The Jordan Springs Gazette will now be distributed in Ropes Crossing. The popularity and demand for local community news continues to grow and so do we.

Fun Filled Day for the Family Calling on the residents of Jordan Springs, Llandilo and Ropes Crossing! Mark the 1st day of Spring in your diary as St Marys will be holding the St Marys Spring Festival. There will be three stages of entertainment, over 200 stalls, a grand parade and lots of free family fun.

The St Marys Spring Festival is the major annual community event held in the CBD of St Marys and attracts a crowd of approximately 20,000-30,000 people each year. The 2018 Festival will be held on Saturday 1st September from 9am to 3pm.

The Festival has run for over 40 years and this year’s Festival is sure to be just as fun and exciting.

If you are associated with a school group, dancing school or singing group then give St Marys Town Centre a call as they are looking for talented locals from Jordan Springs, Llandilo and Ropes Crossing who would be interested in performing on stage and sharing their talents with the local community.

Also, if you are part of a community group or sporting association, why not take part in the Grand Parade. If your team have matching uniforms you could form a walking group. If your vehicle is interesting or has signage, you could enter as a float.

The list of options is endless, and best of all, being part of the Grand Parade is free. The Grand Parade is one of the highlights of the St Marys Spring Festival, watched by thousands of people.

They are looking for marching bands, dancing groups, vintage vehicles, walking floats, school groups and more. So, if you have any contacts, please get in contact with St Marys Town Centre via Facebook and help make this local event a showcase of the best that our area has to offer.

‘The GeriActivists’ Filmed in Llandilo The Llandilo Maltese Cultural Association (MCA) has participated in a unique film project called The GeriActivists.

The Blue Mountains and Adelaide based creative team of ‘illuminart’, led by creative producer David Ryan, worked closely with the local community. They asked Llandilo Maltese seniors to imagine their community, 50 years in the future, challenging them to envision life in 2068.

Throughout the process the greater questions loomed, ‘How much do governments or developers consider the sociocultural impacts of the new suburbs they’re mapping? How can we compel them to consider the pre-existing cultural character of a place and respond to the needs of sustainable development?’

The idea was to engage the seniors in a brainstorming discourse where they were tasked with the sobering job of considering what will become of their ‘heirloom farms’ and what ‘challenges lie ahead for their children’s children’s, children’. A daunting task for anyone, but Ryan continued to remind them of their ‘strengths of legacy and heritage’.

The group was involved in the planning, writing and recording of a new song with the voices of the MCA choir singing acapella.

They then gathered together at the Psaila family farm and shot a Virtual Reality short film using advanced 360 film technology.

The GeriActivists project is funded by The Australia Council for the Arts and Create NSW. They hope to have it ready for viewing by Christmas this year, when the immersive artworks will be displayed at community events and libraries in Penrith and St Marys. The virtual reality performances will also be viewable on-line with a VR headset.

Ryan encourages other communities to get involved. From Nashville to Llandilo Country music entertainer Jonnie Russell has decided to try a new concept in entertainment, and that is to bring his popular All Star Show away from the major city clubs and instead present them in the outlying districts which are still only a short distance from the main cities and towns.

“We are kind of turning back the clock so to speak and taking our shows directly out to the people. Slim Dusty and Reg Lindsay did this very same thing in days gone by, so why not reintroduce it?” said Russell.

Russell has had a lifetime in the music industry and has appeared all over Australia as well as in Nashville Tennessee, where he appeared on the Carl Tipton TV Show and represented Australia on a program called international Showcase way back in 1986. Jon has also recorded in Nashville, his most popular song being ‘Make My Coffee Black’.

The Jonnie Russell All Star Show will be held at Llandilo Hall on Sunday July 22 commencing at 1pm.

Russell’s special guests on the day will be popular Irish singer Nick O’Neil and the fabulous Darcy Le Year from the Wolverines, one of the most popular acts on the Australian club circuit. The backing band will be the Palominos.

They are expecting a full house on the day, so those interested in coming along are urged to please be early to ensure a good seat. Doors open at 12:30pm and tickets are just $15 - all one price.

Tea, coffee, milo and refreshments will be available at half time.

