Creating Canopies – Schoolhouse Creek

Planting trees is a great way to restore habitat and support the significant vegetation which provide an important wildlife corridor for small birds, frogs, and other native animals to travel through. It’ll also help to conserve critically endangered Cumberland Plain Woodland in Western Sydney.

On-site training, tools and refreshments will be provided.

Born and bred in Penrith, Danielle has been a diehard supporter for over 30 years, and she lives and breathes everything Panthers!

“I’ve been a Panthers supporter since 1985, when my dad took my twin brother John and myself to our first game. This was back when they wore brown and white and were known as the Chocolate Soldiers” smiled Danielle.

Hundreds of games attended later, the club’s colours may have changed, however Danielle’s love for the Panthers is stronger than ever.

“My wardrobe is heavily influenced by the Panthers. I have outfits made from vintage patterns with Penrith Panthers prints.

This includes about 15 different jerseys from the retro early 80’s right up until now. Don’t get me started on the countless number of Panthers accessories too” Danielle explained.

Adding to this is Danielle’s car that is wrapped in a customized Penrith design and a painted fence at home displaying the familiar black, red, green, and yellow colours.

She describes the 2021 team as “the best I have seen” as they are led by Nathan Cleary.

“Nathan is the Prince of Penrith. He is a strategist and knows the game well. The control he has on the game is mind blowing.

He’s a great person on and off the field. A future immortal.

“The whole team are fantastic role models. Their culture and the outreach that they have with the local community is amazing” she replied.

The Panthers of old are still embedded in her childhood memories and Danielle hopes that the club’s rich history is recognised with any changes to BlueBet Stadium.

Last month, I wrote about domestic and family violence. It is a hot topic at the moment, and rightly so. Domestic and family violence causes so much disruption to people’s lives and has ripple effects for children, women, and men. 1 in 4 families are affected by DFV, and that’s probably a conservative number because so much of it goes unreported. 1 woman on average is killed each week by her partner or ex-partner.

Have you been watching See What You Made Me Do on SBS? If not, check out this 3 part documentary on SBS Demand. But watch and listen carefully in the second episode how one man minimises his violence and blames the woman. ‘If she didn’t nag me I wouldn’t have snapped and tried to strangle her.’

What? That one slipped past the editing crew. Since when did someone’s words justify you trying to kill him/her?

Have you also seen the television ads ‘Unmute Yourself’ (https://youtu.be/9g4-puN2K9o)? They are brilliant. A boy is seen being aggressive to a girl, and one parent says ‘he probably just likes her’, and the other parent reflects ‘no, there is no excuse, we have to stop him’. A fella on the sidelines at the footy tells a young male player ‘stop playing like a girl’ and an older man says ‘what’s wrong with playing like a girl?’.

And finally I come to my point of this article. There is no excuse for violence of words or actions. What we teach our little boys is how they will grow up. Don’t give them a sense of entitlement, that just because they are boys they can do as they please. If they grow up rough they will be rough men, and it might be your daughter or daughter-in-law that they will be treating rough. Don’t blame the victim, ‘if she didn’t do this, he wouldn’t do that’. Teach your children that they can’t control anybody else but themselves and they alone are responsible for their thoughts, words, and actions.

I have had the opportunity and honour to observe a Men’s Behaviour Change group recently. There are a few organisations around (BaptistCare, Relationships Australia) that offer individual counselling and groupwork for men who use coercion, control, and violence with their partners and in their families. These programs are supportive and gentle, but they do challenge the men to take responsibility for their own behaviour. What I have learnt from the men in the groups is don’t grow your boys up rough. Acknowledge that they have feelings, and allow them to express their feelings. Grow them up as humans, regardless of gender.

We all have the power to end violence.

Visual Arts Students Excel at Glenmore Park High School

ARTEXPRESS has been showcasing the best artworks created by NSW HSC Visual Arts students for over 36 years. The 2021 exhibition, ‘Threads of Connection’, highlights the importance of connecting through art. 59 artworks were selected from all the HSC Art works submitted in 2020. The range of subjects enables audiences from all ages to connect to the dreams, fears and hopes of the artists.

Kristina Santucci, Glenmore Park High School HSC 2020 Dux, completed her HSC during the COVID pandemic. Kristina’s artwork `The Event Horizon’ was selected to be displayed in the ARTEXPRESS collection at both The Newington Armory, Sydney Olympic Park and then at the exhibition in Tamworth.

Kristina stated, “Visual Arts was my best mark. I probably would not have got into Medical Science at the University of NSW without it. It was one of my favourite courses”.

For students wanting to get a Band 6, Kristina recommended that you should “plan your body of work early, don’t switch between ideas so you have enough time to work on it”.

