Blake’s Amazing Artwork Glenmore Park’s Blake Raymond has been recognised as a high performing visual arts student, with his artwork chosen to be a part of the prestigious ArtExpress 2018 art exhibition, whilst also being awarded the S&S Creativity Student Award.

Blake’s artwork titled ‘Flight_24/7’ depicts Little Hartley via an overlook through the medium of lino carving and printmaking and was nominated through its submission whilst he was studying Visual Arts in his HSC at St Dominics College last year.

The talented artists work was chosen by the curators of the NSW Art Gallery, Orange Regional Gallery and Manning Regional Gallery to be shown in ArtExpress. Why Should We Swimming Lessons?

I’ve been speaking with lots of parents in the weeks since Christmas and since school went back and there seems to a common theme for us all – we have too much to do, not enough time to do it all, and not enough cash to stretch to cover everything all the time! Life is, quite simply, busy and expensive. So, under these circumstances, why should we continue to prioritise swimming lessons?

Convenience. No matter the ages of your children, with a little planning, you can usually arrange your children’s lessons all on the same day, at the same time. We run lessons 7 days a week, at 2 locations.

Less than the price of a cup of coffee per day.

Swimming lessons are great value for money when considering the skill they teach our children. We also offer discounts for multiple children and/or multiple lessons to make lessons more affordable for families and for children needing to catch up.

Swimming lessons improve learning outcomes at school.

Research conducted by Griffith University over four years has concluded that children who swim, demonstrate more advanced cognitive and physical abilities than other children.

The children tested were anywhere from six to 15 months ahead of the normal population when it came to cognitive skills, problem solving in mathematics, counting, language and following instructions.

Fitness and fun.

In a world where technology is becoming more and more prevalent, and the government is now offering rebates to encourage physical activity in children, it’s increasingly important to continue to motivate our kids to be active and have fun the old fashioned way – have you ever seen a child not having fun splashing about in the pool on a hot day? For me, this is a part of my childhood that I’ve continued thorough to adult life! Swimming is fun!

Swimming can, quite literally, save your child’s life. In my mind, all the other reasons to swim, however compelling,

are peripheral to this fact. Of the 291 people who drowned in Australia last year, 41 were children under the age of 14. 41 families lost a child. These deaths were mainly in swimming pools in the 0-4 age group, and rivers, creeks and streams in the 5-14 year old age group, and were largely attributed to lack of supervision for the younger children and lack of a basic level of swimming skills and water safety knowledge in the older age group. Learning to swim from 6 months is a must in Australia and the only responsible choice for parents.

And if your child can swim, why continue? There are lots of reasons, including improving technique, cross training for other sports, maintaining fitness, participating in swim club and swim meets, and the personal discipline of the sport of swimming.

Swimming is for everyone, all year round, and for life.

“Knott” the Sitters Club Is a family organisation that sits kids in their own homes. It makes an evening out less expensive for families if they don’t have to pay a sitter in money, only in hours.

International Women’s Day

Q & A with Elise Webber

International Women’s Day is held annually on March 8th. It is a time to reflect on and celebrate the achievements of women in our community.

We interviewed our own local inspirational woman, Elise Webber, mother of ‘Bobby the Brave’ and advocate for the eradication of child abuse.

Who is in your family?

My husband Barry, 8-year-old daughter Olivia Webber and 4-year-old son Bobby Webber.

What do you like the most about living in Glenmore Park?

We moved to Glenmore Park in 2016 and what I like most about living here is the strong community spirit that instils everything I wanted for my young family - safety, compassion and support. I also have amazing neighbours.

What do you do for a living?

I am a full-time carer for my son Bobby who is a quadriplegic.

I have recently enrolled to complete my Diploma of Makeup and my aspiration for this year is to complete my study and commence writing a book to share my family’s triumph over adversity.

Are you part of any community activities or organisations?

Yes. I am a strong advocate for eradicating child abuse and have actively participated in bringing awareness to the child protection unit at Westmead Children’s Hospital. This was through the Coffee for Kids Foundation which was initiated through the RFS (Rural Fire Service).

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

To me, it’s celebrating women’s achievements in the 21st Century paving the way for equality of our future generations.

Who inspires you?

Many women inspire me but the one who inspires me most is my mum, Linda. She raised my siblings and I, worked full-time and struggled to pay the mortgage ensuring we had a home to live in. We didn’t have the most opulent childhood, but she always ensured we had what we needed. My mother inspired me to never give up hope, as long as there is somewhere to sleep and a table of food - we will be fine. Local Sporting Honoured

Champions

Local sporting champions from disciplines ranging from baseball to pole vaulting have been honoured at a special afternoon tea and presentation ceremony.

