Thank You Perce Over the past 15 years, Perce Denton has been the Captain of the Llandilo Rural Fire Brigade. Denton has been the trusted leader of a hard-working team of volunteers who put their lives on the line for the community in times of need. He recently made the decision to step aside as Captain at the Annual General Meeting in June, taking on the role as Deputy Captain.

“Having the support and appreciation for the Brigade from the Llandilo community has been amazing. My new role will be Deputy Captain with duties like attending fire calls, the training of our new and junior members, public relations and fundraising activities. I am still involved as a Cumberland Zone RFS trainer, where I conduct training and assessing for chainsaw operators and on-road/off-road driver training for our Four 4WD vehicles” said Perce.

“The Captain’s duties involve a substantial time commitment. I have chosen to spend this time with my family” he added.

Perce’s time as Captain has seen many changes to the local area since 2003, including the establishment and growth of Jordan Springs.

When asked what some of his highlights were as Captain, he listed having the support and co-operation of the Llandilo Brigade to carry out his role as an important one. There was also the celebration of 65 years of Llandilo Rural Fire Service at The Paceway in 2016, where an electronic and a hard copy of original minutes and history were created for their Brigade by Maralyn Tearle.

Also, on his list was conducting search and storm operations, attending fires across New South Wales, Victoria, Waroona, Western Australia in 2016, supporting junior members at the National Cadet Championships and general community activities.  Perce and his granddaughter Ashlee Denton | Image Supplied

Ropes Crossing Community Hub Open Day a Success A huge thank you to the local community, who came together recently to support and celebrate the Ropes Crossing Community Hub Open Day. The successful event had around 200 people wander through the beautiful facility throughout the course of the day.

Guests enjoyed dance and music performances from local groups and had an opportunity to meet community members face-to-face, who run classes and activities out of the Community Hub. The Kindifarm and face painting were a big hit with the families, as was their brand-new playground.

Thank you must also go to our local police, fire fighters, Ropes Crossing Public School P&C and Prue Car MP (Member for Londonderry) for being a part of their day. To find out more about what the residents of Ropes Crossing would like to see happen at the Community Hub, they conducted a survey.

Congratulations goes to resident Kylie, who won the prize draw from those who took part in the survey.

Our Television Star Jordan Springs’ Sapphire Penehoe is certainly living up to her name, with the 5-year-old starring in Mazda’s latest television commercial shown in Australia.

The young school girl, who began modelling at the age of just 2, attended a casting for the Mazda CX-8 Diesel television commercial in March, before receiving a successful call-up for the job in April.

“Sapphire filmed the Mazda television commercial in early May over 3 days in 3 different locations. She had a great time on set and was treated like royalty from the cast and crew. Seeing how they film driving scenes was amazing and a very different experience for her. She was a little shy when she first saw herself on TV, but now gets excited every time the ad comes on” said Carly Hoogenboom, Sapphire’s Mum. The pint-sized actor has already featured in quite a few television commercials in her short career. Sapphire’s next project will see her in an upcoming mini-series, where she appears in a small part .

“Sapphire absolutely loves acting and modelling. She is constantly asking when her next gig is” added Carly.

When asked what she wants to be when she grows up, Sapphire’s answer was “I want to be a Superhero!” There’s no doubt that she could make this happen through film, that’s for sure.

For anyone wanting to start their children in acting/modelling in the future, Carly has this advice, “It provides a great way to make friends outside of her school and has built her confidence up. It’s a big commitment on the parent’s side, but well worth it when you see your daughter on TV”.

One-Pot Beef And Beer Stew With Horseradish Dumplings

Ingredients 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 800g gravy beef, trimmed, cut into 4cm pieces 4 eschalots, peeled, halved 2 carrots, thickly sliced 2 parsnips, thickly sliced 200g Swiss brown mushrooms, halved 1 teaspoon cracked black pepper 3 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme leaves, plus extra small sprigs to serve 1 tablespoon plain flour 330ml bottle pale ale 1 tablespoon tomato paste 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 1 cup beef stock Horseradish Dumplings 1 1/2 cups self-raising flour 2 tablespoons chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley, plus extra sprigs to serve 100g chilled butter, grated 1/3 cup pale ale 1/4 cup horseradish cream Preparation 1. Preheat oven to 180C/160C fan-forced.

2. Heat oil in a large ovenproof casserole dish over mediumhigh heat. Cook beef, in 2 batches, for 5 minutes or until browned all over. Transfer to a plate.

3. Add eschalot, carrot, parsnip and mushroom to pan. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until vegetables start to brown.

