Ava Grace No Footprint Too Small Turning a tragic situation into something beautiful takes courage, strength and a certain kindness that is possessed by very special people. Those qualities are precisely what makes Erin Johnson such an inspiring woman.

Local resident Johnson is the mother of four children, Ella (8), Oliver (6) and Jesse (1) and Ava Grace who was born sleeping at just 15 weeks old in March 2015.

Ava had Cystic Hygroma in utero, a severe and extremely rare condition, where abnormal growths appear that sadly result in the baby not being able to form properly.

Shortly after Ava passed away, Erin started ‘Ava Grace No Footprint Too Small’, a group of volunteers who make tiny baby clothes, nappies, blankets, hats and keepsakes. They then send them to hospitals around Australia for bereaved parents.

She said that there is a real need for clothes for babies who were born at 12-24 weeks and that the volunteers (many bereaved parents themselves) will often make a double of the outfits so that the parents can have one set as a keepsake.

“I was overwhelmed with the generosity and care we received when Ava was born and the clothes and blankets we were given for her. I wanted to make sure every bereaved parent had something to dress their precious baby in and appropriate to their size. When a baby is born and passes at such a young gestation, you can’t just go shopping for them as you will find nothing that fits a baby that is 16cm in length”.

Happy Birthday Glenmore Park Anglican Church

As followers of Jesus, it has always been our desire to make a positive impact in Glenmore Park. Jesus promises in the Bible that He came so we would have “life and have it to the full”. Consistently this has been the experience of the many people who call Glenmore Park Anglican Church (GPAC) home.

In 1992, a small but committed group of people began a regular Sunday morning Church service in a local school. From May 1994 to April 1997, the Church service was held in the “garage” of our home! It was carpeted and air-conditioned making it an ideal place for us to meet together!

In May 1997, we moved to our first Church building and by the end of that year we had two Sunday Church services. In the early 2000’s, we’d grown to four Sunday services along with many activities for adults and young people right throughout the week.

Finally, in 2011 our current Church building was completed, providing more opportunities to connect with our community.

Our annual birthday service is a celebration thanking God for the contribution of so many people who have made GPAC what it is today; a Church of around 700 adults and children.

But our Birthday Service is much more; it is an opportunity to celebrate Jesus; to celebrate the transformation, confident hope and peace Jesus brings.

These are a few comments from people who belong to our Church about why they celebrate Jesus; “I celebrate my Saviour Jesus because of His extravagant love for me. Jesus is kind, good and full of truth and grace. He surrounds me with His loving presence every moment of every day”, “Jesus is well worth celebrating because Jesus is a wonderful strength and solid rock I can depend on.

His great sacrifice and grace has given me forgiveness and a wonderful hope that I am secure in Him” and “Jesus makes sense of life.

Without Jesus life is just frustrating and ultimately meaningless”.

Youth of Glenmore Park High School and being a teenager can be exciting and terrifying!

Big things are worked out – who we are, who are our real friends, what is life about, what does my future look like? It can be lonely and stressful, but also full of fun and friendships.

The Bible has many helpful things to say to teenagers, and to parents trying hard to care for them.

For example, from the book of 1 Timothy, “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.” What wonderful, wise, affirming words for our Youth to be encouraged and live by!

It can be tough for our Youth, but Jesus offers hope and assurance. Jesus transforms lives with deep peace, joy and hope, that withstands the pressures, temptations, isolation and anxieties young people can face.

At Glenmore Park Anglican Church, caring for High Schoolers, helping them get to know Jesus and navigate life, is a big priority!

We teach Scripture and run a Christian group at Glenmore Park High. We run Friday Night Velocity Youth, weekly from 7pm - 9pm for Year 7 to 12, plus meeting with them in smaller weekly Year Groups.

We also have 7pm Night Church on Sundays – especially aimed at Youth. A big highlight is our Youth Summit Camp – coming up soon Wednesday 18th to Sunday 22nd July at Port Hacking.

Nepean Puffers And Wheezers

On the second Wednesday of every month, a group of people gather in the Kingswood Neighbourhood Centre with one thing in common: breathing. The Nepean Puffers and Wheezers was founded in 1999 to provide education and support for people with a varying range of lung conditions.

Local resident, John Ruttle has been the President for a decade now. “One of our biggest problems is the breathing” he said, “so we try to get as much info as we can on it”.

