Stephen Cycling His Way To The Top Glenmore Park’s Stephen Cuff is already stamping his name in Australian cycling and setting the sport on fire, all at the age of just 15. Stephen recently won the Woolworths Scholarship Award for the second year in a row, as well as being awarded the Penrith Valley Sports Star (Rising Star) Award.

The New South Wales Representative’s race results within the past year have been outstanding. He certainly raised the bar high last year and managed to excel again this year with 8 National Medals and 9 State Medals. The highlight for Stephen this year was winning a Gold Medal at the Australian National Road Championships in the Criterium and a Bronze Medal in the Time Trial, whilst representing NSW in Bendigo recently.

Adding to Stephen’s already impressive medal haul, was a win in both the Penrith Club Championship 95K (overall winner) and the Blayney to Bathurst Road Race 70K (overall winner). Both races had never before been won by a 15 year old and Stephen was the first person to achieve this.

He has also been selected to train with Brad Magee in the New South Wales High Performance Squad. “It has been five years of smart training that has got Stephen to the level that he is at and most of all, he just loves to ride” said Julian Cuff, Stephen’s Father.

Stephen’s next goal is to compete for Australia at the Junior World Championships on the velodrome. For any young athletes wanting to compete in cycling, Stephen has this advice; “Firstly, make sure you enjoy it because it only gets harder down the track. Lang Brothers Have Running In Their Blood Brothers Zane and Noah Lang, from Glenmore Park, are proving that running is certainly in their blood, with the Jamison Little Athletics Centre’s athletes staking their claims as being amongst the best runners for their age in the local area.

Zane, 11 and Noah, aged 9, have both represented Zone and Sydney West for school athletics this year. Zane and Noah placed first in their age groups in the 800m at Zone, whilst Zane placed 5th and Noah, 3rd in the Sydney West Championships recently. Noah’s 3rd placing means that he will represent the State later this month in the 800m event.

The brothers also competed at State Level for Cross Country in August, with Zane placing 25th and Noah, 21st overall at the event.

Zane and Noah train at Blue Hills Oval in Glenmore Park under the watchful eye of their Dad, who is also their Coach. The boys do sprint training twice a week and one four kilometre run on the weekend while competing for Jamison Little Athletics Centre on Friday nights, making it a very busy week of running.

With their favourite events being 400m, 800m, 1500m and long jump, competing well in athletics means that Zane and Noah’s goals this year are within sight. “I want to break 5 minutes in the 1500m. My current PB is 5:09� said Zane, whilst Noah said “I want to make it to State level and hopefully get a State medal�.

The gifted athletes also compete in other sports throughout the year, with Zane playing Rugby League and OzTag and Noah playing representative Soccer for Nepean FC. What Does Faith Look Like?

What is faith? What does faith look like? Often people think that faith, especially faith in God, is “blind faith.” Like a leap in the dark. Like taking a risk and not being sure how things will work out. Others talk about “keeping the faith” or that you’ve just got to “have faith.”

It’s as if they’re saying, keep your confidence; keep your belief; but belief in who? Belief in what?

Quite often, it’s just the power of positive thinking or a faith in your own ability to persevere. Sometimes it’s just hoping that if you believe something strongly enough then maybe things might work out.

How different this is to faith as it is explained in the Bible!

The Bible says “faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” Faith is never faith in our own confidence nor is it blind faith, a fingers crossed, leap in the dark.

Biblical faith is being sure and confident in God. Even though we cannot see God, the Bible makes clear that you can confidently put your faith and trust in God because God has made promises and he has been faithful in keeping those promises.

Ultimately, the Bible says, our faith should be centred on Jesus.

When you look at Jesus’ life, he was perfectly trustworthy, always working for our good and never for our harm.

'()* ((+ ,,+ Roaring Success For Lions AFL Club Emu Plains Glenmore Park Lions AFL Club recently completed a successful 2016 Season, with the local club achieving many goals and continuing as one of the biggest and strongest in Western Sydney.

The club had an outstanding number of players this year, with 200 juniors and a massive 73 Auskick members (children aged from 5-9 years). There were 11 competition teams between the ages of 10 and 17 and also an under 15s Girls team, who proved highly successful. 6 of the club’s 11 teams made semi-final rounds in 2016, with 3 teams going on to represent and win in grand finals.

During 2016, they were the first junior club in Western Sydney to be awarded the status of ‘AFL Quality Club’. This award was based on the assessment completed by the AFL that demonstrated that the club had met various benchmarks to qualify for quality status.

