Locals Compete at Australian Transplant Games The spirit of the Australian Transplant Games is to encourage individuals to be involved in a sporting competition, and to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle. Many competitors previously may not have been able to engage in any sort of sporting activity due to their illness.

The Transplant Games are a fantastic celebration of the gift of life that transplantation is and are centred around saying thanks for organ donation and promoting transplantation to Australia and the World.

The Transplant Games are held to recognise the connection between people as a consequence of organ donation, thus the competitors are recipients, donors, donor’s families, supporters, relatives and others.

Kyla Devine of Glenmore Park and her brother, Kobi, were competing in the Games as recipient and supporter respectively.

Kyla, a liver recipient at just 4 months old. Kobi is the little brother who has experienced Kyla’s medical journey for all his life.

Kyla aged 11, competed in the 9-11 years girls age group and across athletics and swimming disciplines won 8 medals; 7 Gold and 1 Silver.

Kobi, aged 9 competed in the same age group for boys and won a gold, a silver and a bronze, but won admiration and respect for not begrudging Kyla’s ‘limelight’. Both were justifiably pleased about their individual performances.

Remembrance Day – Lest We Forget Remembrance Day in Australia will be a day of significance this year.

Sunday the 11th of November marks the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice, which ended the First World War in 1918.

In 1997, Governor-General William Deane issued a formal proclamation that would declare the 11th of November to be Remembrance Day. The proclamation urged all Australians to observe one minutes silence at 11:00am on the 11th of November each year. Today, the loss of Australian lives from all wars and conflicts across the world are honoured on Remembrance Day. In other allied countries around the world such as New Zealand, Canada and the United States, the 11th of November is known as Armistice Day. This is a day to remember those who died in the First World War. In Australia, flags are flown at half-mast as a sign of mourning and respect on Remembrance Day. Services across the country are held at war memorials at 11:00am, where the ‘Last Post’ is played by a bugler and one minutes silence is observed.

On Remembrance Day in 1993, Australia commemorated the day by laying to rest an Unknown Soldier in the Hall of Memory at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. The Unknown Soldier was buried in a coffin made from Tasmanian Blackwood with his bayonet and a spring of wattle by him.

Red poppies are worn on items of clothing on the 11th of November to remember those who died during war. Poppies were amongst the first flowers that came from the battlefields of northern France and Belgium during the First World War. Sprigs of rosemary are also worn on Remembrance Day and ANZAC Day. Let It Be and Find Peace Recently my foot was badly fractured. I thought, “Something like that will never happen to me!” Well, it did. After serious surgery I have a five-centimetre plate and seven screws in my foot.

We want to believe that we are in control and can be certain about our future. But life consistently brings the unexpected – both good and bad. This reminds us that we are not in control, and that little is certain in life. The more we can embrace this, the better we will be able to find peace when something that we never thought would happen to us, does.

As I write, I am mid-way through six weeks on crutches, then I face another six in a boot. On crutches I have effectively lost use of my hands and can’t do most of my usual activities.

My soul sinks each time I try to wrestle back control as if to reverse the uncertainty and the injury, but it has happened now,

and my peace requires a different approach. We can change some things but not others.

I realise that I must LET IT BE and look now for what is good in whatever is before me in each moment. I find this inner strength in the way I relate to God and His love – this gives me hope that each day will bring good my way, even with a fractured foot.

How do you find this sort of inner strength?

It is important to be able to let it be and live our lives because life itself is uncertain. The Bible teaches: “How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog--it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.”

Christmas is almost here again to celebrate the coming of Jesus Christ – what He does for us is the key to being able, in the face of the uncertainty of life, to let it be and find peace.

One Amazing Girl

Local student Shelby-Lea Grech is an Ambassador for One Girl, with a passion for helping those in need. The community came together earlier this month and helped support her ‘One Girl’ Education Gala, a fundraising gala night held at Glenmore Park High School.

One Girl are a non-profit organisation based in Australia that help with providing education for girls in Sierra Leone and Uganda. All donations at the fundraising gala night went towards assisting the organisation.

“I have been a One Girl Ambassador for a year now. I chose to organise a fundraising gala at my school because it allowed me to have a wide range of guests and members of the community present to raise funds for One Girl, in a way that spread awareness and educated others of the conditions in Sierra Leone and Uganda. The gala helped raise funds alongside other fundraising I took part in. The evening included a speech I gave, providing information about One Girl, musical performances from students at Glenmore Park High School, a raffle and silent auction, and a light supper” explained Shelby-Lea. Every donation counts towards making a change for the girls of these countries. For every $300 raised, this is enough to educate a girl for a year and supply her with everything she requires to attend school.