Ruttle’s journey started with a persistent cough about 17 years ago, that was diagnosed as Bronchitis. Three years later, he was diagnosed with Emphysema and then two years after that Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

The COPD Foundation describes the disease as ‘an umbrella term used to describe progressive lung diseases including emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and refractory (non-reversible) asthma’. It is characterised by increasing breathlessness and is currently incurable. The treatment focuses on management to help people live better lives.

According to a statistic by the Lung Foundation Australia, ‘almost 1 in 7 people 40 years and older have airflow limitation and more people are dying from COPD each year’.

As well as sufferers of COPD, there are people with other lung diseases and breathing problems who attend the Puffers and Wheezers group. The first two hours of the meeting usually has a guest speaker and then after that there is a ‘Lungs in Action’ exercise class that is free and run by a qualified physio.

“We try to encourage people to come along and join in, even if they only do a few little steps” said Ruttle.

One of the most important aspects of the group is the social side. It’s important to meet and bond with people in similar circumstances. There are organised bus trips to help people get out and about a bit more as well.

The next meeting of the Nepean Puffers and Wheezers is on 13 June at Kingswood Neighbourhood Centre, 19 Bringelly Road. The first month is free and it is $3 per month after that, with a $2 raffle each month as well.

District Gazette Writer Publishes First Book Even though author, Lisa Finn Powell, is the mother of five children aged 10-27, she feels a lot like a first-time mum after the publication of her new book, The Thin Time. “I’m so proud of my ‘book baby’” said Finn Powell. “It was a very long time in the making, and now I just want to share it with everyone”.

The book launched last month at 20 Mile Hollow Cafe in Woodford. It was a family affair. Her very talented children included, Grace, an actor, who gave the introductory speech; Will, a trained photographer, held his exhibition ‘Sensations of Grief’; Nick, a musician, performed his original song ‘Decade’ written for his father; Belle, wrote the foreword in the book and ten-year-old Charlie was also there in support.

Her graphic designer husband Vinnie, typeset the book and designed the cover. Finn Powell is also a musician and sang at the event.

The Thin Time is the story of a very difficult time in the author’s life, when her late husband, Paul, died and she had four young children to raise after discovering they were completely financially unprepared. It is a memoir of grief, loss, hope and the lessons she learned by listening to the wind blowing though the gum trees.

Finn Powell is an experienced writer and columnist. Her work has appeared in newspapers, magazines and on radio, television and online in the US, UK and Australia. She is a regular contributor to the District Gazette.

The Thin Time is her first book, “It’s my first born, but the second is already on the way”. She is currently working on a three-book series Accidental Expat, on her experiences as an American who immigrated to London and is now settled in Australia.

Simple Joys of Life Lately, I’ve been listening to kids. No surprise there, because I work with kids. But, I mean really listening, deep listening.

And what has astonished me is that kids are so stressed.

We, adults, think that kids have things so easy these days.

They actually don’t. They have a lot of pressure that we would never have imagined as kids School is harder. Have a good look at the school curriculum some day.

There is a lot of pressure from parents to do well at everything.

Parents have high expectations of their children. Children have high expectations of themselves. This can lead to disappointment, anger, despair, and arguments.

Kids do lots of activities after school. They have a lot of chores.

There are life lessons to learn. There is hardly any down time.

They use technology that isn’t play, it’s fast moving light and sound and information. I have seen 4 year-olds with FitBits (why does a young child need a FitBit?).

These kids don’t know how to slow down. They are uncomfortable with silence and space. They have trouble sitting still and taking slow deep breaths. They think that it’s a waste of time. They feel like they have to constantly be on the go and doing, doing, doing. They are addicted to light, speed, and sound. They get bored easily. They think too much and worry a lot about lots of stuff.

Humans weren’t built that way. We need rest. Always doing and being creates stress. The stress hormone ‘cortisol’ is a nasty piece of work. It can cause physical and mental disease. It’s no wonder that the percentage of anxiety in children is increasing.

One in four of our young people will develop clinical depression.

That’s too sad. I’m not sure that any good comes of children aged 10, 11, and 12 years saying that they are stressed and depressed.

And when they try to talk to their parents about it, the parents don’t listen and tell them how easy their lives are and how good they have it.

