New Walking Group for Jordan Springs A new local health and fitness community group has been started, with resident Jenny Fahey forming the Jordan Springs Walking Group recently.

“I formed the group so that people in the Jordan Springs area could join me and walk together, whilst making new friends. It’s much safer walking as a group than doing this by yourself. You can get to know the people in your community, explore the local area along the way and stay healthy” Group Organiser Jenny said to the Jordan Springs Gazette.

The group, which has over 30 members on Facebook since launching a month ago, plans to meet on the stairs at the Information Centre at Jordan Springs, on Monday and Wednesday nights at 6:00pm and on Saturday mornings at 8:00am to start with.

“I love walking and it’s a great way to stay fit. It also helps you to de-stress after a hard day at work. My future plans for the group are to meet some great people and to have it grow in numbers. Come on wonderful community, let’s get walking today! The best part of it is that it’s free” added Jenny.

Our Community Vet on the Grow This month brings some exciting news to the local community, with Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital relocating to bigger premises.

The much-loved vet has moved from 377 Wentworth Road to 49 Wentworth Road in Orchard Hills and are now just further down the road.

The new premises have been renovated to accommodate a veterinary hospital. The premises are huge! There are double brick walls, 3m high ceilings and a green, bull-nosed verandah around the front of the building. They even have a concrete driveway and carpark. There is an off-leash park in the front yard for you and your dogs to enjoy.

Local customer Jenny from Jordan Springs said, “Freddy has been going to Orchard Hills Veterinary Clinic for just under 10 years.

I have seen it grow from just Camille to what it is today. I am very happy for her and all her team to be going to a facility fit for the fantastic service they offer and how great they are with all the animals in their care. We cannot wait to see the new place!”.

Camille purchased the veterinary hospital business nearly 9 years ago and there has been steady and continual growth of the business in this time. They started off with 4 staff and have now grown to 16 staff members and have definitely outgrown their previous premises. This is a wonderful achievement for a successful, local small business.

Local Competes for Miss of Australia Crown 14-year-old Ropes Crossing student Chloe Zrebiec has been named a National Finalist for NSW in the Junior Division of the 2019 Miss of Australia beauty pageant, which will be held from the 1st-3rd October in Melbourne this year.

This is Chloe’s first ever beauty pageant and she is also a National Champion in her division for pom, and dances with a local club.

“The opportunity came up through Chloe’s StarNow profile to enter Miss of Australia and she decided to have a go.

She thought she would apply just to help with her confidence, meet people and build up new skills. We got an email saying Chloe had been selected to be a National Finalist on Christmas day last year, which really made our day” said Keri Murphy-Douglas, Chloe’s mother.

Being a National Finalist in Miss of Australia involves participants to undertake various challenges. Chloe recently took part in a video challenge, which posed the question ‘What empowers you in life?’. Her video received 229 votes by the close of competition. The next challenge, Miss Popularity, involves the general public to vote at a cost of $1 per vote, though you can vote as many times as you like. She has had to come up with a national costume that represents her perception of Australia and has had to get an evening wear dress and an athletic costume, as these are the three categories she will be doing on the catwalk.

To assist with the cost of her competing in the Miss of Australia beauty pageant, Chloe’s mother Keri has set up a GoFundMe fundraising page. So far, the local campaign has raised $705 of the $2,500 target. “We are just a regular working family trying to make ends meet as well as making sure Chloe gets every opportunity, we can give her in life. We didn’t want to say no to her doing the beauty pageant, as it is definitely a great way to build her confidence up” explained Keri.

“Watching Chloe do the challenges that have been requested so far has been amazing. She is a bright young lady and we feel very blessed with how far she has come out of her shell. Chloe was quite shy before the pageant challenges started and I was a little unsure of how she would go. She is very strict with her schoolwork and is determined to keep it up and strive to get dux again this year. This pageant is one that really encourages all the girls and the girls are all very supportive of each other” Keri ended.

