The world isn’t the same. My wife, Beth, is a school teacher and she has written a song for her class to sing as they return to school. It was set to the tune of the ‘Cup Song’ from the movie, Pitch Perfect. My seven-year-old daughter was helping write the song. She wrote the best line: “when coronavirus came, nothing was the same.” As a seven-year-old she nailed it. Her world had changed.

We are all learning to live the reality that the world has changed. The only means we have of defending against the virus is to reduce the risk of being exposed to it. That means less interactions with others, physical distancing and selfisolation. The world is a more threatening place. As things go back to ‘normal’ there is always the risk the virus is lurking in the

background, just ready to pounce when you shake someone’s hand or clear your throat.

However, as big as coronavirus is, there is something bigger that changed our world. Instead of the fear and uncertainty that coronavirus brings, Jesus’ resurrection brings hope and peace with God. His resurrection from the dead changes everything. It means that death isn’t the end and that his claim to be the Son of God is something to be taken seriously.

For all the changes that my daughter has experienced, the song reminded me of one thing that hasn’t changed. We love laughing together around the dinner table. The whole family decided to sing the song too. We sat around the dinner table singing and laughing. It was fun. Some things haven’t changed.

Control and Our Soul Our society, I think, is based around maintaining control. All of us want to be in control of our lives because when we are not in control the unpredictability of things robs our souls of hope. For this reason, we might prioritise earning money or exercising to maintain control.

I was speaking recently with a young couple in their late twenties who were not coping with the COVID-19 lockdown at all. I suspect one of the reasons for this is that unlike those who are older, they had not experienced any sort of challenge like this in their lives before. They had not been through a great depression and were too young to be really affected by the recession in 1991. The SARS outbreak in 2003 was small compared to the corona virus pandemic and brought few restrictions apart from screening at the airport. But now for the first time, control of their lives was under threat.

We can maintain control over many things by earning and exercising, but it does not work when something like COVID-19 hits us.

There are things we cannot control. Have you ever tried controlling the state of your soul - containing sadness and fear or creating happiness?

Many in the world live out on this edge where control is shaky all the time, and we should be thankful to God that we live in such an amazing country. However, COVID-19 has reminded us that life can challenge control even in societies like ours.

The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ is in control of the universe and that he invites us into a relationship with himself to find love and security. So, in the face of COVID-19 and the threats to our sense of control we can seek a relationship with Jesus Christ to secure our souls. A simple prayer with an open heart will invite Him to meet with you and strengthen you inwardly r

Inclusive Place to Play on the Way for Glenmore Park Children and families in Glenmore Park will have a fantastic new place to relax and play, thanks to $40,000 in funding to upgrade the Carriageway Playspace from the NSW Government.

Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies said Penrith City Council was one of 30 successful councils to benefit from the latest round of funding from the Everyone Can Play initiative that helps create inclusive playgrounds across NSW. “The funding will help deliver an improved and modernised playground at the Carriageway Reserve in Glenmore Park that will feature a new play equipment, and seating, as well as improved pathways and landscaping” Tanya Davies said.

“Inclusive playgrounds provide wonderful spaces for families and friends of all ages and abilities to play, relax and connect, and this funding will help make our community even more inclusive”.

Penrith Mayor, Ross Fowler OAM thanked the NSW Government for its investment in the City and said Council was committed to providing modern, safe, and accessible play areas for residents and visitors.

“Playgrounds and open spaces are vital to the health and wellbeing of our communities” Ross Fowler said.

“We are excited to be replacing old, outdated playgrounds to meet the needs of our current and future residents”.

Designed in consultation with the community, these projects are part of a five-year, $125 million program of capital projects identified in Council’s recently released Sport and Recreation Strategy.

As part of the Strategy, more than 25 local playgrounds will be upgraded across the Penrith City Council area.

“The plan meets our aim to provide residents in established suburbs with up-to-date facilities while at the same time ensuring sports fields, playgrounds and parks are available in new areas as our population grows” Cr Fowler said.

The Carriageway Playspace will be closed during construction and work is expected to be complete by the end of July.

Best in Show: Victoria Celebrates 40 Years What started out as a love of dogs as a child has turned into a successful career for local dog enthusiast Victoria Masterfield who this year celebrates 40 years of showing dogs.

Victoria will reach the amazing milestone later this year. Her career has taken her all over the world, where she has won many awards since the 1980’s. She also owns a small business, Comb and Collar – Grooming

by Victoria.

“My parents showed dogs since I was young, and I grew up with a love of dogs. I first started showing dogs when I was a teenager. This shows my age, but I have been showing dogs for almost 40 years. I specialise in American Cocker Spaniels and currently own 7 dogs. This includes 4 that live with me and I am in partnership with 3 more with my friends” explained Victoria to the Glenmore Gazette.

With so many highlights over the years, Victoria has won Best in Show awards and she is driven to win a very special one at home.

