Jonas Thinks School Is Cool It’s that time of year, where thousands of girls and boys across the state wave goodbye to their parents as they start ‘big school’ for the first time.

One of those children starting school for the first time was local boy Jonas Hoffman.

Five year old Jonas attends Corpus Christi Catholic Primary School at Cranebrook. Despite being the first of his siblings to start big school this year, Jonas had friends that he met at preschool that now go to Kindergarten with him.

“Jonas is a very happy boy with loads of confidence. He was so excited to start school and couldn’t wait. As his mother, I was a tad nervous, but also excited for Jonas and the next chapter in his life” said Amanda Hoffman, Jonas’ Mum. When asked what he liked most about school, he said “finding new friends, learning to read and playing sport at my new big school”.

Jonas, who turns 6 in July, has already made up his mind what he wants to be when he finishes school. “When he grows up, he wants to be an ambulance driver, so that he can help people. But, when he isn’t too busy, he’ll also be a race car driver” lamented Amanda.

Are we experiencing a drowning epidemic?

I had wanted to start with a slightly belated ‘Happy New Year’, but after the events of the past month it just doesn’t seem appropriate. It has been anything but a happy time for the families of the more than 20 people who drowned over Christmas and New Year. That’s 3 to 4 times more than usual over this period, and almost as many water deaths as car fatalities. Some are calling it a drowning epidemic.

The worst thing is, so many of these tragedies are preventable.

From toddlers to teenagers and grown adults, factors such as unlatched gates, unfenced ponds, swimming alone and alcohol consumption all have played their part.

Even more frightening is the fact that in some of the deaths reported, there were no obvious risk factors at play. Fences and gates were safety compliant and closed, there was nothing to be climbed near the fence, however the child still made it into the pool and lost their life.

It can happen to any of us. On Christmas Eve my 2 year old son somehow managed to get his back float off, and was standing on the edge of the pool, about to jump in, when I saw him.

Adults were all around, just metres away, chatting, but no one was looking directly at my toddler. Thank goodness I noticed, but with a house full of guests, I could have just as easily been distracted for the next 2 minutes, and the splash may not have been heard by anyone amongst the chatter and music………it just doesn’t bear thinking about.

My point is, no one is immune, and we all have to be vigilant.

Which is where the layers of protection come in, so if one layer fails, hopefully the next will be the safety net that prevents a tragedy. Fence the pool, shut the gate, teach your kids to swim from a young age, ensure active adult supervision, and learn CPR, just in case. Never swim alone, wear a life jacket when boating, and alcohol and drugs should always be avoided when swimming or near water.

Gong Xi Fa Cai: Jordan Springs Welcomes the Year of the Rooster From Chinese lion dancers and family activities to entertainment and mouth-watering food, the community of Jordan Springs celebrated Chinese New Year on Saturday 28 January with a fun-filled event hosted by Lendlease.

From 10am to 12pm, residents and locals at Jordan Springs enjoyed a morning filled with live entertainment, food stalls, children activities and games at the Jordan Springs Town Centre to welcome the Year of the Rooster.

The Jordan Springs Chinese New Year celebrations included a live performance from Chinese lion dancers, face painting, airbrushed tattoos and Chinese cuisine.

There was also a range of activities for the whole family, with children invited to create their own Chinese New Year calendar and themed colouring-in stencils.

Arthur Ilias, Lendlease Communities General Manager NSW/ ACT, said the event was designed to celebrate diversity within the Jordan Springs community by enjoying the flavours and festivities of the Chinese New Year. “It was great to welcome the Year of the Rooster with all our residents and wish the community good health and prosperity in the year ahead,â€? said Mr Ilias. “We encouraged everyone to come along, mingle with other residents and locals, and experience the festivities and celebrations of the wonderful multicultural event that is Chinese New Year. “Lendlease is committed to supporting a range of cultural and community groups at Jordan Springs, and we look forward to hosting many more cultural celebrations, activities and events in 2017,â€? added Mr Ilias. ď ˛ď€ Image Supplied | Lendlease

Down through history a great deal of study has been directed towards understanding human behaviour. During the last two centuries, great progress has been made in the fields of psychiatry, psychology and sociology.

Present day thinking tends to stress the effects of genetics, the situation in which the person is placed and the ‘forces’ applied as one grows.

