Camille Nominated to be the New Bondi Vet There is some exciting news in the local community with Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital’s Owner and Veterinarian, Dr Camille Brandt, being nominated to be the next Bondi Vet recently by her clients.

The popular Veterinarian’s video application to be the next Bondi Vet is now on the Bondi Vet website (www.bondivet.com. au) and Facebook page (www.facebook.com/bondivetofficial).

Carry The Queen’s Baton Local legends are being called on to carry the Queen’s Baton in Penrith when it hosts this prestigious event early next year.

The eyes of the Commonwealth will be on Penrith on Sunday 4 February 2018 as the Baton journeys towards its final destination, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) Opening Ceremony on 4 April 2018.

Across Australia approximately 3,800 batonbearers are needed to share the dream of the ‘friendly Games’ as part of the QBR. A community nomination program offers Penrith LGA and surrounding residents an opportunity to carry the Baton.

Penrith Mayor John Thain said he was delighted for Penrith to play a part in the Commonwealth Games again. “Penrith has played host to the Olympic Torch in 2000 and the Queen’s Baton in 2006,� Cr Thain said. “I encourage the community to nominate a local legend they think deserves to be a Batonbearer, the Queen’s Baton Relay is a rare opportunity to shine a light on the people and places that help make our community truly great.� Nominations can be made at gc2018.com/qbr.

In Scripture it is recorded that Jesus the Christ, disappeared from the sight of his followers. This recorded event became known in history as the Ascension into Heaven and became tradition within Christian teaching. On reflection the events present some particular difficulties as the concept of a three tier universe (the earth with heaven above and hell beneath) held by the writers is no longer tenable with what is known today: that our universe has no ‘up or down’ only ‘out there’ with gravity keeping everything in place.

Yet in common parlance we still ‘look up’ to space and as such the transition of Jesus to ‘out there’ tests the credibility of our ability to apply reason to assist our acceptance of the recorded event. Certainly one factor is that the Ascension is seen as a completion of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus and gives credence to the affirmation that Jesus is the Christ, in which is meant that the very long history of Semitic religion and prophesy found its completion.

As such the Ascension teaches the totality of our humanity being received into the totality of life in the Holy Trinity: the Father who created, the Son who allowed in his death humanity’s capability to enter into the ‘eternal now’ and the Holy Spirit that enables humanity ‘to be’.

Within this reality is found the realization that to depreciate our capabilities is to depreciate the Love of God. The Ascension can be placed within the context of our faith. Naturally if the life, death, resurrection and ascension is not accepted then any argument for the acceptance of the event is nullified. But, if on reflection and

through prayer and honest living, the work of Jesus the Christ is accepted then the Ascension takes on new meaning.

While astronomy raises more questions rather than providing answers [and this science is one of the most challenging amongst all sciences] it is in celebrating in worship the Ascension that a particular dimension is added.

This dimension is the ‘great unknown’ giving meaning and understanding as to why there is life, why there is this wonderful and almost incomprehensible universe. The life, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus allows answers to be provided that enhances understanding and allows the created to honour the Creator.

ANZAC Spirit Alive and Well in Llandilo

Peer Pressure It used to be something that we worried about with teens. But it seems that younger children need to learn how to deal with peer pressure these days. There is a lot of peer conflict in primary school and sometimes kids get caught up in stuff that they didn’t really anticipate and know how to manage.

For example, a child thinks it would be a good idea to hide someone else’s lunch bag. Maybe just for a laugh, to annoy that kid, or to make him angry. This is a simple example. It seems like a bit of a lark. But it also may be one act in a stream of events targeting one particular child, in which case it would be bullying.

The protagonist gets other kids involved in the scheme. Some of those kids may think it’s a good idea, but some might not and they don’t know how to say ‘no’ without fear of ridicule or losing the friendship.

Peer pressure is when your friends or other kids your age try to get you to do something that you don’t want to do. It is very hard to say ‘no’ to your friends, and it sometimes takes a lot of courage.

The steps in dealing with peer pressure are: 1. Calm down, using calming down strategies (belly breathing, talking ourselves through it, counting backwards, thinking calming thoughts); 2. Think the problem through; 3. Be cool, calm, and confident, and use an “I statement’ to let the other people know what you think in a polite way; 4. Tell the other kids why you don’t think it’s a good idea; 5. Suggest something else to do for fun.

This can be hard for kids to do. They may need some support from a trusted adult to help walk them through it. Kids also need to know who they can go to if the situation is dangerous or doesn’t stop. Image | www.pexels.com

Llandilo Public School came together to host their ANZAC Day Service and Militaria Exhibition, late last month. The local event saw parents, friends and members of the community join the students and teachers of the school to attend their ANZAC Day Memorial Service. A special museum exhibition of World War 1 and World War 2 military artefacts and memorabilia, commemorating the 100 year anniversary of World War 1 was also on display.

