Music in her Veins Jordan Springs musician Lynsey Mackay has begun the year in grand style, thanks to the local resident being selected to sing at the Tamworth Country Music Festival last month as well as plans to release her first EP and complete her studies in classical singing.

The hardworking mother first began vocal and piano lessons from the age of 6 and studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, Scotland. Lynsey splits her time between being a solo artist, singer in several bands, teaching vocals, piano and musical theory and producing local events with her company Gold Promotions.

“I have been lucky to travel the world as a performer and experience many events, special occasions and festivals. I had a number of years out of the industry while my daughter was younger and am just so happy to be working back full time in the industry now” Lynsey told the Jordan Springs Gazette.

Phone Council before you Fill!

Thinking of levelling your land or filling in areas of your property? Phone Council before you fill!

Penrith Mayor, Ross Fowler OAM said that using landfill to raise or level your property could be illegal, so check with Council first.

Illegal landfilling is filling without the necessary planning or licensing approvals. This commonly happens when construction and demolition waste is used as illegal fill for landscaping, land modification, reclamation works, roads and noise mounds.

“Illegal fill can contain contaminants like lead, asbestos or chemicals, which can harm human health and the environment. Illegal landfilling could permanently devalue your land, and you could end up facing hefty fines and clean-up costs,” Cr Fowler said.

“It’s also illegal to use fill to divert the natural overland flow of water, which could negatively impact or damage neighbouring properties.

“If you’re looking at doing some filling or earthworks, make sure you check with Council first. Property owners are responsible for making sure they don’t illegally bring fill onto their land, including putting it where it could harm plants, wildlife or waterways or cause flooding.

“Accepting illegal fill could lead to the property owner being prosecuted up to $5 million. They can also be charged expensive fees to remove the landfill from the site where it’s been buried,” he continued.

“Suppliers also need to obtain official certification to ensure that the fill is free of chemicals and harmful materials. Toxic fill can poison land and vegetation, with the potential for soil erosion, property devaluation and pollution of our City’s waterways.

“Property owners need to be wary of suppliers seeking out places to dispose of fill material as a means of evading the cost of taking fill to a registered waste facility.

“The message is clear: phone before you fill, and don’t risk your property, family health or money.”

To avoid penalties for unauthorised fill, residents are advised to check with Council on 4732 7777 before using land fill on their property.

It’s a new year, with thousands of children right across the country lacing up their shoes, putting on their backpacks, showing their best smiles and walking through the gates together with their families to start their first day of kindergarten.

It’s a day of nervous anticipation filled with tears and laughter.

For the Williamson family, Mason will start kindergarten at Llandilo Public School, joining his big brother Blake who begins year two.

“I’m looking forward to Mason making lots of new friends in kindergarten this year. He’ll also be joining some friends from day care, soccer and his brother. This should help his transition into big school. We can’t wait to hear all about his new adventures each day” said Kiera Williamson, Mason’s Mum. Mason couldn’t hold back his excitement when asked what he looks forward to the most about starting kindy. “Taking my own lunch box to school every day, being at school with my big brother and playing in the playground” he beamed.

As a parent of three boys, Kiera knows that when Mason walks through the school gates for the first time, emotionally it doesn’t always get easier the second time around, “On his first day of school, I’ll be excited for him as I know how excited he is to start and all the great things he will experience. Of course, I’ll also be a little sad too because my little boy is growing up. Once they start school, time goes so fast”.

Mason has already set his sights on his career once he finishes school too. “I want to be a police officer” he said.

For now, it’s all about making sure that it’s not just the kids ready for the big day, but parents as well.

“If you have a child starting kindergarten this year, try and be prepared with things like lunch and uniforms being sorted the night before, so it makes for a less stressful morning. If possible, keep your emotions in check as your child will usually follow your lead. Be excited and save the tears for on the way home.

Don’t forget to ask them about how their first day went as well” was Kiera’s advice.

Oysters With Avocado and Mango Salsa

Ingredients 1 small just-ripe mango, peeled, finely chopped 1 small ripe avocado, stoned, peeled, finely chopped 1/2 red onion, finely chopped 2 tablespoons lime juice 2 tablespoons coarsely chopped coriander 24 (2 dozen) natural oysters Method 1. Combine the mango, avocado, red onion, lime juice and coriander in a medium bowl.