Each was awarded a $500 grant under the Local Sporting Champions program to assist with the cost associated with representative sport.

Federal Member for Lindsay, Emma Husar congratulated the local school students on their achievements and presented each with a Lindsay Sporting Award.

“These young people have not only shown great skill in their chosen sport,” Ms Husar said. “They have demonstrated strength and determination beyond their years.”

“It’s a privilege to be able to support them and their families in this way,” she said.

“Our community has much to be proud of. These young and extremely talented sportspeople have worked incredibly hard and it is wonderful to be able to assist them in achieving their goals.

“I’d also like to acknowledge the amazing local coaches across a range of sports that encourage and support them,” Ms Husar said.

“And we all know how important it is to have family support.

Elite sports mean long days and nights training. I take my hat off to all these remarkable young people and their families.

Native Garden Workshop Registrations are open to book your place in Council’s free Native Garden Workshop at Floribunda Community Centre, 1 Floribunda Avenue, Glenmore Park between 10 am-1pm on Sunday 18 March.

Council has joined forces with Sustainable Education Australia to bring this workshop to the residents of Penrith.

Penrith Mayor John Thain is excited by what residents could learn about biodiversity and gardening by attending the workshop.

“The workshop will show how to plant a variety of native flora in your garden to provide the perfect habitat for a variety of insects, birds and other small animals,” Cr Thain said.

“The right food and shelter creates an ecological balance for our native birds, animals and insects.

Adriana Crowned the 2017 Australian Supermodel of the Year Local model Adriana Maltese has been announced the 2017 Australian Supermodel of the Year, during the finals of the high-profile competition held in Bali last month.

She beat a strong contingent of models from all over the country to claim the title as the Mainstream Winner of the competition.

“I was an emotional wreck when I was announced as the winner! I was completely overwhelmed, and it was totally unexpected” said Adriana to the Glenmore Gazette.

The grand final of the Australian Supermodel of the Year was held in the final week of the competition, where the finalists performed three runways and were also judged based on undertaking photo shoots and interacting with all. After the three walks had been done, the contestants were sent back out with Adriana announced the winner in front of the adoring crowd.

As winner of the competition, Adriana will be sent to Bali throughout the year to undertake various modelling assignments on the exotic island.

“This competition has already provided me with many opportunities. I am now taking these opportunities as they come and to see where they lead me! Throughout the year, I hope to juggle both university and modelling” Adriana explained.

Adriana has learnt a lot throughout this journey and she has this advice for any aspiring models who are considering entering the competition this year, “Remain resilient when facing setbacks as it’s a common occurrence. Always put yourself up for a challenge, show dedication and of course be yourself”.

Mars Bar Cheesecake

We specialize in : Candles,Bombonieres, Chocolates, Thank you favors & Gift Hampers for all occasions ƪWeddings / Engagements / memorial ingredients 250g plain chocolate biscuits 150g butter, melted 2 tablespoons brown sugar 20g butter, extra 300ml thickened cream 50g milk eating chocolate, chopped finely 3 teaspoons gelatine 1/4 cup (60ml) water 2 (250g) packets cream cheese, softened 1/2 cup (110g) caster sugar 3 (53g) Mars Bars, chopped finely preparation 1. Blend or process biscuits until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add butter process until just combined.

Press biscuit mixture evenly over base and side of 20cm springform tin, place on tray. Refrigerate about 30 minutes or until firm.

2. Meanwhile make butterscotch sauce, combine brown sugar, extra butter and 2 tablespoons of the cream in small saucepan. Stir over low heat, without boiling until sugar dissolves.

3. To make the chocolate sauce, combine chocolate and another 2 tablespoons of the cream in a separate small saucepan, stir over low heat until chocolate melts.

4. Sprinkle gelatine over the 1/4 cup water in small heatproof jug. Stand jug in small saucepan of simmering water, stir until gelatine dissolves. Cool for 5 minutes.

5. Beat cream cheese and caster sugar in a medium bowl with an electric mixer until smooth. In a separate bowl, whip thickened cream by beating with an electric mixer until soft peaks form.