What’s Cooking

Pork, Lemon and Ricotta Pasta Bake

Ingredients 350g dried rigatoni pasta 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 500g pork mince 1 brown onion, sliced 3 garlic cloves, crushed 2 small carrots, finely chopped 2 celery stalks, finely chopped 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh rosemary leaves 1/2 cup dry white wine 1/4 cup tomato paste 1 chicken stock cube 200g fresh ricotta 2 tablespoons lemon juice, plus wedges to serve 1/3 cup grated parmesan Fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves, to serve Preparation 1. Cook pasta following packet directions. Drain, reserving 1 cup cooking liquid.

2. Preheat oven to 200C/180C fan-forced.

3. Heat oil in a large deep ovenproof frying pan over medium-high heat. Add mince. Cook, breaking up mince with the back of a wooden spoon, for 6 minutes or until browned. Add onion, garlic, carrot, celery and rosemary.

Cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes or until onion has softened. Add wine. Cook for 2 minutes or until reduced by half. Add tomato paste and stock cube. Stir to combine.

4. Stir in pasta cooking liquid. Bring to a simmer. Add pasta, tossing to combine. Remove from heat. Season with salt and pepper.

5. Combine ricotta, lemon juice and half of the parmesan in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Dollop ricotta mixture over pasta mixture. Sprinkle with remaining parmesan.

Bake for 20 minutes or until ricotta is golden. Sprinkle pasta with parsley. Serve with lemon wedges. https://www.taste.com.au/recipes/pork-lemon-ricotta-pasta-bake

Jordan Springs Probus Club The Club has been formed to support the Probus values of supporting and promoting Friendship, Fellowship and Fun in retirement. We are actively seeking new members from Jordan Springs and surrounding suburbs with currently no waiting list for applications.

The members have expressed interest in establishing some special interest groups such as walking, movies, theatre, wine and food, travel and photography. Regular dining events will be planned with lunch and dinner at local eateries and restaurants.

The latest of these was a successful lunch at the Overlander Hotel with 18 members and potential members attending. The next lunch will be held at the Colonial Hotel, in Werrington, on Tuesday 10th July.

A number of events are being organised for the club including The Postman’s Run on the Hawkesbury, The Railway Museum at Thirlmere, Brisbane Waters Ferry and lunch. Some of these could be utilising a Gold Opal Card for public transport with others suited to carpooling or coach hire. A suitable coach hire solution has been pursued by the club.

Come and Play Local Cricket Cranebrook Cricket Club has competed in local competitions since the mid 1990’s and is the most established cricket club in North Penrith.

In the junior competitions, the club caters for boys and girls from ages 6+, whilst the senior teams cater for ages 16+.

Last season, the club fielded four junior teams and ten senior teams. The competition is played throughout the wider Penrith District; however, the club conducts regular training for their teams at Cranebrook Oval in Cranebrook.

Whilst three of their four junior sides played non-competitive games, three of their Under 11’s players were successful in making representative selection for Penrith.

In season 2017/18 they had two senior sides compete in Grand Finals; unfortunately, they were both beaten on the day by their opposition.

The senior competition is likely to be the one-day format.

There are some exciting proposals currently being discussed around the way junior cricket is going to be played in the future.

How exactly kids will play the game is still being decided, but the view is to introduce Cricket Australia’s new junior playing formats. These aim to increase fun, activity levels and skill development with the objectives being more fun, more action and with shortened times. This means most games for 6 to 10year olds are finished in under two hours.

They are looking forward to the upcoming 2018/19 season and are offering the communities of Jordan Springs, Llandilo and Ropes Crossing a well-established inclusive cricket club that offers all participants the opportunity to enjoy the game of cricket.

Fear and Love in Parenting There are two base emotions – fear and love. How do fear and love play out in your parenting?

Fear-based parenting views the child as “bad”. Love-based parenting views your child as worthy of your love, time, and attention.

Fear-based parenting views the child as “manipulative and attention seeking”. Love-based parenting recognises that all behaviour arises from a need (physical, emotional, intellectual), and sometimes behaviour is a way of attempting to make a connection with a parent.

Fear-based parenting emphasises the need for punishment.

Love-based parenting emphasises the need for guidance, education, and relationship.

Fear-based parenting seeks revenge or payback for a child’s behaviour. Love-based parenting seeks belonging and connection for the child.

