Planning Work Progresses On Mulgoa Road Upgrade Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith has announced that planning work on the Mulgoa Road upgrade at Penrith is progressing with Transport for NSW engaging SMEC Holdings to develop the next stages of the project.

Stuart Ayres said SMEC will carry out the concept design and site investigations, as well as develop a Review of Environmental Factors, for a 3.6 kilometre section of Mulgoa Road.

“Mulgoa Road is an important arterial road connecting Penrith to the Sydney CBD and other parts of greater Sydney, via the M4 Motorway,” Stuart Ayres said.

“With population and employment growth in the local area, it is important that we begin planning for this important upgrade now.

“The proposed upgrade will increase Mulgoa Road from two lanes to three lanes in both directions to ease congestion and support future growth.

“This project, along with other road upgrades will improve travel times and traffic flow between Glenmore Parkway and Museum Drive.

“Whilst this project will be disruptive we all know Mulgoa Road needs to be widened.”

The upgrade will also improve connectivity between bus and rail services, as well as deliver benefits for pedestrians, cyclists, and less mobile people, with improved accessibility and amenities.

This upgrade is part of a 6.5 kilometre corridor upgrade to Mulgoa Road/Castlereagh Road between Glenmore Parkway at Glenmore Park and Andrews Road at Penrith.

I got a call from someone saying they were from the Tax Commissioner and that a warrant had been put out for my arrest.

Apparently, my identity had been used for criminal activity and they needed to question me. What should I do? I felt threatened that I had done something wrong!

Did you pick it? Yes, it was clearly a scam. After figuring this out, I felt angry that others might not realise it was a scam and get caught up in it. There was little I could do to stop that. Then my anger was directed to the person on the other end of the phone.

After asking my name, I asked them if they knew there was a pandemic taking place. Surely during a pandemic people would be wanting to do something useful for others each day? Sadly, no. I asked if they had considered doing something useful instead of stealing people’s money. The line went dead.

Was the person on the other end of the line deeply evil? Were they just doing a job to get some money? Would they otherwise be in poverty if they weren’t scamming money from Australians? Would I do the same thing if I were that desperate? While I was angry, I also saw that in a different set of circumstances I might feel pressured into acting in such a despicable way. It reminded me that as a Christian, I don’t think of myself as better than anyone, just someone who has been forgiven by Jesus.

What if we Live in a Benevolent Universe?

Somehow, we can find it easier to believe that everything is against us rather than for us. Along these lines, it is easier to believe that we need to prove ourselves rather than accept that we are loved no matter what.

At the supermarket checkout recently, the wrong price came up for the apples I was purchasing. After confirming this, the manager gave me the apples for free! Awesome. But this sort of goodness or benevolence feels too good to be true because it runs against the way we see the world.

It seems natural, if we believe God exists, to believe that he is distant and somehow set on catching us flaunting the rules like a grizzly policeman or a grumpy boss. We must be good to win His favour, and if we are not good enough God and the universe works against us.

Looking at it this way, COVID might be seen as punishment. And with this idea of God and the universe, we are left feeling hopeless! Our souls sink with the thought that we are on our own amidst the bad stuff in life.

But what if God isn’t like that at all? What if God is loving, compassionate and kind? What if I told you that God specifically loves you and your family, and desires your wellbeing? What if God’s universe is a benevolent place created for good, and for us to thrive?

I’m not sure if you know it, but this is exactly the way the Bible describes God. The Bible says God loves the world, He is for us and with us. He wants a relationship with us and would be like a delighted dad watching his kid if we were doing well.

I invite you in the craziness of this COVID time to look at things through this new lens of a loving God and a benevolent universe, and to find rest in your soul.

Glenmore Park Ready to Hit the Court

It’s been over six months since the last tip off and now the wait is over for the Glenmore Park Basketball Club, who are all ready to go and hit the court for the 2020 – 2021 Summer season, beginning this month.

The local club played their last games in March this year before the season was cancelled due to the current pandemic.

Since then, there has been a huge growth in player registrations for the upcoming competition, thanks to the worldwide increase in popularity of basketball.

“We have experienced growth in the club this year. There are approximately 130-140 boys and 50-60 girls registered for the 2020 – 2021 Summer season, which is amazing” said Brett Claxton, President of Glenmore Park Basketball Club to the Glenmore Gazette.

There will be 19 boys’ teams this season, compared to 12 previously, and 9 girls’ teams. The Under 14 boys’ teams have doubled, increasing from 3 to 6-8 teams.

“There’s certainly a popularity boom in basketball right now, thanks to the NBA and the Michael Jordan – Last Dance documentary on Netflix. This shows in the number of boys wanting to play basketball for our club right now” explained Brett.

If you would like to become a part of the club, they are still looking for players, coaches, managers, and anyone wanting to come on board for Season 2020 – 2021. There are currently no Under 10 girls’ teams and they hope to fill them shortly.

