Songs of Encouragement It is natural to be saddened by bad news. Perhaps it could be news about serious illness or the loss of our job, a relationship breakdown, or even death itself. Yet, is it possible to stand firm in the face of this news?

Look at these strengthening, encouraging words from the Bible’s book of Psalms.

In Psalm 16, the writer, David, facing great uncertainty, is able to say; “I said to the Lord, ‘You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing...I shall not be shaken... my heart is glad; my body...will rest secure because you will not abandon me to the grave...you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.’”

Despite the uncertain circumstances in his life, David, because he knows that apart from God, he has nothing of eternal value, he will not be shaken.

In fact, David is able to experience peace and calm. He has a quiet inner joy, the confident joy of knowing that no matter what happens, God will never abandon him.

Even in death, God will be with David because God will take him to be at home with him where David will experience eternal joy in God’s presence.

Sometimes we can be so weighed down by disappointment that we might feel as if all hope is gone.

On Sundays at Glenmore Park Anglican Church in October we will be spending some time looking at the Psalms. We will see that the Psalms are not just words on a page, but in fact they are important truths which you can live by, truths, so that as tough times come, you can stand firm.

Throughout history, Christian people have found great inner strength and comfort in the Psalms. They have experienced God’s promise of knowing a quite joy, a confidence and peace as they set God and his Son Jesus as the Lord of their life.

We’d love you to be able to join us and experience this encouragement, strength and comfort for yourself.

The Matter of Conscience Our souls do better when we do what we know to be morally right. I honked at someone at a round-about recently and felt bad about it. The reason I felt bad was that it was inconsistent with my sense of what is right and good.

God gives us an innate sense of what is right and good – we call it our “conscience”.

When we ignore this inner voice, our souls suffer guilt and shame. Honking at a round-about soon fades away, but if we stole something or were unfaithful to our partner, such things would leave long-term distress in our souls because of the way we have ignored our conscience. God offers his forgiveness to remove this distress.

I meet good people grappling with their conscience about their lifestyle. Some see, for example, that the limited quality time they have with their families because of work demands is inconsistent with their sense of what is right and good. This is a tough one to resolve, but it is a matter of conscience and it affects the wellbeing of our souls unless we address it.

If we ignore our conscience consistently enough, we can stop hearing it. In this case someone might rationalise stealing over and over or cheating on their partner.

But deep down the soul-distress gathers steam.

If our society keeps ignoring its conscience, it will stop hearing it and start embracing what we know deep down is inconsistent with our sense of what is right and good. I don’t intend any insensitivity to those facing challenging situations in this, but surely one example here is our serious consideration as a society of increasing our freedom to have abortions.

It’s out of vogue to talk about our sins, but we must be open to having such conversations because it has everything to do with having peaceful souls.

Glenmore Park’s Julia Morales has capped off an amazing year of soccer for both her club, Marconi Stallions FC and her school, Mamre Anglican School.

The 17-year-old sensation scored two goals in the Grand Final for the Marconi Stallions FC Under 17 Women’s team, handing them a 3-2 victory in extra time against the Central Coast Mariners in the National Premier League (NPL) 2 this season.

Whilst playing for Mamre Anglican School, Julia was a part of the Girl’s team that won the Combined Independent Schools (CIS) Football Cup for the first time. Qualifying for the NSW All Schools Football Challenge, Mamre Anglican School finished runners up to Westfield Sports High School.

Julia also started her futsal season with the Raiders Futsal Club and was an Assistant Coach of the Glenmore Park Football Club Under 14 Division 2 Girls’ team, with her mentor Jarrod Boné.

“Julia has had a great year on the pitch. She trained 2 days a week with her club, 2 days a week for her school and 1 day a week with her Glenmore Park Football Club team that she assisted in coaching with her fantastic mentor Jarrod. She is enjoying her football and we’re proud of Julia and her dedication” said Lorena and Charly Morales, Julia’s parents.

“I love the feeling you get when you win” smiled Julia to the Glenmore Gazette.

Mulgoa Chooses My Community Projects

Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies has announced the winners of the My Community Project, with applicants now able to bring their ideas to life.

The Mulgoa electorate will benefit from 3 projects put forward and voted on by the local community, which will now be funded by the NSW Government’s My Community Project program. The successful Mulgoa projects are: • Infants Adventure Playground ($113,746) – a safe, purposebuilt adventure playground for the Regentville/Glenmore Park community at Regentville Public School.