Add pepper and thyme. Cook, stirring, for 30 seconds or until fragrant. Add flour. Stir to coat. Add beer. Cook for 6 minutes or until reduced by half. Add tomato paste, sauce, stock and 11⁄2 cups water. Bring to a simmer. Season with salt.

4. Return beef to pan. Cover. Transfer to oven. Bake for 1 hour 15 minutes or until beef is just tender. Increase oven to 200°C/180°C fan-forced.

5. Meanwhile, make Horseradish Dumplings: Combine flour and parsley in a bowl. Add butter. Using fingertips, rub butter in flour mixture until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Make a well in centre. Add beer and horseradish cream. Using a butter knife, stir until just combined. Divide mixture into 12 equal portions. Roll into balls.

6. Top stew with dumplings. Bake, uncovered, for 20 minutes or until dumplings are golden. Serve topped with extra thyme and parsley. https://www.taste.com.au/recipes/one-pot-beef-beer-stew-horseradishdumplings/

Jordan Springs Probus Club

The Club has been formed to support the Probus values of supporting and promoting Friendship, Fellowship and Fun in retirement. We are actively seeking new members from Jordan Springs and surrounding suburbs with currently no waiting list for applications.

The latest speaker was a young man who informed and educated the members with his story. A family man, starting off his career in finance and with a young family suddenly confronted with a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis. His story and the effects of his condition on his life was both enthralling and very emotional. Other speakers have been arranged to present their interests and information to our members at our monthly meetings.

We are in the process of establishing some special interest groups with the walking group meeting each Tuesday morning, except on the monthly meeting day, for two or three laps of the Jordan Springs Lake. Regular dining events are being planned with lunch and dinner at local eateries and restaurants. The

latest of these was a successful lunch at the Colonial Hotel with 26 members and potential members attending.

Members can look forward to an exciting program featuring the above events, interesting guest speakers, monthly meetings, the opportunity to travel locally or around the world and enjoy exclusive discounts through the Probus Member Benefits Scheme including access to exclusive Probus Travel Insurance plans, develop new interests and stay active.

Local Community makes Blankets for Charities Over the last month, members of the Jordan Springs Community have knitted hundreds of woollen squares, all with one purpose. That purpose was to keep those less fortunate, warm this Winter.

Participants ranged in age from 7 to 70 years and all shared a sense of achievement when their woollen squares added up.

Hundreds of squares ended up being donated and, as a result, four blankets in total have been completed and donated to The Creative Fringe’s “Think Outside The Square Challenge”. This was an initiative that provides warm blankets to The Mama Lana Foundation and The Haven.

Words Matter “Where did we ever get the crazy idea that in order to make children do better, first we have to make them feel worse? Think of the last time you felt humiliated or treated unfairly. Did you feel like cooperating or doing better?” questions Jane Nelsen (Founder of Positive Discipline Program) .

Some people think that screaming at children, putting them down, and calling them names, toughens them up. It’s a tough world out there, and we just gotta make them tougher.

Phooey!

The research is very clear.

Treating kids poorly can lead to mental health problems.

Do you know that 1 in 4 of the young people in Australia will develop clinical depression? Yep, in this ‘lucky country’. I have worked with kids as young as 8 years of age who have had depression.

Mental illness is a road going to a whole lot of suffering and heartache. Not only for the young person, but his/her parents, friends, school, and community.

I see a lot of this ‘toughen them up’ approach on the sporting field. Parents and coaches screaming at kids, calling them ‘losers’ and ‘rubbish’.

Silly me, I thought kids wanted to play sport to be active, to socialise, and to build their self-esteem, not to be bullied and abused. Frequently, quite vulnerable children do a sport in the community to build their resilience.

Most sports have a code of ethics for administrators, coaches, and spectators, which have strict guidelines which emphasise that the game should be enjoyable, children should be treated fairly and respectfully, and the duty of care required.

Remaining silent about a sports coach who swears at and yells at and degrades your child is certainly the easy way out, but this is how adults get away with child abuse. Emotional and verbal abuse desensitises your child to abuse. Would you accept a teacher, neighbour, or pastor/youth leader screaming at your kid and putting him/her down? If the answer is ‘no’ then don’t accept it on the sports field.

Words matter. So does your child’s wellbeing. As the old saying goes “winning isn’t everything”.

A local basketball club has the right attitude. They prominently display a sign saying…

The kids at The Lakes Christian College are diverting the Castlereagh community’s oral care waste from landfill for their chance to win one of five recycled community garden sets, as part of a national recycling competition run by Colgate, Chemist Warehouse and global recycling pioneers TerraCycle.

Between 23 March and 31 October 2018, the Colgate Community Garden Challenge invites pre-, primary and secondary schools nationwide to collect all brands of oral care waste and send it to TerraCycle, who will give the waste a second life by creating new products.