Pumpkin Soup with a Twist

Ingredients 3/4 medium sized butternut pumpkin, skin and seeds removed, chopped 2 medium potatoes, chopped 1 onion, chopped 1-1 1/2 teaspoons mild curry powder salt and cracked black pepper 2 1/2 cups Massel vegetable liquid stock 1 cup full cream chilli powder to taste, if desired Method 1. Place pumpkin, potatoes, onion, curry powder and stock in a large slow cooker. Season with salt and pepper. Cook for several hours until vegetables are tender.

2. Turn off the heat and allow to cool. Using a food processor or stick blender, process until smooth.

3. Stir through the cream and chilli powder (if desired). Warm the soup through again, season to taste and serve.

Quick Pastry Dessert with Berries and Custard Ingredients 2 (25 x 25cm) puff pastry sheets 1 egg, beaten 110g (1/2 cup) caster sugar 300g mixed berries, fresh or frozen Warm custard, to serve Icing sugar, to dust Method 1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Cut each pastry sheet into four triangles, brush with egg and place on a greased baking tray. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden.

2. Meanwhile, place sugar and 60ml (1/4 cup) water in a pan over medium heat and stir to dissolve sugar. Increase the heat to high and boil for 1-2 minutes. Add the berries and cook for a further 5 minutes. Allow to cool slightly.

3. To serve, place one pastry triangle on each plate, then top with some warm custard and a spoonful of berries. Finish with a second pastry triangle and a dusting of icing sugar.

Online Pet Registration Services get Tails Wagging in Penrith Over 1,500 dog and cat owners in the across Penrith and the Blue Mountains have taken advantage of new and improved online systems to register their pets from the comfort of their own homes.

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith said the local pet owners are among 12,813 cat and dog owners across NSW who have used the NSW Pet Registry to register their pets since a new and improved website launched in October.

An additional 1556 owners have paid pet registration fees via Service NSW since it was added as a convenient new method in November – 97 per cent of these online.

Stuart Ayres urged people to use the convenient online channels to register their pet.

“These new and improved online services are another example of how the NSW Government is making the customer experience the central focus in our delivery of services,” Stuart Ayres said.

“I’m pleased to see the new online services have proven so popular within our local community.

“Pet registration fees go straight back into our local community, funding animal shelters, ranger services, dog recreation areas and education and awareness activities in the Penrith and Blue Mountains Council areas.”

Minister for Local Government Shelley Hancock said it was encouraging to see so many people using the new and improved registration methods and encouraged pet owners to explore the improved NSW Pet Registry website.

“Creating a NSW Pet Registry profile is the easiest way for you to be contacted if your missing pet is found,” Mrs Hancock said.

Minister for Customer Service Victor Dominello encouraged pet owners to utilise digital kiosks at the 99 Service NSW Centres across the State or online using a MyServiceNSW Account.

“People can use their MyServiceNSW Account from any computer or mobile device or visit their nearest Service NSW Centre with their cat or dog’s microchip number to pay their pet registration fee,” Mr Dominello said.

“We are making life easier for citizens by linking more and more transactions to the MyServiceNSW Account. The pet registry is a great example of how we are helping people to save time and money by delivering more digital service options.”

The recently added features of the NSW Pet Registry include: • Upload a photo of your pet - Pet owners and breeders can upload a photo of their pet on the Pet Profile page to help identify and return the animal should it get lost.

• Lost and found - If the microchip number of a lost cat or dog is known, a member of the public can use the Registry to send a secure message to the pet owner with their contact details alerting them that they have found their pet.

• Search function - Prospective pet owners can use the Registry to find out important information before buying a cat or dog. Using a microchip number, they can access the animal’s breed, age, gender and whether or not it is de-sexed.

• Create/add a litter - Breeders can create a litter and add offspring to their online pet profile, making it easier for vets to update animal records.

Our Local Elvis It’s been 20 years since he got behind the microphone in his first Elvis Presley contest, paying homage to the King. Now, it’s a reality for Jordan Springs’ Steve Head, who is amongst one of Australia’s leading Elvis tribute artists.

Like many, Steve got started from karaoke nights.