What are the juicy bits of life? The deep stuff – relationship, connection, talking, pondering, wondering, listening, looking, breathing. That stuff shouldn’t be saved for the annual family holiday. How can you bring the deep stuff into everyday life, and teach your kids the simple joys of life?

Education Overhaul

ABC Education, teachers and schooling have been widely discussed topics of late. The myriad of topics being avidly discussed range from funding, to curriculum reforms, to teacher’s working conditions, to student well-being and more. It seems that anyone and everyone has their opinion, and most are willing to share their thoughts with others whether it be in the staffroom, in the playground, in the paper or online.

Without any doubt the core ‘business’, for want of a better word, of schools is to grow children in knowledge, skills and abilities whilst nurturing them socially. Over the years additional responsibilities have crept to the forefront and these have, in some cases, detracted from what is essentially the bare essentials of teaching. Teachers and politicians have sometimes referred to this as the ‘crowded curriculum’.

This is not an article in which the finger is being pointed at any one person, group of people, or organisations, but this is simply a statement of what has occurred. Unfortunately, with the situation as it stands there is no quick fix solution. Now obviously some schools cope with this better than others, and that has a lot to do with the quality of leadership and the way in which they utilise funding available to them - and of course how much funding they get. You see, the myriad of hot topics currently being discussed are all interconnected, therefore it is time to look at the system as a whole and start joining the pieces together.

This is not a new suggestion, it has been initiated previously and even attempted with the Gonski Report and overhaul of the curriculum over the past few years to establish a National Curriculum. Let us hope that with all the discussions currently occurring, positive steps to ensure the best possible education for our children and our future generations will be taken by those who have the power to influence and initiate change.  The curriculum has become overcrowded | Image: www.pexels.com. Beef And Tomato Macaroni Soup

Ingredients 2 Tbsp Vegetable Oil 1 Medium Yellow Onion Finely Chopped 1 Green Bell Pepper Finely Chopped 2 Cloves Garlic Minced 1 Pound Ground Beef 2 Tsp Chili Powder 2 Tsp Dried Oregano 1 Tsp Salt 1/2 Tsp Black Pepper 2 Cans Condensed Tomato Soup 1 (15 Ounce) Can Diced Tomatoes Undrained 32 Ounces Beef Broth 4 Cups Water 2 Cups Elbow Pasta Uncooked Preparation 1. Heat the oil in a large pot. Saute onions, bell pepper and garlic until the vegetables begin to softened, about 5-6 minutes.

2. Add the ground beef, breaking it up and cooking until there is no longer any pink. Drain off excess fat.

3. Stir in chili powder, oregano, salt and pepper.

4. Add condensed tomato soup, diced tomatoes with their juice, beef broth and water. Bring to a boil.

5. Once boiling add the pasta. Reduce heat, cover and simmer until the pasta is just al dente.

A Show Not to be Missed!

The Annual Penrith Dolls, Bears, Craft and Collectables Show will be held on Sunday 17th June 2018 from 10am – 4pm. The venue will be Panthers Penrith Exhibition Marquee, Mulgoa Road in Penrith. There will be signs for directions to the Marquee.

With great support from the management and staff at the venue, there’ll be plenty of free parking, including coaches and disabled parking.

The stall displays will have lots on offer for everyone from the collector of antique, vintage and modern dolls and collectable bears and toys. This will also include handmade wooden toys made by the Nepean Men’s Shed.

The show features jewellery, reborn dolls, teddy bears, exquisite handmade craft, doll houses, doll furniture, miniatures, vintage toys, books, scrapbooking, beads, patterns, buttons, laces, candles and supplies to make your own dolls and bears.

The main feature is the famous doll and bear competition.

It will be a great day out for everyone, with refreshments available including Devonshire teas and their famous BBQ. All proceeds of the show will support the Leukaemia Foundation and a local ‘Domestic Violence’ project supporting transport for victims to a safe refuge through the Ross Hutchison Foundation.

Raffle tickets will be available at the door for $2 each or 3 for $5. Prizes include a beautiful handmade porcelain doll, handmade quilt (made and donated by the Caring Hearts Quilting Group) and collectable bear. Entry price is $6 for Adults and $2 for Children over 5 years.

Ways to Wind Down this Winter Winter has arrived and the chill in the air is not exactly conducive to having relaxing family barbecues and a nice cocktail by the pool as a means to unwind. Apart from hiding under a warm blanket and watching movies all season, what can we do to alleviate stress and pressure this frosty season?

