New Community Resource Hub for Thriving Community

Jordan Springs’ thriving and active community will soon have a new place to call home following council approval of the Jordan Springs Community Resource Hub. A joint initiative between Penrith City Council and Lendlease, the Community Resource Hub will provide locals with the

opportunity to access greater services from a range of training, health and recreational groups.

Located in the heart of the Jordan Springs town centre, the state-of-the-art facility will bring together local businesses and groups with meeting, IT and multipurpose rooms, a kitchen, and wide outdoor spaces. It will also include a community hall seating up to 120 people, ideal for family celebrations and gatherings.

Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said the new addition to Jordan Spring will be a great asset to the community.

“The proposed Jordan Springs Community Resource Hub will be highly welcomed as a space for everybody to come together to connect, learn and grow.”

Arthur Ilias, General Manager for Lendlease Communities in NSW/ACT, said the Community Resource Hub demonstrates Lendlease’s ongoing commitment to providing community infrastructure for residents of the surrounding community.

Xavier College Students Excel Xavier College has many talented athletes attending it’s campus in Llandilo but only a few would be as busy as sixteen-year old twins Lily and Taylor Newbould.

The two Year 11 students are currently spending up to six days a week at basketball in the Hawkesbury and Penrith districts, both at a representative level and in domestic competitions.

Both young women play in the Hawkesbury Jets Under 18 Women’s team but have also accepted a call-up to the Senior State League Women’s team, to help bolster numbers in the Association’s fledgling year in the State competition.

The two Representative Teams (18’s and State League) games are all played on weekends and as a result, neither Lily or Taylor has been able to fully commit to the State League team, having a prior commitment to the 18’s when there is a clash of times / days / venues.

The schedule for both players covers every day of the week except Wednesday, which offers a welcome respite to an otherwise arduous schedule of training and games for both the representative and domestic competitions.

Basketball won’t simply come to a standstill at the end of the season, with both Lily and Taylor joining the Jets Under 16 and Under 18 teams for a playing tour in the USA. In July of each year commemoration is made of Saint James Zebedee by the Church. Scholars set his death in either 43 or 44 C.E. by Herod Agrippa 1 who ruled the Roman Province of Jerusalem. His death was the first of what was to be a long history of martyrdom of those who believed and followed Jesus the Christ.

Martyrdom is, it is sad to record, also a common occurrence in the present day. In conforming our lives by following the Christ with the realization that this creates the necessity of discipline, not in terms of coercion but rather in terms of how far we are prepared to accept God’s Love, our minds and bodies are transformed to show who we are, not by what we say but by what we are and do. It is by this we ‘show’ Jesus the Christ to those who don’t believe. Faith is seen not to be hypocritical but a means given to us by God to live life to the full.

The reality of life however, presents particular challenges which sometimes overwhelm, such as sickness, disaster, the tragedy of war, and personal faith can be tested in these situations. How often do we cry “why me” in many situations. Certainly for those who have been executed for the faith must certainly have asked this question. The strength of Faith strangely enough, is found in that very question.

Jesus in his life challenged the accepted political, social and religious status in which he found himself. This challenge has come down through the ages by the simple message of the Church: repent [‘think again’]. Time in relation to eternity, with all its joy and agony, through repentance and accepting the discipline of Jesus provides the realization of heaven.

Demand continues to grow at Jordan Springs with over 400 lots sold since November 2015. The development has been designed with community at its core focus.

In July, the Jordan Springs community will celebrate NAIDOC week. Little Women, the much loved story by Louisa May Alcott, follows the lives of the March sisters, Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy as they go from childhood to womanhood.

The years are filled with the hardships of poverty, the promise of love, the sadness of loss and hope for a brighter future.

The March family is living in genteel poverty after Mr March lost their money. Meg and Jo March, the elder sisters, both work outside the home for money to support the family. Meg teaches children of a nearby family, while Jo aids her grand-aunt March, a wealthy widow whose strength is failing. Beth helps around the house, and Amy attends school.

Their lives are touched and changed throughout the years by Laurie and his grandfather (the March’s neighbors), Aunt March, John Brooke (the shy tutor of Laurie) and Professor Bhaer (a German expatriate who encourages Jo with her writing).