Kristina received a scholarship to UNSW, having achieved the highest ATAR at Glenmore Park High School in 2020. Kristina is loving university and her chosen course of study. She advised students choose subjects they enjoy “because the joy helps you put in your best effort”.

Glenmore Park High School has also recently had 3 Year 11 students, Brianna Agius, Nawaab Qaumi and Carrisse Irving selected for the 2021 National Art School HSC Intensive Course. The students were nominated for their skillset and commitment to their Visual Art practices and studies, showing consistently high levels of excellence in Visual Arts throughout Years 10 and 11. r

Axe Marks the Spot for Jackson At just 10 years of age, Glenmore Park schoolboy Jackson O’Mara is already making a name for himself in the world of competitive woodchopping, following in his family’s footsteps.

The talented youngster started woodchopping with his father at 2 years of age, before taking up the sport competitively when he was 6.

Woodchopping runs in the family, with Jackson’s great uncle John Startin a champion woodchopper. His father Luke O’Mara and grandfather Stephen O’Mara are still woodchoppers.

Since competing, Jackson has travelled all over the state and as far away as Queensland.

“Jackson has already competed in many shows. There’s the Hawkesbury Show, Penrith Show, Luddenham Show, St Ives Show, Bathurst Show, and the Jamison Hotel Australia Day Woodchop.

He has also competed in interstate shows such as the Caboolture Show, Redcliffe Show and the Kilcoy Show. These are just to name a few” explained Rachael O’Mara, Jackson’s mother.

Because of his age, the only event that he can compete in is the ‘underhand’. This is where the log sits in a cradle, they stand on the log and swing the axe from above the head into the log between their legs.

Jackson has already begun training for the Sydney Royal Easter Show and his goal is to compete there in 2023 at the age of 12.

“He enjoys the crowd cheering him on and the people he gets to meet at each show, along with the woodchopping community that he gets to catch up with. Vale John Moyle

The family of John Moyle wish to announce the sad passing of their beloved grandfather at the age of 102.

John was born in Albany and later moved to Sydney. He was married to Myrtle Moyle (dec 1992) and had 3 children, 8 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren.

He managed a plaster factory and was a plasterer in Albany, before moving to Sydney. Whilst here, John managed Stramit Board, then Formica Perth and Sydney. He then followed on to Papua New Guinea where he worked for LendLease in a hardware store/factory on Kieta. Finally, John retired back to Sydney from Port Moresby.

“My most proud memory of my grandfather was him laying wreaths at Lone Pine and Anzac Cove at Gallipoli in 2011” said Angela Troy, John’s granddaughter.

“He had many tales regarding his life in Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea” Angela added.

John was an avid volunteer, particularly during the last decade of his life that was spent in the Northern Territory. He was a volunteer tour guide at the War Museum in Darwin and often was Santa at the local shops.

How to Stretch Successfully – But Without Pain To stretch effectively, you should pretty much do the opposite of what most people do. That is, you should: 1.

Stretch regularly (just once-twice a week will do), 2.

Spend time on each stretch, 3.

Use a slow deliberate stretching technique, 4.

Avoid any pain, 5.

Relax into the stretch, 6.

Use regular and deep breathing, 7.

Never force the stretch Technique: For a left hamstring stretch, bring your left leg onto a table (10-15cm higher than your knees; higher if you’re very flexible). Keep your left leg straight and draw your left foot toward you. Bend forward at the hip keeping your back straight.

See if you can touch your toes or stretch past them, then come up/out of this ‘test’ stretch.

Now bend your left arm at the elbow. Keeping your back straight, bend forward at the hip again till your left elbow rests on your left thigh and your back remains straight. Slide your elbow toward your left foot, until you feel a good stretch in your

left hamstrings (but no pain). Relax, breathe in and out deeply and regularly, wait until the stretch completely subsides and you’re comfortable at this position (may take 30 – 60 seconds, just be patient). Now slide your elbow further forward along your thigh until you again feel a strong stretch, but no pain.

Stop there, repeat the same deep relaxed breathing until you cannot feel the stretch. Continue this for 4-6 cycles (more if you like). Once you’re happy with the number of stretching cycles you’ve completed, test how far your left fingers/hand moves past your toes now. You should find that you have significantly greater range of motion in your left hamstring than when you started. Now repeat the same for your right hamstrings. Note: people with lower back issues should stretch their hamstrings lying down to avoid straining their back.

This technique allows you to gently fatigue the hamstring muscle-spindles. It takes a little more time, but only needs to be done once a week, and is likely to be much more successful long term and not painful!

Imagine John Lennon’s song Imagine, released in 1971 during the Vietnam War, describes a desire for a day when “the world will be as one”.