Get Cooking What better way to warm up (and fill your tummy) than by baking some cookies, whizzing up some homemade soup or cooking a roast dinner. Not only will you enjoy it, but the family will too!

Go For A Drive A nice drive through the countryside or up to the Blue Mountains looking at the gorgeous scenery and stopping at a café or park on the way sounds divine. Put on some of your favourite music and you are good to go.

Visit A Relative Or Friend Many people can get seasonal depression and elderly people especially can feel isolated at this time of the year. Book in a visit to Grandma or an old friend and possibly combine this idea with point 1 by taking some baked goods with you to share.

Host A Dinner Party Okay so this one requires a bit of effort but it is probably the most rewarding. Invite friends, plan a menu, organise a few bottles of wine and you’re set. Depending on the crowd, you could always plan a few board games for some extra fun.

5.

Backyard Bonfire Night Well we know we can’t really have a real bonfire in New South Wales as it is against the law, but we can have a small barbecue fire-pit and toast some marshmallows in the backyard. Add some sparklers for the kids and some hot chocolate for everyone – sounds like a perfect night in.

Plastic Fantastic Unites the Community People from all over the Penrith area and beyond have united to make the lives of our homeless community a little more comfortable this winter.

Glenmore Park resident, Debbie O’Connor, and her team at The Creative Fringe set the “Plastic Fantastic” challenge earlier this year. They invited the locals to join them in creating waterproof sleeping mats from used plastic bags. These will be donated to Mama Lana’s Community Foundation.

It was during last year’s “Think Outside the Square” knitting challenge that The Creative Fringe learnt about the need for not only warm blankets but for waterproof sleeping mats for the homeless.

700 grocery bags are required to create one single mat, that’s 700 less grocery bags in landfill and waterways. This makes this challenge more than helping people in our local community, it also has a positive environmental impact.

“After last year’s over-whelming success of the Think Outside the Square challenge, we decided to not only run it again this year but to add the Plastic Fantastic challenge to the mix” said Community Manager Rienna Kroh. “Being able to help those less fortunate is very rewarding and seeing the community come together is amazing”.

The aim was to be able to donate 10 sleeping mats along with the blankets to Mama Lana’s at the start of winter. So far, they have 4 completed mats and 24 blankets. This will be an ongoing challenge throughout the year, so there is still time to get involved in this amazing cause and help bring comfort to our rough sleepers.

NSAIDs – What Does The Science Say About Their Efficacy For Chronic Pain?

This month let’s see whether NSAIDs are effective for chronic pain.

Our first study was done at Oxford University 2004. Researcher pooled results from 14 placebo-controlled trials (1502 patients) using NSAIDs to treat musculoskeletal pain (Mason 2004). The NSAID was deemed ‘efficacious’ if it could reduce pain by 50% after two weeks intake. What they found was as follows: 1. Placebo treatment achieved efficacy for 26% of patients (ranging between 7-78%) 2. NSAID treatment achieved efficacy for 48% of patients (ranging between 2 – 90%) 3. 4.6 patients had to be treated with NSAIDs for two weeks to give just 1 patient a 50% reduction in pain compared to placebo. In ‘medical speak’ this 4.6 figure is called the ‘number needed to treat’ or NNT) Now NSAIDs were clearly more effective than placebo on average. But the result still means that nearly 4 out of 5 people treated did not get even a 50% reduction in musculoskeletal pain after two weeks of treatment.

More recently, a Cochrane review (Derry 2012) of NSAIDs and osteoarthritis (34 studies, 7688 patients) showed that: 1. NSAIDS were more effective than placebo, but still 2. 6.4 patients had to be treated with topical Diclofenac solution for 8-12 weeks to give just 1 patient a 50% reduction in pain compared to placebo while, 3. 11 patients had to be treated with topical Diclofenac gel

for 8-12 weeks to give just 1 patient a 50% reduction in pain compared to placebo 4. For all topical NSAIDs combined, 10 patients (range: 7–17) needed to be treated to give 1 patient a 50% reduction in pain compared to placebo 5. Oral & topical formulations had similar efficacy (but different side effect profiles) A UK study (Underwood 2008) followed 585 patients with osteoarthritic knee pain for 2 years. Patients were prescribed either topical or oral (maximum of 1.2g) ibuprofen daily. Patients experienced no significant difference in pain scores, stiffness, movement difficulty, or any global improvement after 6, 12, 18 or 24 months of treatment. This is a remarkable result.