Another highlight this season was the selection of 28 of their players across a range of age groups selected for the Western Sydney Development and Representative teams.

The recent success of the GWS Giants making the 2016 AFL Finals has also helped the club. “The success of the Giants means that young people are hearing more about AFL in Western Sydney and are considering the fact the we now have a local team that everyone can aspire to play in one day. It provides living examples to our young players of resilience, perseverance, determination and strength� said Brenda Quayle, Emu Plains Glenmore Park Lions AFL Club Committee Member.

Registration for the 2017 Season is now open. Any players who register before the 4th December, will have exclusive access to the ‘Lions Den’, with registrations including players receiving a personalised training singlet (name and number) and bag or training ball. Soul Matters: What Car Dings Tell Us About Ourselves As Jen went to jump into her little car at the Town Centre with an armful of groceries, the wind caught her door. It swung open, just nudging against the side panel of an SUV in the next parking spot. I gathered from the ensuing conversation that the damage was hard to detect – a good polish of the duco would remove it completely. The owner of the SUV was furious, declaring Jen was “careless” and demanding her phone number to ensure she cover every cent of the cost! This preoccupation with things that our prosperity seems to have given birth to shows an inner thinness, and when it expressed itself here, Jen was left shaken and teary.

To another story: Tanya was running the gauntlet at the round-about on the Northern Road with her two young children. As you know it’s “dog-eat-dog”, no quarter given. Cars from all directions come at you mercilessly in the push to go faster. A P-plater stalled. Tanya swerved slightly to miss the flustered student, clipping the bumper of another car.

Both pulled over. The damage was minor but a clear ding nonetheless to a nice car. Tanya braced for the blast from the other driver. He surveyed the damage, observed Tanya’s kids were crying, and said kindly: “Hey, don’t worry about it – its only metal and rubber. Good thing we’re all okay.” This bloke’s generosity spoke volumes about the freedom and goodness in his soul.

His response shows us how Jesus would treat us when we fail, and the nobility of soul we develop when we truly follow him.

Car dings tell us a lot about ourselves, and what is revealed about our souls has everything to do with shaping Glenmore Park as a community. This is important because it is here that we seek to raise our kids and to find peace and happiness.

2016 Mulgoa Aboriginal Student Of The Year Announced

Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP, recently recognised the achievements of local Glenmore Park High School student, Ms Shani Lee Bolt, by presenting her with the 2016 Mulgoa Aboriginal Student of the Year award.

“The Local Aboriginal Student of the Year award recognizes young people who demonstrate notable leadership skills, qualities and attributes, both within their school and throughout their local community,” Tanya Davies said.

Shani Lee Bolt was nominated by her principal, Ms Lisette Gorrick, who highlighted Ms Bolt’s positive, responsible and mature qualities, in enabling her to engage in various mentoring, collaboration and conflict resolution programs and activities, over the course of her studies.

“As a Gamarada Leader, Shani works closely and intricately with

the Aboriginal Education Group at Glenmore Park High School, in order to develop initiatives for Indigenous youth, allowing her to promote the integration and respect of all cultures and people,” said Tanya Davies.

Ms Bolt also represents Glenmore Park High School at the Schools Spectacular and the Aboriginal dance ensemble, as well as participating in Penrith Regional Koori Health, peer support and high school transition programs, along with working with NAIDOC, Close the Gap and engaging in Sorry Day. “It is this determined striving to ensure that Indigenous students are able to reach and ascertain their full potential that makes Shani an exceptional leader and, as such, a worthy recipient of this prestigious award,” Tanya Davies said.

“I am immensely proud to have a young woman, such as Shani, residing within my electorate. Continuing Our Series on Parent Traps…

Guest Article by Professor Matt Sanders It’s tough being a parent but it’s easy to fall into one of the common parenting traps.

The criticism trap is when there are frequent power struggles with your child. The situations escalate from criticising to threatening and yelling. This type of discipline often backfires.

The parent’s anger makes the child and parent resentful and hostile. If these kinds of battles take place frequently, its time to try a new way of handling the situation.

The “leave them alone” trap involves the parent simply not acknowledging their child when they are behaving well. If good behaviour is taken for granted it may be replaced with the misbehaviour that receives more attention. A basic principle of positive parenting is to praise behaviours you would like to see more often.

The “for the sake of the children” trap occurs when parents in unhappy marriages stick doggedly to the same marriage routines, for the sake of the children, rather than addressing the problems constructively.