This month, we continue the series on ‘Parent Traps’ that we started in April.

Escalation Traps – Child Escalation Children can learn that to get what they want, they escalate their behaviour. They do more of everything - whinge, nag, cry, scream, shout. Anything to get what they want.

Why do they do this? They do it because it works for them.

The parent gets tired or overwhelmed, and just gives in.

What does the child learn from this?

To get what I want I keep pushing until I get what I want.

Escalation Traps – Parent Escalation A parent asks a child to do something. The child doesn’t move.

The parent asks again. And again. And again. After several requests the parent gets frustrated and starts to yell.

When the parent is angry, screaming, counting, or making threats, the child decides that it is time to do as the parent asks.

What does the child learn from this?

My parent is only serious about the request when she is yelling. This is why parents say “my child never listens to me”.

Do these escalation traps happen at your place? Sometimes the child and parent escalate together and it’s a screaming match and a fight over something simple.

What Is The Remedy?

Make a clear, calm request. Make sure you have your child’s attention by saying his name, getting eye contact, touching him on the shoulder. Tell him what to do rather than what not to do. And make it a request, not a question. If the child complies, give him descriptive praise “thank you for doing as I ask”. If your child does not comply after two clear, calm requests, calmly give him a consequence. The consequence doesn’t need to be harsh, you just need to let your child know that you mean what you say.

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT... LLANDILO PUBLIC SCHOOL?

Lots Happening at Llandilo PS Term 2 has been a busy one. Stage 2 students kicked off the term with a visit to the Rocks, where they dressed up and learnt all about Convict Settlement. Years 1 & 2 went to ‘Wannabes’ where they got to role play their ambitions of what they might like to be when they grow up.

In Sport, our PSSA Football and Netball teams have competed successfully in the winter comp, which will continue into Term 3.

We also hosted an after school AFL clinic that was very popular with students. Earlier this term, one of our talented basketball players travelled to Tamworth to compete in the Sydney West team.

Our Dance, Choir and Recorder groups have worked tirelessly to learn their repertoire and are really gearing up for their performances at the Joan Sutherland Centre, the Opera House and Cranebrook High School.

The 150th Walkathon run by the P&C, has raised funds for our school and provided everyone with an excuse to dress up for the day in costumes reflecting the bygone years of Llandilo. The P&C also ran an ‘Inter- relate’ information evening for parents.

School Captains were recognised at a civic reception run by Penrith Council. They both received a certificate presented by the Mayor at the Evan Theatre. The council has continued to support our school during skype sessions with our sister school in Fujieda. Both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor visited classrooms whilst we were chatting with Japan, as they had just returned from a trip to Fujieda. This excited students in both countries.

As the term has come to an end, we look forward to another busy one starting in July.

Helping Traumatised Kids I’ve just spent 6 days in Melbourne at the International Childhood Trauma Conference. I saw Dan Siegel, Pat Ogden and many more.

Toxic stress and trauma impact children, adolescents and adults in many different ways.

We see the result of that in the way children don’t know how to express their feeling/emotions.

Sometimes it looks like they’re lashing out in anger but this might not be the case, they may feel terrified or feel unsafe.

Steve Porges put it best, “The removal of threat is not the same as creating safety”. Just think on this for a moment. Kids may be living (in their heads) with fear, loss, trauma and need to be shown that these emotions can be shared with others and they won’t be punished for feeling that way.

Being yelled at can be very traumatising for a child.

Let’s say they bring a rat into the house to show you and it’s time for lunch.

You might yell, “Get that thing out of here, you know it’s lunch time. Why do you always do this?” a better way to respond would be, “I can see you’re interested in the rat, we’ll have a look at it later and we’ll eat lunch now”.

The child gets recognised and feels a connection with you because you have shown interest in the rat and he knows that he needs to eat lunch.

Studies show that the brain is altered by being yelled at or bullied.

Tips on helping them integrate their emotions into their life: • Remove them from the situation • Let them talk about their own subjective situation • Don’t judge them • Just listen • Give them other endings to their story by giving them another ending Have fun with your kids.