During his first Elvis contest in 1999, he finished 3rd against more experienced contestants and that was the catalyst for what was to come. He has won almost every Elvis contest he has entered, including the 2010 Parkes Elvis Festival. Starting his tribute shows in 2005, Steve has since done hundreds of performances that have taken him to many places in Australia.

“I love everything about Elvis. It was a rags to riches story and he was human. He stumbled at times, but never forgot those who held his hand along the way, especially his family and fans” explained Steve.

“I was inspired by fellow Australian Elvis tribute artists I followed – David Cazalet and Dean Rias. I saw the joy their shows gave people and we are still friends. I also attended the 25th Anniversary of “Elvis Week” in 2002 in Memphis. That was the most amazing experience and a whole other story” he added.

Since beginning life as an Elvis tribute artist, Steve considers meeting his wife Adelina and having his daughter Michelina as a highlight. As an entertainer, it has given him opportunities to meet people who have worked with Elvis, Priscilla and Lisa Marie as well as working with artists like Damien Leith and Patrizio Buanne.

So, what is Steve’s favourite Elvis song? “I just can’t pin an all-time favourite song to perform. There are so many that mean so much in their story. I would say ‘My Way’ would be close to the one that says it, not just about his but my life story as well”.

“People still love Elvis and his music because he was the greatest entertainer of all time. His music fuses generations and no one sold a song the way Elvis did. Women just think he was the sexiest man on the planet too” he finished.

Parenting is all about knowing when to let the rope out and when to reel it in.

I take this metaphor a little bit further. The rope around your waist is the relationship you have with your child.

No rope = no relationship. Without a relationship there is no letting out and no reeling in. Your child is flailing about at the end of the rope without being hitched to something. That’s a dangerous and scary place for a child to be. In my experience most of these kids look angry. This anger masks hurt, all children want to feel connection and belonging with their primary caregivers.

Without a strong and positive parent-child relationship, your child will not listen to you and will not do as you ask. It really is that simple. I believe that having a strong relationship with your child is the most important thing that you can do as a parent.

I reckon that building relationship is about 80% of the parenting effort. So, if you are disciplining and punishing your children about 80% of the time, then think about taking an about-turn, and concentrate on relationship instead, and see how that changes things.

So, how do you develop a positive relationship with your child?

Hugs, touch, care, unconditional love, attention, spending time with them, descriptive praise, nurture, listening to them when they talk, are relationship builders. Things like putdowns, name calling, criticism, teasing, telling them that they are ‘bad’ or ‘naughty’, and swearing at your kids are relationship downers.

The best-kept secret to parenting is to spend small amounts of time (a few minutes) regularly throughout the day with your child, especially if she asks for it. Spending small amounts of time listening to your child or supporting him is worth more to your child than spending a half day per week. If you are not doing anything super-important, stop to listen to them or look at what they want to show you. Top up their emotional cup as often as you can.

If you are reading this, and you think that your relationship is not that great with your kids, and they are angry at you, not listening to you, and not doing as you ask, then it is not too late.

It’s never too late to build a relationship with your child.

Why Does my Child Hate the School Holidays?

Most people have heard of parents disliking the school holidays, but it isn’t as common to hear of children hating them too. It may seem to be a weird concept for some, but there are children who dislike the school holidays and even possess some anxiety about spending the time away from school.

Parents and caregivers are often left to calm stressed out children and come up with ways to manage the anxiety whilst providing practical activities and solutions to holiday care. It is important to acknowledge that these feelings are very real and need to be handled in a delicate manner. Just because it is not a common response to school holidays, it does not mean it is not valid. This response is particularly prevalent in children with additional needs, although it has the potential to affect any child.

First and foremost, parents and caregivers need to understand why the child hates the holidays. This could be for a variety of reasons. They may be uncertain or anxious about holiday care arrangements, concerned about boredom due to the lack of stimulation or peer interaction in the home environment, genuinely feel lost due to the lack of structure that the school day provides, or have another reason which is personal to their own circumstance. Once the reason for the feeling is established, solutions and support can be put in place to ease or eliminate concerns.