The perfect parent trap. There is no such thing as a perfect parent and trying to be one will only lead to disappointment, resentment, guilt, and feelings of inadequacy.

The martyr trap is one where parents become so overinvolved in the task of parenting they neglect their own needs.

The parents’ relationship suffers and may end in feelings of dissatisfaction and resentment. Quality parenting can only happen when adults have their own lives in balance.

Parenting is sometimes hard work and it may take time to tackle difficult problems. The good news is that help is always at hand. In Penrith, parenting support is offered for free with Triple P, one of the world’s most highly-regarded parenting programs.

What is it with neighbours needing to turn their house into a concert hall at all hours of the day and night? What type of a person does not understand or realise that other people who live around them don’t want the sound of a subwoofer spilling loud powerful low frequency noise into their house hold?

If you have an unreasonable neighbour who even after talking to them, persist on causing a problem like this, they need to understand that this is defined as ‘offensive noise’ and cannot be made at any time of the day.

The laws that give a time frame of when the racket needs to stop is only for ‘reasonable noise’.This type of behaviour in our community should not be allowed.

I would advise you to contact Penrith Council to put through a Neighbourhood Dispute and Grievances form. If this does not work and the ‘offensive noise’ does continue, a Noise Abatement Order can be issued. This can be organised by the registry staff at the local court and the court order will need your neighbour to comply, otherwise it will be recognised as a criminal offence and fines may be imposed. The Ultimate Training Experience Burns Outdoor Obstacle Training, located in Bringelly, is the ultimate training experience for adults and children of any fitness level that is challenging, unique and fun.

The business recently celebrated their first year anniversary late last month, after taking a total of nine months to be built. The activities that the facility offers include obstacle training for beginners (lessons in this class), kid’s obstacle training where all children aged 6+ are taken through the lesson on obstacles, boot camps for adults and teenagers, practice sessions for those experienced, family training sessions and school holidays for children.

Burns Outdoor Obstacle Training also host birthday parties, charity events, sports team bonding sessions, and corporate functions. The costs are $30 per person for an adult’s obstacle training technique training session which is three hours and $20 for those who do not require the lesson, $20 per person for the children’s obstacle training session which is two hours and $12 for boot camps which are a one-hour class.

When it comes to conquering the obstacles, Owners Wayne and Lorelai Burns have this advice; “Most obstacles require some practise with technique specific to each one. There are often a few different methods to completing an obstacle, often it’s about learning the different methods and seeing what you personally feel more comfortable with” said Lorelai.

Wayne and Lorelai are both passionate about fitness and staying healthy; “We want to get more children and adults active. We want people to see that fitness can be fun and does not need to be a chore. We want to see more people come here and realise that these activities are what we often did as children and then were considered play. We would also like people to gain not only strength and fitness from attending here but also feel like they are part of a friendly community that is both inspiring and encouraging of one another” they explained.

How Can I Be Making A Profit When There Is No Money In The Bank?

Perhaps the number one question that business owners ask their Accountants, particularly as we emerge out of an economic downturn. This month I tackle two different theories of thought on why we get the same question over and over again.

Many Business Owners run their business on what I refer to as Bank Account Theory; whereas I would tell business owners they need to run on what I refer to as Financial Statement Theory.

Bank Account Theory is simply the following: “if I have money in the bank, I assume there is profit on the books. No money in the bank then there must be a loss on the books”. As a business owner you understand that bank account balance is important.

Cash flow needed to run your business is very important as you rely on cash to run your business on a day-to-day basis. But, this is just one aspect of running your business and cannot be the only aspect.

So Why Do I Have Profit On The Books And No Money In The Bank?

Now that we understand Bank Account Theory, let’s explore what happens when a downturn occurs in the economy. In a downturn, many Business Owners are caught by surprise with a dramatic decline in business and revenues. No Business Owner wants to close the doors of their business because revenues are not keeping up with the expenses needed to get by. They often, resort to credit cards and lines of credits to run their business, which is fine at first glance, however, after the business starts to recover from the downturn the credit lines are still there and the debt is still there. At some point in the business cycle, it will need to start paying back those loans. This is where the entire question becomes the answer.

credit to pay for expenses should have been captured as expenses on your financial statements in the year you made the expenses. When you pay back those loans you are NOT receiving an expense benefit on your financial statements or income tax returns. Therefore money that is used to pay for loans is NOT an expense.

So How Does This Work?

Let’s say in 2013 there is a decrease in sales due to a downturn in the economy resulting is a loss of 22,000, against which the owner takes out loans. At the beginning of 2014 the owner has a debt of 25,000 to pay back.

