The Regional Final of the long running Youth of the Year Program will be held locally for the first time, at Leonay Golf Club on Sunday 3rd March.

The contestants are Connor Thorpe representing St Paul’s Grammar sponsored by Emu Plains Lions Club, Emma Hogan of Glenmore Park representing Glenmore Park High School and sponsored by Cambridge Park Lions Club and Lilly-Rose Saliba of South Penrith, representing Caroline Chisholm College and sponsored by Penrith Lions Club.

Each of the contestants will undergo a 40-minute interview before 3 judges, followed by a public speaking section before Lions from all three Clubs as well as families and supporters.

The winner will move on to the District Final to be held at Bankstown on Saturday, 23rd March.

Strikers Give Back to Local School The Ropes Crossing Strikers FC have donated $1,500 to Ropes Crossing Public School, after the local club successfully ran free football clinics over three days to all the students recently.

For the second year running, the partnership saw volunteers from the Ropes Crossing Strikers FC attend the school to assist with the program. This year the program reached over 800 students at the school, who were taught basic football skills including dribbling, shooting and game play. The purpose of the clinics were to promote a healthy active lifestyle to students and to give them a fun introduction to football.

“As a club, we donated $1,500 to the school. $1,000 of this money will be used by the school to subsidise the cost of sports buses each week for PSSA sports. The remaining $500 is split up and used to reward the students who excel throughout the year. These funds will help subsidise the cost of that students chosen sporting activity” said Adam Hartas from the Ropes Crossing Strikers FC. The club are currently formulating a business plan to move forward over the next 3-5 years, which includes the school’s program as one of the major components. Their dream is to grow and push the program out to the schools. “The biggest hurdle we face with growing the school program is having the people available to go out to the schools and run it. Currently, we have some club coaches, players and committee members taking time off work and volunteering their time to run the clinics for us” explained Hartas.

The Ropes Crossing Strikers FC are also looking to implement a new in-house program that will help develop their players. This program will be introduced this year as development squads, where they have hired qualified coaches to come in and coach a couple of teams to help players who want to excel to the next level of football.

At present, they run an in-house academy, where they have partnered with a local football academy to provide skills training for players of all ages to join. This program has been in place for the past two years and has seen several players progress from grassroots football to representative football within the Blacktown and Nepean regions.

Man Charged Over Alleged Historical Sex Abuse of Two Boys in his Care A man has been charged following an investigation into historical sexual abuse of two boys while in his care in the Sydney Metropolitan area.

In July 2016, detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad commenced an investigation following reports a 15-year-old boy had been sexually abused by a male carer earlier that year.

As part of their inquiries, detectives also spoke with a boy who had reported he was sexually abused by a mentor while in care between 2006 and 2008, when he was aged 11.

Following extensive investigations, detectives arrested an 83-year-old man at a home at Cranebrook last month.

He was taken to Penrith Police Station and charged with procure child under 14 years for pornographic purposes, aggravated indecent assault-victim under the age of 16 years, and sexual intercourse with person under care-aged 16-17.

The man was refused bail and appeared at Penrith Local Court, where he was formally refused bail to re-appear at the same court on Friday 1 March 2019.

The Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad is comprised of detectives who are specially trained to investigate matters against children and adults, including sexual assault, serious physical abuse, and extreme cases of neglect.

Tradition plays an important role in life. However there is a growing tendency of commercialization to exploit. Supermarkets are skilled in promoting a product by placing to induce spending. Two examples of Christian tradition that have paid dearly by their exploitation for profit. Recently the traditional hot cross bun now appears for sale with no direct connection with Easter.

Traditionally the cross bun was bitter to taste and eaten not as delight but eaten to bring to memory the crucifixion of Jesus the Christ. It is bitter to recall the bitter suffering experienced. How many people buying the buns really know its origin and purpose?

The giving of a gift at Christmas is another tradition that has been ‘captured’ by retailers to make a profit. Santa Clauses abound everywhere capturing the imagination of children [and also adults]. It was an American company that exploited this concept and marketing was quick to seize on its money making potential. But here again the tradition is lost. Saint Nickolas in history became recognized for his practice of giving gifts to the poor and homeless in his day. Scholars argue that St Nickolas was Turkish, others that he originated in what is now known as Belgium. His practice was slowly adopted over the years. Essentially it was encouraged among the Christian communities to give a simple gift to remind individuals that they are part of humanity and to place into effect the commandment to ‘Love God; Love Humanity’ This wonderful commandment has been ignored time and time again through history. However when practiced (and there are many examples) it brings about the strength and beauty of living.

