Welcome to the October edition of your community news. We received a phenomenal amount of feedback about our spectacular Party Feature in the September edition. The Silver Fox Visits Regentville Regentville Public School was recently treated to a visit from Jessica Fox, Silver Olympic Medalist at this year’s London Olympics. Special guest Jessica presented students with their sports awards and showcased her incredible “winning” videos.

Jessica, a tremendously talented teenager from Leonay said “Winning the Silver Medal was a proud moment for me. The Opening Ceremony in London, in particular, was a great highlight. It’s really hard to describe how wonderful the atmosphere was”.

Jessica spoke in detail of her experience at the Olympics, elaborating on the ‘special moments’ that saw her walk away with the Silver medal! It was clear that Jessica’s enthusiasm rubbed off on many of the students, who walked away with aspirations that they too, may one day represent Australia at the Olympics and win a medal.

A Healthy Spiritual Life We all know how good health and keeping fit is very important. The benefits of eating well combined with exercise really pay off; not only are you able to do more but being healthy means it also cuts down the risk of serious illness such as stroke or heart attack. With this in mind, we often see people out jogging or walking around Glenmore Park; playing sport, going to gyms and doing aerobics. Others want to get healthy ‘on the inside’ so they cut fatty foods, salt and sugar from their diets and increase the quantity of fruit and veggies.

Just as an anchor keeps a boat safe and secure, so too does a healthy relationship with God keep our life safe and secure.

A strong and healthy relationship with God gives hope and confidence. A healthy relationship with God helps us weather the many storms life throws at us. The more we know God, the more we can trust God. The better we understand God’s love and goodness towards us, life becomes more and more secure for us.

At Glenmore Park Anglican Church we firmly believe the value of strong and growing spiritual health. Penrith City Council has launched its fourth annual “Water in Penrith” ‘Duck Flap’ by Akos Lumnitzer – photographic competition and is 2011 Open Winner encouraging amateur photographers to snap up images that show the value of water.

New Mayor for Penrith Independent Liberal Mark Davies is the new Mayor of Penrith. Elected by Penrith Council, Cr Davies takes over from Labor’s Greg Davies. Cr Davies defeated Independent Jackie Greenow with eight votes to seven.

Independent Liberal Ross Fowler was also elected as the new Deputy Mayor.

Cr Fowler defeated Labor’s Karen McKeown with nine votes to six.

Regentville PS Kindergarten Students: Flynn, Madelyn, Kayden, Isabella and Bryce

Regentville Rocks!

Regentville Public School recently held their annual ‘Regentville Rocks’ performance at the school. It was a celebration of the students’ talents in the performing arts, from Kindergarten to Year 6.

There were dance items performed by the students, the junior and senior choirs singing a repertoire of songs as well as the Regentville Public School band performing a number of popular songs during the morning tea break.

A packed house of family and friends were treated to watch a culmination of weeks of rehearsing for the teachers and students. A sausage sizzle stall on the day also raised valuable funds for the school.

Unbreakable I wonder what it would be like one morning to find that you had all the time in the world?

I wonder what would change in your life if you found out that you were ‘Unbreakable’ and therefore would live forever like the character Bruce Willis played in the movie so named?

Most of us find this concept almost impossible to fathom, because we’re reminded of our mortality daily. In fact some argue that it is our fear of death and our glaring mortality that drives our hopes, dreams and our ambitions in life. We aim to accomplish as much as we can before it’s too late, so as to leave our mark on the world so to speak. The implication of this mindset means that we are driven to find more time to accomplish things and time becomes our task master.

The irony of this thinking though is that in our chase for more time, we loose time with the most important people in our lives, our loved ones. This then leads to the classic problem that more time doing things means we have to spend less time with those we love. Sound familiar? When time drives us, we loose sight of the real things in life.

In the New Testament letter of 1 Thessalonians, it seems clear that the apostle Paul has a different view on time and therefore on life. He writes: ‘Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope’. (1 Thessalonians 4:13).

This is only a small verse, but it raises a very vital attitude that transforms lives. It’s the concept of hope within the timelessness of the God of creation. It raises the notion that those who believe

in Jesus need not fear death, for God has promised eternal life.

It also challenges our deeper needs, what we place our hope in and how we should live in view of it.

I wonder what it would be like one morning to find that you really had all the time in the world? I wonder what would change in your life if you found that you were truly ‘Unbreakable’.

Action for Glenmore Park Residents The Glenmore Park Residents Group, formerly Glenmore Park Action Group, would like to thank the Glenmore Park Gazette for giving us the opportunity so as we can update our local residents of what is happening within Glenmore Park. In the very near future GPRG will be opening up different social media outlets to share results from our monthly meetings and also links to Penrith Police and local council.