In 2014 there is an upturn in sales as consumer confidence picked up so the owner decides to aggressively pay back the loan with the 12,000 profit that has been made, using Financial Statement Theory, leaving a balance of 13,000 (for simplicity I assume no interest). The payment of 12,000 went to pay back loans that technically is not an expense even though it reduced the bank balance.

Where The Problem Comes For Business Owners!

2014 will be profitable but there is no money in the bank because you are repaying debt. The business saw the benefits of those loans in the 2013 financial year when all the expense were written off. In 2014 the business will see no benefits of their loan repayment (assuming no capturing of previous years losses).

In 2013 the business experienced tough times, and in 2014 and most of 2015 and perhaps beyond times will be tough because you need to recoup those loans that were taken out in 2013. THIS IS NOT A QUICK FIX. As a Small Business Owner you need to have patience when it comes to paying back the loans and returning profitable financial statements to a surplus bank balance.

Damfest Has Arrived!

It’s that time of year, when Warragamba comes alive with Damfest on Sunday the 16th of October. Roads and Maritime Services advises motorists of changed traffic conditions on Mulgoa Road between Wolseley Street and Willoring Crescent at Jamisontown.

Essential maintenance work to improve motorists’ safety will be carried out including road surfacing work litter collection and vegetation removal.

To reduce the impact on motorists, work will be carried out until Sunday 23 October between 8pm and 5am and take six shifts to complete, weather permitting.

There will be some noise associated with this work but every effort will be made to minimise its impact.

To ensure the safety of workers and motorists, some lane closures may in place and road users are advised to allow extra travel time, follow the direction of traffic control and keep to reduced speed limits where in place.

Witches, Monsters and Halloween Safety

WHAT’S COOKING

Witch’s Hat Cookies

Medium • Time 40 min • Makes 12 Ingredients • 2/3 Cup Plain Flour • 1/4 Cup Firmly Packed Brown Sugar • 2 Tbsp Cocoa Powder • 60g Butter, Chopped • 1 Egg Yolk • 375g Packet Milk Chocolate Melts, Melted • 12 Mini Ice-Cream Cones • 1/3 Cup M&Ms Minis

Method

1. Process flour, sugar, cocoa and butter until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add egg yolk. Process until dough just comes together, adding 2 teaspoons of cold water if necessary. Turn pastry onto a lightly floured surface. Knead until just smooth. Shape into a disc.

Cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.

2. Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced. Line 2 baking trays with baking paper. Roll out pastry between 2 sheets of baking paper until 5mm thick. Using a 5.5cm cutter, cut 12 rounds from dough. Place rounds, 3cm apart, on prepared trays. Refrigerate for 10 minutes.

3. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until light golden. Cool on trays for 5 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

4. Line a tray with baking paper. Using a small pastry brush, spread a little melted chocolate onto the top of 1 biscuit. Working quickly, dip the outside of 1 cone into chocolate, turning to coat all over. Stick the cone onto the biscuit. Place onto prepared tray. Working quickly, decorate cone with M&Ms. Repeat with remaining biscuits, melted chocolate, ice-cream cones and M&Ms. Refrigerate for 20 minutes or until set. Tie ribbon around base of each hat. On November 1st they celebrated the end of summer. They thought ghosts visited the living on October 31st. They dressed up like ghosts so the spirits would not harm them. Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. On Halloween, to keep ghosts away from their houses, people would place bowls of food outside their homes to appease the ghosts and prevent them from attempting to enter.

Whether you are attending a local event to celebrate, having a party at home or with family and friends or simply taking your kid’s out for some trick or treating there are some great tips and idea’s on things you can do to get you in the Halloween spirit, but most of all this is also a time to be diligent and practise safety for all involved. Be mindful and respectful that not all people in Australia have taken on this ever growing tradition, here are some tips to make it a fun, safe and enjoyable time for everyone.  For those at home celebrating, decorate your front door with a pumpkin or a lantern to show you are participating, this lets trick or treaters know they are welcome.  Teach kids to demonstrate manners when taking treats, and to only take wrapped lollies and enough for themselves.  Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colours and make sure it the right size to prevent trips and falls.  Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision.  Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.  Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighbourhoods. Boron â&#x20AC;&#x201C; The Little Known Mineral For Osteoporosis OK so let's have a look at an important mineral that is often overlooked when it comes to bone density and osteoporosis, (as well as osteoarthritis) namely â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;boronâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

1 in 3 women over 50 have osteoporosis compared to 1 in 5 men. Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 6 reasons why boron is important for both men & women with osteoporosis?