Lennon invites us to “Imagine there’s no countries…Nothing to kill or die for”. And again, “Imagine no possessions…no need for greed or hunger; A brotherhood of man”.

More than political freedom he sought freedom from the hatred, greed, prejudice, and other things that divide and hurt humanity.

Freedom from the things that leave some with plenty and others poor; some with a voice and others silenced; some accepted others despised; some beaten or abused others with blood on their hands; some winning others broken losers.

The Bible teaches God intends harmony for humans living together on earth.

Now these sorts of things might not bother or interest you, but if the COVID pandemic has taught us anything it has shown that everyone on this planet is connected in fundamental ways.

Until all countries have the pandemic under control, we can’t open national borders. This can separate families and affect businesses or whole economies.

If we are to live prosperously, others in the world find themselves as slave labour.

There are many examples of disharmony in our world.

But Lennon was more than a “peace man” hippie and refused to sweep the jarring notes of disharmony from lived human experience out of sight and out of mind. These jarring notes are obvious in war or racial discrimination but no less discordant, for example, in the way western capitalism distributes wealth. These jarring notes can be heard across the physical, social, emotional, sexual, and spiritual dimensions of human experience.

John Lennon’s song mentions “no heaven…And no religion, too” leaving him imagining a world in harmony. Will it happen magically somehow without God’s help?

We have tried social arrangements to address disharmony but with limited success. I think what is needed is the sorts of people who can live in harmony with others and are willing to address disharmony around them.

I am convinced such maturity and transformation can only be achieved by God’s work in us.

My family loves watching MasterChef. At the end of the first season, we even had a MasterChef party to watch the grand finale. I baked one of the chocolate cakes featured on the show and invited a bunch of friends over to watch it in on the big screen. The cake took ages to make but was great fun!

One of the things I noticed was the way the contestants used the word ‘hope’. It would often go like this, “it usually takes 20 minutes to cook, but I only have 5 minutes! I hope that it cooks in time”. The word ‘hope’ here is another way of just expressing wishful thinking.

There is no way you can cook something in 5 minutes that would normally take 20!

The word ‘hope’ is used often in the Bible. Instead of being ‘wishful thinking, the idea of ‘hope’ in the Bible is of confidence in the future because of what God has promised. A promise tells you something about the future. A promise from God is something you can be sure of.

God’s promise of forgiveness is more like the immunity pin in MasterChef. The immunity pin would give the bearer safety from an elimination challenge. The pin gave them confidence they could miss one elimination round. It gave them confidence they would progress a little further in the competition. Trusting God’s promise is like an eternal immunity pin that can give you real hope the future!

Rats And Mice – Caution With Rat Bait Toxicity In Your Pet

It is cold and dark, so we spend more time indoors, but you won’t be the only one seeking shelter. As temperatures drop, mice and rats head indoors to search for food, and they might pick your house for their new residence.

STOP! Most rat baits are really dangerous to pets. We have seen several rat bait ingestion in dogs recently, and with treatment they survive.

Rat bait is a silent killer. Unlike snail bait which causes violent symptoms within minutes after ingestion, most rat bait takes 3-5 days before it starts to take effect in a pet.

There are different kinds of rat bait available; the most common are anti-coagulant poisons that stop blood from clotting normally, resulting in excessive bleeding. The development of clinical signs is usually delayed for 3-7 days after the dog or cat

consumes the poison.

Common signs of rat bait poisoning may include: • Obvious external signs of haemorrhage (dependent on where the bleeding is; for example bruising, bloody faeces or urine, nose bleeds, vomiting blood).

• Lethargy • Weakness • Wobbliness • Loss of appetite • Distended abdomen from bleeding into the abdomen • Coughing, wheezing, or difficulty breathing from bleeding into the chest • Pale gums from anaemia • Bulging of eyes from bleeding behind the eyes • Sudden death with no obvious clinical signs can also occur.

If you know that your pet has eaten rat bait, contact your veterinarian immediately. Vomiting can be induced to remove as much of the rat bait as possible and treatment can be started immediately.

Rat bait kills rats, mice and your pet if they ingest them.

Tanya Davies has celebrated ten years in the NSW parliament, representing the local community of Mulgoa. Mrs Davies was elected in a landslide victory at the 2011 election with a swing towards her of 23% and since then has been re-elected at both the 2015 and 2019 elections.

Mrs Davies will contest the seat again at the 2023 State Election, saying that there is more to be done for the people of Western Sydney.

During her ten years of Parliament, Tanya Davies also served as the Minister for Mental Health, Women and Ageing in the Berejiklian Government from 2017-2019.