“Over my 40 years, I have won many Best in Show awards. My most memorable is the Dogs NSW Spring Fair, where it was the first time in history for an American Cocker Spaniel to win the show. My dream is to win Best in Show at Sydney Royal Easter Show” Victoria smiled.

Showing dogs can take months of preparation for the big day. Once it arrives, it is often a long day that can be quite rewarding at the end.

“The day starts early, prepping the dogs for the show. Washing, blowdrying, and scissoring in the morning before heading to the show early to get a good spot ringside and near my friends. This is followed by a quick blow-dry and scissoring before heading into the ring. If all goes well, I will show the dog 3 times. This is against it’s breed, then against other breeds, then fingers crossed the judge likes the dog and I win Best in Show” she said.

With restrictions being lifted and the world slowly returning to normal since the coronavirus pandemic, Victoria is looking forward to returning to the ring.

“I feel honoured and privileged to show dogs. I love travelling to places I have never seen, meeting new people, catching up with friends, being with my dogs and hopefully winning prizes” she ended.

Students at Fernhill School in Glenmore Park now have an opportunity to enjoy reading at home, thanks to the Books for Home Program offered by Dymock’s Children’s Charities which has seen the local school receive an amazing $5,000 worth of books.

The program has meant that every student at the school has received 3 books each, with a total of 309 books provided to them.

“Dymock’s Children’s Charities partnered with Dymocks George Street, who offered $2,500 from recent fundraising for our school. The George Street Dymocks store raises funds through rounding up at the till, selling tote bags and Books for Kids Week in August. Dymocks Children’s Charities matched this amount, allowing for $5,000 worth of books to be provided to our students” said Naomi Suffield of Fernhill School.

Being a new school, Fernhill School was also without a library until recently. That was until a post on Facebook, which saw the local community come together with an outpouring of donated books to help fill the shelves.

“We are incredibly grateful for our community’s generosity.

One person who happened to see this post connected us with Dymocks Children’s Charities who then offered the program to our school” explained Naomi.

The books that were received from the Books for Home Program were grouped according to target age. From here, they were selected based on matching the interests of the students. This included books such as One Very Tired Wombat

by Renee Treml, The Day the Crayons Came Home by Drew Daywalt and The Story of Rosy Dock by Jeannie Baker.

“At Fernhill School, we have a strong focus on developing literacy skills as we know that developing these skills will have lifelong benefits. We know our students love spending time exploring books within the classroom. Glenmore Park Scores an Upgrade

Sports in Glenmore Park have received a major boost, with the NSW Government announcing funding to upgrade sporting facilities in the local area.

Ched Towns Reserve in Glenmore Park will receive $1.66m from the Greater Sydney Sports Facility Fund, and an additional $565k from Penrith City Council, for a complete knockdown and rebuild of the amenities block.

Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies said this funding is vital for the Glenmore Park community to help promote participation in sport.

“The sporting clubs that rely on the amenities block at Ched Towns Reserve know first-hand how desperately a new block is needed. I am pleased to announce this funding will provide a complete knockdown and rebuild” Tanya Davies said.

“By renovating and renewing local sport infrastructure we are promoting a healthy, active and inclusive environment for the community and sporting groups who rely on this facility”.

Penrith City Council Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said local sporting clubs, associations and players are very appreciative of the facilities that this funding provides.

“Penrith Council has committed to a full program of works to its sports and recreation facilities and I’m excited the NSW Government is partnering with Council to provide these upgrades”.

“The valued contribution to sport in the Penrith region by the NSW Government’s Greater Sydney Sports Facility Fund and the work by Tanya Davies, Member for Mulgoa in securing this funding allows our community to enjoy high quality sports infrastructure in their local suburbs” Cr Fowler said.

The new amenities block will benefit local sporting groups and the community by providing a modernised and purposebuilt facility.

The NSW Government’s Greater Sydney Sports Facility Fund (GSSFF) has seen almost $40 million awarded to 22 projects across Greater Sydney to improve the quality and quantity of sports infrastructure.

Most humans like attention. Little humans particularly so.

They like attention so much that they don’t mind whether it’s negative or positive. They would much prefer positive attention as it is unpleasant to be in trouble all the time and not very good for one’s long-term mental health. But if they don’t get any of the good stuff, they will take the negative any day of the week.

But here is the trick…

40 years of research tells us that if you want to encourage positive behaviours in your child, you give more attention to positive behaviours. Energy flows where attention goes.

If you are paying lots of attention to ‘naughty’, you are going to get a bundle of ‘naughty’.

What would you prefer? Positive or negative behaviour?

Feed the positive with descriptive praise, connection, smiles, hugs, thumbs up, high fives – lots of positive attention.

So, what do you do about the negative behaviours? One strategy is called ‘planned ignoring’.

You ignore the minor negative behaviours. Completely withdraw your attention – no talking, no eye contact. As soon as (the split second) your child starts behaving in a positive way, you bring your attention back to your child.

