Mum! Dad! The batteries are flat! The game is broken! There’s no more chocolate!

Ever noticed at Christmas how it doesn’t take long for something to break or run out? The special toy we took days to find has broken. A key part has fallen off never to be seen again. There are gifts we tire of or never use which are quietly retired to the cupboard.

Is there a gift that lasts or that does not wear out; one we can always use?

One of the best known, most loved verses of the Bible speaks to this.

In John’s Gospel, Jesus says these wonderful words; “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

This life changing truth brings real, sure, confident hope.

God, the creator of all things, loved people so much that he sent his unique, precious, one and only Son, Jesus, into our world to die for us, so when we turn to him in faith and trust, committing our lives to him, humbly depending on him for direction in life, we will not perish but have life, real life going on for all eternity!

What a gift! Jesus does not wear out. He does not let us down or pass a “use by date.” He does not become irrelevant, but he fills us with peace, hope and joy.

Christmas is a celebration that our loving God sent Jesus so we could have this free gift of eternal life. When you’re thinking about Christmas gifts, it doesn’t get much better!

Jesus invites you to join him in a celebration that will go on for all eternity. It would be tragic if in the busyness of Christmas, shopping, dinners, parties, even the sadness of remembering happier times, if you said “no” to this wonderful invitation.

Don’t let Christmas go by without saying “yes!” to Jesus, accepting his invitation and putting your faith and trust in him.

THEN CALL JOHN 0423 019 053 Winter sleep is over, Spring has come full of colour and new life Local 11-year-old girl Lucia Hampton recently won the regional Miss Junior Fashion Week Australia competition and was invited to compete as a National Finalist for Miss Junior Fashion Week Australia.

The event was held at Pullman Melbourne Albert Park and saw over 100 competitors across all three divisions compete for a title and the chance to win a trip to the USA to compete in the International Final.

Miss Fashion Week is the first organisation that bridges modelling with pageantry. They are big advocates for positive self-image, self-love and self-confidence.

“Lucia enjoys photographic modelling, and this was the first opportunity we had come across to be involved in runway modelling. The Miss Fashion Week Australia motto is ‘I am Enough’ and really promotes self-confidence and positive body image which is very important for young girls. I felt that this would be the perfect competition for Lucia to test the waters” said Hayley Hampton, Lucia’s mother.

After competing in Casual Wear, Party Wear and Interview, Lucia was awarded 1st Runner Up in her age division and she was invited to attend the International Finals in Dallas. This was an amazing achievement as it was her very first modelling competition that she had entered, with no formal training or experience.

“Lucia was thrilled when she was awarded 1st Runner Up, as this was her first competition. Many of the other girls had competed before and had a lot more experience than her. Being invited to compete on an international level was something we hadn’t planned for and was very unexpected” explained Hayley to the Glenmore Gazette.

“She has really enjoyed this experience and is planning on finding more opportunities to pursue modelling in the future” ended Hayley.

Pride and Peace Don’t Mix It’s good to have pride in things – like our appearance or our family. But as a vice pride is very destructive to our souls.

Pride tells us we are better than others, and that we don’t need help from anyone else. We are self-sufficient, complete, and in control.

However, pride as a way of living has some serious flaws.

Think of the person who, let’s say, earns a million dollars by the age of 31 and convinces himself he is self-sufficient and can control his future but is (underneath it all) afraid of not having enough. In this case he is still poor. We can pridefully work to control the future but until we lay down our pride and address our fears, the future will hold little hope and we will have no inner peace. Pride and peace don’t mix.

Again, think of someone who would never ask for help because of pride but ends up in a place where she needs help.

I watched a woman trying to juggle an armful of groceries at Woolies this week. People offered help but she was too proud to accept, and apples went rolling down the aisle. No big deal really. But if we seriously need help, life and death help, but pride keeps us from accepting it the consequences are also serious. We are left out of our depth without any hope because we will not look for help beyond ourselves. And without hope our inner peace will be lost. Pride and peace don’t mix.