6. Stir gelatine mixture into cream cheese mixture with chopped Mars Bars. Fold in cream.

7. Pour half of the cream cheese mixture into crumb crust.

Drizzle half of the butterscotch and chocolate sauces over cream cheese mixture. Pull a skewer backwards and forwards through mixture (zig-zag) to create marbled effect. Repeat with remaining cream cheese mixture and sauces.

8. Cover cheesecake. Refrigerate for about 3 hours or until set.

Ollie, Ollie, Ollie He may have only been swimming competitively for just 18 months, but Glenmore Park student Oliver Nekic is already breaking records and showing that he is a star of the future in the pool.

Oliver recently competed in the Catholic Schools Nepean Zone Swimming Carnival, held at Glenbrook Pool late last month, whilst representing St Mary Mackillop Primary School and had his most successful meet yet.

He finished first in seven events, taking home seven blue ribbons across the following events: Boys Open 100m Freestyle and 10 Years 50m Freestyle, Junior Boys 50m Backstroke, 50m Breaststroke, 50m Butterfly, 200m Individual Medley and 4x50m Relay. In the process, Oliver broke three zone records and was also named the Junior Boys Age Champion.

Last year, he made it to the NSW State Championships and Catholic Schools NSW State Swimming in the 50m Freestyle.

“Oliver started squad swimming 18 months ago and attends 5 training sessions each week. He loves the ‘competition’ side of swimming and making close friendships. He enjoys celebrating and cheering on his fellow swimmers and always striving to beat his PB” said Rachel Nekic, Oliver’s Mum. ‘Ollie’ says he would love to make it to the Commonwealth or Olympic Games one day and has his sights set on reaching State or National level this year in more than one event.

His swimming idols are Ian Thorpe and Mack Horton.

Oliver very well may join the ranks of these Australian  Oliver Nekic at the Catholic Schools Nepean Zone Swimming Carnival | Image champions of the pool one day.

‘Still A Country Show’ With So Much More!

Don’t! Stop! No! Quit! Not! Kids hear those words all day long.

And they quickly learn to tune them out.

Ever seen what kids do when an adult yells out “don’t run!” ?

They run!

So, why don’t parents phrase instructions in a positive manner?

Tell the child exactly what we want her to do? Our brains are hardwired to look for the negative, to be alert to any stress or threat, and as a result we speak in a negative way.

When parents tell the child what they want them to do, rather than what they don’t want them to do, miracles happen. Kids listen.

“Jamie, wash your hands for dinner.”

“Put your socks in the washing basket.”

“Please put your bowl in the sink.”

This is called a ‘start’ instruction. You tell the child what you want him to do.

There is also something called a ‘stop’ instruction. You use that when a child has done something wrong.

You tell the child what she has done wrong, and what to do instead.

Example: “Jamie, you are jumping on the lounge. You have to sit on the lounge.” And you wait quietly for the child to comply.

That’s all. No other words are necessary. You don’t need to give the child a 20,000 word dissertation on why jumping on the lounge is a bad idea. You don’t need to yell, cajole, bribe, or threaten. You don’t need to call him ‘bad’ or ‘naughty’. You don’t need to mention that you have caught him jumping on the lounge every day since he was two years of age. Save your words. Paying lots of attention to mistaken behaviour will guarantee that you will get more off it.

With consistency, your child will get it. If he doesn’t comply you can issue a consequence that is related to the mistaken behaviour. In the example above, it would be to sit on the floor for a few minutes. Taking the iPad away isn’t related to jumping on the lounge.

Blake has plans to continue his art as a hobby in the future, with the possibility of incorporating it into his career as he pursues architecture.

Balancing Technology School has been back for over a month. Homework and sport commitments have started.

Assignments are rolling in. It’s often this time of the year we start to reflect on routines and expectations, especially when it comes to our children. Is my child getting enough exercise and sleep? Is he studying enough? Is she overusing technology and always glued to her phone or tablet? How do I ensure my child is living a balanced life when technology is embedded in our everyday lives?

It is no secret that technology is changing, and has changed, the way that we live. We rely on it to communicate, play, pay bills and work. We even use it in our schools to aid learning.

Educational settings are adorned with Interactive White Boards, laptops, tablets and computers. Some schools participate in the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program, use web-based learning platforms to set tasks and encourage self-directed learning and virtual interaction between students and teachers. Technology in educational settings allows for greater global connection, instant access to information and prepares students for their ever-changing digital future. There is no denying this fact.