“The students were very much involved in the ANZAC Service.

They ran the ceremony and provided their own tributes, with each class making a floral wreath. They put in a lot of effort and we are proud of them” said Deborah Getley, Llandilo Public School Principal.

“Sarah Crammond was the Co-ordinator of the event. She did a great job of organising and bringing the community together”.

The museum exhibition’s display of militaria allowed the students to experience a better understanding of both World Wars 1 and 2. There were books, clothing, photographs and medals, including a visit from Chris Guest, Warrant Officer in the Australian Army.

“I was pleasantly surprised about how many students were interested in and knew about the ANZAC’s. The exhibition was excellent and brought back memories” said Chris.

For Leone Cutler, museum curator, the military exhibition was a culmination of many months of hard work and planning to bring it all together for the school and community to see.

“The military artefacts and memorabilia are from my family collection. It was very moving and humbling to put this display together. It brought great enjoyment to see how interested the children were from a visual and historical point of view. Many people were fascinated” explained Leone.

The Village @ Jordan Springs Launch Event was officially held last month at the Jordan Springs Sales and Information Office, with many people coming together to discuss the new project.

Guests were treated to four presentations at the event. The People’s Magician

Local magician C.J Winter has just returned from living, working and performing in China for the past ten years and has his sights set firmly on a return to the Australian performing arena to share some of his fantastic experiences and tricks he learnt whilst abroad to his audiences.

The close-up magician has been performing for nearly twenty years, captivating audiences all around the world, taking him to places like Vanuatu, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai and Inner

Mongolia. He describes the kinds of tricks he performs as small and intimate, yet they happen right under his audience’s noses!

“I first got started in magic when I was nine or ten years old.

I was shy as a kid and didn’t quite fit in. After watching David Copperfield on TV, I was hooked. It was also a great way for me to express myself” said C.J. When he was younger, after learning his first rubber band trick, his only source of inspiration was through magic books he borrowed from the local library. Now, with the advent of technology, there is no limit to C.J’s already impressive repertoire of tricks.

Surprisingly, it’s his most simplest of tricks that audiences keep coming back for; “Over the years, I’ve spent thousands of dollars on new material and equipment, but the one people ask for again and again is my sponge-ball routine, where little red balls are made to vanish, reappear and multiply in the spectators’ hand. Ironically, it’s one of the first effects I ever learned as a beginner, but people really seem to love it!”

C.J is most proud of his ‘cups and balls’ trick, something he continues to perfect, even after many years. “I still perform mine with a set of simple copper cups that I bought with the profits of my first paid performance, and they’ve been my faithful travel companions for nearly two decades” he said.

New Vinnies Shop Opens in Jordan Springs The newest Vinnies Shop opened in Jordan Springs last month, with the official opening taking place on 19th April. The shop is located at Shops 6 and 7, 56-66 Lakeside Parade, adjacent to the Jordan Springs Shopping Centre.

On offer at the new shop is a range of quality second-hand clothing for women, men and children, as well as accessories, homewares, bric-a-brac, books, toys and other household items.

Susan Goldie, Executive Officer of the St Vincent de Paul Society Parramatta Central Council, was very pleased to be opening a shop in the heart of Jordan Springs and enjoyed meeting the locals at the official opening.

“The Society relies heavily on funds generated by our Shops to provide services for people in local communities across Western Sydney who are experiencing disadvantage,” says Ms Goldie.

“Our customers can be assured that by shopping with us, they are supporting Western Sydney Vinnies services such as our Vinnies Van and our community hubs. We also provided over $1.5 million worth of assistance to the local community, assisting over 14,000 people.”

Phillip Basti, Retail Operations Manager of the St Vincent de Paul Society Parramatta Diocesan Central Council, was also pleased with the new shop.

Method 1. Place graham crackers in a plastic bag and crush them into fine crumbs using a rolling pin. Alternatively, a food processor can be used to crush the crackers.

2. Pour the graham cracker crumbs into a medium bowl with the melted butter.

3. Mix until the crumbs take on the character of a coarse, wet sand.

4. Pour the crumbs into a 9-inch pie dish. Press the crumb firmly into the dish, making sure to coat the bottom and sides of the dish evenly. Once the crust has been formed, place the pie dish into the refrigerator to firm up.

5. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together cream cheese and maple syrup. Once combined, pour the mixture into pie crust and return it to refrigerator to chill.

6. Meanwhile, add half of the blueberries and strawberries to a saucepan over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons of water, lemon juice, and sugar.

7. Cook for 2-4 minutes or until sugar is dissolved and berries begin to expel their juice, creating a loose, deep-red mixture.

8. In a small bowl or ramekin, mix cornstarch and remaining 2 tablespoons of water into a smooth paste. Add the cornstarch mixture to the berries and cook for an additional 2 minutes, until the filling thickens. Remove from heat and set aside.