“After I complete my studies, I hope to attend university to eventually work as a psychologist. I would like to continue to contribute to the world where I can and help make a change through humanitarian work with organisations such as One Girl.

Jesus; The Joy of Christmas Not many will have heard of Pieter Bruegel. He was perhaps the most significant Dutch artist of the 16th Century. Bruegel was recognised as a pioneer of large paintings, especially of landscapes and peasant scenes.

One painting, “The Census at Bethlehem” completed in 1566, was based on the scene from the Bible’s Gospel of Luke, with Joseph and Mary arriving at the stable for the birth of their child Jesus. The painting was regarded as a classic not only because of Breugel’s eye for detail, but also because towards the bottom of the painting, among a crowd of people, we see Joseph and his pregnant wife Mary.

It is a striking scene. Children are playing. There is a snowball fight. People are preparing, cooking and eating food. Simply, people are celebrating Christmas unaware of the extraordinary event about to take place; the birth of this child, which Luke tells us, will be the birth of a Saviour bringing “good news of great joy for all people.”

The Bible declares that as we put our trust in this Saviour, Jesus, he will rescue us from the consequences of the fact that we do not treat God as we should. As you trust him, you will discover how Jesus gives us peace for today and confident hope for the future.

Please don’t be unaware of this extraordinary event; the birth of our Saviour!

Joanne Making a Difference

Local resident Joanne Younger held a ‘Girls Night In’ Fundraiser at Gloria Jean’s Coffees at Glenmore Park last month, raising much needed funds for the Cancer Council.

The pink themed event included stalls, cupcakes, assorted food and beverages, raffles and games. Raffle prizes were donated by local businesses.

“Breast cancer has touched a few of my friends lives and I wanted to help raise funds towards finding a cure” said Joanne.

Donations can be dropped off to Gloria Jean’s Coffees at Glenmore Park.

Brumbies Tour of Samoa a Success The Glenmore Park Brumbies Under 13 rugby league team returned last month from their Scoring Tries Across the Pacific Samoa Tour, with the trip a huge success that will help shape the development of the group of boys in so many ways.

The families of all the players worked tirelessly for the 18 months leading up to the tour with countless hours of fundraising activities, in conjunction with sourcing player sponsors. This all lead to every player being financially supported for the tour.

Visiting both the islands of Upolu and Savaii meant beautiful Samoa presented them with a stunning backdrop of pristine beaches, lush rainforests, breathtaking waterfalls, idyllic lagoons…. and, an opportunity to swim with the local turtles!

The group also immersed themselves into the rich culture and learned about traditional Samoan activities including wood carving, basket weaving, tapa making, and they even got to witness a traditional tattoo being applied while learning of the incredible significance it brings.

As much as the raw and natural beauty of Samoa stays ingrained in the team’s memories, the thing that will leave a lasting impression on the mind and the souls of this group is the warm welcome and hospitality shown by the people. The incredible way the Brumbies were embraced into the villages visited was touching, powerful and at times quite moving.

It needs to not go unsaid that the team were there, ultimately to play some rugby league. These games evolved into tour highlights for all the players and their families. The boys represented their club, their sponsors, their families and ultimately their country with the highest level of sportsmanship that could be asked. There was fun, laughs, lots of tries, new friendships, ‘Ava ceremonies, hakas, swapping of gifts and endless smiles.

It is hoped this tour will become an annual appointment for the Under 13 teams that play at Glenmore Park Brumbies. As a community there could be no better incentive than to know that any support given will be life changing for these teams. It all goes into using opportunities as a community to help our boys become great young men.

THEN CALL JOHN 0423 019 053 Glenmore Park’s Hayden Green recently made a successful return to the sport of harness racing, taking part in the Indigenous Drivers Series after several years away from the sport.

The talented local driver was excited to return to the trots and participated in the series when it first began seven years ago.

“I was fortunate enough to have been invited to participate in the inaugural series all the way back in 2011. It was the first time in Australian harness racing history that a race for drivers of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island heritage was ever held” said Hayden.

Green continued to ride three more times in the Indigenous Drivers Series before leaving the industry to further his studies.

He began studying in Community Services, where he became a Case Worker in the out of home care sector for Kari. Kari are also major sponsors of the series.

Hayden got his start in harness racing at the age of just 5 and drove mini trots in Sydney. He moved to Queensland with his family when he was 10 and soon progressed to become a junior driver at the age of 16.