2. Arrange oysters on a large platter of salt or ice. Spoon mango mixture evenly among oysters. Serve immediately.

Refrigerate for 2 hours to chill.

Chocolate Avocado Mousse

$10 Food Parcels for Those in Need Ropes Crossing Church and Anglicare formed a partnership two years ago. Their aim is to help in the Ropes Crossing and surrounding community by providing savings on essential groceries via a mobile grocery van (Mobile Pantry). It has been a real benefit to those who have visited.

The Mobile Pantry arrives every fortnight on a Tuesday afternoon between 1:30pm and 2:30pm in the Ropes Crossing Hub. The first Tuesday is February 5th. It is not just for ‘poor people’. If you need help; then they can help you. Please come and check it out.

When you arrive, you are given a number (the order you will be served). If it is your first visit, you register and get a card to use there or at other Mobile Pantries around Sydney and shopping bag(s). You are invited to help yourself to free afternoon tea while you wait for your turn. When your number is called, a contribution of $10 is made to fill a large shopping bag (or $20 for two bags). You go around the van selecting one or two of each type of product until your bag is full.

Typically, groceries on offer include cereal, long life milk, pasta, rice, biscuits, snacks and packet mixes. Usually a bag is worth $50 to $60, which is a great saving. Sometimes there are also free fruit and vegetables.

At the end of the year, those who are registered are invited to a Christmas Party. It is a great afternoon tea and the first forty families are given a free Christmas hamper to help them celebrate.

GAME REVIEW

Ingredients 100g dark chocolate, melted 2 ripe avocados, peeled, stoned, coarsely chopped 1/3 cup (25g) cocoa powder 2 tablespoons coconut sugar 1/4 cup (60ml) maple syrup 2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste Pinch of sea salt flakes Crumbled Cadbury Flake chocolate bar, to serve Fresh raspberries, to serve Method 1. Place the chocolate, avocado, cocoa powder, coconut sugar, maple syrup, vanilla bean paste and salt in a blender or food processor. Blend or process until smooth and creamy.

2. Spoon the mousse mixture into 1/2-cup (125ml) capacity glasses. Place in the fridge for 2 hours to chill.

3. Serve sprinkled with crumbled chocolate and raspberries.

Arms

Arms is a boxing game. There are 15 characters and each of them are unlike one another. There are a lot of mods in the game and the modes you can play are grand prix, versus and party match.

In grand prix mode, you can choose your character (between 1-15) and your combination of arms, then you’re ready to fight. You battle 10 other fighters in a row and if you win all 10 matches, you become the champion.

In versus mode, this is the perfect mode to play in if a friend wants to play with you. This is my favourite mode. Basically, there are different places to battle. Instead of playing against the computer, you play against your friends.

Party match mode is where you and a few other people battle off like a tournament and the most points win.

There are also 42 different arms that you can get to put on your person. Some of them bounce, spin, protect and explode. You can earn coins to buy new arms as you go.

I recommend this game to anyone over the age of 8 years. I rate it 8 out of 10 (only available on Nintendo Switch) and THANKS Grandma, it's a top p game! g

A Local Love Story Mark and Jo’s children Rilan and Harla both attend Little Zak’s Academy in Jordan Springs. The family will look to enrol the children in Jordan Springs Public School, once it is completed.

The Graham’s have watched the local community grow and change in the years since they first made the area home.

“The biggest change we have seen was the complete build of the shopping centre. The growth of the area is another major change.

Because we have been here since Stage 1, we have seen the complete transformation of the whole area. We would walk in Stage 2 with the dog off the leash on the roads with little disruptions.

We’ve had neighbours come and go to build again in different areas of Jordan Springs” Jo said.

What does the Graham family enjoy the most about living in the local area? “The community feel is what we find the most attractive thing about Jordan Springs. Lend Lease have built a great foundation and the promotions they have created. Neighbours also look after each other” ended Jo. Jordan Springs has its very own love story, which began right here in 2011, when Mark Graham proposed to his wife Jo in their new home during construction whilst having a romantic candle-lit dinner in their dining room.