9. Allow the mixture to cool for 5 minutes.

10. Remove the chilled pie crust with the cream cheese layer from the refrigerator. Take the remaining blueberries and strawberries and evenly distribute them over the top of the cream cheese layer.

11. Next, pour the cooked berry mixture over the top of the fresh fruit and cream cheese, filling in the rest of the pie crust. Spread the filling evenly.

12. Chill the pie completely in the refrigerator for 1.5-2 hours before serving.

13. Enjoy!

For many mums around Australia, the day to day activities of running a home can be hard work. Add to this those that work and, in particular, those who own and run successful businesses and you have the ingredients for a truly special person. This is certainly the case for Jordan Springs mum, Karen Brooks.

Karen took over the day to day running of Shaolin Martial Arts Centres (SMAC) early last year, a local business that had already been running and was started by husband Stuart.

“I was fortunate that the business had been running for years when I took over, so most of the ground work had been done already. I’ll be honest; I have great kids who don’t mind getting themselves ready in the morning. We are a blended family of 5 kids so being organised is essential for us” explained Karen.

Balancing being a mum and a business owner is tricky at times and Karen admits that making time for everyone can be hard. To help keep this balance, she tries to make night time, especially between dinner and bedtime, just about family. Her rule then is no marketing, no emails and no phone calls. She uses the time during school hours and early afternoons for work. This way, her kids don’t feel like it’s all about the business.

When it comes to being a successful working mum, Karen believes this is due to the hard working team behind her, “I really am only successful because of the team we have at SMAC. My husband and our fantastic team of instructors make it easy for me. The business has grown to the point where I can take our kids with me if I need to and it’s not a problem. I feel very blessed every day”.

Karen has three key points when it comes to advice for any mothers wanting to start their own business. The first point is time. When you have kids, knowing what times you can and can’t work are important and you need to maximise this time.

The second point is to have a support system. Have people like your husband/partner, family and friends around you for help and guidance. This includes asking for constructive criticism and honest feedback. The third point is to know your market.

“This is going to sound corny, but every day is Mother’s Day for me. My kids are my world and I adore all of them. Foot stomping and eye rolling aside, having them at home with you and curling up on the lounge talking with them are things you only get for a short amount of time” ended Karen.

Who Are MOPS? MOPS (Mothers Of Preschoolers) is a group run by Christian mums, for mothers of preschoolers (pregnancy - kindy). The group hopes to provide a fun, secure and caring environment for mums to share, learn and grow together as they raise young children. The group began in 2004 at St Tom’s Anglican Church in Cranebrook.

MOPS meets at St Tom’s Anglican Church (29 Callisto Drive in Cranebrook) usually on the 4th Wednesday of the month from 10am to 12 noon. There are two evening meetings a year to cater for their MOPS mums who are unavailable due to work. The cost of each meeting is $10.

Their May meeting is on Tuesday 23 May at 7:30pm, with guest speaker Mel Hayde (author of Terrific Toddlers books), speaking on Routines and Boundaries with your Preschooler.

While their children are minded by carers in their Moppets programme, they enjoy mum-time, including: • Morning tea • A talk by a mum or a guest speaker • Discussion in small groups • Creative time (craft or creative activity) • Time for unbroken conversation and getting to know other local mums MOPS talks include Christian content, but you don’t need to be a Christian to attend. They hope their talks are practical and encouraging for any mum of young children. There are approximately 20 mums that attend each month, plus the MOPS and Moppets (children’s) team.

“We enjoy getting to know women in our community, seeing and being a part of ongoing friendships and relationships that develop, and supporting one another in our mothering walk” said Bec, Co-Ordinator of MOPS Cranebrook.

Another Mother’s Day Without Mum It feels like yesterday that I was writing about missing Mum on Mother’s Day. Mum died on Christmas Day 2015, she was 85 years old.

Mum had dementia and for a long time she didn’t know who I was. She rarely called me by name and when my eldest daughter would visit her, Mum would introduce her, as “This is my daughter Cait”.

I remember the first time that I knew Mum had no idea who I was. I walked through the door, she was sitting in her chair and when she looked up I saw a huge smile come across her face.

She said, “I’m so glad to see you”, she walked toward me, and she grabbed me and hugged me tightly. She said, “I’ve been waiting for ages to have a cup of coffee, I haven’t seen you for so long”.

While we were walking to the coffee shop she asked me where Cait was because she hasn’t seen her for years. It was a strange feeling that Mum didn’t know me but in a weird way I was okay with it. She was always excited to see me and I loved seeing the excitement on her face when I went to visit her.

That’s the thing that I miss about Mum. I miss her smile, she lit up the room with her smile.

It’s been almost a year and a half since she died. I still miss her and think about her every day. I’m sure there are many people reading this who miss their mother this Mother’s Day (and every other day). Remember you’re not alone, their memories live on in us.