“I was fortunate enough to win several races and to train and drive my best horse ‘Jaccka Limon’ who earned just over $150,000 in his career. Whilst in Queensland, I was also the trainer for Jonathan Brown, the former Captain of the Brisbane Lions AFL club” Green explained.

He plans to participate in the series and then return to working as a Case Worker in the community. If the opportunity comes for him to train horses full time in the future, he may consider returning as a trainer.

“Harness racing is a very family-oriented sport. It’s something I believe you are never able to just walk away from, it is a very tight knit family-like sport. All my friends and family are in harness racing. Ron’s Gift to Regentville Regentville Public School recently celebrated their 150th birthday, with a day of fun for students, teachers, families and friends of the school. To help mark the occasion, local resident Ron Vaughan presented the historic school with a steel sculpture that he handmade, titled ‘From Small Country School to Big City Place’.

The large sculpture, which depicts the Regentville Public School schoolhouse with 150 Years above that, was completed in March this year. It took Ron about 20 hours to make and incorporated the skills of tube bending and welding. It was then powder coated, ensuring that it will last more than 50 years mounted on the wall of the original schoolhouse, when they celebrate the 200th birthday.

What makes Ron’s sculpture even more remarkable is that this is the first one that he has ever made. He has been a vehicle builder for almost 50 years and owns his own business producing mobile platform ladders and specialised trolleys.

“I made the sculpture to remind the students, teachers and parents as they pass it each day, that this school has its roots in this community and will continue to thrive well into the future.

My inspiration was the fact that this school and schoolhouse have sat on the hill watching as Penrith grew” explained Vaughan.

Ron has seen the changes at the local school over the years, which saw three of his children also having attended over the years.

“When my son Tristan started at Regentville Public School in 1988, there was less than 100 students. He would hang out the car window and name all the kids walking down the hill. The school grew slowly as my other two children Matthew and Allyson enrolled.

When the Glenmore Park development came along, the government decided to close Regentville School and sell off the elevated blocks of land. A committee of parents was formed and with the support of the local community, we successfully fought with signs, petitions and bed sheets, to save the school in its original location”.

We all want our kids to do well and to be well. One of the things that determines social and emotional wellbeing is “resilience”. Resilience is regarded as the ability of an individual to access resources to prevent, minimise, or overcome hardship.

My favourite definition of resilience comes from a draft paper titled “Whole School Matters” (September, 2008)…

“The capacity to deal constructively with change or challenge, allowing the person to maintain or re-establish their social and emotional wellbeing in the face of difficult events. It involves thoughts, feelings, and actions.”

The more protective factors a child has, the more resilient the child will be. The protective factors are environments which provide: a sense of connection and belonging; physical and emotional safety; warm, caring and supportive relationships; and the opportunity for and recognition of achievement.

Resilience is a complex interaction of relationships, genetics and environmental factors (family, school, work, society).

The optimal environment for children is a positive one with warm reciprocal relationships, realistic expectations, boundaries and limits, and assertive discipline. Children learn resilience through feeling heard and understood, and feeling that they belong. The supports in a child’s environment build inner strengths as children learn coping skills, and about feelings and how to manage them, within the context of relationships with significant others.

There is a lot of talk these days about teaching resilience to children in school. Schools are excellent places for children to experience the protective factors mentioned above. However, we can’t treat resilience as something that our children must learn, like they learn maths, or the rules of whichever sport they choose to play. Parents are their child’s first teachers and there needs to be a greater focus on parents learning positive parenting skills and providing an environment in which our children grow their resilience skills, rather than placing the onus on children to learn resilience.

What is BYOD? BYOD stands for Bring Your Own Device. In educational settings, the initiative centres around taking a device, such as a laptop or tablet, to school for learning purposes. This concept has been around for over five years now and has been met with mixed opinions and concerns. Undeniably, however, is the need for new models of learning given the availability of personal mobile devices and other technology in the 21st century. According to the NSW Department of Education (2018), “Schools are in a position to harness students’ connection to their own personal mobile devices for the purpose of developing 21st century learning skills and for fostering digital literacy, fluency and citizenship in a safe environment”.

Apart from primarily endeavouring to integrate technology more extensively in education to promote collaborative, personalised and accessible options for learning, economics plays a huge role in the argument for the Bring Your Own Device program. Technology investments are expensive for schools, especially given the probability of needing to update resources as they become obsolete after a few years. With students bringing their own personal devices, the school can then redirect funding to other areas in technology, including the purchase and maintenance of interactive whiteboards.