• A Safe Place to Play ($80,000) – a safe, secure outdoor play equipment for pre-school children and infants in the Glenmore Park Community at Glenmore Park Anglican Church.

• St Clair and District Men’s Shed Stage 2 Shed Build ($65,000) – helping in the prevention of men’s mental health issues by providing a welcoming place for men to gather.

Tanya Davies thanked all applicants and sponsors for taking the time and effort to develop their ideas and promote their projects along with the members of the community who voted.

“My Community Project captured the imagination of the Mulgoa community with people putting a lot of work into their ideas and it was great to see people get behind the projects that matter to them” Tanya Davies said.

“These projects came from the community and were voted on by the community and I now look forward to seeing applicants and sponsors getting on with the job of rolling out these projects and the benefits they will provide to the local community”.

More than $24 million was made available, spread across the entire State, for projects valued between $20,000 and $200,000 that would make communities more liveable, cultural, accessible, safe, revitalised or healthy.

Acting Treasurer Damien Tudehope said My Community Project was a great example of real grassroots democracy in action and the projects chosen to receive funding reflected the wishes of the people.

“There has been a tremendous response to the My Community Project program with more than 61,400 people casting their vote through the My Community Project website across the State” Mr Glenmore Park Community Action Tudehope said.

“I congratulate the successful project applicants and urge those Group projects that were unsuccessful to see if they could be eligible to apply for other NSW Government funding from programs such as Community Building Partnerships, which is now open.

“My Community Project was made possible by the NSW Generations Fund, a sovereign wealth fund that helps maintain debt at sustainable levels, while sharing the benefits of its returns with local communities”. Local Resident Named as ‘Good Human of the Week’

Glenmore Park resident Debbie O’Connor and her team at The Creative Fringe have been bringing warmth and comfort to some of our most disadvantaged community members by way of knitted blankets, created and donated by complete strangers.... and it seems we weren’t the only ones interested in this story!

Channel 10’s morning talk show ‘Studio 10’ got wind of the “Think Outside the Square” knitting challenge that has been facilitated by The Creative Fringe. Impressed with this initiative and the incredible results of the challenge, which was supported by so many locals’, the Studio 10 producer called Debbie to ask if she’d be featured in their ‘Good Human of the Week’ segment.

Over the past 3 years that Debbie and her team have been running this challenge, they have donated over 220 blankets to local charities. Blankets that have been made with love by supportive knitters and crocheters from all over the country.

Packages from as far as Darwin, Wagga Wagga and the Central Coast have arrived with bundles of squares ready to be sewn, or even fully completed blankets. It’s one thing to knit all the squares however, the mammoth task of sewing them all together once again relies on the goodness of the volunteers.

“It is incredibly humbling to see such support from our community” commented Debbie O’Connor. “We could never have envisioned such success when we decided to do this. Our goal was to donate 5 blankets that first year, yet we managed to donate 49! We honestly had no idea what a huge impact this would make”.

On Friday 13th September, the camera crew from Studio 10 came to The Creative Fringe and interviewed Debbie live for their ‘Good Human of the Week’ segment.

Growing up in a close-knit town in South Africa, Debbie was raised in an environment that bands together in times of adversity which is why she opened Penrith’s most awarded coworking space, to support small businesses in a community environment. Through The Creative Fringe and their ethos of being ‘Co-workers with a Conscience’, she has been able to support other local charities in various ways. The “Think Outside the Square” challenge is by far the most successful.

Giving back to the community that she has called home for the past 20 years was never for the fame or notoriety, but it seems that word really does spread quickly to the unlikeliest of places when such selfless acts are displayed.

This year’s challenge may be over but not for long. The 2020 “Think Outside the Square” challenge will be back and better than ever, starting 1st May, so feel free to keep knitting or crocheting for that.

The Glenmore Park Cricket Club are ready to start the 2019/2020 season with bite, thanks to a successful year both on and off the pitch for the local club.

The Redbacks begin the season with around 250 players already registered, which is an increase of 20% new registrations compared to the previous year. This makes up a total of 13 junior teams and 7 senior teams, with a new Club President at the helm.

Last season was highlighted by four premierships for the club, with two junior teams (Under 12’s and Under 13’s Division 1) and two senior teams (3rd and 4th Grade) taking home the trophies. Off the field, they were also able to work with the NSW Government, Cricket NSW and the Penrith City Council to upgrade both Blue Hills Oval and have four new nets installed at Ched Towns Reserve. This has effectively doubled their training capacity each night.