“As a club, we are looking forward to actually getting back on the court once again. There’s been several months break away from the game and everyone can’t wait to play again. We’ve been training at Penrith PCYC in preparation for the new season. It’s great to see the kids running around on the court and staying active” Brett replied.

Small lifestyle changes, combined with simple self-care practises, can have a profound effect on our physical and mental health as well as help to develop greater resilience.

Thanks to funding from Wentworth Healthcare, provider of the Nepean Blue Mountains Primary Health Network, a 4-week digital health and wellbeing program which focuses on selfcare is being offered to 320 residents in Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury, Lithgow and Penrith regions free of charge. The program is being implemented by PA2Health with funding made possible by the Australian Government’s ‘Empowering our Communities’ initiative.

The program uses SMS and simple chat-bot technology to gently encourage participants to improve their lifestyle by making small weekly changes in diet, activity and how they approach their health. Daily guidance in stress and sleep management can also help those suffering from stress and anxiety. The team of experts who designed the program are accessible through the chat-bot and a private Facebook group.

PA2health is a small organisation with a vision to provide motivation and support to regional Australians whilst helping people improve their physical and mental health.

Its founders include Ginny Stevens; Active Farmers, Food Coach and author; Judy Davie, Psychologist; Alice Williams and Mindfulness Coach; Narelle Hunter. The organisation was founded in March 2019 and the team were finalists in the Regional Pitchfest competition held in Wagga last September.

“We’re delighted to offer this program to the people in this region” says Judy Davie.

“We have run similar programs in drought and bushfire affected areas in SE NSW and Murrumbidgee with great success. The program seems to give people permission to help themselves for a change. People soon realise how much more they can do for others when they care for themselves first”.

Judy emphasises that the 4-week program does not focus on weight loss or becoming super-fit, it is about simple lifestyle changes and stress management. “It aims to help people experience for themselves that small, available changes towards self-care is the first step towards personal regeneration” said Judy The program is available to the first 320 people who sign up and starts on 12th October. GARAGE SALE Some parents tell their children that strong emotions such as anger, frustration, and excitement are unacceptable.

Strong emotions are OK. They are normal and all of us will feel them at some time in the day or week. Strong emotions are quite motivating and energising. Think about how much can get done when people get angry (for example, Vincent Lingiari, Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela).

So, all feelings are OK, but it is what we do with our emotions that matters. It is not OK to hurt someone else’s feelings or physically hurt others when we are angry.

It is also not OK to blame someone else for how we feel, for example “you make me feel angry”. You are having the emotion and taking responsible for how you feel gives you the power to change it. Blame is a dead-end street – it stops you from feeling that you can take the initiative to make changes.

The components of emotional regulation include (for children aged over 4 years): • Acknowledging where you are at – Feel it to heal it.

• Labelling your feelings – Name it to tame it.

• Doing something to calm down – Deep breathing, counting backwards, telling yourself to ‘calm down’, thinking happy thoughts.

• When you are calm, understanding what was going on for you.

When the child is calm and ready to talk, calmly discuss the behaviours you observed and what was said. Ask the child what might have sparked the outburst.

What was s/he feeling? Google ‘feelings chart’ and ‘anger iceberg’ for some cool visuals.

And finally, what could the child do better next time when s/ he is having big feelings? All disruptions are opportunities for repair and learning.

Parenting is an opportunity to coach a child in ways that make them better humans. As parents, we also have to role model the skills we want our children to learn, so emotional regulation starts with us. r

Grandparents are the smiling faces that light up their grandkid’s worlds and they are the helping hand for parents. Now it’s time to say a big thank you by nominating a Local Grandparent of the Year in Mulgoa.

Tanya Davies MP said the Local Grandparent of the Year Awards are a highlight of Grandparents Day which is being held this year on Sunday, 25 October.

“There’s no denying it’s been a tough year for our grandparents with COVID-19 requiring self-isolation more than the rest of the community to keep safe,” Mrs Davies said.

“That means Grandparents haven’t been able to see their family members as much.”

“Grandparents Day is the perfect opportunity to show grandparents just

how much they are loved and appreciated.”

Grandparents, grand-friends, kin and those who take on the role of a grandparent in their family or community are celebrated for their contributions on Grandparents Day. Acting Minister for Seniors Geoff Lee said grandparents are often the glue which holds families together.

“Grandparents Day is the perfect time to shine a spotlight on these special people and give them the recognition they deserve.”

Local Ladies Unsung Heroes Glenmore Park group, Taste of Everything, have been a shining light during the pandemic for many residents of local aged care facility SummitCare Penrith, kindly donating handmade knitted items and gifts.

The group have handmade bed socks, fingerless gloves, scarves, sensory tablecloths as well as small bags for ladies. For Father’s Day, they made gift bags which included socks, chocolate, puzzle books and pencils for the men.

“Taste of Everything applied to Penrith City Council for a CAP (Community Assistance Program) grant this year. The group applied so that we could assist a local organisation with items that would make their lives better. The CAP grant was for a maximum of $1,200, which we received to make the knitted items and gifts for SummitCare Penrith” said Linsey Hall, member of Taste of Everything.