Although technology usage in schools certainly has massive benefits, there are many concerns about the detrimental effects technology can have on children. Childhood obesity, the degradation of social skills and shift in family dynamics, bullying and accessing inappropriate content are all serious and valid fears held by parents and experts in this field. It is imperative that we remain vigilant and considered when allowing children the use of technology and set boundaries and rules for usage that are reasonable. Schools already have these policies in place.

What is reasonable, you ask? Well, it is not just about minimising the time spent using technology but rather what that time is spent doing. You need to ask yourself if the digital interaction is adding value to your child’s life in some way. If the answer to that question is yes, then it is most likely an activity that would sit comfortably within the ’acceptable’ parameters for your family. If technology usage is causing changes in behaviour, lack of adequate rest and physical activity or impacting on your ‘real-life’ interactions, then it is probably something that needs to be reviewed and clear guidelines put in place. The Long Weekend that Changes Everything Isn’t it good that we get four days off to reflect on the most important events of history?

Good Friday is the day we remember Jesus’ death. Easter Sunday, we celebrate the fact that this very same Jesus rose from the dead.

The incredible thing is that Jesus’ death was no accident. Jesus came into our world to die and pay for the consequences each of us deserves for not treating God as God. Jesus’ death does something quite extraordinary – it reconciles us with God. When Jesus died, his death opened the door for any person to have friendship with God; a fresh start in life when they put their trust in Him. Yet it doesn’t stop there. On Easter Sunday as we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, we celebrate the fact that Jesus smashed death! It is because of Jesus’ resurrection that you can have a certain hope of life beyond death – a life that the Bible says in the New Testament letter, written by the Apostle Peter, “that will never perish or spoil or fade”, like so many things in our world today.

The great news of Easter is that when Jesus died on the cross then three days later rose again, this changed everything. Life for you can be extraordinarily different!

Now, you can have friendship with God. Now, by making a

decision to follow Jesus, to commit your life to him, you can have hope and direction. You can know meaning and purpose. You can have peace with God. You can know the sure and certain promise of eternal life.

Autoimmune Back Issues – You May Need To Change What You Eat To Fix Your Back Most of the time when I see patients with back problems, their muscles are invariably tight shortened and inflamed to a degree.

They may also have some type of structural issue.

Therapy works to reduce tissue inflammation and lengthen affected muscles & connective tissues, allowing tissue to heal and regain normal function. Rate of improvement is an individual thing and depends on things like patient’s age, nutritional status, how long standing the condition is, and the degree of damage. Some recoveries happen quickly some a little more slowly, but most respond well.

Some people however do not respond well. There are a variety of reasons for this, but here I want to talk about one reason in particular – when people have ‘back-pain’ due to underlying gut dysfunction. Studies show that gut inflammation is common in patients with chronic spondylarthropathy (any joint disease of the vertebral column). One-quarter of the patients have early features of Crohn’s disease’.

Most people don’t realise that the intestines live adjacent to the lower back. So, if a person has immune activation in the gut, this can lead to inflammation in the lower back. A number of mechanisms are at play: 1.

Microbes can translocate from your intestines into the blood stream, and move directly into the back tissues. This happens in small numbers i.e. not enough microbes to cause sepsis but enough to cause activation of immune cells resident in back tissue, leading to inflammation and pain.

2.

Immune cells resident in the lining of the intestines also become primed and activated to defend against the microbes translocating from the intestines. These activated cells then enter the blood stream and migrate to all areas of the body. Those that move into the back tissues where inflammation is already present fan the flames and exacerbate the pain and inflammation associated with any pre-existing back issues, sometimes causing further damage. Now we have an auto immune issue.

In such cases, treatment which normally successfully removes inflammatory materials for back tissues fails to, simply because inflammatory materials build up in the tissues faster than they can be successfully cleared. This happens because there is no let-up of microbial translocation and immune cell entry into back tissues from the gut.

The only way to heal this type of situation is to make dietary alterations that lead to gut healing. This may mean carefully removing certain trigger foods for a period of time, and adding in certain foods and supplements that activate gut function. Such changes allow the gut to heal, then muscle elongation therapy can be successfully applied to remediate the patient’s back problems.

Interestingly the same or similar mechanisms underlie most if not all auto immune conditions and so, appropriate diet and lifestyle changes can help overcome many of these diseases. If you have this type of back issue or autoimmune issues in general feel free to call us at the clinic.