Amongst this, the question of free will is strongly debated and the actuality of free will remains an open question.

Of interest is that the age old teaching of the concept of sin as found in the Christian scriptures still holds its ground.

In the Scriptures, sin is simply the reality human behaviour, both individual and collective, can exhibit the depreciation of the common good, can destroy, can manipulate. Sin is the downside of humanity and there is no need to provide examples of this reality in human behaviour.

Now in relation to sin as such, Christian teaching finds a particular emphasis in the life and work of Jesus summed up in the theme ‘salvation’. Jesus in his life and particularly in his execution, directs our life to the reality that in him sin is destroyed and that life is not a tale told by an idiot, but is the response to the realization that all behaviour can be placed in trust: individually and collectively it can be declared that ‘we live authentically’- but this is because all things are done ‘in Christ’. As such by growing ‘in Christ’ progressively, salvation [ie: wholeness] is achieved.

Now sickness, disease, death, natural disaster etc do take their

toll but in the ‘whole’, the full reality is achieved. It is governed by hope and conviction that Jesus, the Christ, is our salvation.

Living within this context; life takes on a new and richer perspective. It allows speculation on many questions such as ‘who am I’? What do we mean by ‘community? Thus the individual and the wider community caught up as the ‘human whole’, can find its true purpose and function by ‘living in Christ’.

Emma Channels Her Inner Adele

Although there is a huge amount of pressure for children to learn a vast array of skills at school, the first and most enduring lessons are learnt at home within the context of the family and parent-child relationship. Parents are a child’s first teacher.

This year, I will focus on skills that you can teach your children within the family environment.

Recently, a parent said to me that her mother told her not to worry about her children squabbling and fighting. Grandma said “they’ll learn to sort it out themselves”. The mother asked me “is this right?’. I replied that children aren’t born with conflict resolution or problem solving skills. These skills need to be taught like you would teach a child to tie his/her shoe laces or use their manners. If “left to it”, most children will resort to using yelling, aggression, or withdrawal to resolve conflict because frankly that is what is role modelled for them most of the time.

Problem Solving 1. State what the problem is.

Most children (and many adults) will blame someone else for the conflict. I get children to state the problem in an objective way, without blame. Instead of saying “Jamie won’t share the ball with me”, we get to a point where the problem is stated as “we both want to play with the ball”. Blame is a dead end street, we get stuck and can’t find a way out.

2. After the problem is stated, we then have to come up with some solutions to the problem.

Children as young as 5 can usually come up with 4 or 5 solutions. It doesn’t matter to me if it is a silly solution (for example, ‘take the ball off Jamie’), because the next step sorts that out. I rarely provide children with a solution, because I don’t want them to become dependent on me to solve their problems. I want them to learn the skill and use it.

3. For each of the solutions, ask: • Is it safe?

• Is it fair?

• How will other people feel about it?

• Will it work?

4. Choose the best solution, and apply it.

5. Review how it worked. If it didn’t work, try another solution.

You will need to be really consistent in supporting children to learn and use this skill. It will take longer than a year of consistent use.

Over on my blog (https://handsheartsminds.wordpress. com/), I am going to be writing about the types of skills that we as parents need to teach children to give them great life skills. I have counted at least 30. I will also be trying to add a visual that you can download and put on the fridge or your noticeboard.

To many people, British songstress Adele is an inspiration who touches hearts all around the world with her soulful voice and meaningful songs like ‘Rolling In The Deep’, ‘Rumour Has It’ and ‘Hello’. One such person who has been inspired by her is local talented voice coach and singer Emma Kirk, who launched her show ‘The Adele Experience’ last year, performing as Adele.

Emma’s musical resume is very impressive, beginning at the age of just 9 years of age. This lead her to singing professionally at the age of 15 doing singing quests in the club circuit and joining a local band. Since then, she has performed alongside many well-known Australian artists such as John Farnham, Jimmy Barnes, Guy Sebastian, Human Nature, Christine Anu, Marcia Hines and Deni Hines.

Since launching ‘The Adele Experience’ at Evan Theatre in 2016, the show is running successfully throughout Sydney, Regional New South Wales and has received rave reviews on various cruise ship brands such as P&O and Princess Cruises.