The Oxford University Analgesic League table lists medications in order of ability to get a 50% pain reduction in acute pain over 4-6 hours. Many medications have NNTs of 2-4 and some combination medications do better. Though they no doubt ‘take the edge off ’ short term, why does it seem that NSAID intake makes little if any difference to long term chronic pain?

The answer is simple and goes back to the function of inflammation, which is, to eliminate the initial cause of cell injury. NSAIDs and other pain medications initially reduce pain but fail to fix the cause of inflammation. The body is clever. If something isn’t right, resistance develops to NSAID intake ensuring you continue to realise something’s wrong. Thus longterm, your pain remains, unless you fix the cause.

Winter Is Coming!!!

With the cooler weather arriving, it is important to make sure your pets are kept safe and comfortable as well.

Ensure that pets, especially those who spend a lot of time outdoors, are provided with shelter that will protect them from the cool and windy weather.

Provide a warm, sheltered area for your pet to sleep in â&#x20AC;&#x201C; whether it is the laundry or inside the house as temperatures can drop dramatically during the night.

A wet coat can cause your petâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s body temperature to drop quickly, so in the case of wet weather or morning dew, keep your pets as dry as possible. Towel dry them after walks or when they come inside the house.

Consider a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;winterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; haircut for pets who are groomed often, by not having their hair cut too short. Pets who have a short coat or are groomed often may also need a jacket or coat to help keep them warm.

Take extra care with pets who are really young or really old, as they may need extra assistance in regulating their body temperature.

Heaters and open fires can be dangerous to pets with the risk of overheating or burning. Ensure you supervise your pets, provide barricades or safety screens.

Along with frosty weather, comes the dreaded cold and flu. Most human drugs used to relieve our symptoms are toxic to pets.

These include, but are not limited to, Paracetamol (Panadol), Ibuprofen (Nurofen), Phenylephrine and Pseudoephedrine (Cold and Flu tablets). Keep your medications out of reach of your pets. Contact the veterinarian if your pet ingests human medications.

Be Simply Yourself From the time we are born, and dressed in designer baby-wear, society is defining who we should be.

To be loved, to be significant, to matter, to succeed you must… look like this, have this sort of career and so on. These (sometimes unspoken) “you musts” commonly drive us to be somebody we are not, and can strangle our souls!

Let me tell you a story about Nicolas. He thrived as a young kid – the world was his oyster. He was happy, achieved in sport and academically. But these are surface things. More importantly, in his soul he was free. The world was a good, hopeful and happy place. To use the illustration of a car engine, the engine of his soul “ran clean” (ie. there was no smoke – when car engines blow smoke out the exhaust it points to problems with the engine).

In his teens Nicolas struggled with chronic fatigue. More importantly the engine of his soul was burning black smoke. He was fearful and angry. He couldn’t find peace.

His mother insightfully didn’t push Nicolas to perform, but instead said things to him that released him from the “you musts”. The beginning of love is to let those we love be simply themselves. In this way Nicolas’ mum helped him untangle all the compulsions society was throwing at him so he could be simply himself - what we are before fear or greed or lust or desperate want gets into the engine of our souls like spoiling grit.

Nicolas said, “I feel my soul within me running cleaner in those moments. I feel a sense the sky’s the limit, as if who I simply am is waking up and life is hopeful and happy again.”

The voices calling us to be this and that are very loud. But the Bible teaches that through Jesus Christ you can experience God’s love, with the power to release you to be simply yourself, and to find your best life.

Time to pull out your winter woollies, rug up and keep warm as the aroma of fresh home-made soup wafts through the home.

On page 8, you will find one of my winter go-to recipes. I’ve already made this a handful of times this year, such a simple yet hearty winter warmer.

Sadly, we farewelled my Mum last month. It was the single hardest thing I have ever had to face in my adult life.

I live on knowing she is no longer suffering, and can now breathe easy. I pay tribute and raise awareness of her courageous battle on page 4.

Friends have been an amazing tower of strength. If I’ve learned anything during this incredibly difficult time, it would be how to become a better friend. To be there unconditionally when times are tough (coincidentally, this was exactly who my Mum was). For these amazing friends I am truly grateful. You know who you are.