Alternative arrangements could be made in a different environment or perhaps a few sessions with a qualified professional, like a psychologist, may need to be employed. The reasoning behind the feelings will guide the best course of action to take. Remember, throughout this process your child needs to feel loved, supported and acknowledged so that they are willing to openly partake in suggestions made to practically address concerns in a way that suits your family’s needs.

Church worship has been a constant throughout the last 2000 years plus. As in the past, so today there is variation in acts of worship. These variations however have a common denominator- to pray and praise and more importantly to continue to do what Jesus, the Christ expects of us: the ‘breaking of bread’. In this the life, work, execution, Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus is recalled and this remains the spiritual sustenance of the worshipper.

Surround the ‘breaking of bread’ with whatever variety of worship and there still remains four basic requirements. First is preparation: to discipline oneself to be still and wind down from everyday thought. Simply, to wait on God. Second is to practice recognition: we are who we are and in being honest with ourselves we recognise our strengths and weaknesses.

The third is trust: it is through the Holy Trinity that we have the freedom to ‘be’, not in conformity to self but in conformity to living that enhances and to appreciate the wonderful universe in which we live.

The fourth is giving: Jesus the Christ, before his execution did not preach a sermon. He invited his followers to a mealthe sacred ‘breaking of bread’ that has been the constant in Christian worship. It is when we participate in the meal and honestly reflect, the end result is that we are not motivated by ourselves but that in all things (thoughts and actions) we do it “In Christ”.

Now life is short, for few reach to be over 100 years in age.

Life itself is a learning process which cannot ignore the spiritual dimension and that is why the sacred meal will always remain a constant. The meal is more than bread: it is the reality that God in Christ through the Holy Spirit feeds us knowing that we live in Christ.

Jordan Springs Probus Club

The club was formed under the Probus values of supporting and promoting Friendship, Fellowship and Fun in retirement. We are actively seeking new members from Jordan Springs and surrounding suburbs with currently no waiting list for applications.

The members have expressed interest in establishing some special interest groups such as walking, movie, theatre, wine and food, travel and photography. Regular dining events will be planned with lunch and dinner at local eateries and restaurants. The latest of these was a successful lunch at the Overlander Hotel, with 18 members and potential members attending. The next lunch will be held at the Colonial Hotel, in Werrington, on Wednesday 10th July.

A number of events are being organised for the club including The Postman’s Run on the Hawkesbury, The Railway Museum at Thirlmere and the Brisbane Waters ferry and lunch. Some of these could be utilising a Gold Opal Card for public transport, with others suited to carpooling or coach hire. A suitable coach hire solution has been pursued by the club.

Members can look forward to an exciting program featuring the above events, interesting guest speakers, monthly meetings, the opportunity to travel locally or around the world and enjoying exclusive discounts through the Probus Member Benefits Scheme including access to exclusive Probus Travel Insurance plans, developing new interests and staying active.

The Jordan Springs Probus Club meets at the Jordan Springs Community Hub on the 4th Tuesday of every month, from 9:30am for a 10:00am start.

House Captains Meet Kurtley Beale Local students Tane and Jess, the House Captains at Ropes Crossing Public School for the inaugural Beale Sport House, were recently invited to attend the new Bankwest Stadium at Parramatta to meet the namesake of their house – Australian Wallaby star Kurtley Beale.

They were accompanied by fellow students Rahfia and Ashmit.

Beale was chosen for being an indigenous role model to aspiring young people and for advocating the group HeadSpace.

Whilst at Bankwest Stadium, the Beale House Captains were asked some questions about sport and what it’s like to be a leader and a House Captain. Kurtley Beale unveiled the NSW Waratahs indigenous jersey for 2019, as the following weekend was the indigenous round for both rugby union and rugby league.

Kurtley Beale presented the House Captains with a signed indigenous Australian Wallabies jersey, as well as a jersey signed by all the 2019 Wallabies team.

This was a momentous day for the students and for Ropes Crossing Public School and one that will not be forgotten.

I recently enjoyed some time to travel, not to exotic destinations overseas or in luxurious beach stays in parts of our world that are warmer than home; but instead lovely little hidden gem communities, much like ours.