Saint Augustine wrote: “God being God offends human pride.”

We won’t seek God’s help often because we are too proud. But the Bible describes Jesus Christ as the Prince of Peace for a reason, and that is because when we reach out to Him for help, we discover hope and our souls are blessed with inner peace.

This is what Christmas is about. Trade pride for peace and go well

Rob’s Scouting Adventure

Local Glenmore Park resident, Rob Rigby, has lived in the Penrith area his whole life. His day job is as a TAFE heavy vehicles and plant teacher; however, this 44-yearold married man with 3 boys, has a passion for all things outdoors and adventure. Some of his main hobbies are cycling, going to the gym, mixed netball and most surprisingly, scouting.

Rob has been involved with Scouts NSW for 10 years.

He started off as the group treasurer and then became a Scout Section Leader before moving to Cubs 3 years ago.

He is currently the Panther Pack Cub Scout Leader at 1st South Penrith Scouts and is known by the Cubs as Rock.

Rob explained to the Glenmore Gazette, “I got involved with Scouts because my older kids joined Scouts. Unlike many leaders who were Scouts as youth members, I had no background in scouting before 2009”. Not being a Scout as a youth meant some of the skills other people already possessed, Rob had to learn. Some of these included tying knots and paddling skills when canoeing.

Out of all the engaging outdoor activities Scouts has to offer, canoeing is Rob’s favourite. He also enjoys getting out in nature by hiking and camping; having the backdrop of the Blue Mountains and Nepean River to our suburb, we are certainly not short of places to explore. Rob encourages everyone to give scouting a try, “Scouting is something I encourage all kids and adults to try.

Getting outside and out of my comfort zone has been an experience I can’t put a price on”.

Last month, NGS Super announced the winners of the 2019 NGS Super Scholarship Awards, recognising teachers and staff members in education who are actively working on their career development, while also contributing to the wider sector.

Since the Scholarship Awards were established nine years ago, the fund has given over $250,000 to members in the education sector.

Yvonne Terweeme from Bethany Catholic Primary School in Glenmore Park was one of six winners recognised. Yvonne will undertake a Stronger Smarter Leadership Program, where she will increase her leadership capabilities working towards her goal of incorporating Indigenous language into the programs and culture of her school.

The Judges’ Choice award winner, Yvonne said it was a dream come true to win the scholarship.

“Instilling High-Expectations Relationships will be vital to improving educational outcomes for school children, particularly for indigenous students.

“The Stronger Smarter Leadership course will equip me with valuable tools that I can pass on to my students as well as my colleagues and the wider community to ensure that everyone is able to get involved, unlock their confidence and work towards being their best selves.

“I’m really excited to share my learnings with our community and have already connected with indigenous education unit Jarara”.

“Every year, we are impressed by the calibre of applications we receive, and this year is no exception. From global citizenship programs to STEM skills development, to say we are excited about what this year’s winners have planned is an understatement” said Laura Wright, Chief Executive Officer of NGS Super.

Brumbies Tour of Samoa a Success The Glenmore Park Brumbies J.R.L.F.C Under 13 Division 1 boys’ team have just returned from a successful goodwill tour of Samoa, which saw them play against local schools, promote mental health awareness and promote the game of rugby league.

The 9-day tour to Samoa saw 16 players and 24 adults make the trip together to the Pacific Island.

Whilst there, they toured Savai’i, the largest island in Samoa, and Apia, the capital city.

The major sponsors of the tour were RUOK? and Panthers on the Prowl. RUOK? is a suicide prevention charity in Australia and Panthers on the Prowl is a program that promotes the wellbeing of young people in the local community. The trip would not have been possible without their generosity.

An important part of the tour was the Brumbies team promoting RUOK? and creating awareness around suicide prevention and mental health.