Fear-based parenting notices “bad” behaviour. Love-based parenting notices mistaken behaviour.

When we move from fear-based parenting to love-based parenting we move from ME (parent’s agenda) to WE (parent and child together). It is no longer us versus them.

In fear-based parenting the parent reacts. In love-based parenting the parent responds.

In fear-based parenting the child’s feeling are dismissed. In love-based parenting the child’s feelings are acknowledged.

Fear-based parenting focuses on the person and love-based parenting focuses on the behaviour.

Through fear-based parenting, the child experiences shame, which can last a lifetime. Through love-based parenting, the child experiences guilt, which is short-term.

In fear-based parenting, the parent feels shame, blame, and guilt. In love-based parenting, the parent tries to be real.

In fear-based parenting, the parent burdens the child with his or her own feelings, demands an insincere apology, and does not apologise for his or her own mistaken behaviour. In lovebased parenting, the parent talks about OK/not OK for the self and child, seeks relationship repair, admits wrongdoing, and role models saying sorry.

Fear-based parenting values the child for what he or she does.

Love-based parenting values the child for who she or he is.

In fear-based parenting, the parent persuades, nags, begs, yells, and hits. In love-based parenting, the parent is comfortable with setting safe limits and boundaries for children.

In fear-based parenting, the parent is operating at a head level. In love-based parenting, the parent is operating from a heart level.

Local Jordan Springs residents and people from across the Penrith region took part in World Environment Day at the Jordan Springs Community Hub. The day celebrated the local environment and great sustainability efforts

A series of workshops were held with a focus on becoming more sustainable – from how to make your home water wise to creating healthier eating habits and reducing food waste.

Creative reuse centre, Reverse Garbage, hosted a recycled art session for the kids, the Creative Fringe ran a session on making plastic yarn from reused plastic bags to make mats for the homeless, and environmental organisation Greening Australia helped people pot up their own native plant to take home.

The community got up and close with native wildlife on the day, including a baby crocodile, lace monitor, eastern water dragon, blue tongue lizard, a python, and a possum.

Other stalls included Conservation Volunteers Australia talking about their work to preserve the local Cumberland Plain Woodland, National Parks and Wildlife Service talking about the Wianamatta Regional Park, which neighbours Jordan Springs, as well as Lendlease and the environment and waste teams from Council. Braddock Public School were on hand, not only keeping the barbeque going, but also selling some of the fresh produce from their school garden.

Star Gazing for Year 5 Students

Year five students from The Lakes Christian College enjoyed an educational evening at Western Sydney University Observatory recently. They viewed a fascinating presentation on the Earth and its place in our Solar System, richly enhancing their current Science topic.

It was a clear night allowing them to look through different size telescopes to see clusters of stars, Jupiter and Saturn. It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to gain firsthand experience with this technology and equipment and see how exciting it is to study science, especially astronomy at the university.

Dirty Solar Panels are Costing You Money After witnessing the proliferation of solar panel installations within the Nepean region, one savvy local now plans to clean up... by helping locals make more from their investment in solar.

As electricity costs continue to rise, more and more Nepean locals are turning to solar power installations in the hope that they can dramatically reduce their power bills. The latest Climate Council report reveals there are over 343,000 households in New South Wales now with solar installations, and with the cost of solar dropping by 58% over the past five years, installing solar to save on power costs is a trend that is predicted to have continued growth.

Local resident, Ken Bailey, has recently capitalised on the region’s solar boom by joining a nationwide solar panel cleaning network and establishing EcoKleenSolar Nepean.

“I was researching about solar panels for myself and discovered that they need a regular clean and inspection program to ensure they are working efficiently. That’s when I realised there was really no one offering this professional service to locals in the Nepean region”, Mr Bailey said.

Bosch, a world leader in solar technology, specify in their care and maintenance manual that panels that are soiled or dirty in places should be cleaned on a half-yearly basis.

“But you have to take care, though”, said Mr Bailey. “The average home owner should not get up on their roof to clean their panels. Working at heights is risky and we don’t want people hurting themselves.”

Mr Bailey said that he was required to undertake specific training to get accredited to work safely at heights and use all of the necessary safety equipment before he was able to commence his business.