At the recent meeting for the Glenmore Park Action Group a unanimous decision was taken to change the name to Glenmore Park Residents Group. We were fortunate to have at the Meeting Superintendent Ben Feszczuk and Senior Constable Julie Graham. Superintendent Feszczuk addressed the meeting and it was pleasing to hear that Glenmore Park has only a small percentage of the crime rate in the Penrith Area. The major concern is malicious damage so we all need to keep our eyes and ears open and report any incident on 131444 to allow police to gather information of hot spots.

Members of the group have been looking at the long term problem of traffic in the area and trying to address the entry/ exit problems as well as the repair & maintenance of public property and bus shelters .

A TAFE group is currently working on a new webpage for the group and we hope to have that up and running by the end of the year just as soon as a new logo is finalised.

Social Justice Sunday On Sunday, 30 September, the Catholic Church throughout Australia celebrated Social Justice Sunday. This is an annual celebration which marks the launch of the Social Justice Statement which focuses each year on a different theme. In 2012 the focus of the statement is the family and the statement is titled The Gift of Family in Difficult Times. Last year’s statement was concerned with prisons and the justice system in Australia and was titled Building Bridges, Not Walls. This year’s statement examines the social and economic challenges faced by families, vulnerable families in society such as our indigenous, asylum seeker and refugee families, families living in poverty, the homeless and families with special needs. The Social Justice Statement ends with a consideration of the inspiration given to us of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. We ought to remember, of course, that the Holy Family knew what it was to have to flee their homeland through the threat of persecution and what it was to live in a nation under occupation and the constant looming spectre of famine, poverty and disease.

In summary, the Social Justice Statement for 2012 celebrates the vital role of family in our society and examines the pressures that threaten its stability. Work demands, living costs and forces of consumerism are some aspects of our society that impact on families. As Christians we are called to be supportive of all families, especially those in crisis and greatest need.

Pursuing justice is central to Christians as disciples of Jesus.

Jesus had no hesitation in supporting and showing love to those on the fringes of society, those who were regarded by others as outcasts because of their lifestyle, their gender, their religion or the fact that they suffered from a feared disease. Jesus did this not for any benefit for himself but for the benefit of those in need and a concern to help those rejected by society know that they were loved by God and were no less human because of their circumstances. A pursuit of justice stems from love – we pursue a more just society because we are called to love all people and be intolerant of circumstances which appear to indicate that God favours one group over another.

There are some issues which divide the Christian churches such as manner of governance and some points of theology but we can be certain that all those who call themselves disciples of Jesus are keen to work for a more just society because this

was a concern of Jesus himself. To call oneself a follower of Christ and yet turn a blind eye to the need of another, whatever it might be, is clearly wrong and a failure to answer the basic call of any Christian which is to manifest God’s love to all.

I trust you will find an opportunity to read through the Social Justice Statement for 2012 and have a think about ways in which you, your family or organisation can support families in our community which are the building blocks of a stable society. McCarthy College Offers Choices McCarthy Catholic College is dedicated to leading their students down the right path for a bright future. Whilst they run a very strong academic program, some students simply aren’t cut out for academia. That’s where the school’s Trade Training Centre comes to the fore.

The Trade Training Centre provides the most appropriate mix of trade training, academic education and personal development programs for students wishing to pursue a trade career. The Centre provides a flexible approach to learning that caters for individual learning needs including face-to-face classroom interaction, online lessons, tutorials and one to one interaction with teachers.

Currently in it’s third year, the federal government funded Trade Trading Centre is a consortium program involving four Catholic colleges in the region – McCarthy, St Columbus, Caroline Chisholm and Xavier.

The government aims to increase apprenticeship retention and provides funding for centres focusing on skills shortage areas. At present, 50% of apprenticeships fail in their first year.

The Trade Training Centre offers students the opportunity to begin a trade apprenticeship while remaining at school and completing the HSC, giving them better options for the future. Students entering Year 11 can opt for one of the seven trades on offer at the school: automotive; bricklaying/blocklaying; carpentry; electrotechnology; hospitality; hairdressing and engineering - metal fabrication.

Penrith City Council Recreation Manager Andrew Robinson said installing the equipment there was a plus for residents and would help families already using the centre to easily include exercise in their routines.

“The new outdoor fitness equipment will be especially handy for families,” Mr Robinson said.

“You can work on different types of exercise and meet other families while your kids play. I encourage residents to try it out.”