“I’m looking forward to continuing to promote the growth of cricket in the local community. This includes keeping our club at the forefront of innovation. In recent seasons, we have led the way with our social media engagement, ensuring all our teams get coverage through our social media platforms, especially Facebook and a YouTube channel where match highlights can be found. Adding to this, there will be the launch of a fortnightly podcast ‘Redbacks Radio’ to showcase some of the great stories around the club” said Adrian D’Agostino, Club President of Glenmore Park Cricket Club.

“We were also the first club in the district to introduce Big Bashstyle coloured uniforms to the local competition. It was exciting this year that, through the hard work of our committee, we were able to provide all players young and old with our new playing shirt, training shirt and supporters shirt for no addition cost to our members” he added.

Developing a Positive Relationship with your Child Phil Nunn, an Australian psychologist, says that parenting is like having a rope around your waist. Parenting is all about knowing when to let the rope out and when to reel it in.

I take this metaphor a little bit further. The rope around your waist is the relationship you have with your child.

No rope = no relationship. Without a relationship there is no letting out and no reeling in. Your child is flailing about at the end of the rope without being hitched to something. That’s a dangerous and scary place for a child to be. In my experience most of these kids can look angry or overly independent.

Without a strong and positive parent-child relationship, your child will not listen to you and will not do as you ask. It really is that simple. Having a relationship with your child is the most important thing that you can do as a parent.

I reckon that building a relationship is about 80% of the parenting effort. So, if you are disciplining and punishing your children about 80% of the time, then think about taking an about-turn, and concentrate on the relationship instead, and see how that changes things.

So, how do you develop a positive relationship with your child?

Hugs, touch, care, unconditional love, attention, spending time with them, descriptive praise, nurture, listening to them when they talk, are relationship builders.

Things like put-downs, name calling, criticism, teasing, telling them that they are ‘bad’ or ‘naughty’, and swearing at your kids are relationship killers.

Dr Robyn Dolby also uses the rope metaphor to explain how parents relate to their children. She says that if your child is used to being out on the end of the rope most of the time, then you need to reel the rope IN very slowly.

The same can be said for children who have been kept too close and too controlled (over protected) or kids who experience anxiety. You need to let the rope OUT very slowly, so they don’t get scared.

Relationship. It is essential to growing strong, resilient, healthy, and happy humans.

Parent-Teacher Interviews Throughout the year, schools take several opportunities to connect with families and share progress of the student. One such way is through Parent-Teacher Interviews, sometimes referred to as ParentTeacher Conferences. Most schools will hold interviews once or twice a year and they are often held around the time half-yearly and yearly reports are sent out.

Parent-Teacher Interviews can be a bit daunting for those parents who feel unsure of what to expect or what questions to ask, but the chance to get feedback, solidify home-school partnerships, and to be able to provide insight that would otherwise not be given is invaluable.

To make the most out of interviews, you should aim to do the following three things: 1. Be positive and confident - teachers and schools genuinely want the best for your child, just as you do. A positive partnership between home and school is proven to increase student achievement and well-being.

2. Prepare any questions you have – no question is too small, big or silly. If you have any concerns, it is much better to address them upfront rather than worry or feel like your child’s needs are not being met in some way. Some general questions you may like to ask are: Does my child seem to be struggling in any area? How can I best support my child’s learning? Is my child at the expected level for his/her age? Can you tell me about my child’s behaviour in class and the playground?

3. Listen carefully to the teacher’s observations and keep an open mind – children can behave in a different way in alternate environments so you may get feedback that you do not expect. Share your thoughts from your perspective and keep the lines of communication open beyond the interview.

Hi everyone!

My name is Kobhi and I am 9 years old. I love to help my Mum and Dad cook yummy food in the kitchen.

Each month, I will share with you some of my favourite recipes. Oh yeah, make sure you always have an adult helping you cook.

Cookies & Cream Ice Cream

Ingredients

600ml of cream One can of condensed milk One teaspoon of vanilla essence Five chocolate cookies Method

1. Your adult helper needs to beat the cream with a mixer until it starts to get thick (Mum calls that thicken).

2. Add the vanilla essence and beat it until a lightly whipped cream is made. This is another step for your helper.

3. Add the condensed milk. Make sure you keep beating it until it starts to get thick and turns into a nice cream.

4. Crush the cookies. This is my favourite step! Try not to eat the cookies ; ) 5. The next step for your helper is to keep beating the cream and to add the cookies (Yummo) 6. Pour all the ingredients into a container that has a lid on it to seal it. Put it into the freezer until it goes hard. We made the ice cream at night and put it in the freezer overnight for about 8 hours.