The boys spent 5 days in Savai’i, where they played a game of rugby league against a local school. The second leg of the trip was for 4 days in Apia, where they also played against another school. The opportunity to represent Glenmore Park and indeed Australia whilst playing the sport they love in another country was an experience they will never forget.

“There were so many highlights of the tour, too many to mention. The cultural visits to villages and swimming with turtles were memorable. Playing games of rugby league against other kids and handing all our boots and gear over was pretty special.

Just generally seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces” said Craig Button, Glenmore Park Brumbies Under 13 Division 1 boys’ team representative and parent.

New School Year Worries As the school year draws to a close next month, anxiety about the following year can start to kick in for some children and parents.

Which teacher? Who’s class? Which friends?

The uncertainty and fear of the unknown can be overwhelming and therefore the school holidays over Christmas can be quite uncomfortable for some. Some might say that it is ‘tough luck’; this is just a part of life and kids need to learn to adapt to change.

Whilst this is correct in some respects, children (especially those with additional needs such as anxiety disorders and Autism) still need support through this time and guidance in managing their feelings.

From a schooling perspective, children should be given the opportunity to visit the area of the school they will be in, become familiar with the staff on that grade and be kept with at least one friend moving forward. This is obviously in an ideal world and it is noted that whilst these practises are attempted at most schools to some degree, it is not guaranteed, and changes may occur. Due to the unpredictable nature of staffing, especially in schools with fluctuation of numbers, last minute change can be unavoidable. It is for this reason that parental support around change is paramount.

As parents, you can have discussions around feelings and different scenarios.

Validate your child’s feelings but be mindful that you do not create more anxiety; be guided by your child’s responses and assure them that whatever happens, the school and you care about them being safe and happy at school and you will work together to ensure that they feel that way. If your child exhibits strong feelings of worry, it could also be beneficial to chat to the School Counsellor or Stage Coordinator/ Assistant Principal about your child’s transition. r Anxiety about new year can start as this year comes to an end | Image: www.pexels.com. Hi everyone!

My name is Kobhi and I am 9 years old. I love to help my Mum and Dad cook yummy food in the kitchen.

Each month, I will share with you some of my favourite recipes. Oh yeah, make sure you always have an adult helping you cook.

Ko's Cottage Pie

Ingredients

550gm Beef Mince 1 Onion - Diced 1 Cup Frozen Mixed Veggies 1 440g can Tomato Soup 1 440g Can Diced or Crushed Tomatoes 1 Tbs Tomato Paste 1 Cup Beef Stock 4 Medium Potatoes 1 Tbs Butter 100ml Milk Salt + Pepper to taste Method

1. Ask your adult helper to turn the oven on at 180 degrees or 150 degrees (fan forced).

2. Your adult helper needs to cook the mince and the onion in the frypan, until brown.

3. Add the frozen veggies now (my brother doesn't like these, but he just picks them out).

4. Add the tomato soup, diced tomatoes and beef stock. With your adult helper, cook on a low heat until it thickens and is not too saucy!

5. Let the mince mixture sit to cool.

6. The next step for your helper is to peel and dice the potatoes and boil them in a pot until soft.

7. Drain the water from the potatoes, add the butter and milk, mash them until smooth.

8. Grease a small oven proof tray; add the mince mixture and top with the potato mixture.

9. Ask your adult helper to place the dish in the oven for 35 minutes or until brown on top.

10. Ready to serve.

Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) is a rare lung disease in which the tissue around the air sacs within the lungs become thickened and scarred. Hula Girls Shake Up the Competition Glenmore Park Netball Club’s 12C team, the Hula Girls, were undefeated during the latest Penrith District Netball Association regular season, winning 14 games out of 14 played.

In the regular season, they scored 318 goals for with only 92 against.

In the finals’ series, they won a close-fought major semi-final 18-15 against Cambridge Park, the 2nd placed team, but were matched up against Emmaus in the Grand Final.

As everyone knows in sport anything is possible and anyone can win on the day.

Unfortunately, the Glenmore Park team encountered a fast-opening Emmaus side that never let them recover, going down 13-26 in the decider.