In women osteoporosis is attributed to reduced estrogen levels (roughly Âź of that in young women) after menopause.

In postmenopausal women boron supplementation has been shown to markedly elevate serum estrogen & testosterone, even more when dietary magnesium is low. Estrogen is actually an anti-inflammatory hormone; this action helps suppress bone resorbing cells!!

In men osteoporosis is associated with low free â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;testosteroneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Osteoporosis is actually an inflammatory disease, a fact that is not much publicised in the popular media, so boron helps to slow this key driver. Finally, boron helps significantly increase production of many vital proteins that build both bone & cartilage The best sources of boron are plant foods. Boron needs to be in the soil for plants to pick it up. Boron content in Australian soils is variable. Mallee soils have a very high content, but soils within the eastern-state sandstone and granite belt have little.

Food boron is easily absorbed but also readily excreted so you need a constant supply. So what foods contain this great bone

building nutrient?

The best food sources are avocados; followed by nuts and dried fruits e.g. prunes, raisins, dates, almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts and beans; while apples, peaches pears, grapes and broccoli, & plant derived fermented beverages i.e. wine cider & beers are also reasonable boron sources. The foods we often eat the most of, i.e. grains, dairy products, seafood & meats contain very little boron.

National Veterinary Nurseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day On Friday 14th October 2016 we plan to celebrate National Veterinary Nurseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital.

It is great to acknowledge the hard work and efforts of our veterinary nurses. The nurses do a lot of work behind the scenes that you do not see or hear about. The nurses monitor the patients whilst under general anaesthetic, medicate animals whilst in hospital, answer enquiries, clean the hospital, and ensure the smooth running of the veterinary hospital. Without the veterinary nurses, we would not be able to do our job as a veterinarian.

We plan to celebrate by having a long lunch with enough food to feed an army.

We have 7 nurses at the hospital with Sheridan recently on maternity leave, and I hope you get to know them as you come and visit our hospital.

Kirsti Lane After 20 years of veterinary nursing, Kirsti went back to TAFE to update her qualifications. Kirsti graduated from Veterinary Nursing Certificate IV (again) in June 2016. Kirsti enjoyed the study and found that the basics had not changed, but technology had certainly advanced.

Kirsti enjoys spending her time off with her daughter and husband (and her animals of course) camping, bushwalking and trying to keep fit! They have 3 dogs (Roxy, Rory and Crumbs), 2 cats (Ivory Grace and William Wallace), 3 fish, 2 birds and several hermit crabs!

Kristie Borg Kristie joined our team in April 2013. She has completed studies in certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing in 2011. Kristie is currently studying a Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (General Practice) through Crampton Consulting Group.

Kristie's furry family includes: four dogs (including Myloh the Jack Russell, Pepi the Chihuahua and Reilly and Coco the Maltese Terriers), one medium haired cat named Missy, three birds (Mac, Peaches and Budgie), and four horses (Jordie, Lexie, Minnie and Bella). Stacey Johnston Stacey has grown up in the Lower Blue Mountains area and in 2001 began her Veterinary Nursing career working at local veterinary clinics and gaining her Certificate IV Veterinary Nurse qualification at Richmond TAFE. Stacey has 4 cats running around her feet, Sage (an elderly black cat), Mia (a feisty tortie), Bricky (named after being found on a construction site at just one week old and just couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t part with after hand rearing!) and Boots (one adorable and cuddly medium haired ginger kitty).

Lizzie Bunting Lizzie completed the Veterinary Nursing Certificate IV in July 2016.

Lizzie is currently studying the Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services at the Delta Institute, which is an animal behaviour and training course.

Lizzie began teaching the Puppy Preschool at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in Dec 2015. Lizzie is enjoying the study and the hands on experience with Puppy Preschool.

Lizzie has had many animals during her life time, at the moment she has 3 cats (Moo Cow, Missy and Donut), and a Labrador cross (Sonny).

Jessica Hollman Jessica completed TAFE work experience with us and joined our team in Jan 2015 as a kennel hand.

Jessica completed the Veterinary Nursing Certificate IV in July 2016.

Jessica has had many different kinds of animals in her lifetime currently owning her river turtle Sheldon, a blue tongue Olly, her cockatiel Toggle, many different fish and a Norwegian Elkhound named Tahoe.

Jessica loves working at Orchard Hills and is looking forward to working towards her dream job as a veterinarian.