Stella Panaretos, podiatrist and director of Emu Plains Podiatry says the new clinic will help patients with their foot treatment needs.

“Often people try and put up with their pain and not seek treatment for years. Over time this can lead to serious problems and affect your quality of life,” Stella said.

“Patients with minor foot ailments tell me how much better they feel both physically and emotionally after some general podiatric skin and nail care. Qualified with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Podiatry) from the University of Western Sydney, Stella is a member of the Australian Podiatric Association and participates in professional programs to keep abreast of latest podiatric treatment practices. With an academic role at the University of Western Sydney, she is a clinical supervisor for undergraduate students in the podiatric medicine degree program.

For the Filling 1 cup caster sugar 6 eggs grated rind of 2 lemons 3/4 cup fresh lemon juice 3/4 cup double cream chocolate curls, for decorating

Method 1. Grease a 25cm flan tin. Sift the flour, cocoa, icing sugar and salt into a bowl. Set aside.

2. Melt butter and water in a saucepan over a low heat. Pour over the flour mixture and stir until the flour has absorbed all the liquid and the dough is smooth.

3. Press the dough evenly over the base and side of the prepared tin. Chill the pastry case.

4. Preheat oven to 190ºC / Gas 5, and place a baking sheet inside to heat up.

5. Prepare the filling. Whisk the sugar and eggs in a bowl until the sugar has dissolved. Add lemon rind and juice and mix well. Stir in the cream. Taste and add more lemon juice or sugar it needed, for a sweet taste or a touch of tartness.

6. Pour the filling into the chilled tart shell and place the tin on the hot baking sheet.

7. Bake for 25-30 mins or until the filling is set. Cool on a rack and decorate with chocolate curls.

Serve with vanilla choc chip icecream and enjoy!

PARENT’S CORNER Transitions A few years ago, at a Triple P group I was facilitating, were two Mums – good friends who lived near each other and had children the same age. They both had a question for me “why have our boys turned into ratbags?”. I checked their connection techniques, and their relationship building stuff like quality time, reading, mealtimes, bedtime, play. It all sounded great.

“Wait a second, how old are your kids?”

“Four and a half.”

“Both going to school next year?”

“Yes” “Doing school transition?”

“Yes” “You’re talking to them about being “big boys” and how great school will be, and how they need to learn to do lots of stuff to get ready for school?”

“Yes” “Are they really big boys? When they are in a crowd of people, adults and children, where everyone is standing, what can they see?”

“Other people’s butts.”

“Are they really going to be out there in the world alone, or are you going to help them along as much as you can?”

“Help them of course.”

“Then how honest are you being with them? How does it feel for your child to hear the messages you are giving them?”

Regardless of whether your child goes to preschool or long daycare, school is a big transition in the life of a child, a young child. Five years old is not big. And school is scary for some kids.

My youngest son was an angel until everyone - his parents, long daycare teachers, local shopkeepers, random people on the

street - started talking to him about going to school. He didn’t even have temper tantrums when he was two or three years old. But the fear and uncertainty about going to school tipped him over the edge. He would ask “Mum what are you going to do without me when I go to school?”. I knew his behaviour was related to fear. All mistaken behaviour is related to a fear of some kind when you peel away the layers.

Children have lots of transitions in their lives – preschool, school, moving house, new babies, blended families, holidays, birthdays. I see a lot of mistaken behaviour in my kids when there is a birthday. Good stress is still stress. Our children require us to be gently honest with them, to acknowledge their feelings, to see things from their perspective, and to offer whatever help and support they need to make a smooth transition. They still need boundaries and limits around their mistaken behaviour.

But we’re the big ones, and role modelling wisdom and kindness teaches kids how to be the same.

PET CHAT Cupcake Day We hosted the RSPCA Cupcake Day on Tuesday 18th September 2012.

Thank you to everyone who came in and donated and ate a cupcake or two or three. Also a huge thank you for the online donations. We raised $670.00 for the RSPCA with your help.

Belinda, Carly, Erin, Eden and Erica cooked up a storm and provided the most delicious peppermint slice, cupcakes, and rocky road. The Pupcakes were made from the RSPCA cupcake recipe, so that they were safe for pets to eat and enjoy.

It was nice to have people drop in (without their pets), have a cuppa, a cupcake and a chat. We love days like this where we can enjoy your company whilst raising money for the RSPCA. Thanks again for supporting a great cause!

The nurses monitor the patients whilst under general anaesthetic, operate the in house laboratory equipment, medicate animals whilst in hospital, answer enquiries, clean the hospital, and ensure the smooth running of the veterinary hospital.