The Hula Girls’ team coach, Erin Vicary said “Teams were divided at the start of the year to ‘build’ sides. It was so good to see the friendships girls made so quickly, which I think is one of the reasons the girls did so well this year. I always enjoyed training days and seeing the girls each week. I look forward to next season and what their skills and team bond can achieve for them”.

Exercise May Help Overcome Your Bad Genes and Age-Related Decline My August article hinted that your genes don’t determine the person you become. Diet and exercise, have huge positive influences even if you have poor genetics. Let’s illustrate this. ‘mtDNA-mutator’ mice have ‘really bad’ genes. They accumulate 3-5 times as many mitochondrial DNA mutations as wild type mice in equivalent time. This leads to: • mitochondrial dysfunction (in biogenesis & fission), • excessive free radical production • oxidative stress & damage to cells • accelerated body cell death rates • loss of cell reserve (aging).

This loss of cell reserve (fewer properly-working body cells) leads these mice to suffer from ‘progeria’, a disorder with profound premature aging and early death. Like old people these mice have reduced fertility, muscle loss (sarcopenia) and subcutaneous fat loss, hair loss, curved spines, osteoporosis, anaemia, heart enlargement, and they get all these things very early in life.

Key is that their mitochondria malfunction first, well before the appearance of the actual signs of aging. Can anything delay this onset of mitochondrial changes and thus aging?

mice, demonstrated how regular endurance exercise can help even these genetically challenged mice. They showed ‘that 5 months of endurance exercise induced systemic mitochondrial biogenesis, prevented mitochondrial DNA deletions and mutations, increased mitochondrial energy production capacity, restored mitochondrial structure, and blunted pathological levels of’ cell death ‘in multiple tissues of the mtDNA mutator mice. All this conferred complete protection from progeria, ‘multisystem pathology, and prevented premature mortality in these mice’. In short, the regular endurance exercise was able to overcome the severe genetic defects that these mice had. The authors concluded that, ‘the systemic mitochondrial rejuvenation through endurance exercise promises to be an effective therapeutic approach to mitigating mitochondrial dysfunction in aging and related comorbidities’ (i.e. diseases).

Most of us will not have to overcome such severe genetic defects.

For many of us, our lack of exercise will be the key contributor to the mitochondrial dysfunction that occurs in our tissues well before we see our outer signs of aging, including muscle loss.

While, appropriate regular endurance exercise may be a key preventer of our age-related decline, and quicken response to therapy.

Dingo Den Discovery Experience

You could be forgiven for thinking you were lost. The residential street conjures imagery of family gatherings and lazy Sunday’s watering gardens. Your only clue is in the driveway; guests seated, waiting to begin their unique experience.

A friend’s story of an experience surrounded by an affectionate and too often misunderstood Australian native prompted you to investigate this little-known sanctuary and book their Discovery Experience; held on the second Saturday of each month.

The morning begins with an introduction by the founder. He opens everyone’s eyes to the plight of our dingo, the cruelties they face and the reasons they are so important within our ecosystem. It is finally time.

As the gates open you are transported to the outback; beautiful Australian flora grows around a dam, native bees buzz and dens are propped up against the sky in a desert style zone. Instantly the dingoes rush to greet you and as you kneel to meet them you are smothered in kisses, all of them eager to investigate and learn who you are; this is their handshake.

Volunteers guide you through the sanctuary, explaining the various zones created within and walking you past enclosures where wild-borns look back at you hesitantly but curiously. As the tour ends, the dingoes are brought on lead to the guests; ready for a peaceful bushwalk. You walk Onyx, a shy but gentle black alpine dingo and upon returning he lets you pat and groom him before re-entering the sanctuary. Your experience finishes with an opportunity to hand feed the pack, they all know how to sit, shake and drop and you get great photos from an experienced photographer. You say goodbye and head back onto the street, the magic of the sanctuary hidden behind those gates.
