Fires and Floods I moved to Silverdale a few years ago and let me say, these last few months have been eye opening.

Growing up I was aware of ‘bushfire season’, I’d heard about properties lost and the heroics of the RFS. I remember seeing images of flooded bridges and towns on the news, I knew the SES were fantastic; but it all seemed so distant.

I grew up in the north west suburbs and the most dramatic event I saw was a brush fire near our house.

Living in Silverdale, bushfire season has much more meaning now! And, while I thank God for the recent rains, being trapped by a few roads and bridges being closed is a new experience for me.

Not to say I’ve got it tough, far from it, but these dangers, fire and flood, they once seemed so distant, now they are at my front door.

It makes me think about how we treat God. Usually he seems distant, the sort of thing you can think about (if you want to) but really, there are other things to be doing. Well, like fires and floods, sometimes he comes right up close.

Maybe you’ve had those moments. Moments of great joy, like when a child is born, and you just wish there was someone to thank.

Moments of tragedy, illness or loss, when it seems all too possible that you or someone you love will be seeing God soon.

We prepare for bushfire season, “Is your survival plan ready?”, we watch the news, jump on social media to get the latest on the flooding, but are we prepared to meet God? Do we stay ‘up to date’ with the state of our souls before the God of the universe?

Jesus tells his followers that the way to be ready to meet God, the only way to come to God by trusting in Jesus Christ (John’ Gospel Chapter 14 Verse 6). So, with fire and flood behind us, at least for now, maybe we should turn our thoughts to God. r Image: www.pexels.com

What the Rain Means In the past months we experienced week after week hovering around 40 degrees. I can recall hot days but not this consistency of sizzling hot days. It felt oppressive and with no sign of relief.

As I write rain has been falling heavily in Glenmore Park for a couple of weeks. My study was flooded, and we have all felt at times like drowned rats, but the relief is sweet.

So, what does this rain mean? It may or may not mean the drought is broken. It certainly means Warragamba Dam is at decent levels again and our lawns have a fighting chance. It means our firefighters get a hand.

What you may not know is that in the weeks leading up to this recent rain thousands of followers of Jesus Christ were specifically asking God for rain. For those who prayed when we were sizzling and with no forecast relief on the horizon, this rain means an answer to prayer.

If this is the case it has deep implications for the wellbeing of our souls. It means that when we feel oppressed and beaten down by life, God hears our prayers when we come to him. If prayer was instrumental in the coming of the rain it shows also what the Bible says about God: that he is sovereign over all of creation. In other words, he can speak over the earth and over our personal lives and bring blessing and change.

The rain means that when our souls feel empty, dry, stretched, needing relief in some way we are not alone. We are not without a way forward. If God can bring rain, he can certainly address the cry of our souls. Why would he do that for you? Because he loves you.

If your soul is dry come to God and ask for “rain” in your life.

Here’s a good prayer to pray: “Here I am God.” Go well and stay dry (or run in the rain), Paul

With a growing community and multiple sporting facilities, local resident and sports enthusiast Danielle Lynch has started a campaign into looking at forming a Little Athletics Club in Glenmore Park.

“The idea of forming a new Little Athletics Club here came from being passionate about Little Athletics and my love for the sport. I realised that once my son started Tiny Tots, that Glenmore Park really needed a club of our own in our community” said Danielle to the Glenmore Gazette.

Danielle has since started a Facebook group to gauge interest from the community this year, as well as reaching out to Penrith City Council and Little Athletics NSW about the possibility of a new club.

“It’s also important that we get the support from local Little Athletics clubs in our area, to make sure that the schedules don’t conflict, and that the weekly day or night of competition is different to theirs” she stated.

She believes that the current number of children in Glenmore Park wanting to start Little Athletics would be enough to cater for Tiny Tots (3 to 5 years) and be a good foundation for the club.

“I’ve done some research and Mulgoa Rise would be the best fit as a home for the club. There would need to be sporting facilities upgraded to accommodate for Little Athletics and this could be done through fundraising” she said.

For now, Danielle hopes that by starting the conversation, this will get the community talking about the need for a new club.

“I understand that it will take time, and I’d like to make sure that it’s done right” Danielle ended.

Street Library for Glenmore Park Local Gail Anderson believes that there’s no better way to bring the community together than through reading and sharing a love of books.

She is currently looking at establishing a street library in Glenmore Park and hopes to have the project up and running later in the year.