Have you completed your Bushfire Survival Plan?

Over the past two months, Regentville Rural Fire Brigade have sent countless crews to Kempsey, Tenterfield, Armidale and even South East Queensland. They have been assisting with devastating bush and grass fires that have unfortunately experienced property loss.

It will not be long before these sorts of fire conditions hit the Greater Sydney Area!

With already dry fuel levels, the days getting warmer and winds gusting around, local crews have already had their hands full with fires around the Penrith area and this activity is due to increase, very soon.

They have done their training, kept the trucks of a high standard and are ready for the season to come, but need your help. They want to see people completing their bushfire survival plans. Do you know what to do and when, what to take and where to go should you decide to leave? Obviously cleaning out the gutters and a general clean-up of the yard also goes a long way.

If you are not sure on how to complete your bushfire survival plan, go to myfireplan.com.au and follow the easy step-by-step process. Alternatively, they are more than happy to assist in completing one with you and have plenty on hand to distribute.

People in the community should be vigilant, watch for suspicious behaviour around bush and grass areas and report all unattended fires to 000 immediately!

If you have ever been interested in becoming a volunteer with the RFS, please head to Regentville RFB between 7:00pm and 9:00pm on Tuesdays. They are located at 20 Jeanette Street in Regentville.

Big Boost to Bass Stocking!

Over the past two stocking seasons, NSW DPI has been releasing Australian bass into Glenmore Loch, located in Glenmore Park, as part of the Native Fish Stocking Program.

Over this time, DPI staff have been monitoring the success of fish releases at different life cycle stages after hatching. In 2017, bass fry were released at 90 days after hatching (25mm) compared to 2018 when released at 55 days after hatching (15mm).

Recent monitoring has been successful with catches of bass revealing both size classes. The successful release of both size classes will now allow DPI staff to continue stocking earlier and to maximise production in the hatchery at Port Stephens. This will allow for greater numbers of bass to be released with obvious benefits to recreational fishing throughout NSW. As well as continuing to stock at Glenmore Loch, DPI will this season stock up to 40 eastern impoundments with 350,000 juvenile bass, ensuring we all enjoy great fishing opportunities for this hugely popular native species.

Exercise – How it protects Mitochondria and prevents Muscle Loss with Aging Mitochondria are tiny bacteria, that billions of years ago invaded the cells of our ancient ancestor’s. They directly or indirectly, power everything that happens inside our cells.

Their number per cell is a measure of cellular health. Reduced levels underlie age-related muscle loss & debility, while highermitochondria-levels help ensure muscle: 1. Volume, 2. Health, 3. Ability to respond to therapy The young (on average) respond to therapy faster. Given that mitochondrial number and activity declines with age, an ‘age related’ decline in people’s ability to respond to therapy seems self-evident, right? Wrong. It doesn’t need to be so.

A key for maintaining healthy muscle mitochondria with age is regular exercise. Terjung etal (2002), state that far from being a natural outcome of aging, reduced mitochondrial number & loss of muscle mass and function is more likely due to the fact that, as we get older, we become sedentary.

Research shows that: 1. Lifelong endurance training attenuates decline in both pumping efficiency and cardiac output of blood 2. Exercise robustly increases building of new blood capillaries in muscle of older people

3. This increased ‘capillarity’ allows an increase in oxygen uptake of active muscle by 25% 4. Exercise sends hormonal signals to muscle. Together the improvement in blood & oxygen delivery capacity combined with greater mitochondrial numbers, allows the production of significantly more ATP 6. This ensures great muscle power in every muscle cell during exercise 7. This mitochondrial capacity stays with us after exercise. So, during periods of rest in between bouts of training, muscles now have much-improved blood flow and nutrient and oxygen delivery, and greater energy production capacities, allowing highly efficient: a. repair of any tissue damage done during exercise, b. building of new muscle cells & connective tissue c. day to day function (including cell maintenance) d. improved healing capacity Again, it is easy to see why people who exercise heal more quickly. Exercise lowers inflammation both locally in muscle tissue and systemically. We will discuss this next month.

Here we are in October already. The month where we’re greeted with another set of school holidays and dare I say it, the month where we begin to lay out our plans for Christmas and the New Year!

Here at the District Gazette we are passionate about raising funds and awareness of rare lung diseases. Many of these are terminal with no treatment available. We’d like to see more research, treatment and in a perfect world, a cure so that those afflicted no longer suffer in silence.