BYOD also encourages students to take responsibility for their learning, manage their own tasks and collaborate with others. Every school implementing this initiative should have a BYOD Policy and students made aware of expectations for appropriate online behaviour, including social media use. Most of these policies align directly with school welfare policies of expected behaviour, which in turn also address matters such as cyberbullying.

The biggest concerns surrounding the BYOD Program are the possible distraction that can occur with technology being so readily available to students in the classroom and the possible inequity of students from lower socio-economic backgrounds that cannot afford to purchase the devices in the first place. Most NSW schools have been proactive in addressing these concerns with policies, procedures and alternative arrangements put in place to ensure BYOD is successful for all students. Kicking his Way to Success

WHAT'S COOKING

10-Minute Summer Gnocchi and Prawn Salad Ingredients 500g packet gnocchi 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 80g green beans, trimmed 2 x 35g sachets basil pesto finishing drizzle 2 tablespoons lemon juice 120g bag baby French kale leaves 500g cooked king prawns, peeled, deveined, tails intact 200g punnet perino duet tomatoes, halved 4 red radishes, sliced

Preparation 1. Cook gnocchi in a saucepan of boiling salted water for 2 minutes or until gnocchi rise to the top. Drain.

2. Heat oil in a large frying pan over high heat. Cook gnocchi, stirring occasionally for 2 to 3 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from heat. Season with salt and pepper.

Cool 5 minutes.

3. Meanwhile, place beans in a bowl. Cover with boiling water.

Stand 2 minutes. Drain. Combine pesto and lemon juice.

4. Toss gnocchi, beans, kale, prawns, tomato and radish together in a large bowl. Divide among serving bowls.

Quick Nutella Mousse 100g dark chocolate, chopped 300ml thickened cream, chilled 1/2 cup (165g) Nutella Crumbled Cadbury Flake chocolate bar, to serve Preparation 1. Place dark chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water (make sure bowl doesn’t touch the water).

Stir with a metal spoon for 3-4 mins or until chocolate just melts. Set aside for 5 mins to cool slightly.

2. Use an electric mixer to whisk the cream in a large bowl until soft peaks form. Add the Nutella and whisk until the mixture is just combined. Add the melted chocolate. Use a large metal spoon to gently marble.

Look out locals, there’s a new Black Belt in town! 12-year-old Glenmore Park resident and upcoming martial arts master, Liam recently earned his 1st Dan Black Belt in Taekwondo signifying a student’s maturity and proficiency in the sport.

Liam, who trains under Head Instructor Dave Adlam of Nepean Wolves, is the first in his family to reach this auspicious belt level with his younger brother and sister currently holding Red and Blue Belts respectively, hoping to one day follow in their big brother’s footsteps.

Taekwondo is a martial art, originating in Korea, that started to become popular in Australia during the mid-1960s. The term Taekwondo is derived from three words: Tae meaning foot, Kwon meaning fist and Do meaning method, art or way.

It is not just for fighting or self-defence, but aims to develop attitudes of self-control, willpower, humility and loyalty, whilst improving fitness, flexibility and coordination.

In order to achieve the level of 1st Dan Black Belt, Liam had to learn a number of blocking and striking techniques, compete in sparring matches and execute multiple patterns which he needed to memorise. On grading day, Liam demonstrated his knowledge, understanding and skills before Master Instructor Andrew Johnston, who has trained, competed and coached in the martial arts for over 30 years nationally and internationally.

Although he was nervous leading up to the day, Liam graded with confidence and passed with flying colours. He even got a positive mention for his reverse turning kick technique.

Liam’s father, Luke told the Gazette, “I am so proud of Liam’s achievement in Taekwondo. I see his determination each week at training and he has gone from strength to strength under Dave’s guidance. NSAIDs - Can They Affect Your Kidneys?

Can NSAIDs effect your Kidneys? The answer is yes. Whelton & Watson state that ‘in most general populations, as encountered by family physicians in the developed world, approximately 1–3% of persons exposed to an NSAID will manifest one of a variety of renal functional abnormalities typically requiring physician intervention’. It’s a small percentage but given the high rates of OTC & prescription NSAID intake, the number of at-risk people is very high.

Kidneys produce prostaglandins continuously, as do many body organs. Prostaglandins act locally to maintain proper blood flow to local tissue, fluid flow from blood to tissue, tissue repair processes, etc. NSAIDs alter normal prostaglandin production, the possible effects of which we saw last month in the stomach.