The keen reader stumbled across a street library in January in the Blue Mountains and was inspired by the idea.

“I was in Springwood and came across their street library. I thought I could replicate this for Glenmore Park so I can also donate books to the local area as I love reading” Gail said.

“Reading is so very important for children too. A street library would provide them with the opportunity to read and educate themselves” she added.

Gail’s favourite books to read are those about people’s travel adventures around the world. She draws on their experiences to plan her trips overseas.

Local finance broker and business owner, Karlie Scharfenberg of The Loans Suite, has had a dream start to the year, after being named in the FBAA (Finance Brokers Association of Australia) 20 Brokers to Watch in 2020 List.

This comes off the back of a successful year in 2019 for Karlie. “Making the FBAA 20 Brokers to Watch in 2020 List was an exciting surprise! I was nominated for the FBAA NSW Broker of the Year in 2019 for their end of year awards. You enter these awards with your statistics for how you are tracking as a finance broker, and I was then a finalist in this category for NSW. Then, to get the email about being in the Top 20 to Watch in 2020 was amazing. Karlie and her team at The Loans Suite have big plans ahead for the year. Since starting the business in 2016, she has recently taken on a partner due to growth.

“We have grand plans for 2020. We are expanding the business into many different areas this year, with growth of brokers and looking at putting more brokers on under The Loans Suite group. We have a team in Brisbane, Bowral and Macarthur and a satellite office in the beautiful NSW south coast of Merimbula, so we want and need more brokers in our group to keep up with the enquires and leads we are getting in” she stated.

It’s no secret that running a business can be hard work. Karlie explains that it also comes down to having the right attitude and being a good listener.

“Stay real. I believe that you need to do what your good at, stay in your own lane, don’t let ego get to you and always stay true to yourself and your client. My number one point to all my brokers is that you must listen to every client’s story, you need to care about your client and find a solution for them. Last of all, be around people and networks who inspire you and have the same values with business. It’s on again - the 116th Annual Luddenham Show will be held on Saturday the 7th and Sunday the 8th of March at Luddenham Showground.

Luddenham Show, known as ‘The Country Show,’ is traditionally the first Show in the lead up to the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Many, many months of hard work culminate for some of the best livestock and stage acts in Australia.

With these ever-changing times, the Committee of Luddenham A.H & I Society are proud to keep the traditions of the district’s biggest annual event alive and well. Both days are ‘chock-a-block’ filled with entertainment and activities for the young, and the not so young alike.

This year, they are helping to support those who have lost everything in the recent bush fires. They will be inviting people attending the Show to place donations in boxes, which will be distributed around the Showground. The money will be forwarded to the Rotary Club of Wallacia - Mulgoa Valley and 100 percent will go to the Rotary Club Bush Fire Appeal for distribution to those in the affected areas. Luddenham A.H & I Society will also be donating 5% of the Show profit to the Rotary Club Bush Fire Appeal.

New in 2020 is the Wife Carrying Competition, Hay Bale Rolling and Gumboot Throwing. These three events are sure to be lots of fun to participate in and to watch.

Kids Are a Work In Progress A child’s brain develops from the bottom-up. Certain parts of the brain are more active than other parts during a child’s development. They are still developing all of the parts of the brain but there are ‘hot spots’ at certain times in a child’s development. This brain activity has an impact on a child’s behaviour. Some of the things that they find difficult to do or understand, are a result of having a brain that continues to develop right up to the age of 25 years.

There are periods of time where your child does not have the capacity for logic, reasoning, and thinking. There are periods of time where they struggle to control their emotions. There are periods of time where they do not have the capacity to understand that other people have thoughts and feelings of their own. And where they think that the universe revolves around them. These times require lots of understanding and patience. You will still set limits and boundaries but you will expect to repeat yourself many times.

Many of the things that children do can be explained by research into the brain and child development. If your child is having tantrums, seeking attention, and not thinking things through within the normal age ranges for these behaviours, then in a strange way that’s good because they are developing as they should. All of this is happening while they are learning how to integrate their experiences, making sense of their world and their place in it, and learning language and culture.

Kids are a work in progress, which is why parenting is ongoing and ever changing.