So traditions can have a positive contribution such as the giving of gifts and eating a hot cross bun.

Jordan Springs Public School Construction Begins Western Sydney resident and member of the NSW Legislative Council Shayne Mallard MP, together with Liberal candidate for Londonderry Belinda Hill, officially launched construction works for the new $55 million Jordan Springs Public School last month.

“This new school will take 600 students with the capacity to extend to 1000 students in the future” Shayne said. “It will be a stateof-the-art facility, fully air conditioned and open for enrolments in 2021”.

Shayne Mallard was joined by the Liberal candidate for Londonderry Belinda Hill who welcomed the commencement of construction.

“As I move around the community of Jordan Springs, I hear the excitement from the families about the new school in their community” Belinda said.

“Contrary to some misinformation, Jordan Springs Public School was slated to be delivered in 2021 and will be open on time”.

The new school is part of the NSW Government’s record $6 billion school building program to deliver more than 170 new and upgraded schools, which also includes a new school at Wilton Junction.

Education Minister Rob Stokes said the Liberal and National Government’s record investment in schools was in stark contrast to Labor’s.

“The last time Labor was in power, they shut down 90 schools, resulting in a loss of more than 500 classrooms and 2000 student places” he said.

In addition to the record-breaking school building program, the NSW Liberals and Nationals Government has committed an unprecedented investment to eliminate the school maintenance backlog so that every public school in the State provides the world-class facilities that our students and teachers deserve.

The Perfect Brew

It started as a pipe dream over ten years ago and now it’s a reality for owners Mark and Matthew as Penrith’s newest nanobrewery, Rusty Penny Brewing Co, opened its doors to the public in December last year.

Rusty Penny Brewing Co has tap space for twelve beers. With nitro coffee and cold drip coffee to be offered on tap, the brewery expects to have a variety of ten beers. Six of these will be staple beers that will always be available, whilst four will be experimental or seasonal beers that will only be on tap as long as the kegs last.

Local owner Mark explained how the idea for the nanobrewery, which makes 200 litres per batch, began several years ago. “The thought of opening a brewery started for us in 2007, when we started brewing all grain beer in a garage in Penrith. This hobby quickly became an obsession, and to help fund the hobby ‘Sydney Homebrew Supplies’ was born. This online homebrew store allowed us to buy more gear and build our first proper brewery still in a garage and we continued to work on recipe development” he said.

“In 2016, this all changed when we took a risk and opened a bricks and mortar homebrew store called ‘All Things Homebrew’ in Dean Place, Penrith. This business is still operating today and is at the same site with the nanobrewery still in our Dean Place factory. We hope to be able to provide a space for craft beer lovers to try something new and to get more people interested and educated in beer and brewing. We still supply a full range of homebrew equipment and manufacture our own fresh wort kits for brewers just starting out” continued Mark.

The dedicated brewers plan to continue to brew great beers for the locals and to grow into a larger venue.

“We like seeing others enjoy the beers we have made and sharing a love of beer with them” ended Mark.

Child Anxiety Is Increasing

Current estimates are that 10% of children suffer from anxiety. I think it is more, mainly because anxiety is frequently misunderstood by parents and teachers. Anxiety is often mislabelled as laziness, stubbornness, shyness, defiance, anger, etc, because it sometimes looks like those. It can also look like ADHD. I remember working with a family a few years ago. The child was extremely anxious. She would not go to the toilet or shower by herself in her own home. She would not do her homework.

The parent said she was lazy. I asked ‘lazy or terrified?’ and the parent stopped in her tracks, and quietly said ‘terrified’. If your child’s anxious behaviours are disruptive and dysfunctional and limiting his/her quality of life, please get it treated. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is regarded as the best treatment.

Anxiety is a HUGE topic, but here are some tips for you…

• Get it treated sooner rather than later. I prefer to see it treated by the age of 7 years. After that, the child starts to develop more fears and phobias and they pile up on top of each other. Untreated anxiety can lead to further and more severe mental health problems during adolescence and adulthood, and there is a greater risk of substance abuse.

• Teach your child calming down skills such as deep belly breathing, positive self-talk, calming thoughts, and counting backwards. Practice calming down skills daily and reinforce the use of calming down skills. Hint – a calming down skill is portable and soothing - it is not patting a puppy (can’t take a puppy to school), going for a walk (can’t go for a walk whenever you feel like it), or punching a pillow (keeps you in ‘fight’ mode).