No need for lectures or yakking. Chances are your child knows what he or she is doing. Truly, it’s that simple, pay attention to the positive and withdraw your attention from the negative.

However, if your child is exhibiting serious mistaken behaviour, planned ignoring is not the right tool for the job.

Happy First Anniversary in the New Premises Can you believe that it has been one year since we moved premises to 49 Wentworth Road, Orchard Hills? Wow, time flies!

We have settled in well and are loving the new premises.

Our new premises are so beautiful with 3m ceilings, double brick throughout, green bull nosed verandahs and lots of open space on the acreage. You will not believe how big the premises are!

Your dog will have so much fun!

We even have a cat waiting room now, which is separate from the dogs, so your cat will be less stressed.

Unfortunately due to the Coronavirus crisis, we are still performing contactless consults, with the nurse bringing the pet into the hospital and the client waiting in the car. The veterinarians are

calling the client to discuss any health issues and to discuss the treatment plans.

The government restrictions are easing, however, as we work so closely together inside the hospital, we cannot be more than 1.5m apart from each other and if one of our staff becomes sick, then we will all become sick and we will have to close the business for 2 weeks or more. We have come so far, and we would hate to go backwards. We cannot wait for the Coronavirus crisis to be over!

This Winter, Deputy Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell said that its important residents remember to be careful when using heaters and fireplaces and electric blankets.

“Don’t put your family at risk this Winter. Check that all your appliances are switched off and ensure that open fires have been fully extinguished. If we all do our bit to minimise the risks in our home, we can all stay safer together” he said.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services, David Elliot said, with families spending more time at home than ever before it is crucial, we prepare our homes.

“FRNSW do a great job in keeping our community safe, now it is our time as NSW residents to do the right thing by our families, listen to the experts and ensure our homes are safe”.

Some simple steps the community can take include: • Never ever leave cooking unattended

• O nly working smoke alarms save lives - test your smoke alarm today • Keep everything one metre away from your heater • Do not overload your power boards with appliances like heaters and electric blankets • Strong fire screens should be set up in front of open fires • Turn off your electric blanket at night • Do not use outdoor heating and cooking equipment inside your home. Can my Diet Contribute to Osteoarthritis (OA)?

Vitamin K is a fat-soluble nutrient that appears to have a role in OA (Shea 2014). In normal healthy adults, adequate daily intake is only 120 micrograms for men and 90 micrograms for women. Yet vitamin K insufficiency or deficiency is quite common in western populations: • 8-31% of normal healthy adults • ~50% in people suffering hypertension, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular or chronic kidney disease • 97% of older subjects taking warfarin A recent publication found people with: 1.very low blood vitamin K were nearly a. twice as likely to have articular cartilage damage & b. just under 3 times as likely to have meniscus damage progression after 3 years compared to people with sufficient vitamin K 2.higher blood levels of protein whose concentration reflects lower vitamin K status, had higher odds of: a. meniscus damage, b. osteophytes, c. bone marrow lesions, d. subarticular cysts 3.very low blood vitamin K levels were more likely to have worsening of articular cartilage and meniscus damage Osteoarthritis is a disease not just of cartilage but of the underlying bone. Several vitamin K-dependant proteins are

present in cartilage and bone. They have weird names such as: 1. MGP 2. GAS-6 3. TGFBI 4.

BGP or OC All are made by bone & cartilage cells. Each helps keep bone and cartilage healthy. The last step in the production processes of all these proteins requires vitamin K. If vitamin K is low, each of the proteins is still made (except for the last step), but most don’t function. Thus bone & cartilage maintenance suffers, resulting in increased risk of OA over time.

So, why is vitamin K deficiency so common?

• western diets typically contain foods that are poor sources of vitamin K, • the vitamin is difficult to absorb from our typical vitamin K rich foods such as spinach, • we eat few truly fermented foods such as Natto where vitamin K is high and absorbable • chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract are common & decrease absorption • medicaments such as warfarin significantly lower vitamin K levels

July has arrived and it is bitterly cold. As I write this, my feet are snug in slipper sox by the heater.

We are making slow progress, one day at a time, with the relaxing of restrictions due to COVID-19. This month sees the reinstatement of team sports, and increased numbers in group gatherings with steady increases at pubs, clubs and restaurants.

We’ve also witnessed some setbacks in neighbouring States, which has caused some trepidation in further releasing of restrictions.

If you’re anything like me, I’ve used the time in isolation wisely by working on mini projects that I seemingly ‘never’ had time for before this.

Coming out of time in ‘lockdown’ sees my freshly renovated caravan at the ready for many a trip, particularly relevant due to the current state of play with restrictions on travel and the delayed reopening of the borders.

The perfect excuse to ‘holiday at home!’. It’s time to become a tourist in your own backyard.

We are fortunate to be at the foothills of some amazing hidden gems...... time to explore!