“Anytime I performed an Adele song, I would get a great reaction or response from my audience, so I did a little research and decided to produce my own show” said Emma. “She has also inspired me to have belief in myself as a performer in regards to not worrying about the status of body image in the music industry as she has a very ‘just do it’ attitude. This helped me launch myself as a soloist” she explained.

Covering Adele’s music and her vocal range is no mean feat and is testament to just how talented Emma really is. “It can be vocally challenging at times if my voice is not healthy, but most times I feel singing her songs comes quite naturally for me. I studied her voice for quite some time to ensure I captured her vocal style” replied Emma.

Despite her close affinity to Adele, Emma is yet to meet her musical inspiration; “I would love the honour of meeting her one day, purely to thank her for her music and inspiration to pursue my own musical dreams. I’m not sure if she knows about my shows, but I hope that if she does, she feels proud that I do her justice”.

Founded in May last year, a group of Dads in the local area have come together to form the Jordan Springs Dads. The group currently has 257 members and is managed by three Dads, consisting of Russ Thomas (Founder), Tam Nguyen (President) and Rhys Bulig (Administrator).

“The Jordan Springs Dads is definitely a group that plays a big role. It gives Dads a place where they can talk and be open about anything without being judged or harshly criticised.

There is always someone in the group who is willing to help, whether it be mental health, cars, general assistance or friendship” said Tam Nguyen.

The local group meets up every month. This allows members to get to know fellow Dads and also for new members to meet and greet one another. They recently ran a fundraiser alongside the Jordan Springs Sports Oval opening and raised $2,700 for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. The Jordan Springs Dads have three indoor soccer teams competing weekly that are sponsored by local businesses; TopGun Painting and Decorating and Ace Windscreens.

The group has plans to get involved in more community events and to raise more money for different charities in the future.

The Country Show Returns

A little bit of Mount Panorama will descend on Luddenham Showground on the 18th and 19th of February as the historic grounds will rumble to the roar of the 500-horse power V8 donks as Holden and Ford Utes scream around the main arena.

All the way from Adelaide, the Trackskill V8 Race Ute Show is unquestionably one of Australia’s most spectacular car stunt teams and has been seen all over the country. Another feature will see these daring drivers pit their talents again a horse, bike and supped up lawnmower in an obstacle course.

Living up to its motto of ‘The Country Show’, the annual event takes place for the 113th time on the picturesque Luddenham Showgrounds. The event is run entirely by a small, but very hard working committee, many of whom can trace their family’s association with the show all the way back to the first one.

The show will kick off each morning with horse classes held on the main arena, known through the equine industry as one of the major lead up events to the Sydney Royal Easter Show. There will

be cowboys battling it out with rank bulls in the open bull ride including rodeo champions of the future in the steer and poddy calf rides. The main arena will feature the dog high jump contest, yank-a-ute for the adults and yank-a-buggy for the kids.

If artistic ability is more your style, there will be classes of painting, photography, quilt making, flowers, homebrew, farm produce and even Lego building. Always renowned for the quality stage entertainment, there will be a talent quest, reptile displays with a difference, clowns and shearing demos. The main band this year is ‘Rough Stock’, back by popular demand, this great country-rock band hails from Riverstone. And, of course, the fireworks on Saturday night will be under the control of Foti’s, who are responsible for the Sydney Harbour New Year’s Eve Fireworks Show.

Held in adjoining paddock will be the ever-popular sheep dog trials on Sunday. The day will also see the well-liked wood chopping contest. The stage program will include events such as ice cream eating, whip cracking and the Luddenham Country Kid hitting the stage.

Ingredients (16 oz) can of strawberry frosting 12 oz bag of white chocolate chips Method 1. Prepare a 9x9 pan by spray lightly with cooking spray.

2. Over a double boiler, or in the microwave, melt your white chocolate chips.

3. When chips are melted, remove from heat and stir in your strawberry frosting, evenly.

4. Spread in your prepared pan and place in fridge to set for 30 minutes.

5. Cut into squares to serve.

Researchers at Western Sydney University are looking for participants for a study exploring the long-term experiences of losing a parent during childhood.

There is a growing body of knowledge regarding childhood loss and grief, but little is known about adults who have lived with childhood parental death and their subsequent parenting experiences.

To better understand this sensitive issue, researchers from the School of Nursing and Midwifery are inviting parents who have experienced childhood parental death to share their experiences.