• Pay attention to brave behaviours (rather than the anxious behaviours).

• If your child has to go somewhere such as a school excursion or camp, work out a plan with him or her for anticipated anxious moments and which calming skills s/he can use to get through those moments. Let the teachers know about the plan so they can walk your child through it if your child is in a panic. Do not rescue your child, remind him/her of the plan – anxiety is a negative feedback loop, the more you rescue the worse it will get.

• Role model calm. If you are anxious, your child will be anxious.

The Importance of Knowing CPR 2018/19 has been one of the worst summers on record, with 86 people drowned nationally from Dec 1 2018 – Feb 2, 2019, and 28 drownings in NSW alone. In many of these cases, the fast and effective application of CPR may have saved some of these lives - resuscitation and early intervention can mean the difference between life and death.

Statistics are one thing, but the effectiveness of CPR really hits home when you consider a real life example in January, when 1 year old girl life was saved by her father’s quick response, despite being blue in the face and lifeless when her dad scooped her out of the backyard pool at the family home in southern Sydney. The little girl had slipped from the side of the pool into the water with barely a sound or a splash while her father was distracted by one of his two other daughters as they all played together in the pool. After being alerted to his daughter’s plight by another of his children, the father grabbed his daughter out of the water and handed her to his brotherin-law.

Working together, the two men alternated between blowing breaths into the little girl’s mouth and compressing her chest.

After two-and-a-half minutes, she burst back to life, expelling approximately 1 litre of water. It was, in some respects, the ideal resuscitation — airways were already clear when paramedics arrived, meaning the girl did not have to be intubated, and by getting her breathing started within a few minutes the flow of oxygen was restored to her organs in time to avoid brain damage or other long-term health problems. Within 24 hours, this little girl was discharged from hospital, but it could have turned out very differently had CPR not been applied quickly.

Experts estimate the number of Australians with training in CPR is around five per cent — but a child who receives during an emergency it is four times more likely to survive. Learning CPR is a must for any parent who has a backyard pool.

Remember, CPR is just one of the important pillars of water safety. Early swimming lessons, supervision of children, fencing the pool and always shutting the gate are vital. How was School Today?

Positive Ways of Communicating with your Child Many parents or caregivers of school-aged children would be familiar with the age-old ritual of asking your child how their day was at school. Often, these questions are met with a simple one word reply or in some cases, no reply at all. Parents are left pondering what their child is actually learning and if they have any friends. Sound familiar?

Encouraging children to share information about their day at school is about asking the right questions at the right time. Before you can do this, you need to consider your child’s personality and communication style. Some children do not respond favourably to being bombarded with questions the minute they get in the car after school. Others might feel pressured to respond a particular way for fear of your reaction to what they say. Whilst some children might need questions phrased a particular way

to encourage them to open up. Identifying the communication style or needs of your child is the first step to authentic and open communication.

If you feel your child is becoming overwhelmed with being asked when they first see you, resist the urge to jump straight into questions but rather say hello, offer them an afternoon snack or drink and tell them a little about your day. Ease the questions in as part of a relaxed, non-confrontational conversation. Also, by modelling how you communicate about the day, it will demonstrate effective communication for your child.

It is difficult to keep your emotions in-check when your child is experiencing difficulties at school and most of us are probably guilty of having an overreaction to something our child has told us that has happened at school before. If this has been the case in the past, you will need to rebuild your trust with your child and show them a controlled and positive outlook to overcoming problems at school. This will take time but stick with it as it will open the doors to communication in the future.

When phrasing questions, try to word them in ways that elicit a response that requires more than one word. Instead of “How was your day?” try, “Tell me about the best part of your day”.

Instead of “Did you learn anything today?” try, “What are 3 things you learned today?”. If the answer is “nothing”, then you could ask which subjects they had and ask a specific question related to that subject. If the class teacher uses an app to communicate to parents, use that information as a discussion point to connect with your child. Remember, all these things take time to develop so the key is be positive and encouraging but not forceful.