Fast forward to 2019 and the local family now have two beautiful children, Rilan who is 4 and Harla who is 2. They still live in the same house that they built that Mark proposed to Jo in and were amongst the first people to live in Jordan Springs. The couple also hold the distinction of being on the cover of the first edition of the Jordan Springs Gazette in July 2013.

“If It’s Predictable, It’s Preventable” I don’t know who came up with this phrase, but it’s so true.

If everyday (or fairly frequently), you have a kid that does the same thing over and over again. Whether it’s getting angry, teasing her brother, forgetting to hang the towel up after a bath, etc. That’s not a ‘problem’. That’s an opportunity.

An opportunity to teach a new skill.

What is the child’s skill deficit?

And how can you teach him or her to learn a new skill?

Now, when I ask parents these questions, the first thing they try to come up with is a consequence for the behaviour. How can I punish the child for that behaviour?

But teaching opportunities, are not about making a child feel bad, withdrawing privileges, and creating stress. It’s about the parent-child relationship, connection, believing in the innate goodness and capacity of your child, focusing on the positives, communication, coming up with creative solutions, and collaboration. And at the same time role modelling those same skills. For example, if you want your child to learn to manage his temper, you have to role model being able to calm down when you have strong feelings.

To teach any skill well, you have to move from reactive’ to proactive’. The negative cycle of conflict is unhelpful, it clearly isn’t working because it is still a problem.

• How can you change the interactions, so that things are calmer and you can focus more on the positive?

• How can you reframe your view of the child from ‘naughty’ or ‘bad’ to ‘s/he just doesn’t have the skills s/he needs at the moment’?

• What strategies will you use to guide, nurture, support, and encourage your child to learn new skills?

Make a plan. Talk to the child about it. Get some agreement.

Consider his/her views and ideas. Put the plan into action. Be consistent!

Monitor your progress every day, and review your plan after a week. Is the behaviour getting smaller or bigger? What’s working? What’s not working? Tweak the plan and keep going.

And remember, that it is not simply enough to teach a child a skill once and assume that s/he can do it. You have to be kindly persistent. You are the adult, and you are supposed to be stronger, wiser, and kind.

Aussies are still drowning As we head towards the end of summer, we need to ask ourselves why this year was so horrific in terms of drownings? 5 people drowned in less than 24 hours on New Year’s Day across Australia and as at the first week of January, following a spate of very hot weather, drownings were up by 40% on the same time last year. 51 people having drowned in the first 37 days of summer, across a range of demographics – Aussie children, teens, adults and tourists.

We may be a little past January 1st, but please make it your resolution this year to be safer around the water. Swim between the flags, respect the ocean, and never overestimate your abilities at the beach.

Supervise always around water. 965 children aged 0-4 years drowned in Australia between 1 July 1993 and 30 June 2018.

A lapse in adult supervision was the major risk factor in 100% of toddler drowning deaths - don’t let your child become a statistic.

Fence the pool & shut the gate. Accidental falls into water remain the leading activity prior to drowning among children under five, resulting in 78% of all drowning deaths in this age group last year.

Learn To Swim. Every water safety education program has a common message – teach your kids to swim from six months of age. Quite simply, swimming is a skill that may just save their life, and should be given priority as such. Make sure the swim centre has fully qualified instructors. Are you an adult who can’t swim? Stop missing out on all the fun and make 2019 your year to learn, it’s never too late, and we run both adult group and private lessons!

Watch your mate – don’t let your mates drink and drown.

121 men between the ages of 25-34 lost their lives on our waterways from 2005 – 2015. That’s the equivalent of a local cricket team each year for the past ten years, and nearly 40 per cent of the drownings involved alcohol and over 20 per cent involved drugs. Wear a lifejacket when on the river, or out on the ocean, and never swim alone.

Learn CPR. Would you know what to do in an emergency? If the answer is no, make it your resolution to learn CPR in 2019.

We are Relocating to Bigger Premises We will be relocating to bigger premises in the next few months.

We will be located on the same road as we are currently on, Wentworth Road, but just further down the road.