Lead Researcher Dr. Gill Murphy says the study will give a voice to those who may have lived with long standing grief.

“This study will generate significant new information about helpful responses for children who experience the unfortunate death of a parent,” says Dr. Murphy.

“This new knowledge will highlight potential interventions to support children and adults in their journeys of loss and recovery.”

“It will also be relevant for health and social care professionals who are working with families who lost a parent.”

The research team is calling for participants who are happy to meet with Dr. Murphy, to take part in the study. In particular, the researchers are looking for English speaking adults who lost a parent as a child and who are now a parent themselves.

Good Grief Valentine’s Day! This is a cruel celebration day for those who have suffered the death of their partner. It’s a day to rejoice the love between two people, to be romantic and thoughtful.

There’s heaps of advertising about romancing your loved one.

Buy chocolates, jewellery, flowers, dinner, movies and anything else you can think of. It’s difficult to watch others knowing you won’t be with the one you love, doing any of these things or receiving anything to celebrate the love that you share.

Okay, let’s make it a day of love, a time you honour your lovedone the way you choose. Your grief is unique, don’t let anyone tell you how you should be feeling. Don’t feel guilty wanting to be alone. Give yourself permission to have your feelings (whatever they are).

Remembering Your Valentine Here are some activities you can do on Valentine’s Day to celebrate the love you shared.

1. Write a love letter – remember how you were with each other; recall stories of adventure, love and romance; your feelings of grief and how you’re coping with day-to-day life.

I’m sure you can add to this list.

2. Donate to a charity in your loved one’s name.

3. Invite friends and family for a meal to remember your loved one. Cook their favourite food and serve their favourite beverage. Make a toast to them.

4. Buy a special candle, cook a special meal, light the candle and remember wonderful times you spent together.

5. If you feel strong enough, watch a movie that you enjoyed together. This can be done by yourself or with friends and family.

6. Self-care is important. Attend a yoga class, spend a day at the spa, have a massage, facial etc. Your choice.

7. Volunteer- either for a charity or R.S.P.C.A. or animal shelter.

Helping others is uplifting, gives you satisfaction and connection.

Don’t push yourself, do what is comfortable and enjoy your day as much as you can.

$2000 Guide Dog Donation from the Santa Photos with Pets Santa Claus visited Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2016 and photos were taken with your pets. We all enjoyed watching your pets get dressed up with Santa hats and scarves and sitting on Santa’s knee for a photo. With a lot of laughs and giggles, we took many cute Santa photos.

Thank you for all of the donations for the photos. With your great support, we raised $2000 for The Guide Dogs NSW/ACT!! Wow!! We all had lots of fun and The Guide Dogs get a great donation.

Keeping Your Pets Safe in the Heat Wave With the unrelenting hot weather, it is important to look after your pets: • Provide shelter for your pets, so they get away from direct sunlight. • Provide plenty of water. Animals do not sweat like humans and they rely on the evaporation of the water in their mouths to cool themselves down. So they need extra water so they do not overheat. • Provide extra water sources in case they are spilled. • Provide kiddy pools so your pet can lay in the water. • Bring your pets indoors with air conditioning, if possible.

• Consider day boarding in air conditioning. • Avoid exercising your pets during the heat of the day. Walk them in the early morning, or later at night when it is cooler. • Do not leave pets in a car or vehicle. • If your pet has a medical condition, they may be more prone to heat stroke: e.g. obesity; Brachycephalic breeds (shortnosed/flat-faced) e.g. Pugs, English bull dogs, French bulldogs, Pekingese and Persian and Himalayan cats; Respiratory disease/ breathing problems - laryngeal paralysis, collapsing trachea; Thick/long hair coat; Heart problems/Cardiovascular disease; Extremes in age (young/old); Neurological disease.

Signs of Heat Stroke Common signs include: Incessant panting; Drooling, salivating; Agitation, restlessness; Very red or pale gums; Bright red tongue; Increased heart rate; Breathing distress; Vomiting, Diarrhoea (possibly with blood); Signs of mental confusion, delirium; Dizziness, staggering; Lethargy; weakness; Muscle tremors; Seizures; Collapsing and lying down; Little to no urine production; Coma or Death.

How do you treat a pet with heatstroke?

First step is to instigate Emergency First Aid by bathing your pet in cool water.

Heat stroke is a life threatening emergency - always see a vet.