Last year, the group were also successful in receiving a CAP grant, which they used for Fernhill School. They look for an organisation within the local area that would benefit from help or is recommended to them from NCNS (Nepean Community Neighbourhood Services).

Their next project will be to present the residents of the aged care facility with gift bags for Christmas. They are currently decorating the bags and are deciding on what items to include.

“Due to COVID, we haven’t been inside the residences at all and our meetings have been at the front of the administration building. What we have found is that the staff are so happy with our involvement. Hopefully, we may be able meet the residents in the future” explained Linsey.

2. Plan

Decide what your online event looks like. Will it be a virtual bake-off, a knock, drop and dash in exchange for a donation – take baking orders from your friends, family or work colleagues and deliver them straight to their doorstep! You could even host an online baking quiz, Masterchef trivia anyone?

3. Party

Party up with your friends and family over a virtual cuppa, enjoy your favourite sweet and savoury treats and share your favourite recipes with your guests. Play some virtual games and fundraise from home. Don’t forget to hang up your bunting and most importantly tell everyone about all the animals they’re helping!

What are Good Food Sources of Zinc for my Joint Cartilage?

Zinc has outstanding global public health importance. Last month, we showed zinc’s virtues for knee and other cartilage. We saw that zinc activates > 300 bodily enzymes, that it’s used in > 3000 different humanproteins representing 10% of all body proteins. So, it’s IMPORTANT!!

Australia’s government recommends a daily zinc intake from food (RDA) of 14mg (men), 8mg (women), 11 and 12mg during pregnancy and lactation. Other countries recommend even higher intake levels. Many Australian men (37%) and women (9%) have inadequate zinc intakes. For males 71 years and older, 66% get inadequate zinc, as do 82% of pregnant women worldwide.

Zinc is particularly important for pregnant women, who are vulnerable due to additional zinc demands associated with pregnancy and fetal development. Vegetarians generally get less zinc and are vulnerable to deficiency.

Modern diet/lifestyles make getting enough zinc difficult (more next month). So that you get an idea of foods to eat regularly to improve zinc nutriture, I’ve listed zinc content (per

100g) for common foods below. Obviously, plant foods are poorer sources. In order of zinc content, fruits < vegetables < legumes < nuts ≈ ground spices ≈ fish/animal products < liver < oysters. All foods are uncooked.

• Fruits: oranges 0.06mg >pawpaw 0.3mg • Vegetables: tomatoes 0.12mg > garlic 1.0mg • Legumes: kidney-bean 1.0mg >soya-flour 4.1mg • Grains: wheat 0.84mg (white) 1.3mg (w/meal); rice 1.2mg (white) 1.7mg, (brown) > 5.96mg wild-rice • Ground spices (dried): paprika 4.33mg > cocoa 7.5mg (coffee contains just 0.01mg) • Nuts/Seeds (dried): hazelnuts 2.2mg; > pumpkin-seeds 7.46mg; • Fish: salmon 0.42mg > sardines 3.1mg; • Animal products: parmesan cheese 6.5mg; beef 3.91-8.2mg; lamb 8.72-10.0mg; veal liver; 12.0mg; • Oysters: 11 -91mg; A more detailed list is available in the web version of this article at www.districtgazette.com.au.

It’s easy to see why the elderly who tend to eat less, and those vegans/vegetarians, or pregnant/nursing mothers who don’t plan meal composition well, risk zinc deficiency. The same holds true for non-vegetarians who eat poorly. You can supplement, but this has its own issues. Eating good food is the best way of getting your zinc. Station Locations for Western Sydney’s New Metro The station locations for the new Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport project to service Greater Western Sydney and the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) airport have been revealed, with the project also set to deliver a multi-billion dollar boost to the New South Wales and Australian economies.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian, Minister for Transport Andrew Constance and Minister for Western Sydney Stuart Ayres recently inspected the site of the future Western Sydney Aerotropolis Station.

“The Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport project will support 14,000 jobs, including 250 apprentices and inject billions of dollars to the NSW and Australian economies” Ms Berejiklian said.

“Where we are standing will become a major new transport interchange, right in the heart of the future central business district for the Western Parkland City”.

Federal Minister for Population, Cities and Urban Infrastructure Alan Tudge said construction would start this year on the around $11 billion mega-project that would deliver economic support and local jobs.

“This city-shaping investment is being fast-tracked to help our economy recover from COVID-19 and deliver a major stimulus right in the heart of Western Sydney” Mr Tudge said.

“Western Sydney residents will reap the benefits of this investment well before the first train leaves the station”.

Exact station locations have now also been confirmed on the 23-kilometre driverless railway line at St Marys, Orchard Hills, Luddenham and two stations at the airport.

Supporting the airport and Aerotropolis is a key part of the Western Sydney City Deal – a 20-year agreement signed in March 2018 by the Australian Government, NSW Government and eight Western Sydney councils. r