Give Your Soul a Holiday When we push for our dreams â&#x20AC;&#x201C; working hard and stretching ourselves to reach them â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see the expected results, we can suffer â&#x20AC;&#x153;inward fatigueâ&#x20AC;?. In his Sermon on the Mount Jesus called us to give our souls a holiday by being carefree like the birds and lilies. They donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t anxiously fuss about not having a worm to eat or a place in the sun, nor do they scheme to get more. They simply get on with things and enjoy what is provided as if they know that God is at work throughout creation. He is always caring, even for birds and flowers, so we should trust that he will care for us too.

Jesus says that when life feels anxious and unfulfilling we should hear the call to faith and look to God and his sufficiency for us so that we can find rest.

Three Ways To Execute Your Plan In 2018 Last month we spoke all about goal setting for 2018 but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen great plans hit paper then go on to collect dust.

Execution is key and it’s the single biggest differentiator between those who simply ‘survive’ and those who ‘thrive’.

Sticking with the ‘process of three’, here’s three ways to execute your plan and achieve your goals: 1. Focus 2. Clarity 3. Purpose Focus: provides the clarity to make decisions that move you toward your goals. Focus and clarity define your roadmap to achieving your most important goals. A laser-focus provides the answers to your “what” questions, “What do you need to do today to move closer to your goals?”

Clarity: let’s you say ‘no’ to actions that don’t directly support your goals. Decide your three most important actions for the day and commit to getting them done. Close out distractions by deciding to delegate, defer or dump them. Clarity provides the answers to your “how” questions, “How will you go about achieving your goals?”

Purpose: remember your why! Have a big enough purpose and it will drive you beyond belief. Commit to sharing your purpose, it creates a shared vision, a sense of connectedness and a level of engagement that breathes meaning and value into why you do what you do. Purpose answers your “why” question, “Why am

I doing this today?”

When you make the effort to consistently apply a laser-focus and remain clear by learning to say ‘no’ to distractions, you act with purpose to execute your plan and cumulatively achieve your most important goals.

As you develop the grit to stick with it, momentum builds and you create a self-reinforcing cycle of success.

New Veterinarian - Ingrid Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital would like to welcome Dr Ingrid Lliguin to the team.

Ingrid grew up in New York City, which made it difficult to have animals, however from the age of four she knew being a Veterinarian was her destiny and managed with birds and turtles until she was able to have her two beautiful dogs Olaf and Meister. Both were brought over from St. Kitts and Nevis (an island country in the West Indies) where Ingrid studied at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine and graduated with a Doctorate degree of Veterinary Medicine in 2017. She also completed a year of study at Sydney University, in addition, she completed a diagnostic imaging externship at Animal Medical

Centre in New York, pursued her interest in wildlife by working with sea lions at the Brooklyn Sea Aquarium, participating in Safaris at Kruger Park in Africa, spending time at Monarto and Adelaide Zoos, and volunteering in Spay and Neuter programs in both Africa and Costa Rica.

Ingrid is interested in all aspects of small animal medicine but most of all has a love for soft tissue and routine surgeries.

Ingrid spends her free time with her two crazy pups, visiting different beaches, going on hikes and adventures to explore as much of Australia as possible.

Veterinary Nurse - Sheridan is Back Off Maternity Leave Sheridan has been on maternity leave for 16 months and has returned to part-time nursing. She enjoyed her time off with Hayley and is very excited to return to work.

New Kennel Hand - Lachlan Lachlan joined the team in December 2017. Lachlan is currently in year 11 at high school He is really interested in agriculture, all things to do with animals and he loves playing sport.

Free Clean Up Events

Why wait until Spring to have a good clean out around the house? Autumn is the perfect time to get cleaning, especially with Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 4 March.

To help you get in the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;clean upâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; spirit, Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Waste Services are holding two free events to help you get rid of your problematic waste.

Sunday 4 March is Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Electronic Waste Drop-Off Day. You can bring your unwanted electrical items to Jamison Park between 9am â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 3.30pm and Council staff will recycle the items for you, for free.

The Chemical Drop-Off Days will be held the following weekend, on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 March. You can bring old household cleaners, paint products, pool chemicals, batteries, gas bottles and oils to Jamison Park for free and safe

disposal between 9am â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 3.30pm both days.

The Chemical Drop-Off event is hosted by Council, and run by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The entrance to both drop-off days is via Jamison Road, and Council urges all other park users to avoid this entrance on the day to avoid getting caught in the queue and traffic.

Penrith Mayor Cr John Thain said these events are great initiatives and praised residents for their commitment to recycling. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Council runs these events every year and we consistently see large quantities of waste being recycled or safely disposed of,â&#x20AC;?