“It’s also very important to follow the manufacturer’s recommended cleaning procedures or you may void your warranty.”

We asked Mr Bailey why panels need cleaning; surely rain was enough to clean them every so often?

“Imagine how your car would look if you left it out in the weather for six months. Well, that’s how your solar panels will look as well. Anything preventing sunlight getting into the cells within the solar panels means that they are not performing to their optimum output. That means the build up of dust, dirt, salt, even bird droppings and road pollutants creates a surface layer of grime that needs to be regularly cleaned.”

It seems as though the region’s locals are fast learners. Mr Bailey says that as word spreads about how he is helping locals make more from their solar he is seeing a lot more of the region from the rooftops.

Your Local Church

In 2009, Reverend Peter Wood and his young family built and moved into Ropes Crossing to start Ropes Crossing Church.

Two years later in 2011 Ropes Crossing Church opened. Now Ropes Crossing Church comprises of about 70 local people of all ages, stages, cultural and spiritual backgrounds, with people continuing to join as they grow. Their aim is to make a positive contribution to this amazing community of which we are a part.

On Sundays they meet at 10:30am at Ropes Crossing Public School, with crèche each week for under school age children and Kids Church each fortnight for Kindergarten-Year 2 and Years 3-6 children at the Hub. They run weekly Christian Scripture for students at Ropes Crossing Public School, ‘YaRC’ for Years 7-12 youth on Fridays from 7:00pm-9:00pm at the Hub and small groups for adults at various times and locations.

Fortnightly they run a Mobile Pantry on Tuesdays from 1:30pm2:30pm at the Hub, providing subsidized groceries to people with a health care, pension or immigration card.

Each year they run music evenings on the Village Green. In February it’s ‘Summer Sounds’, in November it’s ‘blu Ropes’ and in December it’s ‘Ropes Crossing Carols by Candlelight’. They also run ‘4 FAMILIES’ (school holiday program) for preschoolYear 6 children at the Hub on Tuesday-Friday from 2-5 October.

There are events for men or women. The next one is a ‘Ladies Jewellery Afternoon’ on Saturday 28 July from 2:00pm-5:00pm at the Hub where ladies can meet over afternoon tea, hear some of Margaret’s wedding story and make a set of earrings and a necklace for $30.

Dr Camille Brandt will be the official veterinarian on the day with her team from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. They will be offering free veterinary checks and answering your pet health questions.

There will be stalls, demonstrations, a talent quest and a Simon Says Competition.

This is a fundraiser for National Breast Cancer Foundation, so you will have to wear PINK on the day.

Church worship has been a constant throughout the last 2000 plus years. As in the past, so too today, there is a variation in acts of worship. These variations however have a common denominator, to pray and praise and more importantly to do what Jesus the Christ expects of us: the ‘breaking of bread’. In this, the life, execution, Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus is recalled and this remains the spiritual sustenance for the worshipper.

Surround ‘the breaking of bread’ with whatever variety of worship, there still remains four basic requirements. First is preparation: to discipline the self to be still and wind down from everyday thought. Simply to wait on God. Second is to practice recognition: we are who we are and in being honest with ourselves we recognize our strength and weakness. The third

is trust: it is through the Holy Trinity that we have the freedom to ‘be’, not in conformity to self but in conformity to living that enhances and to appreciating the wonderful universe in which we live.

The fourth is giving: Jesus the Christ, before his execution did not preach a sermon- he invited his followers to a meal, the sacred ‘breaking of bread’ that has been a constant in Christian worship.

It is when we participate in the meal and honestly reflect, the end result is that we are motivated not by self but that in all things [thoughts / actions] we do it ‘in Christ’. Life is short for few reach to be over 100 years in age. Life in itself is a learning process which cannot ignore the spiritual dimension and that is why the sacred meal will always remain a constant.

As July sets in, so does the snow over the mountain and it sure does send chills right through you!

I must admit, Winter is my favourite season. You can’t beat a homemade soup, by the fire wearing your fluffy socks, cosy and warm.

When I was much younger, I recall being responsible for bringing the chopped wood into the house from the shed. I would often grizzle about this task, I also remember all the splinters and heavy work in doing so.

Somehow, those memories don’t dull my love for Winter, in fact they bring a smile to my face of treasured memories of days gone by.