Dingo Den Discovery Experience

When it comes to a positive home-school relationship, regular and constructive communication is the key. At the beginning of every school year, it is difficult to navigate the right time and place to discuss your child’s learning. By the time you ‘meet the teacher’ or initial parent teacher interviews come around, many parents are overwhelmed and unsure what to ask their child’s teacher. Sometimes this results in the teacher doing all the talking or the parent asking about one thing and forgetting to ask about the ten other things they were not sure about. Detailed questions are great if you have them, but what if you don’t really have any specific concerns? What do you ask when you get the opportunity to talk to your child’s teacher one-to-one?

Here are five important questions to ask your child’s teacher when you meet with them: 1. Is my child experiencing any difficulties (socially, emotionally, academically or physically) in your opinion?

2. How are my child’s individual learning needs being catered for within the classroom setting?

3. Are there any ways that I can provide additional support for the school and my child’s learning?

4. What is the best way to contact you should I need to discuss my child?

5. Is my child doing the best they can do?

These direct and simple questions are not meant to be in any way an attack on the teacher or school, so obviously the tone in which they are asked is also important. Many Stories to Tell Local author, Coral Nichols, loves writing. The prolific children’s book author, who writes under the name ‘C.D Nichols’ has recently completed her tenth book, Timmy’s Adventure.

With three of her books already published and another five planned, she has one busy year ahead.

Timmy’s Adventure was published last year and follows the life of Timmy, a mischievous grey and white cat and is the first in a series of six. Coral’s previous books that were published include Kid Courageous and Beauty.

Kid Courageous is a collection of short stories about boys and girls and their courageous acts, whilst Beauty is a picture book that tells the story of the emergence of a liquid amber sapling into the world.

“I have always loved writing, since I was a young girl. I didn’t begin serious writing until I retired, then I was able to learn my craft properly. I obtained diplomas in Professional Writing for Children, and Proofreading and Editing, and pursued several other writing courses. As well as writing children’s stories, I also write short stories for adults and have won and been short listed in several competitions” Coral explained.

She finds writing to be very therapeutic and often finds herself escaping into a world of fantasy when bringing her books to life. “I love children and believe that reading is one of the most important skills one can have. If my books can encourage young people to read, I’m happy” said Coral.

Her next project is to have the remaining five books in the Timmy’s Adventure series published, along with an adult novel she has been working on for some time.

New Walking Group for Mums A new, local walking group has been formed for mums to come together and enjoy each other’s company, whilst exercising and staying healthy. The Glenmore Park Mum’s Walking Group was created in January this year and already boasts over 100 female members.

“The group was formed after one of the members from the Glenmore Park Residents Group on Facebook page posted the question on whether there was a local walking group. At present, there are 116 female members and it’s growing rapidly after just over 4 weeks” said Lisa Smith of the Glenmore Park Mum’s Walking Group.

Lisa, together with members Rhiannon and Kayla, conduct the local walking groups on varying days and times around Glenmore Park. Weather permitting, the group aims to meet up on scheduled walks daily and they plan to add more as this grows.

“It’s important to have groups like this as so many mums want to get out and walk, but they just don’t want to do this alone.

This is a great way to meet local mums in the area too” explained Lisa to the Glenmore Gazette.

Graham Leaves The Nest With season 2020 kicking off shortly, Glenmore Park Football Club’s long-standing committee member Graham Moore has stepped down, after five successful years at the helm as President of the local sporting club.

Graham, who became President of Glenmore Park Football Club in 2015 after being the Club Treasurer for the previous 4 years, has overseen the club’s move to “The Nest” at Mulgoa Rise and the Under 12 Boys winning the State Cup in 2018 and the Under 18 Mens winning the Champions of Champions Trophy last year.

“This season, I’ve stepped down as President for personal reasons. It was probably a year earlier than initially expected, but I also think it’s a good time to allow someone else to bring fresh ideas to the club” said Graham to the Glenmore Gazette.

“I won’t be part of the GPFC committee in 2020, as I have served for a number of years and I want give the new President Chris, and the committee the opportunity to take their own direction. I will still be part of the club and involved in the coaching committee side of things as well as coaching the Under 12 Girls Division 1 team” he continued.

The biggest highlight for Graham under his tenure as President has been the move for the club from Ched Towns Reserve and Blue Hills Oval to Mulgoa Rise, now known as “The Nest”. “This has been a major factor in the club’s success in developing its cultural identity” he said. The club’s winning culture has seen the Under 12 Boys and Under 18 Mens teams victorious at State level as well as the support and development of female football, which has seen numbers grow by over 30% in the last two years.