They also affect the kidney.

In descending order of clinical frequency renal abnormalities induced by NSAIDs include: 1.

Fluid retention and electrolyte disturbances 2.

Acute deterioration of kidney function 3.

Nephrotic Syndrome with interstitial nephritis 4.

Papillary necrosis Everyone ingesting an NSAID will experience some fluid (sodium & water) retention, but in the absence of obvious renal impairment, <5% of patients will manifest with obvious oedema, which is usually benign, and readily reversible on drug discontinuation. The most important electrolyte alteration is potassium retention. This becomes important in patients suffering renal impairment, heart failure, diabetes, on potassium sparing diuretics, or on blood pressure drugs called ACE inhibitors

amongst other things. Many people wanting pain relief are older and may fall into these groups.

NSAIDS will not cause reduction in kidney filtration in normal individuals but 1-0.5% of people taking NSAIDs chronically will manifest â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;acute deterioration of renal functionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. At risk patients include those with severe dehydration, congestive heart failure, cirrhosis, chronic kidney disease, nephrotic syndrome, those over 80yo. These people may have compromised renal function.

Kidney cells produce prostaglandins to compensate for this trying to normalise function. Altering prostaglandin production by kidney cells in this situation can lead to acute kidney failure.

Failure to stop NSAID use may lead to the requirement for temporary dialysis. This is usually reversible 2-7 days, sometimes weeks, after drug discontinuation.

Very infrequently, NSAIDs may lead to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Nephrotic Syndromeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;: foamy protein-filled urine, low blood albumin, high blood lipids, swelling & weight-gain; complicated by hypertension, blood clots & infections. Risk factors are obscure. The condition is usually reversible on drug discontinuation.

Papillary necrosis involves the death of certain kidney cells and irreversible kidney damage. This can occur acutely (hrs-days after a single dose) or chronically (months to years of NSAID ingestion).

The acute form is an extremely rare event at recommended dosages. However, nearly all NSAIDs produced some level of papillary necrosis in preclinical animal-model studies.

In summary, NSAIDs may be useful, but we need to remember, they also have downsides often for the very people whom may be most in need of pain & inflammation relief.

Watch Out - Snakes Are Out and About!!

With the warmer weather upon us, snakes are coming out of hibernation.

Your dog or cat may see a snake moving in the yard and its first instinct is to chase it.

The snake may attack and bite your pet as a form of defence.

Signs of snake envenomation includes: muscular weakness, wobbliness or paralysis, increased respiratory effort, trembling, salivation, vomiting, slower blood clotting time, bruising, blood in the urine, and abnormal neurological signs (including collapse, seizure, tremors, pupil enlargement).

If you are concerned that your pet has been bitten by a snake, call us immediately.

The sooner the snake anti venom is given, then higher the chance of survival.

Keeping Your Pets Safe Over Summer With the weather warming up it is important to look after your pets: â&#x20AC;˘ Provide shelter for your pets, so they get away from direct sunlight. â&#x20AC;˘ Provide plenty of water. Animals do not sweat like humans and they rely on the evaporation of the water in their mouths to cool themselves down. So they need extra water so they do not overheat. â&#x20AC;˘ Provide extra water sources in case they are spilled. â&#x20AC;˘ Provide kiddy pools so your pet can lay in the water. â&#x20AC;˘ Bring your pets indoors with air conditioning, if possible. â&#x20AC;˘ Consider day boarding in air conditioning. â&#x20AC;˘ Avoid exercising your pets during the heat of the day.

Walk them in the early morning, or later at night when it is cooler. â&#x20AC;˘ Do not leave pets in a car or vehicle.

If your pet has a medical condition, they may be more prone to heat stroke: e.g. obesity; Brachycephalic breeds (shortnosed/flat-faced) e.g. Pugs, English bull dogs, French bulldogs, Pekingese and Persian and Himalayan cats; Respiratory disease/ breathing problems - laryngeal paralysis, collapsing trachea; Thick/long hair coat; Heart problems/Cardiovascular disease; Extremes in age (young/old); Neurological disease.

Signs of Heat Stroke Common signs include: â&#x20AC;˘ Incessant panting; Drooling, salivating; Agitation, restlessness; Very red or pale gums; Bright red tongue; Increased heart rate; Breathing distress; Vomiting, Diarrhoea (possibly with blood); Signs of mental confusion, delirium; Dizziness, staggering; Lethargy; weakness; Muscle tremors; Seizures; Collapsing and lying down; Little to no urine production; Coma or Death.