Colcannon with Guinness Stew Ingredients 50g (1/3 cup) plain flour 1kg gravy beef, cut into 3cm pieces 60ml (1/4 cup) olive oil 3 carrots, peeled, coarsely chopped 1 brown onion, halved, coarsely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 tablespoons tomato paste 250ml (1 cup) Guinness beer 250ml (1 cup) beef stock 2 sprigs fresh thyme 2 dried bay leaves 1/4 cup coarsely chopped fresh continental parsley 2 teaspoons finely grated lemon rind Colcannon 1kg sebago potatoes, peeled, chopped 40g butter, chopped 1/4 (about 500g) savoy cabbage, hard core removed, coarsely chopped 4 green shallots, ends trimmed, thinly sliced 125ml (1/2 cup) milk Method 1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Place the flour in a bowl and season with salt and pepper. Add beef and turn to coat.

2. Heat half the oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add half the beef and cook for 2-5 minutes each side or until browned. Transfer to a 2.5L (10-cup) capacity ovenproof dish. Repeat with the remaining beef, reheating pan between batches.

3. Heat the remaining oil in the pan over medium-high heat.

Add the carrot, onion and garlic and cook for 5 minutes or until the onion is soft. Add the tomato paste and cook for 1 minute. Add the Guinness, stock, thyme and bay leaves and bring to the boil. Transfer to the ovenproof dish. Bake, covered, for 2 hours or until meat is tender. Season with salt and pepper.

4. Meanwhile, to make the colcannon, cook the potato in a saucepan of boiling water for 15 minutes or until tender.

Drain and return to pan. Use a potato masher to mash until smooth. Heat butter in a frying pan over medium heat until foaming. Add the cabbage and shallot and cook for 3-4 minutes or until tender (do not brown). Add the cabbage mixture and milk to the potato and stir to combine. Season with salt and pepper.

5. Divide the colcannon among serving plates. Top with the stew and sprinkle with parsley and lemon rind to serve.

Heart and Soul of Junior Rugby

Getting involved as a committee member at the grassroots level of sport takes dedication. It’s often many hours of unpaid work that takes a genuine love of sport and community spirit to make the role a success. For Jordan Springs’ Adam Fletcher, this year marks his sixth season as the President of the Penrith RSL Junior Rugby Union Club.

Fletcher is the founding President who established the club in 2014. Being the President includes everything from marking the fields, sourcing kits, attending many meetings and being the point of contact for a lot of organisation.

“The motivation initially when starting the club was simply to introduce more kids to rugby. I’ve been involved in a number of sports and I believe rugby is special for teaching so much

besides the actual sport. I love joining in training sessions, especially with our Minis and seeing the kids improve every year” Adam told the Jordan Springs Gazette.

Penrith RSL JRUC have had 10 or more teams for the last 3 years, playing the traditional Winter competition in the Sydney Junior Rugby competition and Western Sydney Minis, not including several teams in out of season Rugby 7’s competitions. Every year they aim to fill every age group from the Under 6’s through to the Under 16’s.

Adam has seen the growth in the community. Whilst the number of teams fielded has not changed much recently, the links between them has strengthened with many new friendships forged. “New people coming to our club always comment on how friendly everyone is and it’s been something that keeps perpetuating with new members taking great pride in welcoming others. The quality of coaching we have at the club is high, with a number of ex-senior representative coaches and players taking a keen interest in developing local talent” explained Adam.

So, what is Adam looking forward to the most about his sixth season at the helm?

“The last few years has been about preparing the club for the future financially and administratively. I believe we have a great reputation within rugby circles and its regularly fed back to me from our sponsors who receive a lot of compliments for their involvement and contribution to rugby outside of its traditional heartland. I look forward to welcoming more members, families, sponsors all keen to advance rugby in our city” he ended.

We are Relocating to Bigger Premises We will be relocating to bigger premises in the next few months.

We will be located on the same road as we are currently on, Wentworth Road, but just further down the road.

The new premises have been renovated to accommodate a veterinary hospital. The premises are huge! There are double brick walls, 3m high ceilings and a green bull nosed verandah around the front of the building. We will even have a concrete driveway and carpark! There will still be an off leash park in the front yard for you and your dogs to enjoy.

We can’t wait!!!!!

Camille purchased the veterinary hospital business nearly 9 years ago and there has been steady and continual growth of the business in this time.

We started off with 4 staff and have grown to 16 staff members. We have definitely outgrown the current premises!

We are unsure of the date of the relocation at this time, as there is still some work to be completed. We will let you know as soon as we know.

New Baby Boy for Rachel!!

On Sunday 10th February 2019, our veterinary nurse, Rachel gave birth to a beautiful baby boy.

Both mum and bub are doing well. We wish Rachel the best of luck through her journey of parenthood.

Theresa, one of our veterinarians, is due March 2019 with her second child.