Graham has also been a finalist for the WSW Chairman’s Award and received the Nepean Football Associations Distinguished Service Award. “The awards were humbling, and I think they recognise not just my efforts, but the committee’s work over the last 5 years. GPFC could not have achieved what it has done without such a fantastic and supportive group of volunteers” he reflected.

“I think GPFC will continue to grow and become more successful. They are in a strong position, both on and off the field. The committee is a great mixture of experienced and new members and they will ensure the club remains a big part of the community” he ended.

Cadet Kobhi on Assignment

Our very own Gazette Cadet, 10-year-old Kobhi Sanders, has just returned from assignment after spending some time in the new Vintage 88 FM Studios in Penrith with one of the region’s most experienced DJ’s, Wayne Willmington.

Vintage FM, which broadcasts as Vintage 88 FM in Western Sydney and 88.7 in Camden, is a local radio station that plays ‘the music that you grew up with’, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Wayne, also known as DJ Willmo, was hosting the drive timeslot of 3:00pm till 6:00pm and Cadet Kobhi was on hand to see just what it takes to host a radio show.

“It was really good. I got to see how Wayne records a radio show and it was a lot different to what I thought it would be. Plus, I got to talk on the radio and help with the weather forecast. The music was very cool too” said an excited Kobhi.

“I enjoyed having Kobhi in the studio. He was a great little helper on the show” commented Wayne.

Willmington’s career in radio has been an amazing journey that began back in school, when he started a radio station broadcasting over the PA system as a student at Penrith High School! He was also a founding member of Penrith Community Radio.

Wayne started Vintage FM in January 2009 and is launching another new FM station very soon.

So, now that Kobhi has spent some time spinning the vinyl with one of the radio industry’s best, does he see himself as a DJ in the future?

“Having my own show playing music would be a dream” he nodded.

Man Dies Following Neighbour Dispute – Glenmore Park An investigation is underway after a man died following a dispute with a neighbour in Sydney’s west last month.

Just after 10.20pm (Sunday 16 February 2020), emergency services were called to Jarra Crescent, Glenmore Park, after reports of a physical altercation between two men.

A 44-year-old man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics but died at the scene.

Officers from Nepean Police Area Command have established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A second 44-year-old man is assisting police with their inquiries.

No further information is available at the time of print.

What Sort Of Exercise May Help Keep Your Joints Fit Strong & Young?

A recent patient with extreme right hip pain sparked this article. They’d always had strong legs, because their job, for years, required continual strenuous daily leg exercise, but within a reasonably short time after retirement left hip pain commenced, leading to replacement. Now, 2 years later, debilitating right hip pain began requiring a walking stick. Orthopaedic examination revealed both significant leg muscle volume loss and right hip deterioration.

It’s tempting to conclude, that years of hard work wore out the hips. From a different perspective, one might conclude that previous years of hard exercise staved off joint deterioration, and work cessation led to, loss of leg muscle volume and joint deterioration. I lean towards the later view.

The patient’s post-retirement exercise pattern included walking regularly and work around their acreage property.

So, what constitutes exercise to maintain joint strength and function?

The Lambert etal (2008) study shows us. Three 90min sessions weekly for 12 weeks with 1.

15 min of flexibility exercises, 2.

20–30 min of aerobic exercise, 3.

30–40 min of weights, 4.

15 min of balance exercises. improved participants physical function. The aerobic exercises

included • treadmill walking, • step-ups & stair climbing, • stationary cycling, • stairmaster starting at - 75% of peak heart rate, progressed over weeks to 80-90%.

Weight-training included squats, leg presses, knee extensions / flexions, seated rowing, upright rowing, seated chest press, biceps curl, and triceps extensions, starting with 1-2 sets at - 65% of one-repetition maximum (1RM), allowing 8–12 repetitions per set. Exercise volume was gradually increased to 2-3 sets at - 80% of 1RM, 6–8 repetitions per set.

This program incorporates endurance, strength, flexibility, balance, at stress-levels that continually test participant’s abilities to complete the exercise, yet are within their physical capabilities. Such exercise generates hormonal signals that drive physiology to build/maintain strong yet flexible tissues, staving off muscle & joint deterioration. Many of us walk around the block or work around the yard but these activities, though pleasant and of some benefit, likely do not present nearlyenough stress-challenges to build/maintain strong enough joints and musculature into old age.