Five recycled community garden sets will be awarded to five schools, with each set including three garden beds, two custom-made benches, one rubbish bin and one sign, plus a $500 gardening voucher to buy seeds and plants. Besides showing how recycled materials can be used as a sustainable alternative to virgin plastic, the sets are designed to promote gardening and healthy eating among schools.

Elise Cox from The Lakes Christian College said the recycled community garden set would be a great way to engage students in sustainability.

“When we heard about the opportunity to recycle oral care waste, rather than sending it to landfill, we were really keen to join the Colgate Community Garden Challenge” Elise said.

“With a recycled community garden set we would teach our students how to grow plants, care for the environment and experience something made from oral care waste”.

The local community is encouraged to drop their used oral care products at The Lakes Christian College to be recycled, and vote for them every day online at www.terracycle.com.au/ colgategardenvoting.

“Colgate is thrilled to partner with Chemist Warehouse and TerraCycle to give kids the opportunity to win a recycled community garden set while reducing landfill” Colgate Vice President and General Manager of South Pacific, Julie Dillon said. “Well done, The Lakes Christian College – keep up the great recycling work!”

Old Toys New Cash Forget the lemonade stand in the front yard, the next generation of entrepreneurial youngsters are turning their unwanted toys into cash at My Kids Market NSW. “This year we have seen an increase in the number of kids hosting stalls with their parents to make some money to buy a prized toy or experience” said Jennifer Harrison, Market Organiser, My Kids Market NSW. Just recently we saw Alec and his Mum on a mission to sell his unwanted toys and books to make way for his long-awaited Xbox One! “The markets have always been a great way for mums and dads to clear out unwanted baby and kid’s items from the house and make some extra cash for the family”.

Sydney mum Leanne Lewis is one such parent. “My 8-year-old has been wanting an Xbox One for some time. We’ve resisted and decided that if he wanted it, he’d have to earn it. Selling all of his old toys was the way to go”. Leanne said “The benefit of the market stall was far greater than the cash 8-year-old Alec made to purchase his prized Xbox One. This was such a valuable learning exercise for my son. He got to work for something that he wanted, the value of working for his money, sorting through his old toys and honestly saying that he no longer wanted them, also pricing the toys, which proved to be hilarious fun!”

Here are their top five decluttering tips to help get you and the kids started: 1. Start your declutter in the morning rather than the afternoon.

You need the kids to be on board with the idea and not grumpy or tired. Plan a fun activity for the afternoon as a reward.

2. When starting your toy cupboard clear out, create four piles – keep, sell, donate and throw. At the end of most of our markets we have a local charity, such as Mummies Paying It Forward, come to collect any items stallholders don’t want to take home so you can kill two birds with one stone.

3. A visible goal will help keep their eyes on the prize! Stick a picture on the wall of whatever it is the kids are planning to do with the money they make from selling their toys.

4. When it is time to pack away the toys the kids have decided to keep, if there are any that you don’t think the kids will play with again, put them in a separate box and store it out of reach. If the kids ask for a toy in the box you can get it down, otherwise after a few months you can suggest that these are also toys that they no longer need as they didn’t even realise they were missing.

5. Encourage the kids to identify unwanted toys on an ongoing basis. Keep a box in the laundry or garage and anytime they decide that they have outgrown a toy they can pop it in the box for their next market stall. It will make the decluttering process much simpler next time.

We are all subject to our way of life which is determined by many factors. Many are caught up with disability which can be from congenital causes, mental illness or from a variety of situations. Many are caught up in meeting the situations in which they find themselves that seriously depreciates their well- being.

A mark for people, who in no matter what life situation they find themselves is discipline. Adjusting to and determining outcomes that are beneficial to life is governed by this aspect.

Discipline, if honest and just, while often placing strong demands for response, is a necessary and vital aspect of living.

The basic factors of honesty, respect for others and the focus on the good, makes not only the individual but also the community at large a measure of what could be. Sadly what is too often in place is the opposite. Self- satisfaction, immorality, greed and some of the destructive forces that are found both within families

and the community in general.

Discipline does not demand in isolation. It always has a purpose and given end. Ask any athlete or student. Being a parent requires a discipline that seeks the purpose of seeing a child reach responsible adulthood.

So discipline is a constant in any aspect of life. But what of failure? This is a factor that is seen all too often in life. The person suffering from alcoholism for example, is aware of the effects of failure. The student who fails an exam that determines his future knows the sting of failure. But in overcoming failure a new lease of life is given.

Trust placed in God through Jesus Christ and in the belief that the Holy Spirit is with us, a wonderful dimension can be explored and activated which gives meaning to ‘discipline’
