Lung Foundation Australia is urging Australians to stop guessing what may be causing symptoms like breathlessness or fatigue, and to learn how to recognise and act upon the symptoms of lung disease.

Most of us never stop to think about our breathing, it’s just something we do. Research shows that almost half (46%) of all Australians rarely or never think about their lung health.

Despite this, almost two-thirds of Australians (68%) reported that they have experienced at least one lung related health issue.

There are a few simple things you can do to help look after your lung health: • Make your life a smoke-free zone by quitting smoking and/or reducing your exposure to second hand smoke.

• Wear appropriate protective equipment if you work in environments that expose you to the inhalation of dust, gas, fumes or chemicals.

• Protect yourself from influenza and pneumonia by having the vaccinations.

• Exercise regularly and have a healthy diet.

• Practice good hand hygiene to minimise the spread of germs.

The Club was formed under the Probus values of supporting and promoting Friendship, Fellowship and Fun in retirement.

The Tuesday lunch for April was held at Hogs Breath Penrith with a comfortable 18 members in attendance. The April event included a trip to Wildwood Gardens at Bilpin with morning tea, lunch and entry to the gardens. The trip rounded off with a visit to a local cider brewery.

April also saw the inaugural meeting of a craft club with several members bringing a variety of projects along to share and discuss with the group. This will hopefully develop into a popular sub-group of the club.

Jordan Springs’ Swati Sharma knows how to decorate a cake.

In four short years, the talented cake artist and owner of ‘Spot on Cakes’ has made some of the most amazing creations that you could only dream about.

Local mother Swati has always been a creative person, since her early days at school. She would later take up painting as a hobby, before cake decorating.

“Little did I know that I would end up as a cake decorator or cake artist. As soon as I finished my cake decorating classes back in India (that too as a hobby), we moved to Australia, where my only pass time was to watch cake decorating videos” Swati explained.

“One of my friends gave me a chance to bake a cake and cupcakes for her daughter’s birthday. It was a blessing in disguise.

My husband started my Facebook business page and there was no turning back” she added.

Since then, Swati has taken her cake creations to a whole new level. This includes a burger and Coke bottle cake, 3D Converse shoe cake, BB-8 Star Wars cake, 3D teddy bear cake, flower basket cake and her most challenging yet, which was a 5-tier buttercream cake for 350 guests! With this cake, she had to plan the serving size for each amount of serves, decide flavours for each tier and create a sturdy inner structure that would allow for the cake to be transported an hour away. Despite all this, she said it was all worth it.

Her favourite cakes to make are novelty, sculpted or trending buttercream cakes. She loves making cakes for her kids, where she can express her creativity with everything from flavours to design. “Basic is boring to me” quipped Swati.

Swati plans to one day open a shop, where she can also start cake baking and decorating classes and pass on her knowledge and experience to budding cake decorators.

It’s a story that demonstrates the difference between parenting through connection and using punitive discipline.

It was a reality show made in America. I cannot recall the name of the show, something like “Worlds Apart”.

It was a series where an American family would leave their modern, fast-paced, disconnected, frozen dinner every night style of life, and go for a week to live in a remote village overseas.

On one of these shows, a family of Mum, Dad, and three children, went to a small and remote village in one of the African nations. The villagers lived a traditional life in every way, in the desert with their cattle. There was one well in the village to provide drinking water for everyone.

Somehow, one of the American boys, perhaps about 8 years old, did something to contaminate the drinking water in the well. Thus, the women of the village had to walk with their children and babies many hours to retrieve drinking water in pots on their heads.

How do you think the villagers responded to this incident?

After the incident, the American parents were very angry and embarassed at their son’s actions. The village chief was a very kind and gentle man. The villagers were very kind and gentle.

The chief asked the boy to walk with him. They walked into the desert together.

When the chief and the boy returned maybe an hour later, the American parents asked their son what the chief had said to him. The boy said that the chief said nothing and he himself had said nothing but they just walked together. Then the boy broke down and sobbed his heart out. The family asked the chief if that’s how he sorts out problems in the village, and he replied that he takes people for a walk in the desert, saying something like “we go out and come back”.

After ensuring their survival needs are met, humans have a fundamental need to belong. In this village, survival and belonging were regarded as the same.

The Lakes Christian College chose a significant day for their Autumn Fair when setting the date for Saturday, 18th May. As families head to the election polls, they are encouraged to stop by the College and enjoy a range of activities for all the family. How to Prepare for NAPLAN (it’s not what you think) The very mention of the acronym NAPLAN, which stands for National Assessment Program – Literacy And Numeracy, can evoke a myriad of emotions amongst parents, teachers and students. The controversial series of tests covering skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation and numeracy has been around since 2008 and targets students in year 3, 5, 7 and 9.

The results of NAPLAN are designed to drive improvements in student learning and create accountability within schools. Whilst this may be true from the perspective of ACARA (Australian Curriculum and Assessment Reporting Authority), this is not always the perspective and experience of those involved in the process. Parents and teachers have seen a different side to the tests with some schools ‘teaching to the test’ in a bid to gain higher marks in order to market their school as top performing and offering a better education to those which did not perform as well.

Some parents have even employed private coaching to encourage their child to achieve better results, creating a culture of extreme competitiveness and a build-up of anxiety amid students. These issues cannot be ignored and whilst parents have the option of withdrawing their children from sitting the test, others are fighting to have it removed altogether.

Practically, however, what can we do to prepare our children for this in the best way possible? The answer is simple - remind them of what the tests are designed to do and reduce the stigma and anxiety around the test by placing little importance on their individual achievements but rather focusing on the holistic view of school improvement. If we, as parents or teachers, take a stand and refuse to get caught up in the competitive nature that has evolved from misuse of this test, it will demonstrate the practical use of NAPLAN for taking a snapshot of learning at the time at which the tests were taken. Learning is fluent. Children will have bad days, forget things and fluke things. They will be clever and think outside the square. Some things cannot be measured through a test and some things can. Take NAPLAN with a grain of salt and encourage your child to treat it like any other test they take at school. Remember, it is merely a snapshot.

Computer Classes for Seniors

Computer classes for seniors are conducted by U3A, each week at the Jordan Springs Community Centre, currently on Tuesdays.

The classes are designed to help participants gain the skills and knowledge required to operate a computer, perform common basic tasks and assist in acquiring the technical skills required for everyday life in this technological age.

The courses start with a basic understanding of a computer and how it works, hardware and software. They will cover applications such as internet, e-mail, Microsoft Office (WORD, EXCEL and POWERPOINT), saving documents, filing and naming documents/photos etc.

They have classes for absolute beginners and also for those who are have some computing knowledge.

Class numbers are limited; U3A has some computers available or participants may bring their own computers.

We are Relocating to Bigger Premises We will be relocating to bigger premises in the next month.

We will be located on the same road as we are currently on, Wentworth Road, but just further down the road.

The new premises have been renovated to accommodate a veterinary hospital. The premises are huge! There are double brick walls, 3m high ceilings and a green bull nosed verandah around the front of the building.

We will even have a concrete driveway and carpark! There will still be an off leash park in the front yard for you and your dogs to enjoy.

We can’t wait!!!!!

Camille purchased the veterinary hospital business nearly 9 years ago and there has been steady and continual growth of the business in this time.

We started off with 4 staff and have grown to 16 staff members. We have definitely outgrown the current premises!

We are unsure of the date of the relocation at this time, as there is still some work to be completed. We will let you know as soon as we know.

We are so excited, we cannot wait for you to visit our large country practice!