The new premises have been renovated to accommodate a veterinary hospital. The premises are huge! There are double brick walls, 3m high ceilings and a green bull nosed verandah around the front of the building. We will even have a concrete driveway and carpark! There will still be an off leash park in the front yard for you and your dogs to enjoy.

We can’t wait!!!!!

Camille purchased the veterinary hospital business nearly 9 years ago and there has been steady and continual growth of the business in this time.

We started off with 4 staff and have grown to 16 staff members.

We have definitely outgrown the current premises!

We are unsure of the date of the relocation at this time, as there is still some work to be completed. We will let you know as soon as we know.

We are so excited, we cannot wait for you to visit our large country practice!

New Veterinarian Maya joined the Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital team in

January 2019.

Maya recently graduated from the University of Sydney with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. Growing up in both New York and Israel, Maya knew she wanted to be a vet from age 4, according to her parents. While still new to her career, Maya has a keen interest in internal medicine, wildlife and exotics, and has previously completed a research Masters on the reproductive physiology of the Tammar wallaby. Maya lives with two dogs, four cats, two cockatiels and her husband. Maya enjoys hiking, camping and putt putt golf on her days off.

Maternity Leave for 2 Staff Rachel, one of our veterinary nurses, is due February 2019 with her first child.

Theresa, one of our veterinarians, is due March 2019 with her second child.

We wish them best of luck through this special journey.

2019 is well underway.

In religion the Jew appeals to the Torah. The Buddhist and Hindu to the Veda and Vedanta, the Muslim to the Koran, the Atheist to philosophical structure while the Christian appeals to the Christ as recorded in the New Testament. To anyone this vast arena of appeal no one can claim to have total mastery! Yet the religious dimension and influence in life is one that cannot be ignored.

In no matter what religious environment, the factors of intolerance and ignorance can be used to hurt, particularly when utilized in the field of politics. Individually, religious sentiment is regulated to the environment into which the person is born and grows. Conversion as such is a fairly rare occurrence across religions except in circumstances where political agendas play a part. History gives many examples of this.

Essentially the history of religions centres on the perennial search to give some understanding to existence. Even the Atheist in defending atheism, is in fact searching for an answer that does not include the concept of theism, in order to gain understanding for existence. It can be argued that most individuals rarely give time to consider the question. But in the long run it cannot be easily ignored! In the long evolution of the universe and of humans when taking the vast array of scriptural appeal from various religious systems [including atheism!] one important factor found in appeal needs to be considered: along the axis of evolution, Jesus who is called the Christ, offers the ability to unify the individual and society in a personal relationship allowing to gain an insight into the true meaning for existence.

Worship evolved through Christian living is the means by which the impetus and ability is given. May 2019 be positive for you.

Carruthers Superb at Harvey Norman Week of Golf Thirteen-year old Leonay GC Junior Pennants representative and Jordan Springs resident Coby Carruthers has finished runner-up in his age group in the Jack Newton Junior Golf Foundation-sanctioned ‘Harvey Norman Week of Golf’.

Played over 5th-7th January at five prestigious courses in the Sydney Metropolitan Area (North Ryde, Pennant Hills, Avondale, Cumberland and Muirfield), the tournament attracted one hundred of the State’s top juniors.

Carruthers finished in a tie for first in the 13 Years age group with Castle Hill junior Ryan Fletcher, then lost to Fletcher in a six-hole playoff to finish as runner-up.

Carruthers shot rounds of 75, 79, 78, 84 and 77 over the five days, whilst Fletcher shot 82, 75, 81, 75 and 80 – both players finishing on 393.

Carruthers was obviously disappointed not to claim the Age Group title but said “I went down (against Fletcher) but I learnt a valuable lesson and that is to stick in there and fight and anything is possible�. “Thanks to my Mum and Dad who took me (to the tournament games) and guided me through all the way�.

Carruthers finished in 16th position overall.

Penrith GC was represented by Blake Murray (tied for 15th) and Michael Organ (9th) in the 16+ Age group, along with Brent Gadd (12th) in the 10 Years group.

Breaking News In other golf news, three local juniors have been selected to the 2019 Western Sydney Academy of Sport Golf Program. The three players are Coby Carruthers (Leonay GC), Blake Murray and Michael Organ (Penrith GC).
